    I worked at John Read bookshop on Newport Street between 1965 and 1970, wonderful memories. Happy days.

    It takes my breath knowing most people on these clips have since passed away. Bolton what a town past and present proud to come from Bolton.

    When Bolton was the best. At least we can still have photographic proof to show the younger generations.

    Some great pictures. It's true , the past , they do things differently there. Like everybody I would love a time machine. I can almost imagine it.

    It was a great town. Growing up and going to the stores with my mom. Those were the days. .

    It was busy because you could go into a variety of shops and buy what you needed. Now (before covid) you try to buy something basic and they either have to order it in or tell you to try the internet. Those were the days and I miss them. Thanks for the photos

    So sad to see. It used to be a great afternoon out with high end jewellers Prestons open for special gifts. Now a depressing unsafe dump.

    Socialism and excessive immigration killed my hometown, Bolton.

      In your head maybe , in reality it was
      - BWFC Moving out of town
      - Middlebrook Retail Park selling clothes
      - The Valley Retail Park
      - Topp Way retail Park
      - Excessive parking charges
      - Closure of the Market Hall
      - Bolton having unusually bigger branches of the national chains than nearby "Rival towns " , leaving vast units empty as they reduced in size or went bankrupt (C&A, BHS, Boots, Mothercare, Beales (Whittaker's), Debenhams, Index and Argos, Our Price, Virgin,HMV,Topshop, Tammy Girl, Hampsons bakers on every corner, now M&S - only Manchester had an original M&S anywhere near the size of Bolton until their reshuffle of the past 10 years. There was not a big chain that Bolton didn't have and as they all flopped they left massive holes .
      - Trinity Street Retail Park , bizarrely built IN the town centre and allowed town centre chains to move there . That I will never understand.
      - The closure of The Water Place which was hugely popular
      - Closure of the only cinema in the town centre (Odeon)
      - Rebuild of the Ashburner St Market and resulting high rents resulting in a loss of traders
      - People using all the above retail parks whilst the retailers still had branches in the town centre.
      Bolton has always had around a quarter of your favourites on the council plus others even when the Labour party had control so they will have had their votes don't you worry. If anything it's that very fact that's caused the death - any progressive forward thinking plans never get passed or a stale mate because there have always
      been 20 tories sat there wanting regression.
      USE IT OR LOSE IT.

      @@muk8804 : You whine like a typical leftie. It's everyone else's fault but the greedy Unions who destroyed the coal mining industry the textile industry, the motor vehicle manufacturers, the ship building companies etc etc.....but thanks for the smile that I enjoyed after reading your stupid claim that BWFC moving from an old derelict stadium to a new modern one somehow contributed to the decline of Bolton. The Socialists and leeches who live in Bolton deserve to live in such a dirty, backward town. Now that all the business owners have gone elsewhere, all Bolton has left are those that want the government to nanny them from cradle to grave.

      Socialism when was that ? As regards immigrants only its a couple of percent (2%) I never even notice South Asians in Bolton, do you mean Eastern European immigrants? Its only 2 percent of the population are born outside the UK, look it up ! Think of those nice Indian takeaways ! The death of Boltons town centre is due to changes in the face of Retail; the crap one way system and more trains that ever to Manchester. Why the new Bus Station was wrong with the old one ? bring back GMT and SELNEC I say.

      Socialism kills everything including people over 100 million in the 20th century, yet still idiots think it’s the magic bullet to help the poor. Work is the magic bullet, work hard in a capitalist democracy and things always get better.

    1:49 That bus looks like those they have in Russia, but is the nearest one a trailer for the one in front or do they have one pole on each?

    • @mikee9765
      @mikee9765 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bus is a Trolleybus, once used on the Leigh route. Electric traction, power supplied by two, parallel overhead wires. They did not have trailers.

    Loved my town in that era. Now hate going in. Ruined by mass intakes of refugees.

    • @pablomater953
      @pablomater953 ปีที่แล้ว

      Despite my name I am English and was born in Bolton. What mass intake of refugees ? where are they all ? do you mean university students ? are you getting confused ? where are these refugees from ?
