My first hand at reviewing a car! What do you guys think? Would you like to see more reviews like this one? Any suggestions for improvement? Thanks and enjoy!
Your review is THE MOST in depth of any that I have ever seen, very unique and no other can compare, especially with your knowledge and your hands-on top to bottom review. There are a few good new car reviewers out there, but it's even fewer who even bother to open the hood if at all... Most of them are just "sales", but you are the only one with the knowledge to back up what you are showing the viewers. 👍👍👏👏👏👌
This is the type of review that people like me would want to see. If you plan on owning a car for 15 to 20 years it would be great to know how hard the car will be to service. Being a guy who likes to do as much of the repairs and maintenance themselves this type of review is very important and would impact my buying decisions. Thanks.
I plan on buying a new Corolla Hatchback in a few months. This review is really awesome! I'm very grateful that you took the time to do it. By far the best Corolla review, and the only one that really matters as far as I'm concerned. I do not care about infotainment systems, or Apple Carplay, or any other toys. All I care about is whether the car is inexpensive to own and maintain.
I really enjoyed this different perspective on a new car review. If there is one thing I learned about the Corolla is that Toyota made almost every accessory electronically controlled: water pump, oil pump, power steering, valve timing, etc.
Graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree and while they did teach me fundamentals this is what I needed to supplement my studies. I worked on cars to pay my way through school, but nothing in the car community comes remotely to this. Thank you so much. I've personally been trying to compare shaft diameters of various vehicles and study engine clearances and chamber sizes to simulate in ANSYS, but I havent found any blueprints. I guess to investigate what would justify engines or transmission types. Maybe you can do something about that?
I too am a mechanical engineer. We don't learn this stuff in school, so I learned by doing this type of stuff on the side. As far as finding blueprints...those are usually company secrets...the easiest way is to actually reverse engineer components and measure them yourself (I have a series of videos on teardowns).
You should keep doing these mechanical reviews since everyone focuses only on features and style instead of mechanics and accessibility for normal people that only want a reliable car they can service.
Holy mother of reviews. This is just what i have been missing all my life - a complete in depth review with the nitty gritty covered. Top job man. Keep it up.

Definitely helpful!!! Consumers often forget that manufacturers can hide parts very deep into the vehicle making repairs cost tons in labor in the long run.
I just bought a used one. This review was really helpful! The main thing I am looking at when buying a car is whether or not it's going to be reliable. The car can be super fun but if it doesn't start in the morning it's useless to me.
Like any other videos you've done, this is another great one. It is so refreshing to have a review like this since not many people can do this, only those with technical expertise such as yourself can! Besides being very educational, it will become a vital source of information for those who are thinking of buying this car, as well as something to look back on in the years to come from historical point of view - beneficial to much wider audiences than you think. Thank you once again for another great video and keep up the good work.
@@speedkar99 You're right, however most come to see your channel are technical minded (as it could be seen from all the comments that has been posted) and those could also advise others who are not that technically minded when want help to buy a Corolla. I am really grateful for videos like this. My disappointment for this engine, out of all plastics, the plastic cam cover. GM started this trend and Toyota kind of followed, which is a shame. I have been watching car videos on TH-cam for some time now. I have never seen an explanation of the mechanicals before. This is excellent. You have a new subscriber!
Toyota sure is making a lot of improvements, unfortunately, in my opinion, along with the improvements also making it harder for the DIYs ... except for going back to the canister style oil filter.
Other than the weird need for an air compressor + Toyota Techstream (which I have both - hint - check ebay for the TSS software), everything else seems pretty DIY friendly. Last year I had to press out my wife's 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid wheel bearing, which was not that simple. This Thanksgiving I'll need to change the timing belt next (severely overdue at 173k miles!)
speedkar99, oh yea, I have a 2016 Highlander 3.5L V6, it will be fun to change the back 3 spark plugs and not looking forward to the day to change its ATF and filter. I watch one of your knock sensors replacement videos on a Lexus... if that day ever comes, I will just junk the HL. LOL
@@OliverKoolO uh, I think you can change or inflate tires and change air filters..., No? 🤔😀 What do you mean by "tune up"? Maybe replacing spark plugs and cleaning the mass air flow sensor? I mean there haven't been any distributor caps, rotors or timing adjustments or valve adjustments for a long long time.
I took my 2002 beater Corolla for an oil change yesterday and I was super surprised to see that there is barely any rust underneath the car. It spent its 17 years outside in snow, rain and sun and there was very tiny amount of rust which could have been cleaned off. My 2009 Nissan murano on the other hand which is half corollas age and also spent its life outside next to Corolla looks horrible underneath. Its falling apart from rust. Toyota has superior quality.

I’ve always wanted a car reviewer like this. Have you ever watched a “BOLTR”? It’s kinda the same concept but for tools and he goes even more in depth on manufacturing techniques and testing.
I really enjoyed this. Definitely want more. Preferably other affordable cars in this segment, sedans and hatches from VW, Honda, etc. talk about common issues they may have like direct injection problems, weak transmissions, etc.
We have three Corollas in the family. A 1998 VE that we have had in the family since 1998, a 2004 S my daughter got to replace her much loved 2000 LE and recently, a 2016 LE.
They sure do, driving this thing around my neighborhood, it was difficult to tell there was a CVT under the hood. However I did feel the engagement of that physical first gear at launch.
Toyota's CVTs are great for normal family car for city driving especially on economy cars like Corolla, not for a Sporty sedan for a college kid like me My family has a 2006 Toyota minivan with a 4 cylinder 2.0 engine and a CVT, it is nice ans smooth to drive in the city and highways but I don't prefer it on twisty roads or hills where you need to control real gears
My mother bought a new Toyota a couple years ago and the cvt didn’t last a year. She kept having to bring it in for service after getting it replaced. Eventually she traded that nightmare in
@@speedkar99 I'd suggest doing a poll, choices being what you currently have available. You made a smart choice going with a Corolla for this one since many people buy those.
Best car review on vehicles, and not like those idiots that talk about nonsense cup-holders, car color, seats fabric, Bluetooth, etc... This guy talk about how things that you must know... THANK YOU!
This is a great review, perhaps most other reviewers only know how to count cup holders. Viewers do not learn anything new about carrs from other reviews
Researchers proved the direct/port injection reduced Pm 2.5 measured fine particulate soot emissions about 10 times what they were when only direct is used. So its 10 times cleaner burning than everyone else's cars out there today
Outstanding!!! As others have said, would love to see this type of review on older cars too, maybe even pointing out common failure items and how hard to repair. Thanks for doing this type of review. Really appreciate it. Subscribed.
Thanks for this detailed review. Working on my own vehicles and the nightmare that the EGR system is my wife's GenIII Prius, it is great to see that Toyota made significant changes to this system to reduce clogging.
@@speedkar99 I just put a question out on the PRIUSchat forum to see how the post-catalytic exhaust gas routing has faired in terms of reducing carbon build-up. Will let you know. Looks like they have included an additional and separate plenum for the cooled exhaust gas in front of the intake manifold on both the Corolla (M20A-FKS) and the Camry (A25A-FKS). It looks like the EGR pipe feeds directly feeds into the intake manifold after the valve on the GenIV Prius, exactly like the GenIII.
@@speedkar99 Also, I was curious. You mentioned that you need Techstream to service the transmission. Could you not do a simple drain and refill without Techstream?
Not at all built for the ease of maintenance or repair... Yep it's just getting worse. But your videos continue to improve! Thanks for this brilliant review! I'd watch your mechanical review over any salesman review any day.
The Mitsubishi Mirage with the 5 speed seems a lil more diy friendly. They also have 100,000 mile warranty and costs way less. Not my 1st choice, but hey, if the Corolla/Civic are getting this complicated, then maybe its time to find a more practical kinda car.
You are doing very different reviews from the main stream where consumers learn about the technical part of the car which no company wants to tell us. Hard to believe they are using so many plastic parts including plastic valve covers!!! Your honest reviews are one of the few sources we have to learn about our cars otherwise the rest are a part of the marketing propaganda or paid promotions. I personally feel you will be successful like Scotty Kilmer one day. My suggestion is to talk a bit more about the technical issues of each car and predict its reliability on basis of its design. Great job anyhow. Keep it up. Good Luck.
This was really cool! Can you put a little more judgment into the review though? Kind of want your opinion on the mechanics of the car. And maybe a summary at the end or a few summaries sprinkled throughout. Like engine, suspension, etc.
Thanks for the nearly forensic analysis. This car is certainly a technological leap forward from earlier Corollas which makes it so unfortunate that they shrunk the interior and lowered the headroom so much on the new hatch . Canada needs and deserves a new Matrix aka the Corolla Touring Sports they sell in Europe.
You definitely know your stuff. Might I kindly suggest possibly a red laser pointer for better clarity...and I just remembered to get a new toothbrush.
Don't know about the rest of the viewers but I'd rather have 5+ minutes extra on the video and talk slower so we could understand the info much better. As I have to go back every now and then to understand what was that. Very useful channel thanks!
I have one of these and its a great little car. Why do people dislike the electronic parking brake? I assume its more difficult to service? Thanks for your fantastic videos! Always a thumbs up!
@@whitelulule well I think it's something like this, toyota doesn't really do a product save for maybe the 4 runner and land cruiser where everything is good on the car, yes toyota does some things good, and some things have issues, even gm does some things good. It's kind of like take your pick
Wow this is an excellent vehicle tech, geek review, I guess, fascinating! These Toyotas are surely fairly standardised for use on different vehicles/platforms like VWs have had. Nice work.
Great vid, will be really helpful for those planning to buy this car or even maybe for non mechanical savvy new owners wanting to do some diy on their car.
This was excellent! Lots of information. But as someone who knows nothing about cars it would be cool to see some recommendations, weak points or recommended maintenance schedule to go along with all of the technical info. Maybe talk about your opinions as well. Thanks for the great video!
Love this review.... aren’t you an engineer? Would be good to put in some tips for potential weak/pain pointer, although would be difficult without original drawings and calcs and just a best guess...
Yes I'm an engineer, though I'd reserve my judgement on new cars just yet. There's a lot that goes into engineering and implementing new components, so not anything that's new can be a weak spot.
Excellent review, thank you, would like to see more. You mentioned about 200,000 km in your review, in your opinion, will the CVT last that long on this car?
CVTs have been around for almost two decades (Toyota is no exception with thier hybrids). The last generation Corolla had a CVT and it's going to be the mainstream. I feel that it could at least last as long as a traditional automatic - but - you gotta change the fluids - which is a chore on this tranny. Time will tell though, the idea of having a physical first gear is new, and I personally didn't like its noticable engagement when driving this car off from a stop.
Toyota s CVT has a lunch gear in first gear which reliefs the strong pressure applied to CVT belt, that design by itself will outlast all other CVTs by a long shout , it will be longest lasting CVT, still not last as long as tranditional auto trans

My family has a 2006 Toyota minivan with a 4 cylinder 2.0 engine and a CVT, it is nice ans smooth to drive in the city and highways but I don't prefer it on twisty roads or hills where you need to control real gears
My mother bought a new Toyota a couple years ago and the cvt didn’t last a year. She kept having to bring it in for service after getting it replaced. Eventually she traded that nightmare in
I really loved how you showed everything behind the covers, please consider doing this kind of reviews for more newer cars
I sure will. Hopefully I'll be able to remove the covers though!
well done , and well prepared, bit of a tech background or you have done allot of research on this car, kudos to you keep them coming
It sure did take a few weeks of reading up to get all the technical info!
I instantly subbed after you said you weren't going to talk about the cupholders and shit. Please do more of these.
Awesome! What car should be next?
@@speedkar99 I'd suggest doing a poll, choices being what you currently have available. You made a smart choice going with a Corolla for this one since many people buy those.
Man you can hit million subs with these type of reviews. I always loved your content.
I wish I could! Maybe one day
Best car review on vehicles, and not like those idiots that talk about nonsense cup-holders, car color, seats fabric, Bluetooth, etc... This guy talk about how things that you must know... THANK YOU!
"Unlike most reviews, ..."
I was expecting you to disassemble the car.
Haha good one! I cannot afford that yet.
@@speedkar99 This's already the most in depth car review i've ever watched.
Me as a no mechanic i understand you very easy and i learn too much from you sir 😊👍🏼
This is a great review, perhaps most other reviewers only know how to count cup holders. Viewers do not learn anything new about carrs from other reviews
Agreed
I hope you can show this car again after four Canadian winters. It looks like a great car for the first owner.
I probably wouldn't have been able to take off the covers after a few years in the winter... everything would have been Rusty and snapped!
Great idea to do car reviews based on the mechanical components.
Please consider doing more.
Maybe the Honda civic?
😊👍
Yep you are not the first to suggest the new Civic for a review, I'll definitely consider it now!
I would love to see more mechanical reviews!!!! I love that Toyota is one of the few automakers investing in direct and port injection (D-4S)
Subscribed.
That would be good.
I probably wouldn't want to deal with breaking plastic fasteners removing the covers though lol
Thanks for this detailed review. Working on my own vehicles and the nightmare that the EGR system is my wife's GenIII Prius, it is great to see that Toyota made significant changes to this system to reduce clogging.
Yeah carbon buildup can be an issue with these
@@speedkar99 I just put a question out on the PRIUSchat forum to see how the post-catalytic exhaust gas routing has faired in terms of reducing carbon build-up.
Could you not do a simple drain and refill without Techstream?
try 2003 mini cooper S for comparison
Not at all built for the ease of maintenance or repair... Yep it's just getting worse.
But your videos continue to improve! Thanks for this brilliant review! I'd watch your mechanical review over any salesman review any day.
I'm glad you appreciate my work!
To me this vehicle didn't seem hard to work on...wait until you get to a Toyota V6
Keep it up. Good Luck.
Agreed, gotta keep it unique. Thanks
This was really cool! Can you put a little more judgment into the review though? Kind of want your opinion on the mechanics of the car. And maybe a summary at the end or a few summaries sprinkled throughout. Like engine, suspension, etc.
Ok I'll try but I didn't want to be too biased.
Mechanically I think the car is easy to work on, though parts may get priceir than it's predecessor.
This is the most popular Uber car you see on the road; it is good to see the review of it.
It makes a good Uber. Fuel efficient and reasonable comfortable
Good video! This little car has a lot of tech! Keep going with these reviews.
It sure does have alot of technology compared the Corolla from say 10 years ago!
Much needed fresh look at car reviews. U got urself a nice niche here 👍
I sure did. I really want to get back at it.... waiting for the lockdown to be eased
Yeah I've read that the room is down compared to the old iM/Auris. But at least it's good to have a proper hatchback to replace the Matrix
@@speedkar99 This is a 7/8 scale Matrix. At 6'3" inches I literally don't fit inside.
A true review without the cup holders 👍
Amazing video. Instant sub. Finally, aeons past, youtube recommends something good.
Thanks for subbing
You definitely know your stuff. Might I kindly suggest possibly a red laser pointer for better clarity...and I just remembered to get a new toothbrush.
A red laser pointer would be hard for the camera to pickup unless this was filmed in the dark.
Toothbrush lives on!
so u finally got ur brother a new car after destroying all his stuff XD
Actually my brother got a new old car at the end of this video...a Supra!
@@speedkar99 THAT SUPRA COST MORE THEN THAT COROLLA
@@speedkar99 make a video about your brother car. Let's disassembly it to see how Supra works!
Don't know about the rest of the viewers but I'd rather have 5+ minutes extra on the video and talk slower so we could understand the info much better. As I have to go back every now and then to understand what was that.
Very useful channel thanks!
Slow me down! Haha
I try to keep things concise
I have one of these and its a great little car. Why do people dislike the electronic parking brake? I assume its more difficult to service? Thanks for your fantastic videos! Always a thumbs up!
Because you can't drift
@@speedkar99 oh ok. I don't need to do any drifting.
Great video I have the 2020 corolla le and this was a very helpful and informative guide. You are one smart cookie
Thanks
Everything is so well put together.
It's very well thought out yes
this question may seem stupid but..
..is it still the legendary toyota build quality?
No, all cars are almost the same now
@@whitelulule well I think it's something like this, toyota doesn't really do a product save for maybe the 4 runner and land cruiser where everything is good on the car, yes toyota does some things good, and some things have issues, even gm does some things good. It's kind of like take your pick
This was so awesome to see!!! No one does this with new cars!!!
Yep! That's probably because manufacturers don't want you to see all this
camshaft driven fuel pump? Awesome technology, same as my KE30 3K engine corolla. complete and thorough mechanical review, subscribe immediately
Yep. Lots of direct injected cars are using that now.
This is exactly what I want out of a car review. Thank you!
Awesome thanks
i was hoping you get a grinder then chop off something to see what's inside
Nooo not a brand new car! Unless if you have one to donate 😉
Truly a review for us who know a bit about cars. You might say more time and cost and difficulty of maintenance and repairs . What might go first..
Thanks for the suggestion and feedback
Wow this is an excellent vehicle tech, geek review, I guess, fascinating! These Toyotas are surely fairly standardised for use on different vehicles/platforms like VWs have had. Nice work.
Yep it's all the same now on the TNGA platform
This is what I’m looking for when I buy the car! Pls do more
Great vid, will be really helpful for those planning to buy this car or even maybe for non mechanical savvy new owners wanting to do some diy on their car.
Agreed! It would probably be more useful 200,000km down the line when they do need work haha
This was excellent! Lots of information. But as someone who knows nothing about cars it would be cool to see some recommendations, weak points or recommended maintenance schedule to go along with all of the technical info. Maybe talk about your opinions as well. Thanks for the great video!
Glad you like it.
Really smart idea for a review!
Keep em coming, Thank you so much!
You are welcome! It's certainly different
Super video. Great job ! Way more info than anything on the web.
Thanks very much.
Brilliant narration combined with perfect filming. That deserves *****.
According to Scotty Kilmer Toyota makes the best cvt's engines
It would be nice if u say something about the sound deadening and sound insulation of the vehicles.
This is awesome! I hope you'll be able to make many more of these to come, a great change of pace from the normal kind of review.
Thank you
