Everyone tells me to get something new, but this Regal has the soft suspension FE2. I can't find a new vehicle that drives this smooth. This car is saving me a small fortune in repairs, car payments, insurance. 😄
The main issue with honda's, especially the CR-V, is that it appears they severely reduced the corrosion resistance around 2010. I'm a mechanic in a dealership specializing in inspection and repairs of used vehicle. Honda's are by _very_ far the most rust prone vehicle brand on the market right now. Often less than 10 years old honda's are scrapped because they are completely rotten and the front subframe barely holds by the 2 front member bolt. It feels as if a 8-9 years old honda is about 20+ years old in term of corrosion. On the exterior painted pannels it usually doesn't look that bad, but underneat you can pass a scredriver through the sheet metal in most places. I would not recommend any honda in the Canadian market at this point in time due to corrosion issues, unless someone religiously use undercoating, and even then missed spots get severe corrosion quickly. I wish I could share pictures of 5-10 years old honda I have checked, it's ridiculous how bad it is.
From my personal experience, surprisingly they are now in the middle or upper-middle of the list of brands corrosion resistance. Obviously I can't really talk for the new models since they haven't started to corrode yet.@@speedkar99
Thanks for good tech review. I used to own 2017 1.5L CRV bought new almost identical to this, only kept 2 years. Oil dilution a big problem on this 1.5L, and would not warm up in winter, and the front Radar easily gets blocked even on light snow days, constantly showing erroneous warning messages. When Radar gets blocked, it shuts off many other features. This is more or less warm climate vehicle, not suited for cold climate, would not buy another.
@@speedkar99 : On the newer models, Honda may have removed the engine temp gage, so customers would not complain about engine not getting warm in winters. I have some 2022 Civics non-turbo 2L in the family, none have the engine temp gage or the oil pressure light. Big negative in my opinion.

Here’s a question for you: With a mechanical oil pump you have a bit of delay before the oil system is pressurized when there is metal on metal wear. With an electronic oil pump do they make it pressurize the system and start the oil flowing before the engine starts? Oh, I see that is an electric transmission oil pump. At least that oil filter is very easy to reach. My 99 crv has it up around behind everything and can only be reached by left arm in one position 😂😂😂 That engine sounds weird! Strange that they got rid of the nice ground clearance.

I have a friend who is selling his 2020 CR-V now coming off 3 year lease. He asked if I wanted to buy it. I already have a 2013 CR-V with less than 100,000 miles and running fine. I told him I’m not interested, even though his car has less than 10,000 miles (!) because he injured himself after he leased his car and hasn’t been able to drive it much. I like the 2.4 liter engine and geared automatic transmission in my car better than his car with 1.5 litter turbocharged engine with CVT transmission. His car is very nice, but I don’t think it will hold up as well long-term. If it had the same engine and trans as my car, I would have considered buying it. Could sell mine for almost $9,000 (per offer from local dealership) and apply that to loan on newer car. But not interested as things stand now.
The seal that has holes and does not seal is to allow the water to exit, just in case the seal was applied correctly. They would then have to issue a recall to drill holes in the seal so water could drain. 😊
Never buy the 1.5 as they are known to have issues. From what I have heard you need to run premium and replace the header bolts to avoid head gasket issues. This 1.5 should be easier to work on given the size of the smaller engine yet everything is way worse. Electronic tensioner seriously? This is going into BMW over engineering so you can pay more. Removing the compressor for the water pump...yeah Honda can keep this crap. I have to more blame our government officials with this stupid CAFE rules. They are ruining our cars. China and India pollute the worse in the world and they are not cutting any emissions, so why should we even bother?

They have destroyed CR-V sales in Europe, which up until they shut the UK factory was a very hot selling car, probably the best seller in its class. No more. The UK models had either a petrol or diesel engine with the diesel being dominant, matched to either the Honda six speed manual or ZF nine speed automatic. Not many potential customers want the CVT transmission or indeed the petrol engine in the UK, although the better fuel consumption of the hybrid model is OK with fuel economy matching or even bettering the old 1.6 twin turbo-diesel. The biggest problem currently is the price. There are better vehicles for the money asked for in Europe. Honda sales generally have bombed here in recent years and my local dealer who couldn’t get them fast enough, mainly both the Civic and CR-V, hardly bothers to keep any stock these days and has been forced to take on another franchise to keep money flowing. They currently sell between five and ten Chinese MG cars for every Honda. They are also dealers for Renault and Dacia and the sales of both those brands also now dwarf their Honda sales. If current Honda sales do not improve, and it has to be product led, then Honda may as well pack their bags just like Mitsubishi and General Motors have done in Europe.
What happened to the simple Honda's of old having a rock solid high revving engine ... Honda gotta go back to their roots and just put the S2000 engine in all their cars.

I don’t think they want it to last 20 years. It would be way more “green” if they would build cars to the max. Everything gets powder coated or at least epoxied. I’m not sold on the new 4cyl. turbo setup. Every maker is doing it. But whatever because nobody can afford new cars unless you make $200k + a year. Keep the old ones on the road!
What happened to Honda? I have no explanation other than their engineers are retiring and they are replacing them with laid off engineers from Chrysler and GM.
The Germans have transition to plastic material everywhere and it looks like Japanese are following the same trend. I mean Honda has finally got the TFSI engine which VW-group had since 2003.
So far Honda's don't have tons of complaints for carbon build up. They have been using it long enough that if it really was a huge problem we'd hear of it like vw.

With a mechanical oil pump you have a bit of delay before the oil system is pressurized when there is metal on metal wear. With an electronic oil pump do they make it pressurize the system and start the oil flowing before the engine starts?
Oh, I see that is an electric transmission oil pump.
At least that oil filter is very easy to reach. My 99 crv has it up around behind everything and can only be reached by left arm in one position 😂😂😂
That engine sounds weird!
Strange that they got rid of the nice ground clearance.
Professor, thats what I'm going to call you... Your analysis of engineering decisions and how thats going to affect ownership and repairs in UNMATCHED.... You could work for Munro... Or start your own consulting company. Please keep this comtent coming. I will watch for any insights imto used cars that i am considering buying
I'm glad you appreciate my opinoks from a technical perspective. Compared to other reviews that count the cupholders 😉
Good choice.
Used car market is too hot right now. Keep what you have.
Honda 5 speed automatic run forever. Turbo + CVT they are cheaply made.
Love the oil cooker design.....with the exhaust right underneath the oil pan.
Yeah....not ideal when you gotta replace an oil pan gasket
That L15 should only belong to Fit.
Agreed. Safety and emissions regulations really having an effect on car design.
Superb review and commentary! Thank you!
You are welcome
So what SUV would you actually buy to keep 15 years and drive 200,000 miles, currently in the market for one. Just looking for economy and longevity here.
Landcruiser
Wawo, there is really a huge qualiity difference for different parts of the world. The ones we get in Jamaica has way more sound deading material in the wheelwells and somehow doesn't look this "Feature Deprived"
Are they the same generation CRV?
@speedkar99 yea but ours comes straight from Japan. Not Canada or America
@omaribawn777
Are you sure yours not come from Thailand?
@@arapaimagold8088 I clarified with a sales rep; it's Japan. Hence why our base CR-V starts at USD $58,150
any recommendations to get my car up to a million psi fuel pressure....I'm looking to decrease my mpg and pollute more
Put more pumps on the fuel rail
I believe my 1988 Lincoln town car has more rust proofing and quality than this new honda which is surprising showing even hondas quality is going down I recommend every everywhere grab all you're old stuff and save it and rebuild it keep it on the road.
Yeah I was surprised at the lack of protection. Better get this coated when you buy it new.
Auto product developers really ought to bring in service technicians to review designs for feedback.
Remember when car batteries were placed the front of the engine bay, so you don't have to lift it over delicate electronic components and wedging yourself under the hood? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Agreed. Non dealership Technicians and DIY should have input.
Thank you for another excellent and no non-sense review. Also, good suggestion on an alternative option of engine/transmission. I rather stay away from Turbo/CVT combo. Honda tends to over-engineer things with little consideration of serviceability and reliability.
Yeah Honda has changed directions in the last few years. Not as simple as they used to be.
Take a look at the Mazda CX-5. More reliable car and easier to work on. Look at Speedkars review on the CX-5 and “Car Care Nut Review” review of the Mazda CX-5
Would love to see the mechanical review of my 2015 Highlander v6 fwd. No DI, turbo, it’s torque converted, one of the last good mechanical vehicles on the market.
Check out my 2020 highlander review. Very similar to your 2015 with the exception of D4S
The new Suzuki Jimny doesn’t have DI, or turbo, or cambelt, or stop start, but does have manual gearbox, push button a/c controls, cd player, on/off a/c compressor, and analogue instruments.
@@davidnorton5887 good to know auto manufacturers aren’t completely lost to the epa. Too bad I’ll never get my wife to drive a jimny lol
Or just go out and by a 24 4Runner. It’s a modern classic. No unibody, No DI, No Turbo, No transverse engine, No rear independent suspension, No CVT, No 6 speed plus gears auto transmission, etc.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q yep good old fashioned $60000 vehicle, I’ll pass, mines paid for.
Great video!

16:35 My Forester from 22 years ago has 2 piston front calipers. What is honda thinking with a single brake caliper piston will stop a 35-3600 lbs vehicle. I swear their bean counters are clearly being catered to.
Yeah well with the electronic brake booster they're definitely applying more force to those pistons to get it to stop.
You da man, man.☺️
You should do a series on all the popular compact cuv’s.
From Chevy Equinox to Volkswagen Tiguan, and everything in between! Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester… Don’t know how you’d do that…
Guess you can rent them individually. IDK. It’d be cool though 👍
Thanks for the review, it irritates the heck out of me that detailed mechanical reviews are virtually non-existent. Cars are often tens of thousands of dollars to invest in and most people only care about the paint, the trim and ride quality -_-
With this vehicle, I’m parking on the grass, at my kids soccer game! 💪
I love your channel!!
1.000.000 psi, thats a lot of pressure 😅😅. The lack of corrosion protection is worrying. Please continue with these technical reviews
Sure thing. Trying to find some more new cars
For tow hitch - there should be the OEM bolt-on kit available. I know there's one for previous gen (I'm still planning to install it, but it requires some metal cut)
thank u for enlightening us
plz explain the ahc hydropneumatic in simplified details and compare it to
citroen and merc abc and why is ahc is reliable and they are not

Your videos are always top notch! I wish I had 1/100th of the knowledge of autos that you have! I think i personally would opt for the Hybrid 2.0 which IMO is better looking and sportier. Just a thought; what if Honda put the 2.0 turbo in here? I know they wouldn't because that would take sales away from the Acura RDX. But anyway just a thought.
These 2 row crossovers are just hatchbacks on stilts. I cherish visability so I am not a fan of that front overhang at all. Every year these cars have more hoodline, less glass, etc. Pretty soon itll all be cameras outside and screens inside. Honda still gives you better visability than other brands. Its why I got a 2015 accord instead of a ford fusion.
Agreed...the point of the higher up seating position is visibility. A bus-like overhang is gonna get swipped out in parking lot manuvers
That's my biggest peeve with newer vehicles, smaller and smaller windows and less visibility
Had a 2005 Euro CRV 2.0K Series Manual 5 Speed, Absolutely Incredibly Reliable Vehicle from when Honda actually cared.
Nice. How many kilometers?
Using a used toothbrush to point out your "mechanical engineering" expert opinion, makes you look so professional. I can tell right away, this video is prepared by mechanical engineer who is an expert in mechanical engineering.
7:30 had me in splits 😄
Rav4 is da GOAT
Naturally Aspirated engine with port injection
Traditional geared Automatic transmission no CVT
I'll take a 1996-2001 first generation CRV with a 2 liter and a 5 speed instead, thank you very much.
Nah bro, the 2nd generation are the best; because K-Series. The K24A1/A2 are better than the B-Series in everyway.
@@applepoop10Agreed. Second gen with a manual. Have to go all the way back to 2006 to find one with a manual.
Great. But the rust...
@@speedkar99 No rust in California!
@@user-3tf67bk46u My dream car. I say that to my adult children and they think I'm crazy. Lol. I'd buy one used if I had space for another car. There are many second gen CRVs still on the road where I am, and I'm in a harsh winter climate. People seem to hang on to them.
Aluminum oil pan is easy to oil leak because Aluminum die casting process will result in the bubble hole. It's not easy to solve this issue
It's easy to crack, whereas steel would just bend.
Hey, Speedkar99, just as a suggestion for a future mechanical review video, how about a Ford Maverick with and / or without the Hybrid engine?
I would love to get my hands on one.
I have reviewed it's platform mates, Bronco Sport and Escape already.
A week point on these new CRV's might be the Power steering rack. I know two people with the new CR-V and two people with this failure.
K24 engine is better than L15B Turbo engine
Agreed.
Looks like Honda has lost their ways.
Emissions and safety regulations really take their toll on car design
What's up with the blender sounding engine's of today? Loose internals or cheaper metals or what...
Think twice about buying one of these in any state that uses salt on the roads! Maybe stick with a lease.
It needs to be undercoated right out of the factory
Hi Dear speedKar99. I like ur videos on Mechanical Review (they're great) can u do one on the 11gen civic turbocharged (L15CA) with vtec and explain how they succeed the high-output with same boost as the 10gen civic turbocharged. Thanks👍
Great informative video!!Seems like the negatives outweigh the positives.
How about and old school 2024 Mazda cx5??
Thanks!
I have a video on the cx5 go check it out.
Damn, they really let themselves go in recent years. Starting to look more hyundai than honda
Very true. It's harder to tell them apart now.
16:18 Cotter pin? that is a split pin, a cotter pin is wedge shaped, with a threaded section and a draw nut, usually used in a bicycle pedal crank.
Thanks for the correction. I always called it a cotter pin. A Google search indicates though that Cotter pin is what it should be though...
Is this best in class?
They keep saying that but I think sales figures will dictate otherwise
Isn't the 2.0 naturally aspirated gasoline engine the legendary one and the one people buy it for? Of course the small volume engine with turbocharging is crap:D That's not news
Yes the 2.0 isn't offered anymore...only with hybrid.
Isn’t there still a rotor screw in the shot?
6:25 I remember the 90s Honda have dip stick just like that. Now only rubber cover 👎 that's why I avoid CVT Honda.
Yeah.
The 1.5 l engine with the oil dilution problem. Stay far away from this crv.
Thanks again for this very informative review. 🍻
You are welcome
Excellent!!!
Actually I do like the CVT on Honda, having own a 14 Accord, 16 Civic and 21 Accord Hybrid.
Are they reliable?
@@speedkar99 never have any major problem with it. The 14 Accord and 16 Civic have over 100k+ because my family and I drive a lot for work. I just do regular trans fluid change every 30k.
New Sub.!😛 You made me get off the couch to get my phone because I am watching this on my tv. You can teach the car care nut a couple of things if you know who he is. Very helpfull videos !
Thanks
I don’t think they want it to last 20 years. It would be way more “green” if they would build cars to the max. Everything gets powder coated or at least epoxied. I’m not sold on the new 4cyl. turbo setup. Every maker is doing it. But whatever because nobody can afford new cars unless you make $200k + a year. Keep the old ones on the road!
What happened to Honda? I have no explanation other than their engineers are retiring and they are replacing them with laid off engineers from Chrysler and GM.
Possibly.
As if a CVT isn't bad enough, Honda made a huge mistake going with turbos. Rav4 all day every day.
Would you take the hybrid ?
@@speedkar99 Only if budget wasn't a factor. Since that is always a factor, probably not. Great video though. 👍
The Germans have transition to plastic material everywhere and it looks like Japanese are following the same trend.
I mean Honda has finally got the TFSI engine which VW-group had since 2003.
Yeah but will Honda's DI be reliable?
So far Honda's don't have tons of complaints for carbon build up. They have been using it long enough that if it really was a huge problem we'd hear of it like vw.
Goodluck to future diyers. Oh, some features they left out for this market.
What features are left out?
Great overview. Tho sadly leaves us with the impression that honda might not be the marvel of reliability it use to be..
Honda should just phase out this power train completely and make the hybrid the standard. It’d probably help their reliability ratings quite a bit.
Agreed. Hybrids will be more reliable
