  • We review the new 2022 VW Taos, an SUV with different names around the world. We are overtaken with options in this class, however with a $22,000 starting price, $28,000 as tested, this cute machine is a value. The question is would buyers choose it over the tough-as-nails Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-30, Honda CRV, Hyundai Tucson?

    As an owner of a 2016 GTI with those same climate control knobs, I thought the same thing when I bought it. But, I can attest after five years of ownership, the knobs are solid. I’ve actually quite grown to like them. They’re precise they have a little click, and they just work. Just as good as the day when I bought the car. Just my two cents. Also, the ability to be in between different modes like floor or top vents is just the best. So much control. But that’s always been a VW thing. 🙂

    I’d guess that a decent set of non-Pirelli/low-bid tires would address the “need” for AWD. Jeez, Mark, you’ve really swallowed the “active lifestyle” marketing BS-no 150hp FWD econobox “needs” AWD to operate adequately in the rain. If you’re keeping it past the end of the lease or warranty, you want the FWD’s Aisin transmission.

    • @Valks-22
      @Valks-22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Somewhat unrelated but I live in a hilly city with snowfall, every winter the uphill roads clog with "Muh car has [insert manufacturer AWD trademark] I paid extra and it can get me anywhere" who can neither drive, nor do they get decent winter tyres. I managed all the unplowed snow uphills perfectly fine with a decent set of winters in my FWD Passat, Insignia, Peugeot 308 and 107, and a Suzuku Swift. While the xdrives, 4motions and quattros were slipping and sliding.
      You absolutely do not need awd/4x4 for 90% of anything most people claim to NEED it.

    • @RoyalFizzbin
      @RoyalFizzbin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      I think he was saying you “need” the AWD in the wet only because THIS PARTICULAR FWD package is so terribly bad. I do not think he was saying he or we need AWD in the rain in general.

    The 4 Motion DSG car is a completely different animal with respect to driving dynamics. You are missing the joy of this car by limiting your experience to the FWD, Eisen 8 speed variant. I found no more lag on start up in the DSG car than in my DSG Audi A4, and my VW GTI. The DSG 2022 car also has launch control and it's very quick off the line. Even just in sport mode, it's as fast or faster off the line than my other DSG cars. You really should update this information with a review of the 2022 DSG car.

      Alltrack owner here.
      The MK7 Golf wagon twins are better. Faster, nicer interior, looks better outside (subjective), nets slightly better fuel economy and fits more stuff inside with the seats down…
      Plus the modify-ability of the 1.8T blows this 1.5T out of the water, and anything that fits on a GTI or R fits on the wagon (turbo included).
      Muchhhh better for the car enthusiast but the average person who just wants something new will probably just buy the Taos :/

    31K for a subcompact CUV with front-wheel drive? No. For 20K after negotiation, the Kia Soul EX seems a better value. And for the low 30's, I'll take the Honda CRV. At least it's got some real cargo space. And no doubt a ton more reliability and probably even resale value than the Taos.

    I test drove this same exact model. FWD SE. I agree that it felt refined in many ways. I disagree that taking off from a stop took 2 seconds. It felt faster off the line than that. It generally felt quite quick and agile.
    I’ve read that it is the 4Motion AWD version with the 7 speed dual clutch transmission that is slow off the line.
    It’s a good vehicle, but honestly, I’m not sure how much sense it makes. Its price is close to that of the larger and more capable Tiguan. I understand that VW wants to move the Tiguan upmarket, but I think the Tiguan is probably the better value. (Some people might find the Taos quicker and more fun to drive, however).

    VW, are you just having an identity crisis or do you have different designers for each vehicle? The Taos and Jetta has the best interior ever and I'm surprised and confused on why the newest vehicle to come out for VW has the previous and not next generation interior.
