Brake Pad Replacement - Subaru Crosstrek - Front and Rear

  • Here I am replacing front and rear brake pads on a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. The rotors are in good condition so there is no need to replace the discs at this time. I am also cleaning up the caliper and retracting the pistons before reassembling everything. This process would be similar for the Subaru Impreza.

just a caution: those springs on the brake pads are wear indicators [squeakers] that are supposed to touch the rotor & squeak/squeal when the pads are worn & ready for replacement
Im not sure about this part, but they are installed to the bottom of the bracket to be touching the rotor when the pads are worn low.
Ive done a few brake jobs & usually the wear indicators come installed on the bottom of the bracket.
So Ive just redone them as they came from the factory.
gee these new crosstreks have a different kind of retainer clips on the front brake pads, So I am watching a few vids as these are a different fit than I have learned to do.
    thank you :)

Nice video- one thing to be careful of is to use impact-grade (black) sockets with an impact gun - the regular type of sockets can shatter when used with an impact drill. Thanks for making this - very complete!

These brakes are a little tricky to get in compared to other cars I've done in the past. Make sure the grooves in the brake mount are cleaned well of any rust or buildup so the new clips can be well seated. Also make sure the clips are installed in the proper orientation and that they are seated as deep as possible. Apply a little of the included brake grease to the clip surface where the pads will contact.

16:31 I just had an idea: drape a rag over the newly installed pads and slides so the grease doesn’t get contaminated whilst wire brushing🤓

Good idea. I could have cleaned the calipers first as well.

Do I need to bleed my brakes after I change the pads?

    • @nothandsomebuthandy
      @nothandsomebuthandy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Not usually. Be careful the first time you use them as they'll take a second to make pressure. If you did top up the fluid as your pads wore you may need to bleed a little off, but just check your reservoir level to be sure.

@@nothandsomebuthandy this is the very first time my brake pads get changed out on my 2019 Crosstrek they still had a little bit of life left in them but I decided to change them anyways. Thanks for your video, it was very helpful.

No. Subaru requires the ABS to be activated to properly bleed the brakes so u likely don’t have the proper equipment anyway.

what is a good after market brand to buy? where from?

Honestly on my daily drivers I just go with whatever ceramic pads my local parts place has in stock and haven't ever seen much of a difference. The ceramic are quieter and give off less brake dust so the wheels stay cleaner. Raybestos and Bosch are two I use quite often but there are many good brands out there.

None. Use genuine Subaru pads n rotors purchased online.

My neighbors are great. We get drunk after I teach them how to do a quality pad/rotor replacement, unlike what you show here. Ur learning tho. Ur on the right track.

Use genuine replacement parts: get a part quote/number from the dealership, then order online
Rotors should always be replaced when pads are replaced
Removing the caliper mount, hit it with a brass brush, especially corrosion where the pad brackets go
Use anti-seize: light coating on the caliper mount where the pad brackets get installed, use on all mounting bolts, thin layer on the wheel axle
Use syl glyde brake grease, not the garbage high temp stuff in the video: use on caliper guide pins, on the back of the brake pads and between each anti-squeak shims.
When re-installing the caliper mount, have the pads already installed
Everything I mention is the 1st step towards making your next pad/rotor replacement easy peasy
