I’m so happy that call led to this friend!!! Sorry to do it to you 😭
nah you were right, this movie is crazy good
As if I needed another reason to love you bro lmaoooo! This was so good 😭
You're doing god's work my friend!
casting bill skarsgård as just a normal guy was the most genius distraction ever!!!
the way this movie did EVERYTHING right
i just replied to you on the wrong account don’t mind me
@@caitlinmariereacts I KNOWWW i wish we got more smart scripts like this instead of endless sequels 🫠
@@caitlinmariereacts HAHAHAHA btw caitlin i really love all your reactions keep it up!! (also i know you from the greyson chance fandom 👀)
It’s good but I never did think he was bad at all because that to me was just way to obvious. I had a feeling it was something else not “that thing” tho 😂
When AJ discovers the creepy basement and the movie cuts to him googling if he can profit from it I laughed my ass off.
This movie is just so goood
I feel so sad at the end. She doesn't even know what a gun is. She's 100% a victim of the real monster in the basement, but she's also too dangerous to let live. As a dad, it really rips at me, I wish I could go back in time and take her away from that monster who raised her.
I think she does know what the gun is. Doesn't she say "bye bye"? Like she knows it's over?
@@randomlibra “baby”
Also it's kinda putting her out of her misery
Exactly. She is human. Not a monster. Humans do monstrous things, which is the point of this movie.
@@tommyross3298nah the point is that men are barbarians.
The one detail that always gets me when rewatching is that Mama killed Keith because she thought he was attacking Tess. She didnt have the mental capacity to understand the situation and all she saw was someone like her.
“someone like her” exactly this. Mama saw tons of women like her being abused by the father and did to Keith what she was too afraid to do to Father. It's not shown in this video but when Mama chases AJ and he ends up in the room with Father, it's the only time you see her back away; it's the only time you see what you thought was the monster being afraid of the actual monster. Excellent storytelling.
@@EvolianTiger Yes! This movie really manages to have so many delicate details that seem like something you can overlook without much harm to the overall story but in the end the details are what makes it great!
The most impressive thing is this movie is how the cinematography shifts along with the perspective of who is the protagonist. The style jumps around so much.
OMG thank you for pointing this out. bc watching this video showed me how well the story is crafted and changed how I initially felt. and NOW I understand why the styles changed so much! THANK YOU oh my brain can rest now.
The “Be My Baby” needle drop over the credits had me SHOOK in the theater
Perfection 😂
The casting is one of the things I ADORE about this movie. There's Bill Skarsgard (Keith) who people know as Pennywise so it subconsciously adds another layer of the distrust that you feel towards him at the beginning. And then there's Justin Long (AJ), who's been in a lot of comedy movies and horror movies where he's the victim so you almost give him the benefit of the doubt. The fact that the casting plays on/subverts the audience's expectations (along with EVERY OTHER MOMENT in this movie) is amazing!
They did this wonderfully for Promising Young Woman
@@lovelessshin3 Yes, that as well! Another fantastic movie!
wait you adore this movie?
BARBARIAN DESERVES EVERY PRAISE NO BEVAUSE EVERY SECOND WAS UNEXPECTED. thank you for upload QUEEN
just watch me fall for every expected trope and total “foreshadowing” moment, it’s embarrassing 😂🙄
@@shesscared gurl im watching rn and its not looking good for u 😭😭😭
No it don't. Horrible movie
this movie genuinely fucked me up. the scene of all the cassettes lined up genuinely made me cry. “wont stop crying”, “suicide”, and “blind” being written on them had me bawling.
Bro hasn’t watched Midsommar, nothing is traumatizing after watching that movie
@@User-moakmidsommar is nothing like this film? And both of them are equally psychologically horrifying but the thought of these scenes with the tapes are sickening
@@User-moak I think a serial rapist who records snuff films is a lot worse than anything in Midsommar, because they are not sadists, the cult believes that what they are doing is the best, but here he knows rape is bad, but he enjoys hurting women and his own kids
Exactly @@cturbo6655
@@User-moak midsommar is nothing like this, since that is completely fictional whereas those types of tapes DO EXIST in the real world
I am probably late but a cool detail of this movie is the title: Barbarian, or a resident of barbary (the street name). The two Barbarians (or villians) in this movie are both the owners of the house, AJ/Justin Long and Frank/old man in basement.
omg i love that
wow
For some reason the biggest shocker to me was the second basement. I lost my mind when the second basement was revealed. I've seen too many horror movies to be shocked or surprised by monsters, crazy people and random other entities. The last thing that really surprised me was in Nope. But good architecture hits it home for me every time 😅
If you've never read it, House of Leaves would be right up your alley.
I absolutely love that the property owner's first reaction is to measure the extra space and start speculating on how much value it adds to the house, totally ignoring how creepy it is. That was both believable and genuinely funny.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks Accurate depiction of how landlords are parasites
The way i was so pleasantly surprised with this movie. I had already made multiple theories in my head in the first 20 minutes only for the movie to take a completely different turn 😭 it's so good.
yes exactly, that’s my favorite thing about this film
Me halfway through the movie, texting my friend: "It's will filmed but kind of predictable"
Ten seconds later: "Lmao never mind, wtf am I watching"
And the "we've just entered an entirely new movie" transition in the middle threw me [and her], like, "what the fvck just happened, and what is happening *right now*??"
The bad vibes you got from Keith were 100% intentionally there, as per the writer/director. There's a book called The Gift of Fear that lists out a number of red flags that often show up in violent men before they act, and Keith exhibited a ton of them. Which is not to say that Keith was actually a threat to Tess in the movie, but that his actions were designed to put Tess, and the audience, on edge
It contradicts that entire book then lol
@@aeganratheesh It isn't meant to actually give a narrative about the accuracy of these indicators-- it's utilizing them simply to engage the audience. And it worked, many were very on edge about this character who truly meant no harm.
@@plush.6004 I guess the same can be said if it was a woman in Keith's place then
@@aeganratheesh I think that you're missing it: It wouldn't have worked as easily if it was a woman. While I don't think the movie is trying to comment on the accuracy of the red flags-- whether they truly indicate whether a person, a man in its primary context, is truly of ill-intention, it IS commenting on gender roles and manipulating them. These red flags were used to put the audience on edge, just as Tessa was in this situation. It's engaging them into her role and perspective.
BUT it wouldn't have worked as easily if Tessa was in Keith's situation. The movie even comments on this-- when Tessa comments about how she would have never let Keith in if the roles were reversed, as women are made to have a level of anxiety and awareness about male strangers in particular. We're warned about weird people in general-- but there's nothing older in the tales women are told and live than that of the strange man. Whereas, men don't walk the earth typically with that same anxiety that women do. Hence why Keith let her in. Why AJ descends into the basement without any fear of his safety. It doesn't click what that basement was used for-- but it immediately does for Tessa, who surely knows of stories at least, where women were held and abused for snuff films.
TLDR: The Gift of Fear reference I think is mostly a tool for the audience. But what you're saying is something I feel is incorrect *and* the opposite of what the movie is saying.
@@plush.6004 I'm just saying the book is probably responsible for a lot of male-female interactions getting sour
The constant subversion of expectation is amazing. Bill is a nice, awkward man. Aj is a complete bastard. The homeless man is kind and helpful. The cop is not here to help. The pitiful old man is a serial killer. The monster is a scared girl who wants to take care of her babies.
Such a great movie.
“She ain’t even the worst thing that’s in there” is such a great line. Imagine a TV show where each episode gets crazier and crazier and you see more and more horror that are in the basement.
"From."
Thank me later...
From what I remember, the second season of American Horror Story was something like this
What I love about Keith's request for her to stay so he doesn't get locked in too is that it is both *completely unreasonable* (let her leave, dammit, you don't have to go see for yourself--that's the whole point of the movie, that men need to see for themselves/act like they belong everywhere they are) but it's got that tiniest *hint* of reasonable-ness to it--Tess is like, well, I did just get stuck and I don't want him stuck, too. It's a great way to get her to both 1) know she should leave, and choose to, even, but 2) also end up staying/going back down. Such an amazing movie.
I mean, if you were staying there, wouldn’t you want to see for yourself if someone told you there was some weird shit going on in the basement?
Most people wouldn’t just take the word of someone they just met.
Sure, it does seem kind of unreasonable to an extent, but it is still 100% a reasonable response to want to check that out to make sure you yourself are actually safe staying there
Lol so funny
@@JD-jz5gu well yes, you would want to see yourself. But the reverse is also true, he shouldn't expect her to stay and accommodate his own curiosity right then because *she doesn't know him*. If they were old friends, this would be different entirely in every direction. He doesn't understand that it's wild to expect her to stay for a stranger when she's afraid and thinks she's in danger.
Just as he might not take the word of someone he just met, she shouldn't have to ignore her own fear "and just calm down" for someone she just met. But it's a very complex situation, which is why it works so well as a means of getting her to go against her better judgment
@@marsalien4 “accommodate his own curiosity” is kind of taking away some context tho. It’s perfectly reasonable for him to check and see if its even safe for him to be staying there.
While I agree with what you say in the rest of your comment, I don’t think either is remotely wrong in their thinking/handling of the situation.
My favorite thing about the movie's wonderfully tight little setup is that Tess rightfully cannot trust Keith, in spite of us eventually learning he was (probably) just fine, because there are men out there like AJ.
at the end of the day, the moral of the story is the real barbarians are the owners of the house on barbary lane (the kidnapping old man and justin long's character), and everyone else are just victims
This movie does an outstanding job at showing how it feels to be a woman lol like making Keith seem really sketchy so you don’t know if you can actually trust him, even adding the detail of her taking the picture of his drivers license is such a nice touch
also when the guy chases her into the house. that to me was peak. because he was just trying to warn her but because society has treated women so horrible for so long
Took me a minute to get on the barbarian love train but i’m here 🫶🏼‼️ I really do love how they connected all three storylines and how they didn’t show us any of the torture scenes but they showed the tapes and the bedroom so we have a idea of what happened but they spared us the trauma of seeing what these poor women went through. I felt so sad for her at the end 😭
Mama did nothing wrong and I stand by that. She just wanted to protect her baby. 🥹 Also I love this movie so much.
no for real, this movie flips every expectation on its head in the best way
@@shesscared Exactly. That’s one the biggest reasons why I loved it. That and it had some unexpected hilarious moments. When Justin Long started measuring the underground tunnels it killed me. 💀
Its more tragic than she did “nothing wrong” she is the monstrous product of the incest r*pe insanity that happened for decades in the tunnels
she was literally the only character i liked 😂💀
fr she was the biggest victim here like 😭
Casting Bill Skarsgård was such a smart move. He’s an handsome man IMHO but his previous roles definitely screws with our preconceptions!
I also went in totally blind. There are definitely some turns you don't see coming! I thought Barbarian was one of the most fun horror movies of last year. Also, I appreciate the almost subliminal David Stern cameo. RIP.
was very surprised by the twists in the movie, thought keith was gonna be some demented kidnapper only for him to actually be a victim. introduced Tess as the first main character and then everything shifted, now we have a different main character who was not a good person and defies how we are usually supposed to see the main character-as someone to root for.
AJ sees the man in the house as evil despite the assault he committed, and it looks like he's at an upward shift with his character qualities, only for him to show his selfishness again at the end. we see the "monster" was actually a victim herself and engages in these almost sentimental moments with tess, making the audience conflicted despite what she's done to others who were innocent.
they wanted to intentionally show a false trail, where the monster woman looks barbaric at first when it was due to the man who committed monstrostities for years . AJ throws tess under the bus at the end, we thought the homeless man was going to hurt tess when he was chasing her, and we thought keith was going to prey on tess originally as well. was it a remark on the trickle effect of barbarian actions, or a remark on women being preyed on by men? all in all thought it was a good movie, love ur reactions!
Caitlin watching movie: NO! Don’t go check out the noises, just ignore it.
Caitlin IRL: *hears weird noises* Let me go check on those real quick.
🤣
Omg your scream at 12:45 ahahahahah!! So Genuine!!! That was satisfying! This is why i watch your reactions lmao! Oh my goodness! And just melting in your seat afterwards, chefs kiss. That was serotonin injected directly in my brain. And that realization dawning on you that Keith WASN'T the bad guy - despite his initial awkward weirdness (which, let's face it, many of us guys have). Really great reaction!!
that is honestly one of my favorite jump scares EVER, idk why it got me so good but i love it 😂 glad you enjoyed the video!
@@shesscared I did enjoy it very much lol, thank YOU for your great reactions!
I loved how it kept pulling your expectations in all directions and even switched genres and tones so many times. Tense thriller, romance, comedy, thriller, horror, action, and then more horror with some action and a few chuckles, and then it just ends so abruptly and sadly.
Justin Long actually vouched to have his character be a jerk the whole way through. I can’t remember exactly but I think the writers wanted him to have a redemption arc towards the end but Justin wanted his character to go out as the jerk he was to show the symbolism of, as you mentioned, that he & the other guy were the true barbarians of this film.
This movie was such a wild ride in the cinema
My favourite part is AJ's reaction to what's in the basement compared to how Tess reacts
Bill Skarsgard was perfectly cast. He has such a natural look that can give off boyish but cool (Atomic Blonde), evil but charismatic (John Wick 4) or suuuuuuuuper creepy and malevolent (IT).
Dude is an icon. So happy you went into this one totally blind! I went in completely blind at the theater and had a GREAT time!
this was definitely the best movie of 2022 for me! it kinda reminds me of psycho in the way that it makes you think it’s gonna go one way, but then something so unexpected happens and you have no idea how it’s gonna go
Bill Skarsgård/Keith is the new Janet Leigh/Marion Crane lmao
I absolutely love this movie! Yes, it toys with the viewer all the way through and I'm here for it! And I was so glad that the movie didn't take itself too seriously, although it explored some dark stuff, really depraved stuff, but how they incorporated absurdity and comedy was brilliant! The tonal shifts completely throw you for a loop - the first cut to the sunny seaside almost gave me a heart attack.
And this is the first video of your that I've seen and I've subscribed immediately! Love your style!!
I saw this movie blind too. I did not expect it to go the direction it did, fantastic horror movie
So good
The mid-movie reveal was one of the best things to experience, and I LOVE showing this movie to people.
Every single movie that's got either Bill or Alexander Skarsgård in it, is an immediate win for me. Their performances are always on point. 😍
God I LOVE this movie!! So glad to see you react to it
so glad to hear it :) hope you enjoy!
@@shesscared I did! :)
Justin Long has had some amazing horror movies under his belt. One of my all time favorites of his is Tusk. He's just so freaking good.
He is a genius
Between Barbarian, Tusk, Drag Me to Hell and the first two Jeepers Creepers movies, Justin Long is basically a scream queen at this point.
13:10 all the way through the next scene had me laughing so hard the whole time!😂😂 I said the same exact thing like "wtf now all of the sudden peaceful beautiful day driving through California vibes" like wtf 🤣
'Of fuck no. That's Pennywise?!' Oh just wait until you see him play Eric Draven in the Crow remake. If they're gonna give him the personality of Eric in the original then you're in for a heartbreaking treat.
I didn’t go in blind, but when I watched it, I was still completely shocked! I love this movie so much.
I remeber how I FUCKING JUMPED out of my seat with that jumpscare at 12:36 holy shit LMAOOO
In a year of some really solid horror films this sits comfortably at the top for me for 2022. That "Be My Baby" credits needle drop was too sweet 👌
The whole movie is really about expectations. Keith is awkward and kinda weird but genuinely harmless. A homeless guy running at you would scare everyone, but he was trying to warn Tess. AJ seemed like an amicable guy but was the person you should trust the least. The 'dad' pretended to be a mechanic for people to let their guard down and let him in their home. Then the monster was just a victim of incest sexual abuse who was closer to a wild animal than a person. And it's all enforced by the way it is shot and edited.
This is a terrific explanation.
When I saw this I’m theaters the entire audience laughed when she dove from the tower, amazing movie
It's funny that you only know Justin Long (AJ) from light-hearted stuff because I'm pretty sure his "breakout" role was in Jeepers Creepers, which is another horror movie. He's always been a pretty solid actor.
I'm assuming what the woman did to him was supposed to be a direct (blatant) nod to Jeepers Creepers.
As someone who watched the trailer and read the summary before watching it, I still feel like I went in blind. They were good at hiding the twists and they were soooo worth it.
ok i just watched this movie... it is so sick and twisted and the plot twists are amazing.. the director is so frikin clever for this .. every second of the movie I had something to say.. i was in awe the whole time, i adore horror movies
the ending had me shook. The storyline is so sad though, heartbreaking and terrifying all at the same time :(
the MOST unpredictable horror movie in recent memory frfr
FOR REAL
Going in completely oblivious to what this is about is the only way to watch it. I saw it in the theater, and had been avoiding it but started seeing that it was a horror movie, and said what the hell, let's do it. I was totally blown away by it. Same with Violent Night, I went in expecting a killer Santa from the poster, but boy was I wrong.
I wonder if we ended up trusting Keith because he died, because personally I was very suspicious of him the whole time and that suspicion only went away when he was no longer a threat to Tess. I also wonder why Mama killed him since her whole thing is that she wants babies to take care of, she only killed AJ after he hurt Tess so I wonder if she noticed something about Keith that would make her take him out like that.
when Keith started shouting at Tess at the basement maybe the Mama misunderstood it as he's attacking Tess, I think she doesn't have that mental capacity to understand these things
omg was i the only one who thought that tess and keith's relationship was cute and almost made the movie a romcom??
so did I! I was really rooting for them at first until I remembered what genre of movie I was watching
*gasp* “That’s Pennywise?! Oh fuck no!” 😂
I watched this completely blind myself a few months ago lol. I had heard my roommate reacting to it in her room a few weeks before yelling & hollering LOL thought nothing of it but girl I was shook
I also just love the play and ramp up of tension in this movie. Some movies just go all in and because of that, you almost get fatigued by how much crazy is happening. The short introduction to Justin Longs character after allows the tension to plateu for a bit. Then you get the ramp up again and that’s more scary than had they just gone straight for jt.
This was so fun to see you watch! This is why going into a movie blind can be incredible!
Going in blind is my favourite kind of reaction, can’t wait to see this :D
Yeah, no worries about this one being predictable. There's something really refreshing about having no idea where a story is going. The Perfection is a Netflix film that has a similarly unexpected structure.
I loved how so many people go blind to watch this movie i was like HONEY, YOU GONNA BIG STORM COMING 😂😂😂
the song at the end being “be my baby” made me scream when i watched it
12:42 🎵”Baby, this is what you came for”🎶
'that's pennywise? oh fuck no.' -phone thuds- iconic behavior
I love how is spooked her to the point of shutting her own door 😂
This movie was a pleasant surprise for me. This is how kinda low budget movies can work. Surprising story twists and some old fashioned gore. Would rate this movie regarding of the production possibilities an a- or b+
Great reaction, you're really good at this, both at the visceral viewing level and analysis. Keep up the great work.
appreciate it, thank you!!
13:30 "...a-aa-aaand, we've just entered a second & entirely new movie."
"Wait ... whaaaa?? I'm so confused... Fvck it, just gonna' roll with it."
Your channel is where I come to watch horror movies again for the first time bc seeing you watch them is like watching them again through fresh eyes and all those first-time feels come right back; it’s awesome. So blessed to have found your channel 😊
I went to watch it at the theaters blind as well. It interested me because I kept getting teaser ads from it since I watch lots of horror, mystery and thriller genre topics on TH-cam. So I was like why not?.. 🤷🏻♂️. I like that the trailer didn’t spoil the whole plot like many others do. This one, even with the trailer, I was genuinely shocked at the plot twists and the soundtrack for this films just puts you on your toes and feel uneasy like most of the movie. One of the few movies that are filmed like this, I did like that the main character didn’t die because she was the only smart and genuine person in this film. It did suck that the homeless man died too though. I agree with the others, the true barbarians were the old man and the selfish, lying rapist. Good movie overall. Thanks for reacting to horror films! I love horror so I’m glad to watch a long and see another’s POV of things.
LOVE this movie, i think my favorite part was the score and how the score worked to build suspense and tension. sitting in the theater looking down into that hallway in the basement waiting for something to emerge from the dark was sooooo effective at scaring me
This was maybe my favorite movie I have watched you react to, your reaction to the shock of everything and all the twists going on was so real so good lol
I was surprised to see this was written and directed by Zach Creggar from The Whitest Kids You Know.
The chills I got as the passage kept getting deeper and deeper
I'm so happy you saw this blind. I saw it blind and thought Skarsgard was the antagonist, and once he wasn't, mind-blowing swerve after swerve and I loved it.
they made a good job to create a creepy and scary atmosphere, so few horror movies actually manage to do that right
I have never been fully into reaction vids, but this is great. The 'this took so many turns in so many ways and I've hated every moment of it" is so on point!
I was sooo happy that i went into this movie the first time as blind as you. I find that is the only way to do it with Horror movies! Such a trip some times
she's scared • You trying to figure out what that noise was in your house frightened me more than this movie did. Glad you're okay and I enjoyed the commentary, I'm going to press that subscription button.
LOL loved your reaction!!! This is a movie that I also watched blind, and sooooooo glad I did, that's by far the best way to watch this movie in my opinion (like even not knowing that Justin Long was in it and being surprised when you see him).
Such a good movie, and your reaction was great. :)
Subscribed. :)
Love this movie. But what I love more is watching people watch it for the first time. Great video!
Girl!! Like that’s so smart! To have a full watch through on your patreon! I follow a few watch through TH-camrs, but none of them ever has done what you are already doing! Smart!
0:53 how is no one talking about how good at singing she is!!!
“That’s pennywise , oh f*ck no”😂😂😂
OMG YOUR HAIR I LOVE IT 😍
Fuckin' Barbarian... Best movie I watched last year. Nothing took me more by surprise, it's perfect.
I didn't really suspect Keith all that much at all until he went down into the basement and asked her to wait. I really think people are reaching when they talk about "all the bad vibes Keith gives off" when he was just being nice the whole time.
Barbarian for me is one of the many highlights of last year. I saw this in theaters when it came out I went into it only seeing the trailer that came out and I loved the hell out of this one. It's a shame that this hasn't been released on Blu-ray or DVD as of yet.
omg when I realised that Keith was a good guy, when he died in the cave thingy I LITERALLY CRIED LOLOL 😂
“Shush 😂”
Love this movie!!! Some of it was filmed about a half an hour away from me in michigan. When she says she is staying in brightmoor that is a real neighborhood in Detroit Michigan. Not the greatest neighborhood either lol. Love your horror reactions.
poor Keith. everyone always suspects him. but hes just a normal friendly guy
This movie went different than I thought it was going to. Love your reactions and I always look forward to seeing your content. ✌
I also watched this movie having no idea what it was and I think that's the best way to watch it lol. I love that they set it up as just a creepy male killer storyline and then from the point mother shows up you spend the rest of the movie having no idea what's about to happen. Then the set up of the mother being the Barbarian when she's actually just a victim and the real monsters are the dad and AJ. Very good social commentary on violence against women and societal perception of gender
I watched this movie blind also and I'm an 80s kid so I believe that 80's movies are scary and nothing new is scary but then I watched that movie recently and to be honest it had me jumping out of my seat
Always amazing seeing a mainstream horror movie starring Richard Brake (Frank). And of course Justin Long is a joy
Wasn’t Richard Brake that one Imperial officer from S2 of The Mandalorian that Mayfield shot dead?
@@skinnysnorlax9356 He also played the night king of game of thrones for few episodes from early seasons

i know right? i'm so pleasantly surprised 💖
I saw this in the theater and hadn't heard anything about it. I just wanted to see a movie and it happened to be playing. Still on of the most unique movie experiences ever. at different times it's weird, suspenseful, tense, scary, creepy, gory and just downright gross. 10/10.
I love this movie sm it was my 2nd fav horror movie of the year and seeing this in a dark theater the experience was great💀
Once I read. Acomment in a video that said that the sucking sound when Tess wakes up is bc the mother was breastfeeding Keith and why he was having nightmares, still makes me unwell🙃
*Justin Long appears* “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE???” Literally me watching this movie
