Since 1979 I've carried just about every handgun you can name, as an LEO or civilian. I ALWAYS end up coming back to a 1911.

My Springfield(s) 1911`s are impeccably reliable, reasonably concealable, and exceptionally "shootable" ...yep, I carry a 1911 to the grocery store, and the gas station, and the mall, and on a Sunday drive.

I agree with almost everything you said except that i carry the lightweight commander in .45 with the 8 round Wilson Combat magazine. I have carried this weapon "on the job" for 30 plus years. Never had an issue. I shoot every weekend. I do not consider myself an expert but i am very comfortable with this weapon. I do love my lightweight commander.

I actually made it thru 3.5 minutes without wanting to say something.
I've been carrying a 1911 more than anything else in the 35+ years that I've been carrying a pistol. My current carry gun is a Colt 1911 Officer model Series 80 in SS with a Barsto barrel & bushing. At most, I might have paid in the $600-$700 range. After more than 10,000 rounds, I've had ONE failure and that was a weak magazine spring.
I agree that the 9mm is a perfectly fine round but there's nothing wrong with the 38 Super. Less recoil, good ballistics & very accurate in a steel pistol.
I like the 5" or even a full size with some kind of jacket but warm weather fits a 3.5" perfectly and I don't need to hit a steel plate at 35 yards (a 3" group at 25 yards with my Colt is fine) since most defensive shooting is going to be at less than 10 yards without even using sights.
The main things that I can agree on are....practice, invest in quality mags & ammo! Shoot as much as financially possible!

    • @goldenbanjo197
      @goldenbanjo197 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Why do you carry a series 80? You just like those 4 extra parts that don’t belong there so they can get gummed up and cause a failure?

I must admit that I am 76 years old and I mention this because my experience with hand guns was first with a S&W Revolver and it was my Duty Weapon for many years before I was able to Carry a G19 as my duty weapon. Having said this, back in the day, my first EDC Carry Gun was the Colt 1911 A1 all steel Gun! Yes, very heavy and I soon changed to the Colt Light Weight Officer Model for everyday carry. I just loved my single stack 1911's and at this time they were very popular Guns to carry! Things Change and I tried the Glock Platform and then I discovered I found them to be the perfect Gun for my EDC needs and the rest is History! My EDC is my G43 and I just purchased a G48 which has been a Great shooter!

I carried the Colt Officers for years. Shot a fellow Recon Marines Kimber Ultra Carry at the range about 10 years ago. Had to have it. I have been carrying one ever since. I hear all the time that they are not reliable. But, every single malfunction I have seen has been from a limp wrist. There are heavy springs in that short slide, and they need a tight wrist to push against to get full slide action.

I am not by no means a weapon expert, but I have a good amount of guns and long rifles, ar,ak, and my newest 30/30 lever action. I have a private range that I shoot at ever weekend. I’ve owned 1911’s for over 35 years, having transitioned from Colt and S&W revolvers. I’ve had inexpensive 1911’s and higher end. I’ve been carrying a Colt Defender since 1996, when I purchased it new. I couldn’t tell you how many rounds I’ve put through it. Shortly after I got it, the gun shop owner I bought it from asked me if I had any jam ups, I hadn’t. I said if I had a few minutes he would polish the feed ramp which he did. He said he had gotten a flyer about feeding troubles. To this day, knock on wood, it’s been trouble free. I sold my Kimber Custom Shop, a Springfield long slide, Dan Wesson, and ParaOrdinace P12 LDA, because they either jammed or had a something I didn’t like. I have a Colt Commander that’s also been good to me. But daily I will continue to rely on my Defender.

Carried a 1911 .45 acp concealed for years. Always felt safe and confident. To me, the simplest, most basic, least fancified pistol is the best. I favor the original GI model, perhaps with a throating for reliability. Now I carry the Springfield Armory Mil Spec, and that thing is spectacular. It has a few minor improvements- throating, beveled mag well, relieved ejection port, hi-viz sights, but those are not superfluous. That thing shoots, has never malfunctioned, and is extremely tight and precise. Very very accurate. Thanks.

I enjoyed your video. After about 45 years of screwing around with 1911s (the good, the bad, and the ugly) I agree with most of what you said. I particularly think you have set a reasonable reliability standard for testing (200 rounds training ammo, 50 rounds carry ammo) that anyone considering the 1911 for carry should be able to afford.
My LW Commander I use now is one of the new 2016 Colts, and I find it to be a fine pistol. The new dual recoil spring really works and when I shoot it side by side with my all-steel Commander it feels the same.
I got mine in .45 ACP because I'm an old fart who lived back in the day when the 9mm didn't work, so psychologically I just feel better with those big old fat slugs. I know it's probably silly, but that's just me. I also had a ton of Wilson magazines in .45 and none in 9mm, lol. But now that I'm getting old and turning into a bigger wuss with each passing day, my next 1911 will probably be a 9mm. I'm thinking of a Springfield Range Officer Champion to experiment with.
In short, I can't really disagree with anything you said, except that I've seen more than my share of problems with SIG 1911s, but that was right after they started making them, so that might be unfair. I'm going to have to look into Dan Wessons.
    Thanks for a good video.
P.S. I still back up my 1911 with a J-frame revolver, which fortunately I shoot very well. That ability with a snub is no doubt the product of a misspent youth :)

Agree totally. I would be carrying a LW 9mm Commander if Colt had been making them three years ago...so I'm carrying a LW Commander in 38 Super. It's had about 2000 rounds through it and I don't recall any failures at all, but I don't keep written records like Tam does. Hits all three objectives easily for me and 124 gr HPs hit an honest 1340 fps. Handy for the odd coyote when bird hunting.

Great video. I have been recently testing the Kimber Micro 9mm. I needed a small pocket easy carry gun. I live in Arizona and pretty much all year long wear shorts and a t shirt. Thanks.

That's not the most common trait in TH-cam gun videos. You are also confident enough to go against the prevailing winds on the caliber wars without getting bogged down in them. Nice work. Caliber arguments are becoming silly and obsolete with the advancements in bullet design and ballistics; frankly it just narrows down to the quality of the ammunition used.
That being said, the old thought of 9mm being lesser then 45 was true FOR THE TIME when 9mm (as for most bullets) were not further developed, it was left upon which had more powder loaded in them so logically the 45acp held that advantage. But now thanks to science and engineering, the 9mm can hold it's own, yes the 45 is a bigger slug of a round but 9mm isn't a lightweight either.
Also consider human beings are pretty resilient, especially when hopped up on drugs or adrenaline, I've heard stories from guys taking shotgun blasts and still moving. Now they of course died but not without some fight still left in them.
Case and point, being over reliant and putting your gamble on the bullet is a trivial and somewhat dangerous game to play.

Agree with pretty much everything here. I’ve been carrying a Springfield Range Officer Elite compact in 45 for a little while now and it’s great. 4in barrel, aluminum frame, ramped bull barrel, and an awesome trigger. Only thing I changed from the point of getting the gun out of the box was switching to some Wilson Combat mags.
Seems like every 1911 I’ve ever owned has only had issues while firing from the magazines that came with the gun, never had any feeding issues after swapping to the Wilsons.
I’ll never understand how 20+ manufactures manage to make magazines that have issues when there’s obviously a design that just works *shrug*

    "I wouldn't recommend a 1911 for conceal carry"
My 10mm 1911 A2 fits just fine under the coat with a low profile shoulder holster.
There are IWB holsters that can make a full size completely disappear. However, if you want the most versatile CCW 1911, I would go with a cbob and possibly a scandium or 7075 aluminum frame.
If your 1911 doesn't function properly it's because you bought a cheap one that needs an hour of polishing and/or a slight adjustment to the extractor.
These days they cost anywhere from 500 to 3000 depending on which one you want.
Guaranteed a properly tuned 1911 made entirely from 4140 steel is going to be more accurate, reliable, and will last longer than any polymer sidearm you get your hands on.

Excellent video. Thank you for posting it. I love the m1911a1 in as close to the GI issue as possible. Mine is a Springfield Armory GI, which is a replica of what we were issued in the Service, right down to the lanyard ring. To me, THAT'S a 1911. I even replaced the good-looking wooden stocks with plastic grips, to make it more historically accurate. And, I CAN carry it. It meets all the criteria you cited. Right now, I'm wearing it, appendix position, with my shirt tucked in, but not tucked into the holster, bloused over the grip (my usual carry method), which I find makes for a quicker draw, and the gun is invisible. I had bought a Smith and Wesson M&P 45 compact for carry, and while I can't really fault the gun, I just don't love it. It's kind of like marrying for money instead of for love. The M&P Shield 9mm is much better, in my opinion. But what I REALLY love for carry IS my J Frame, Smith and Wesson 442 airweight snubnose revolver. There's something about the snubbie and the 1911 that is almost magical. Mystical? I don't really know how to describe it.
The snubnose IS harder to shoot accurately, but that gives me an excuse to go to the range. Two speed strips in my pocket, plus 5 in the cylinder, and I'm carrying 15 rounds more than most people are carrying.

My personal favourite carry pistol was the lightweight commander in 45acp, with Wilson 8 round magazines. In competitive shooting however I scored much better with a full size steel framed Government model, the extra weight improved recovery time from recoil, and the longer sight radius was certainly an advantage on targets at longer distances. Also I had more faith in the 45acp cartridge than 9mm loads at that time, for both effectiveness and reliability. I find your current reasoning well thought out, and correct in conclusion. Because of improvements in today's 9mm loads, the better choices of pistols available in that calibre, and the extra round capacity. When carrying every day the saving in weight of the lightweight commander over the Government model is appreciably more comforting.

I have J frames and a Glock 43 and a Walther 9 and a little Kimber .380 but the gun I absolutely shoot the best is my 9mm Ruger 1911 commander-size that was introduced just this year. Alloy frame, stainless slide, Series 70 so no silly firing pin block to mess with the trigger pull. It is no more difficult to conceal than the Glock or the Walther, and when I draw it and put it into my hand I know I can hit whatever I need to hit. 11 rounds with another 10 in my spare mag (thanks Chip McCormick) should be enough to get it done. Look, the FBI went down from .40 to 9mm, so with the right ammo I definitely know I'm as good to go as I can be. Plus the 1911 is just too cool.

What holster and type would u recommend!(new to concealed carry) hunted and shot firearms my whole life! Figured it’s time to legally carry! God Bless !🇺🇸❤️🙏

I own the Springfield Range Officer Compact in 45ACP. You made very good points in the video and I have to agree with them. However, I like this little Springfield even though it goes against the grain of some of your comments in that it is not a traditional 1911 design. So far it has been reliable with about 200 rounds of mostly ball and some hollow points so I am happy with it regarding reliability. I have smaller hands so the office size grip presents me with no problems in getting and maintaining a good two hand grip plus it makes the firearm easier to conceal. I have been interested in your latest test with the 357 sig 1911 because I love the cartridge matched up the 1911 style pistol. Thank you for the videos as they are always enjoyable and educational.

Now I will be looking for a light weight Commander or Wiley Clapp Commander in 9mm. Never knew the Commander was originally designed for 9mm. Thought it was 38 Super. But 9mm makes sense for a light weight Commander. Thanks for sharing.

I bought a para ordnance tac-4 20 years ago. I carried it every day for at least 10 years. I still prefer that to any other gun even now. That’s a .45 ACP with a double stack magazine. It’s a 4 1/4 inch barrel and a 13 round magazine. I know para doesn’t make that gun anymore but they do make s similar version the p-13 LDA. I really do love that gun. Just bought a new alien gear cloak tuck holster. The new holster makes it even better.

I carry a Springer RO Elite 9mm commander. Over 1k rounds, two malfunctions, both not issues from the gun. Confident to protect life with it, its a gem to shoot. Know the platform, learn it well and the 1911 is a fine gun for carry protection, once you get the relaibily out of the way, the ergonomics, and quality of the trigger makes it a even more formidable weapon for daily carry.

Terminal ballistics and wound cavities in gel blocks may not look very different between different handgun cartridges however the “stopping power” conundrum does have some truth to it. The foot pounds of energy generated with good carry ammo that doesn’t over penetrate in .45 caliber is far more impactful then 9mm. When looking at the numbers you will see that .45 produces nearly three times the foot pounds of energy then a 9mm. You simply can not say 9mm and .45 are equal.

Couldn't agree with you more. I see no problem at all with the 9mm , it has a light felt recoil and it is a lot easier to get off a follow up shot if needed. As a former military man, I have to say the Commander size is really an ideal size for carry if you insist on a 1911. I agree that the manufacturers you named are very reputable and a good selection , but there re several others that will fit into the list as well.

A thing I’d like people to say about 1911s though is that they are just mechanical pieces. They can be tuned very easily with simple tools. Yes if you’ve got the money get a pro to do it if there is an issue. But you can also do it yourself. It’s not hard. People do it all the time. It is just care, time, and making sure you understand what you are doing. A rock island 1911 can become an excellent weapon with some polishing and a complete spring kit from Wilson combat. That’s a 550 dollar total give or take some.
You can buy any part for a 1911 in any material oversized so that you can file and polish it down to the custom fit that you get with a les Baer or whatever. If something is messed up with the frame rails or slide rails or feed ramp in a negative manner as in not enough material (so you can’t just smooth it into reliability) then send it the heck back to the maker.
And guess what you’re doing the whole time: learning, training, and having fun with YOUR gun that you defend your life and the life of others with.

  • @blueduster74
    @blueduster74 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’ve carried my 70 Series Commander for 25 years. It was gone through originally by an old friend/armorer stationed at Camp Pendleton. Since then I’ve learned enough to maintain it. In 25 years I have a $1500 into it in that time: Novak sights, lightly smoothed edges, Bar-Stow barrel and Cerakote in matte dark grey.
As to ballistics you are incorrect. I was privy to the ballistics test SOCOM did in the early 90s that lead to the development of the USP .45. Get the knock down power debate out of the discussion. If that’s your argument you are 100% correct. Stopping power is actually based on the ability to rapidly cause shock inducing trauma. Shock is what stops an assailant, not simple impact. Even on HP vs HP .45 vs 9mm always cause very different wounds. 9mm HP are alway deeper and narrower. .45 HP aren’t as deep but are wider, affecting more organs. The physics of the shock wave are the reason. Add to that the ability of a quality 230 gr HP to punch through walls and similar barriers and still be more affective, it’s the hands down choice to me. Where it gets muddy is the calibers in between. I prefer to stay out of THAT mud and use the tried and true.

I like a single stack so as long as your belt and holster are up to the job any 1911 that conceals well is good enough to me. Weight isn't that big of an issue depending on what your current activity is. I was doing electrical work with a glock19 IWB and a tool pouch over it, no problems.

Thinking about a Ruger SR1911. The newer model with the titanium feed ramp. What I want out of a handgun is a good look, comfortable grip, the possibility based on general prestige to be an inheritance piece, and the ability to both be conceal carried and used for woods defense from animals. I also don't want it to be TOO awfully expensive to shoot, as I have that problem with my current only gun right now, a 12ga Mossberg 500. ((And that's just ammo since the range makes you shoot buck or slugs, and that shits $25 a box for the cheap stuff. The defense ammo I bought was $19 for a box of 10. Also, since range fees are costly, I don't get to shoot often, but I digress.))

opening statement "99% of the public should not carry a 1911" Wow, kinda hard to believe. Everybody I know including people I come across at chance with people they know all have 1911s and carry them. I'd have to say 95% of the people I meet if at a gun range or a car show have and carry a 1911. Seems that comment is a little off since you just don't seem to like a 1911. Hell man I don't like Mustangs so you're not going to catch me making a video on the best one to drive. Now do I have a Glock??,,,Yes Glock 19. I also carry Berettas, S&W 686 Plus 3"barrel and one of 5 different 1911 choices. Very seldom carry the Glock and almost always carry a 1911. I have them in 9mm and 45 but I find that most of the Mellinnials today don't carry a 1911 because they are just afraid of it. To be honest it's one of the safest guns to carry. Like anything else you have to train with it and the comfort level just appears. It is the most pointable and easiest platform to shoot. I agree the Plastic Generation has taken over but when it comes down to the bones of it I'm gonna carry good ole metal on my hip and you're gonna get hit with a round the size of my thumb!!!! Have a nice Day

    • @blueduster74

John Delvisco agree 100%. The only argument for a polymer gun is weight and perhaps cost. Weight makes no difference to a guy built like me but may on a smaller person maybe? Of capacity is really something you want there are very good double stack 1911s. I put 300 rds through a Remington R1 double last month and own an original Para conversion.
But realistically I’m not John Wick and I’ve been out of combat and protection duty for 20 years. If 8+1 and two spares isn’t enough for me I’m in over my head to begin with. For concealed carry. I’m not an operator and the chances of my needing my AR or 45+ rounds is remote.

Both in 45acp and with proper spring replacement at around 3.000 rounds or so each has been 100%reliable. It should be mentioned I also use these pistols for club level steel challenge competitions. People often as if the cobra carry is worth 3x the kimber price. That is for each person to decide for themselves. My kimber has never failed but that said I believe the cobra carry is definetly worth the price of entry.

Hey Caleb...great vid's! I bought a SA RO compact 9mm a few months ago. Installed a WC extended slide release and tactical thumb safety. I also replaced the factory trigger with a WC anodized black one. I also sent the barrel to H&M metal processing in Akron OH. and had coat it with black nitride. I just like the all black look. Also installed a shock buffer. Now that you know what's been done to it, here is the issue I'm having. Took it to the range today for the first time with 100 rounds of Aguila FMJ 124 gr. and 200 rounds of reloads. loaded the factory mags racked the slide and it wouldn't load into the chamber, it just hit the ramp and jammed. Same with the reloads. I also brought my G 32 with a full 9mm conversion and it ate all the ammo up. What are your thought as to what the problem could be?

That's funny your Sig doesn't feed Winchester White Box well b/c my Sig Emperor Scorpion eats its just fine. Secondly I notice you didn't mention Kimber and I love their Eclipse model. I am considering buying one. What are your thoughts on Kimbers?

After testing the 9mm Rock Island Armory 1911 would you change your opinion of expand upon it? Or would you stick to this decision now. (Not sure if you tested the ria before or after this video does not give me posted date for some reason)
