In 2016 Porsche upgraded the infotainment systems in their vehicles with a new PCM unit, aka PCM 4. From 2012 and Up to MY 2016 PCM 3.1 featured in vehicles, although well received at the outset, it was beginning to show its age. PCM 4 provided an improved user experience with a higher resolution screen and capacitive touchscreen just like the one on your smartphone, and these changes provided an excellent basis for smartphone integration via Apple Carplay.
Up until now it wasn't entirely clear whether the PCM 4 units could be retrofitted, this video explores whether owners can ditch the infamous pcm 3, forget all about joyeauto et al and retrofit the PCM4. Watch this video to find out if it is possible, what has to be done and what is required to add pcm 4 into your Porsche!
Putting the 981 to the side, we borrow a 958.2 Cayenne to use as a test mule to establish if it can be done. At the end of the day the PCM 4 is just a VW MIB2 unit, what could possibly go wrong???

Please note that if you have BOSE or Burmeister fitted, PCM 4 is not compatible out of the box and you will need to commit to swapping your amplifier if you want to perform this retrofit.

Bought the joyauto kit for 981 but haven’t dug in yet so this teaser got me thinking should wait for pcm 4.0 video and do that instead.
Another level of difficulty but it's possible as you can see.

Nice one Stuart, yes part 2 will cover the 981 and teething issues, I've had a lot of minor niggles to iron out on the Cayenne.

This is tremendous, great job. My 981 came with a CDR31, so currently running a Pioneer Mechless unit with Carplay and higher res, etc. I do miss the volume knob and OEM integration. Would love to do the same as you've just done, can't wait to see the part 2!

Incredible work, if someone offered this as a package imagine the business they would get from PCM 3.1 owners! I have the Isudar in my 958.2 turbo S and it’s ok, sometimes has random connection issues.
The supply of pcm4s will always be limited they don't grow on trees

Hi : great video. Do you suggest to replace pcm 3.1 by pcm 4.0? Or to move forward with the aftermarket solutions with CarPlay (such as isudar or Joyce auto). Second question: will your solution work in a 2014 panamera with pcm 3.1 (I don't know whether the dimension around the vents are similar to the cayenne in the video)
Hi, thank you. In my opinion Pcm 4 is significantly better than any of the Pcm 3 add on solutions but if you have bose or burmeister then it's a far easier to modify pcm3.
I can't say for sure but I don't see why not. Dimensions wise they should both fit, the issue in the cayenne was that the vents sit over the top of the screen and are a slightly different shape. In the panamera they look to sit to the side so looks like it should be ok, the pcm 4 is slightly longer.

Exciting work you've done here. I think I want to take this on in my newly acquired 2015 Cayenne S. You mentioned wanting to have your own store where you could supply conversion harness looms or even radios pre-coded to our VIN, do you have an idea of when you'd like to have these options be available? I can help you out, the problem with cars with Bose is that the pcm 4 is not compatible, I think the only option is to install an aftermarket amplifier or to buy an expensive adapter. Hi Daryl, very brave to attempt this with the very different connections. I didnt get Joyauto on my 981 as it looked risky and I was worried about delivery from China but instead just upgraded the HDD to an SSD using an Ableconn IIDE-MSAT mSATA SSD to 2.5-Inch IDE Adapter Converter with Aluminum Frame Bracket - Latch and Retain mSATA SSD as 9.5mm 2.5 IDE SSD Drive and Transcend mSata drive after using CloneZilla on the OEM HDD after upgrading maps in my 2012 981 to 2021 to get newer technology, most people I guess would like to know a few things so I will start the ball rolling.
How much does an OEM PCM 4 unit cost ?
If enough people commited to a bulk purchase from the original manufacturer and bypass Porsche, how much could it drop to ?
You mentioned about being unable to update the software, I have a Lenovo Clone PIWIS3 with a non porsche VSI interface, does it need an OEM Porsche Interface ?
Where can you get the special program to help integrate a PCM 4 into a car set up for PCM 3.1 please as I had trouble locating that ?
I have BOSE so do you think I just need to move the optical connections from the OEM harness to the aftermarket harness for full compatibility ?
I think its not going to be cheap to do but if it was less than £1500 to £2000 it would work !

Daz, great video! A question as to why you say the the PCM4 swap is not compatible with BOSE? Why so?
I understand Bose uses MOST optical output rather than the line output used by SSP amp, but my understanding is the PCM4 can be coded to output in either LINE or MOST (but not both simultaneously) Would coding the PCM4 to MOST output solve the problem, or is the issue more fundamental? Iirc, 981 have MOST25, and 718 use newer rarer MOST150, So I guess if you wanted to use a PCM4 in a 981 with Bose, you would need to get MOST150 output activated and source a MOST150 Bose Amp to match?
Also, I read The PCM4 does not display map data in cluster of 981, as the multimedia board in the 981 cluster is different than the one in the 718 with PCM4 (981 cluster needs more flash & RAM & and programmed today PCM4 specs)
Thanks, without going into detail the old amp won't work with Pcm4 unless there is an adapter out there but I'm yet to find one at least at a reasonable cost. Of course you can code it for MOST output but the problem remains it's set up for the later most150 amp.
There are some solutions to this problem but you have to commit to ditching your existing amp either for an aftermarket solution or later unit but it's not plug and play.
You are correct regarding the screen. Your desire to use the OEM nav after acquiring Google maps or Waze will be extremely limited if you want to arrive on time and the carplay/AA maps don't show in the cluster anyway.

Awesome video! I just picked up a 2016 Cayenne diesel and want to do this mod. I see that it had android auto. Did the used PCM you bought had that enabled from the factory or did you code in that access? I'm on the Apple side of the fence and would like to do both the 4.0 upgrade while adding Apple car play to the features. Thanks
Hi thanks, no I enabled those features after installation.
@@TDS981 I was on rennlist and saw there isn't a good way around Bose yet. I'll have to wait for a solution or do research on how to bypass the amp issue with buying a aftermarket amp.

Thanks Mike, yes the plan would be the full kit minus the cluster flash or you could send a unit to me and it can be returned with all the coding done to suit your car. The issue is pcm4s don't grow on trees

What is the reason for not wanting to offer the cluster flash? I would assume aslong as you don't alter mileage then it would be ok to do?
It is fine to do you are only flashing the bit to the right with the data in the screen the issue is I don't have the tool to do it, the plan would be that we have contacts that can do it for you for a fixed fee, at your own risk obviously.

@@dansquires7385 they can buy won't be experienced and it's not straight forward. I've learned a lot through trial and error and many hours working things out. You can't auto code a pcm on car it wasn't designed for

@@TDS981 uh oh - i do have bose.. let me guess, their amps are impossible to get straight with the updated PCM4..
@@TyBurger1 sadly not compatible, but if you can source a Pcm4 and a Bose amp together from the same vehicle it should mate up ok. Otherwise you need to ditch the Bose amp and go aftermarket.
@@TDS981 Are there good options to install aftermarket cleanly and sound >= to bose? I suppose the only other issue ditching the bose amp is that you'll have perpetual DTC's due to the missing components right? Something about having codes hanging around that isn't super appealing.
@@TyBurger1 I'm not sure which amp to recommend for pcm4, would be best to discuss with a local audio specialist. There shouldn't be any associated codes lingering because the Pcm4 can be coded to suit the set up you chose.

Do you have a backup camera? If yes oem or after market? Does your previous calls show in cluster?
I don't use a back up cam, but it can be added. Yes my cluster in both the 958 and 981 shows all call info, last dialled etc

looks pretty well made and it has its risks ofcourse i had installed a GTA car kit Apple carplay in a 13 caynne and it has been working great for the past year and some change but it would be nice to have a newer PCM in it

I had the PCM 4.0 in the GT3 so going back to the 3.1 in the 981 is a bit frustrating really, especially once I’d put Apple CarPlay into it and realised the touch screen doesn’t really work well enough to support it.
So if I install the 4.0 as you have, would that include CarPlay as it did in the GT3? And I also put the 9XX Apple CarPlay kit in for reversing and front cameras. How could I enable these with the PCM 4.0?

Have seen some Chinese aftermarket succeed upgrading pcm 3.1 to 4.0 and make it as a mature product/service. Wondering when US can have this kind of product/service.

Great content. I have a 987 Gen 2 and the Pcm 3.0 does not Turn on i have checked all the fuses with no luck. can a Pcm 3 be fixed and If so at what cost. Or whould it be cheaper to purchase a 3.1 Plus would A Pcm 3.1 be compatible in a 987.2.
Sorry to hear that, unfortunately I don't know if PCM 3.1.fits or functions in the 987. There is only one way to find out!
There are people that repair pcm units, use Google to find one local to you.
If you have a 987, Porsche makes a Porsche Classic replacement with CarPlay now

Have you found a way to take the parking brake off from service mode, i see you have the same as me, but i tried with the scanner and no luck.
I don't have a parking brake error, when scanning various items flash up.
But yes I know how to get the parking brake out of service mode they usually require calibration but you need to do it in the right order.
did the MIB solution solve the Android Auto icon being messed up, doing it some time back on my 718 I didn't get the nice version you showed?
Yes you need the latest version of the tool and it's in the menu. 👍

Hi is there any update on this since the video was made?! I have a 2018 Porsche Macan S and want to do this. I just tried installing unavi version and it did not work…my display now has 50% of it with lcd a light gray color when I put it back to stock..

@@TDS981 You don't have XM or Sirius over there do you? I dumped the joyeAudio and went with Idodar but I didn't do an aftermarket head unit because I listen to satellite radio almost exclusively.
We have DAB which is HD radio. That works with pcm4 and I managed to hook it up to the OEM antenna.
@@TDS981 I'm shopping for a radio. I had to build a couple of piggyback harnesses and reprogram my 2019 Z06 to add a few missing options when new. (NAV, PDR, Subwoofer, AMP, Heated and vented comp seats, etc.)
This is along the same vein and probably easier! I have a PIWIS II also, so I'm good to go.
If you want to run with this as a service I'm near Detroit. I'm more than capable of doing this mod.

Directions do, but not the map, Porsche maps are seldom used when you have Waze / Google anyway.
