From 1987 onwards (maybe excluding Restless Heart) Whitesnake were a sell out (and not in a good way) band pandering to the US audience.

Lost all respect for DC for the way he treated Murray and Sykes. He shafted Murray twice and didn't seem bothered when he stopped being paid because DC was refusing to record what became 1987 due to tension with Sykes who he was becoming jealous of and the album was delayed. The fact Sykes told DC to hire Tommy Aldridge but he refused because he didn't want Sykes to have any real say in the band only to hire Aldridge for the 1987 tour shows what the others had to deal with. Murray is a mild mannered gent who got screwed. The band was never as good after this line up was disbanded.

I never really listened to any early Whitesnake, but I was in high school in the mid 80's when they were having a lot of success and I loved their music. Listening to the live version of "Slow and Easy" on this documentary, there is a part at 12:14 that sounds almost identical to a section in "Still of The Night." They must've put that in there on purpose. I wonder whose idea it was?

Although Blackmore and Coverdale didn't make up until 2012, RB really liked the Slide It In album. Gary Bushell had grudges on Coverdale, Schenker, Glenn Hughes, and a few others, and slagged them off accordingly, but I don't think Blackmore influenced him with regard to DC. Bushbaby just didn't like him, possibly because he championed Purple Mk.2 only.
Thin Lizzy were a big influence on Whitesnake from Day 1. The Time Is Right For Love, from Trouble, was a ringer for For Those Who Love To Live (Fighting). Bad Company too - hear Trouble itself and imagine it on Straight Shooter.

I loved the early Whitesnake, although never saw them live. I have seen them twice since, once in around 2008 in Sydney, where the show was not so bad (the Enmore in Sydney), and the second time supporting The Scorpions in around 2019 in Sydney. Whereas the Scorpions were professional, still sounded great and wowed the audience, Whitesnake were disappointing. Coverdal's vaoice has largely gone, it looked as though he has had a few facelifts, and he had metal type guitarists.

Oh yeah, when slide it in was released in late 1983, it was with the band that had a bassist named Colin Hodgkin's (sorry if I spelled it wrong) that really didn't fit in with the music the group was trying to become also, you have two members with huge egos (David & Cozy Powell) but it would be this album that really started to open doors for the band in the USA.

Having long hair was part of why I kept practicing, practicing and more goddamn practicing. In that era, without long hair, you'd be passed over at auditions before you played a note. I wanted my playing to reflect that my hair was not the reason I got the GIG, only the reason I got the AUDITION.
Because I had big plans after graduation, I refused to cut my hair at age 14, starting at a Christian private school where long hair was "not allowed" on boys. I allowed myself, thank you very much, O Lord.
It occurred to me that I didn't have to care WHAT was "allowed" or "not allowed" because I NEVER ASKED their opinion of long hair on males in the first place.
The rule was enumerated in the student handbook which I found somehow even MORE useless than than God's infallible Word, the Holy Bible* itself.
Imagine my heartbreak when I was forced to leave an institution of "Christian Education"-an oxymoron if there EVER WAS one-to join the "communist" public school system....where I did in fact study Marxism in Political Science, Senior year.
*1 Corinthians 11:14~ “Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him?" Cool story, St. Paul!

the problem with Whitesnake has always been Coverdale's songwriting. Every album has 2 great songs and a load of filler, until 1987. Slide it in was a step in the right direction but still way too much filler. I would say the Slip of The Tongue was his peak as a writer, even though I can't stand the guitar on that record.

I have heard "Whitesnake" twice: First a concert on cassette in the year 1982 in a bus for the pupil exchange from Germany to France. Just terrible noise and that usual guitar solo at overlength. ABBA took over after that. Then I saw them on TV with "Here I Go Again". Cheesy hair metal sucking in excess. At school we, the boys, were into Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, but no Whitesnake fans anywhere. It must have been a girls´ thing like Def Leppard. Dave´s shlong, so long, so what?

Slide it In is a brain-deadeningly awful record. Who knew it was possible to come up with anything worse than the title track? They managed. Spit it Out is a contender for the most crassly stupid and offensively dumb record ever made. Weirdly, however, Guilty of Love is a gem. Like the best songs from previous albums you could imagine The Four Tops singing it. The rest of it is witless, bloodless dross with terrible arrangements, or just toe-curlingly derivative: Slow an' Easy.
