Machine Head was first album purchased in 1973 when I was just a lil shaver...followed them ever since. What an extraordinary band!

Saw Deep Purple in '74 and '76. ELO opened for them in '74.....great concert! I was only 20 feet from the stage. Blackmore and Lord were absolutely phenomenal! '76 featured Aldo Nova and The Scorpions. That was the 🔥 album. Both outstanding shows. Very memorable to this day. 💖 I'll be 70 this year and we're all losing so many great musicians. Nice to be able to fire up any and all of these great musicians whenever needed.

Deep Purple was the biggest band in 1973 and 1985 They sold over 100 million albums. It's sad they don't get the recognition that Led Zeppelin does. They are definitely pioneers of heavy metal along with Black Sabbath.
exactly, deep purple was a huge force in the 70ies, in this times one of the biggest bands in the world (as big as zep, floyd or the stones and miles bigger than sabbath- see blackmores biography "the black knight"), blackmore was the blueprint and main influence for all the shredders in the 80ies. the recognition for purple was higher in the 70ies and the 80ies. i remember when i was a teen and deep purple came together to reunion in 1984, it was a global sensation. and- it must be something wrong in case of counting their gold and platinum reccords by the RIAA, they were the biggest selling artist in 1973, but made in japan or machine head sold "only" 1million and 2 million records in the us till today? burn is only nominated with gold? there must be thomething wrong,.. they sold 15 million records allone in 1973 said a manager from the record company at that time....yngwie malmsteen said in an interview deep purple were in the 70ies bigger in sweden than black sabbath and led zeppelin together, here in germany it was near the same. for their heritage reputation it would be maybe better they splitted complete after perfect strangers.

I think the lineup changes didn't help their momentum. They were four different bands in their first run. I like all versions of Purple from 1968-1976, but MK II is my favorite.
Glenn was my #1 influence and involuntary mentor when I learned to play bass as a teenager. I learned all his bass lines which greatly widened my horizon, but the most important lesson Glenn taught me is much bigger than that, and that is - you gotta play the bass with attitude! Most kids miss that part and never get anywhere but Glenn has given me quite an edge with that. Glenn, if you ever get to read this - thank you, thank you, thank you...!!!
I had albums by all 3 lineups & , while I liked all of them, the "Mark 2" , with Gillan & Glover, was hands down, the best!

Mrk 1 2 3. Mark 4 was a disaster because Tommy Bolin could not play live. To high along with Glenn Hughes. The lp come taste the band was a very good lp. Just live they stunk because of Tommy and Glenn.

This band is absolutely legendary. They influenced so many generations of Rock and Metal bands over several decades. Every lineup had its fantastic masterpieces. Purple forever! ❤️❤️❤️🤘🔥
One of the greatest rock bands in the world.. this is a great documentary I like Richie Blackmore's attitude comes off a bit hard but a brilliant man sometimes I think if it wasn't for his attitude it would have never been the same. It took two singers to equal the talent of Ian Gillan. Lol.. although they both have a great voice of Their Own.. three great singers

And the Album "Deep Purple" (April) is an eternally totally underrated album. Just great.
Any album of the mark 1 or 2 DP that you consider to be the worst would be the crowning achievement of any other group of that time.

Poor Nick and Rod, their bandmates did them dirty. They went behind their backs and were strung along until they were dumped over the phone. Real classy.
Rod Evans should have made it big as the lead singer for Captain Beyond, but that band couldn’t repeat the success (musically) of their first album.
Rod Evans wasn' t a bad singer but Gillan made the difference.

My first concert. 1973 March, UD Arena. I was eleven years old. It changed my life forever.
The album was Burn. I would see Ian front Black Sabbath years later.

As Ritchie chose to go in a very different direction, it’s hardly fair to rule out the rest of the band’s serious efforts to innovate and wave the purple flag. I grew up on Deep Purple, really loved their record making and performances, so when I worked with them with Steve Morse I kept an open mind. I’d worked with Steve and the Dregs and knew there was just about nothing he couldn’t do. They were fantastic. I forget the name of the DVD we made of their live performance in S. Fla but it was a real thrill for me to work with favorite influences. I missed nothing about Richie because, well, he wasn’t there. They were an amazing rock ensemble, still.
You're referring to the DVD called Perehelion I believe, performed at the Sunrise Musical Theater in Ft. Lauderdale. Great show, I attended that concert.

Saw Deep Purple in 2002 which was Jon's last year with the group. Impressed that Steve was accomplished enough to put his own signature on the classic DP guitar solos.
In particular I loved listening to Jon's interviews who always came across as a gentleman in every sense of the word.
Wonderful doc! I love ALL the Purple albums from Shades to Perfect Strangers. Every one has GREAT songs, and that’s what it’s ALL ABOUT. Even come taste the band’s songs are sooo singable… dealer, coming home, etc… just freaking amazing!

@@meryuk I’ve always wondered why the quality of Purple’s album releases fell off so quickly, starting with House of Blue Light. When I was a kid I really dug the one they did with Joe Lynn Turner, but it just doesn’t hold up all these years later.
Great journey of the superband 1968-1976
Only saw DP twice, first time was the 8th National Jazz & Blues Festival, Kempton Park Racecourse, Sunbury, UK, August 9-11th, 1968. The second time was the RAH concert with Jon Lord's Concerto - this is the first time I've seen footage of that concert.

Perfect stranger was a good mark 2 reunion but nothing last forever.
Too much problems again between Gillan and Blackmore.
In Rock belongs to the 10 best rock album ever and it was my second album after Meddle by Pink Floyd.
I still remember my mother' s face when I played the guitar intro of Speed King for the first time with maximum volume.

Both Ian and Ritchie still keep in touch and both say they are friends. Ian does say that he draws the line at performing with Ritchie.

I have always felt that the reason why Deep purple had so many bitter changes is the curse of "The Roundabout" a prequel to Deep purple where only Chris Curtis, Jon Lord and Blackmore were the constant members and others could be fired at short notice.....

I’d love to hear Glenn’s version of Dealer. I bet it is “beaching”. David’s version is really good though. CTTB is Coverdale’s best album with Purple. His voice finally came around by this point. It would be crazy if there’s a safety copy of Glenn’s Dealer sitting around somewhere.
Glenn Hughes has said he vocally recorded part of ‘Dealer’ and was surprised that the master take had his vocals, removed. Tommy’s vocal feature there-in gave it a different feel. I hope that if Glenn ever covers another Deep Purple song in the studio that it’s ‘Dealer’. As you Glenn’s vocal features on CTTB were certainly impressive to my ears.If Glenn had been the main vocalist on ‘Dealer’, then CTTBand would have been a different listening experience.

Purple isn't Purple without Blackmore. It's a Purple tribute band at best. Coming up with the Smoke on the Water riff off the top of his head or creating that solo in Highway Star is musical genius. He channeled Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, and the other great composers to think of these riffs and solos that no one else could emulate. Blackmore is they key to what made Purple great.

Bolin was nunero uno
A very long 2c from an Aussie fan whose life literally changed the moment he heard DP In Rock in 1970. CTTB is not a DP album. It is a brilliant component of a Tommy Bolin trilogy, along with Teaser & Bang, his debut with the James Gang. I saw that James Gang line-up in Jan 74 (opening for Johnny Winter). They were sensational & Bolin was on fire (and his work on Cobham's Spectrum was world-beating). He was 22 years old.
A year later, I saw MkIII at Sunbury & you could see some very large cracks. Only two left that stage with their reputation intact... Paice & Blackmore. Jon Lord was clearly not happy and his performance showed. Coverdale was almost adequate vocally but so tone-deaf with his rock-god posturing and howling, it made his every moment at the mic a cringe-fest. Then there was Glenn. Okay on bass BUT (and he'd be the first to admit) he was out of control vocally. His harmonies, so integral to the sounds of Burn & SB, were never replicated live & were so off-pitch as to be tragic. 10 weeks later, Blackmore played his last gig with them. Flash forward to Dec 75 and MkIV played Oz. Lord & Paice were doing the heavy lifting because Bolin was clearly in trouble. He was no longer that brilliant player I'd seen less than 2 years earlier, barely able to hold it together, even with his guitar open-tuned. The less said about Coverdale & Hughes, at that point, the better. This was not my Deep Purple.
Many line-ups & bands followed. Bought the albums, saw the shows. Rainbow with Dio in 76 = sensational albums & live. DP MkII in 1971 & 1984 = great albums & brilliant live. MkII in 1987 = good record but only okay live. DP with Morse in 99 & 04 = brilliant albums & sensational live. Gillan in 81 = amazing records and an absolute beast live (with Yanick Gers on guitar). Gillan in 92 (Repo Depot/Toolbox tour) = 2 good albums and a powerful but intimate "pub" show. A lot of fun. As an aside, I'd also seen Dio in his own band in 86 & with Sabbath/H+H in 1980 & 2007. He was amazing every time and the bands he fronted were worthy of their legendary legacy. And the albums!!!
Those I'd not seen live but delivered amazing records: Glenn Hughes (Dio's favourite singer) "Blues", "Hughes/Thrall" & Sabbath's "Seventh Star", Coverdale's "1987", Paice Ashton Lord "Malice In Wonderland", Glover "Mask" & "Butterfly Ball", Lord "Sarabande" & Gillan "Clear Air Turbulence".
I disagree with you whole heartily about Deep Purple live. I've seen them with Glenn and David Colorado They were excellent during the burn tour. I have seen Gillian and Glover on their big days. Deep Purple was the best live band in the early 70s. Yes, I've seen Zeppelin Sabbath also Purple was better live. You never heard the same song twice. They improvised every night. They could hold their own with Zeppelin easily. They were once the best band in the world in the early 70 to mid 70s. After that Tommy could not play live. RIP he was a great guitarist but deep Purple was to big for him at the time. Drugs did him and Glenn Hugh's in. That's why you caught Glenn on a bad night. I was luckily to see him during the burn tour.
They all did well on their own. But mark 2 was the best. Burn gave them new life and fame. Freshen up the band. The burn tour was excellent. Stormbringer was the beginning of the end. Bolin sucked live with Purple to many drugs.
@@barryrammer7906 Not disputing that you caught MkIII at the right time. I was not so fortunate. At that time, the "new boys" still had to prove they deserved to be there, which is a powerful motivator when you're sharing a stage with Lord, Paice & Blackmore.
@Ian Chambers absolutely 💯 Coverdale was a Nobody he was playing pubs. Glenn was at least fronting his own band and he had minor success with Them Trappies was definitely a good band at the time but they were nowhere near the status of purple

I loved "hush" when i listen to it, i loved "Blacknight'',"smoke on the water", i also love "burn", "stormbringer" , i loved "keep on moving" , l loved "perfect strangers" i loved "Anya" , i loved "sometimes i feel screaming". My personal opinion is that the best album was "fireball". The track " No No No" from me, is by far the best thing that Blackmore ever played" . i saw the video of recording it and Blackmore really enjoy it even if later regreat playing funky staff. The hole album is Great way ahaid of his time, very underate and i tnink was the first album that they all fell great and be a team
The level of pontification of these commentators is astonishing. This is good, this is crap.... First of all, concerning Fireball, DP was making musical kind of proggy developments in the first 3 albums. And second, Who Do We Think We Are is an amazing album.Great songs, great sound! And if you consider the level of band conflict while making it, the amazingness of it doubles!. And by the way, If Burn is such a great album (and it is), why only play and repeat the title song?

I agree… WFT is as good as any opener, Smooth Dancer and souped trooper are great. I think the bang is negative towards it because Blackmore wasn’t into it.

I bought Fireball when it came out and I liked it a lot when Machine Head came out my friends (living in Detroit) thought they sounded likr the MC5 one of the heaviest bands at the time. I like Machine Head but probably prefer Fireball.
For me CTTB is better than Stormbringer and it's very much an early indication of what came later in bands like Van Halen.

Some people like to discuss side things like is Deep Purple a real Deep Purple when they did Come taste the Band. The important thing is how good the album is. I like all Deep Purple albums starting from Deep Purple in Rock and ending with Come taste the Band. They all great on its own. I still find new sound and new small ideas that I missed before while I listen Come Taste the Band. It does not happen with Machine Head for instance. Strange, isn't it? Does anyone else has the same experience?

Again......☄moaning about "Fireball" , which was a great *album* , which after "In Rock" (which is undoubtedly great also) , is just a whole different mood , just like any album , for different times.
It's worth the price of admission alone for "No One Came" , which is one of Purple's greatest tracks.

Fireball the track started thrash speed rock. Their are good songs on that one. If you love Purple 💜 you like Fireball. We're do you go after in rock. That was a masterpiece ahead of it's time.

One of my favourite bands. I thought they were undervalued, but I see many fans of the group on networks. I still have faith that Ritchie will return for a few concerts.
Purple are over. They were over long before even Jon Lord left the band. Gillian sings like he's trying to squeeze his notes through a blender.. As for Blackmore.... he's too fat... wears his guitar too high... thinks he's living in the 15th century... and ahhhh, well... he's totally lost it.
Nobody, like absolutely nobody, in Deep Purple have any desire or wish to work with Blackmore ever again.
Faith is a good thing but never close to reality.
I missed the reunion in the 80's which was one of my rock & roll mistakes (we all make them....ie. not seeing a band when you had the opportunity) so for years, and years, and years.....and years I waited for Ritchie to stop, at least for while, playing that Ren fair shit (medieval tripe).....Finally Purple made the announcement that this was it and they were on their farewell tour (right before COVID). I took my son and went. It was a helluva show and I"m glad I went. I would suggest anyone who even thinks they like Purple, to go. Yes - it would have been nice to see them in their "hey-day"...but it was still great.
In the words of Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purple were more successful than popular. The group never had a #1 anywhere.
They would have if they succumbed to the American record execs and released Smoke On The Water as single instead of Never Before.
Youd think there wasn't a single producer involved in the entire history of the band.

Ritchie Blackmore has admitted that the Smoke on the Water riff is simply the riff from Beethovens 5th reversed. So he didn’t write it Ludwig van Beethoven actually wrote Smoke on the Water.

As far as I'm concerned, in gillen blew away Glenn Hughes in vocals!! They can say whatever they want. Glenn Hughes sounded like an unprofessional child singer when he screamed.
I know Mark 2 was only from 69-73 . But that is not a long time. Mark 3 and 4 were only for like 2.5 years . And Coverdale and Hughes made the band completely different in sound . Rainbow was also a different band from Dio and Turner . When Purple would change singers , they would change their musical sound completely.
Glenn was high and not right with the Stormbringer tour. Burn tour was awesome

Dougie White wasn’t wrong when he said Purple mark 4 were great in Glasgow 1976 (Their 2nd last show with Tommy) I was there. Evidence? The support group Pat Travers Band were booed off after 3 or 4 songs, so Purple prob’ made sure they put on a show. Tommy sounded great except on the songs he didn’t contribute to. He couldn’t emulate Blackmore .. no one with any sense would expected him to. No one could play like Blackmore in 1976 😀

Ritchie was NEVER satisfied as an musical artist and it's evident in the different bands he was part of, but and it seems he wanted to ride the 'wave' of vocal icons that fit a winning style and found a couple in his musical career, in Gillan and Dio...
A couple of things. IMO, Coverdale is a genius and the greatest rock singer. Secondly, IMO Come Taste The Band is the best Deep Purple album, Coming Home, Lady Luck, Dealer...classic

And to put it bluntly: DP could only sustain musical interest by affecting line-up changes. Once it became a Blackmore dictatorship (Rainbow) it all became really dull...

It wasn't a bad album. Had a few really good tracks on it (I happen to really like Comin' Home). It just wasn't a Deep Purple album. It was like that 1998 Godzilla movie. It SAID it was a Godzilla movie, but Godzilla was nowhere to be found! The creature in that movie was nothing like the Godzilla the world had come to know. Otherwise, it wasn't a bad giant monster movie.
Come Taste the Band didn't have the Godzilla the world had come to know and love in it.

I genuinely hate Hughes caterwauling on the live version of Burn. MkIII really didn't do that much. Burn was a great album, Stormbringer wasn't.
I think Steve Morse did a really good job replacing Ritchie Blackmore and he’s certainly as proficient a guitarist as Blackmore and a nicer guy. Pretty humble compared to Ritchie or Yngwie who is in a way Blackmore’s protege. I never saw Deep Purple live with Blackmore but I did see them live with Steve Morse back in 1998 on the Abandon tour and 2005 on their Bananas tour. I still think Perpendicular is a really good Deep Purple album.

Actually deep purple isn't deep without The Lord ! Jon Lord there's always different shades of purple.
Unfortunately Jon's cancer forced him to retire in 2002. Don Airey has been a great replacement as is Steve Morse.
The "Burn" (MK3) Line-Up sounded great in the studio but shit on stage.

It just doesn't reach anywhere close to Made in Japan. - The singing is awful (even though they are good singers as such and in a different context) and the Medleys are just not as inspired as on MIJ. It's just a pale reflection of a glorious past...

Burn wasn’t a good Purple album, it was the best imo. Saw Glenn Hughes just last week performing the Mk3 stuff. Still brilliant voice and playing. Made me very nostalgic.
