      Thank you :D. I try and get it as balanced as possible, I do feel like I rely on carb fillers a little too much at times, but at the same time, my kids are well and truly active and we have no health issues to do with carbs/sugars, so I keep telling myself we're doing ok!

      @@OurSmallFootprint I know everyone rags on carbs as the enemy in our current society... but just like fat isn't our enemy neither are carbs! as long as you are all healthy and active and receiving enough nutrients - everything u are doing is fine! your kids are all within a healthy weight range for their ages, you don't let them eat too much processed foods. you're doing good mum!

    YUMMY!!! My daughter was drooling at the sausage rolls and I was at the steamed buns. Your children are so lucky to have a mother willing to not only cook but who is so talented that she makes a variety of dishes. You say that most of the meals are on a regular rotation but how could you not! Everything looks so delicious. Love the video and hope you found everything that you were looking for on your shopping trip.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every now and again we swap something else into the rotation, but then we do something old again and wonder why that hasn't been done lol! So much can be done with the same meals, just tweaked a little :D

    Nyssa! Have a hunt for cat crates- the hard plastic ones, with the steal mesh door! Pop your rodent wire on the door- voila! a proofing crate, rodent proof!
    Sorry for the bazillion exclaimation marks, i've been pondering what works and what i used bush living to keep my sweet potatoes and breads from the possums and bush rats- i used cat crates! 😂
    Should find some around marketplace or opshops... maybe mum can help out if close by in your off shopping period? You HAVE to get one while you're there and give it a go? maybe split the dough into narrower bowls, or get the cat crate that splits top from bottom? Guine pig cages with the solid bottom will work for larger volumes, just rat mesh the metal cage part!

      Thank you Stephanie, the big difference is the lack of 'fresh' veg, we have plenty of canned/frozen etc, but I do miss that fresh veg, and normally my garden would help with that, but with the lack of garden successes this year :S

    Officially drooling ha ha! You are such a champ at creating amazing dishes out of what you have. I'm slowly getting better at this ... I find leftovers aren't a big hit here, unless I "repurpose" them in some way. I added home-made spaghetti bolognaise mince to a scooped out spaghetti squash topped with cheese and baked it (yes - I found my first-ever spaghetti squash in Queensland on a recent holiday! I've never seen them in NSW), then on the second night, I did a ravioli bake (bulk pre-made ravioli from the supermarket) with the leftover bolognaise sauce plus added grated zucchini, the scooped out squash from the previous night and baby spinach. It seemed to go down well lolz! :D I work outside the home five days a week, so meals and meal prepping are definitely a challenge. You are a source of inspiration!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of the most well received meals I've ever made have been leftovers from the night before thrown over something else lol! It's always amazing how simple meals are quite often the ones the kids rave about but the complicated stuff they couldn't care less about! Luckily most of them I make because I want them as well hehe.

    If you are having rodent issues try a deep clean. Clear off the deck entirely if you can, and pressure wash the deck. You can mop on some vinegar and eucalyptus to deter them and wipe over all your tubs. Scrub down the appliances and benches with it too. Good luck!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We've been using eucalyptus and peppermint on all the surfaces, the benches get cleared and wiped every morning before I start cooking etc, I think the issue is that they're bush rats (Possum like little critters) they don't necessarily chew through containers like brown/black rats, they just take advantage of whats around, they're also protected because they're natives, so it makes it hard to control the numbers :S. We will have to give the deck a bit of a scrub though, we try and do it a couple of times a year, we obviously sweep and give a general scrub more regularly but a proper 'spring clean' is probably due before it cools down again :D

      Generally, yes, I’m lucky, I do cater to them to a degree, one of the kids doesn’t like roast chicken, so I make him extra veg etc that night, a couple of the kids aren’t keen on coconut rice, prefer plain, that kinda thing. But in general, everything I show in these videos is served up to them as well. They all have good appetites and are generally willing to try new things thankfully :)

    Bush rats have invaded my granddaughters garden, she is not happy. A pair of king parrots took over her tomatoes as well, only her eggplants are going okay, even though some of those have been chewed on, but the rats mustn’t like them so much.

    Hello,. 😊 I was just wondering why your kitchen is outside? Is this normal for certain parts of Australia? I know it's a stupid question but I needed to ask.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there :). Yes, my kitchen is out on my patio, no, its not 'the norm' :). But we have very limited indoor space and we use that for living space with the 8 of us, so when we moved out here off grid I decided to put some decking down and put my kitchen outside so that I wasn't using up internal space and I could spread out a bit :)

      One of the videos not far before this should show it, we get a monthly hamper from a not for profit, it is $50 and has a myriad of things in it, you don’t get to choose and a lot of it is short dated etc, but it tops us up before the next grocery haul :)

      I think it depends on what ratios you are using and whether you are using fats or not, I know there's a few diff tortilla style recipes out there!
