There have been several great roadgeek sector videos of this stretch going northbound, but this is the first really high quality professional quality production of southbound.
Good to see this footage from 2015. This was right after I-5 was repaved through the Grapevine, and I took that very route into LA about six months before you did, and I found the ride was way smoother than it was when I went through there in late 2013. Back in 2013, those right two climbing lanes through there were really rough due to all the truck traffic over the years.
Thank you for the memories! I rode up this freeway almost 18 years ago this January and would love to return for another trip through the Pass (both directions).
I remember hearing about & seeing that truck route and how neat it was, and it didn’t disappoint. Excellent production, that looked like a lot of fun to drive!!
Another sensational ride, the music took a little getting use to, none the less I enjoyed this trip very much! I hope you and your family are having a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year Jim...
During the 1994 Northridge Quake, near the Interstate 5/CA14 interchange in Santa Clarita, a CHP officer was doing early morning patrol on his motorcycle. When the quake hit, the ramp from CA14 collapsed and the officer died. Thanks for another great year, Jim. Hope that you and your family are doing well (especially health-wise). We hope to see more videos in 2019.
Been over this route a number of times and I always found the funky way in which the road runs (NB/SB lanes swapping sides, many twists and turns, etc,) interesting. Also I miss those cool old button-copy signs California had forever. They gave these roads a special kind of character.
FreewayBrent here (not FreewayJim, lol). The reason for the pavement swap between northbound and southbound through 5 Mile Grade is because today's northbound lanes used to be the 2 way alignment for the old US 99. When the new lanes were constructed, it was decided that due to the sharp curves of the old alignment, that the older alignment be better suited to handle traffic going uphill. Trucks going southbound traffic going down the old alignment, with those sharp curves and downhill descent meant that trucks would occasionally burn out their brakes. The new lanes feature a gentler and straight 5% grade, meaning trucks generally handle it just fine.
@@FreewayBrent Wow, I never knew about that. Once again this road has many stories to tell. I remember my folks mentioning how this road was a very steep and winding road back in the 50's, early 60's. I've been over this road in a big truck and I know how much of a climb the NB lanes are. It is nice to know that they had trucks in mind when the road was upgraded to I-5. Also a good thing that they repaved this road recently as I remember the extremely bumpy ride going over.

Thanks for posting, very good video! I've always been fascinated with that spot where the I-5 carriages switch sides - I couldnt believe it when I saw that for the first time on Google Maps several years ago, lol!
I've seen many mountains like I-70 Colorado Isenhower Tunnel, Utah, Oregon etc. It's interesting in California how I-5 switch sides over the Tehachapi mountains 13:01
"All the feels" here with the soundtrack choices, footage; serious thrill factor, no matter how many times you drive I-5 through the Tehachapi Mountains from start to finish in both directions. Awesome stuff here!

That San Fernando/Los Angeles mileage sign was replaced from an overhead mileage sign to a standard roadside mileage sign. I use to see that sign all the time traveling from NorCal to SoCal, from the time I was a child through adulthood. When I saw that sign, I knew that we would be in L.A. in a little while.
Great video and music!! they go together well. Have been down that stretch quite a few times. Only driven it once though. I'm from NorCal and we'd go to OC mostly for Disneyland.
Very nice ride! Always did like California freeways- there is just something special about them and I never tire of seeing them, the variety they have in California! Nice ride!!!
I went through the Grapevine twice on charter buses going to and from Boy Scout summer camps way back when, so it brings back memories. That, and also, a fun fact: Except for where it narrows to three lanes each way near the OC-LA County line, I-5 is four lanes each way from north of the Grapevine to the Border.
Not at all, good question! The videos you see on here are all from vacations....road trips to see the country that my high school to college age son and I took. We were fortunate enough to go cross country three times in 4 years from 2013-2016 and have driven in all of the 48 contiguous states.
Thanks for another great video, Jim. I agree with you about driving in CA, nowhere else comes close to it. Were there any favorite drives that you had? PCH is an obvious choice but for Interstates, I always loved driving the Junipero Serra Freeway (I-280) in the Bay Area. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Wow, does this ever bring up a lot of old memories (not necessarily great ones... I was in a tuck every time I drove the Grapevine). Nice to see an old "Orange ball in the sky". I thought Union 76 was a thing of the distant past. The music is spot on!
Thank you, it wasn't an issue of worth or if it was good enough, I just did not want a repeat of the same route (albeit different direction) as the previous video, so I jumped back to the LA area and saved this one for later.
Hey there! Great ride with beautiful scenic Mountain View’s and I was curious as to how long it took to construct the entire I-5 interstate through the entire state of CA from south to north -the 800 mile span or was it done in sections? Thanks for the ride !

That road needs more energy and tempo than that song has to offer IMO, not sure about the alignments, much of I-5 was built as a completely new alignment.
I took a closer look at satellite maps, and it looks like northbound goes through a populated area to the north of Castaic at street level, so it'd seem like it'd be the old through way for US-99. And then when I look at Castaic Rd, I can see why they swapped the north and south because a viaduct likely would have cost too much. I also noticed a paintball range around the northern cross and some at-grade intersections; was there warning signage about that? Or was it closed off?
