There is one such an electric bike. It is called Elf. This one is probably too heavy & too fast for a solar panel to be practical. Even Elf could be improved with a PTFE Solar panel that uses high-efficiency cells likely from Sun Power. A custom charge controller - motor controller board that is cooled by the frame may be beneficial as well. They could produce pouch cells like a sausage chain for future models to make it lighter :) due to increased voltage. In-wheel motors may also be used. Then there could be two independent batteries with little to no cables for each motor.
It's an idea, but all I can think of are the downsides: added cost, weight and complexity, and if this is mainly for urban areas (especially in Europe), not much sunlight opportunity. A 200W panel might be lucky to generate a fraction of rated maximum, at which point I'm not so sure it would be worth it. However, someone mentioned these might be a good tropical island rental, where this idea certainly has legs. Perhaps even Mediterranean coastal resort towns.

Yup, there are stripped smarts that are outfitted with tuned and often turboed motorcycle engines , so this should be no problem.. Fast , sure, but those tyres will be gone in 100 kilometres...
I had about as much fun in a Peugeot 104 (1360cc) as anything, ever. It stepped off the line like a scalded cat and as long as I got to the traffic lights facing the other way 1st (obvs) I'd won. I'm a sore loser - wasn't sore much :D

it's soo ugly it's not . it went soo far off the scale of ugly that it transcended that and ended up in an alternative universe of ultra mega cool. I LOVE it . i'm 75 physically , going on 14 mentally , so it would be perfect for me . just pad the bumpers with some super thick memory foam and i'm good to go.

Yeah, that is the part that is insane to me. I'm not a person who normally leases, but 6,000 to buy vs 720 for 24 months is a bit insane to me. Guess you can't put that many miles on it though. Edit: And other than a tiny addition to the electric bill that should be the entire cost of ownership for the whole 24 months.

Have they started making small electric car lanes in London now also? You have cycle lanes and bikes have electric assist.... This car will just sit in a traffic jam in London with the electric taxis and buses.... You won't get to your destination any quicker.

Also a possibility to find a parking space at the destination. Also everyone not churning out fumes. Otherwise you have a point and if it's dry and light I'm better cycling (and getting fit).
@@ajpdaniels I agree most of those belching out fumes are diesels and we were led into them by the same powers that are pushing electric. I agree sitting in traffic in an electric car is better for your health as is cycling however, the green aspect being pushed by those in power is a phalacy. Don't beleive me, then look up where and how the metals required for the batteries come from and where the batteries are made and consider how they are shipped etc. Then at end of life where do the batteries go? We need to get off the battery aspect because charging them isn't green either (for the most part). Hydrogen fuel cell is much more effective in the green stakes.

That's a serious bit of kit that's 100% perfect for cities, large complexes, universities, zoos or sports parks. Would definitely be great for popping down to the shops!
So in some communities in the states you have golf cart roads, and up in the northern states in the winter you have snowmobile routes. Add to that more and more bike paths are being built with a greater emphasis on transportation instead of primarily recreation. That is what will be need to unlock this vehicle’s potential… after all it’s really “just” an electric golf cart with some added features. As such you would need to radically change society, AND change a few things about this vehicle to make it suitable to be used large scale as a transportation system. The range needs to be expanded by making its power source modular. I remember when a cell phone company had a program where you could swap out your low battery for a freshly charged battery. Being able to do that will expand this vehicle’s potential. 1 it would make it easier for rental lots to quickly turn the vehicles around and get them back into the hands of those who want to rent them. It would also make them more flexible for the private consumer. Say you want to use this vehicle for your personal daily commute to and from work, but the range is just too small for you. Having the ability to quickly replace the batteries (and carry spares in the passenger compartment ) extends the range and flexibility of this vehicle

My 2009 Polo costs 4k and is much better than an AMI or Axiom car, but for many people they have no choice but to buy those terrible, terrible licence-less cars at 15k that smell bad, sounds bad, and feel absolutly slow (since they don't even have the nice torque of the EV AMI)

As someone that’s been in a accident in a classic and drive a BMW MIN as a daily and do plenty of road trip in it as it’s so great to drive I’m glad of the modern safety design that by law is needed today. I have fond memories of the tin can that was the classic original but the crumple zone was your knees in it, side impact wasn’t a problem as you’d not be around to worry about it. Do I miss the classic falling apart and rusting away yes a bit. Great this size can still be designed with current safety regs as it must have side impact protection etc.
@@SWR112 I think this citroen doesn't need to comply to those regs so probably doesn't have any of that kit or it would also be big, like the BMW mini (I had a F56 and also owned a classic a long time ago - loved them both). BUT it does only do 26mph... so there is the difference. The BMW mini is a kind of performance car especially when specced up with JCW (or in EV form) so I know which I'd rather drive at faster speeds. TBH 60mph in my old rusty City E felt VERY fast and scary though and was plenty for me to get the thrill. HAve to go faster to feel it in the modern cars...
It's not slow, actually: In France the speed limit in towns is 50km/h, which is one of the reason "sans permis" cars are limited at ~45km/h. This car allows you to effectively drive as fast as you're legally allowed to in towns.
American here, I drive a 2015 smart. I would love an electric, but where I live there is a lack of charging stations and the weather is quite cold, so battery life suffers. My car is the smallest it can get for around here, but I do like the Citroen Ami very much. Not all of us believe that bigger is better. Horsepower wars all over again. Can't use the horsepower in most of what is driving around. 600 horsepower sitting in traffic on the way to work behind a 70 horsepower smart car and they laugh at me.
@@leonardoluc6362 I don't hold anyone up, my car can hit over 95 mph and I usually have to slow down for old people and just normal commute traffic. People who hate on smart cars because they are slow never drove one because they are afraid of being called a girly man.

Great video, the quality of the filming lately has really improved, well done! The car is oddly satisfying, it somehow feels like the future. I found it interesting that the people I noticed rubber-necking at it were an older generation, and the younger people couldn’t care less. I think that hints at a bit of a perspective shift of how younger people feel about cars. Understandable in massively congested cities, where vehicles are everywhere. It’s interesting to me, I love the utilitarian design features of it, the built on phone holder, the rubber trays, etc... perfect little city or airport hire vehicle. Well done Citreon. Never thought I’d make that statement.

The same is true of all quadricycles I guess, but at the moment they're not really very popular. Once the roads are full of them then the number of them being crashed into buses (busses?) is bound to increase.
I've been saying for yrs that there needed to be a zero gadget car, no power steering, no central locking, nothing that's not needed, with modern emission tech even a petrol engine would be so efficient I'm sure it would have been popular, sadly too late now that internal combustion engines are doomed..... Also, if manufacturers really want electric to be properly usable, they need to use the same battery packs across thier range, on quick release fixings and have battery stations, instead of fuel stations, where you can drive in with a low battery, and drive out 5 minutes later with the battery having been replaced by a charged one, for a fee similar to filling a fuel tank, long trips are totally impractical at the moment, who wants to wait hrs for a battery to charge.......
Fiat made a concept car once called the Ecobasic that was right about production ready that everyone loved but Fiat very unfortunately didn't produce, it would've been brilliant.
I don't think internal combustion is necessarily doomed. Hydrogen combustion engines are a thing, and I'm sure they'll become more available once more people start using Hydrogen fuel cell electric cars and the infrastructure is more there. I don't think it's a technology that most cars will use, but I can see it being the preferred option for sports cars. I wouldn't be surprised if Mazda go this route in decades to come, it means you get to keep all the characteristics of a petrol engine, but you can run it on a renewable fuel with no CO2 output. It is well suited to rotary engines too, another Mazda favourite.
Lots of older drivers here in rural Portugal drive around in Aixam two stroke noisy, dirty, slow microcars. These are the perfect alternative and literally half the price. I'd have one just to be able to leave my petrol Hyundai at home for 90% of the under 50km journeys I make each month. Citroen need to stop thinking of these as just 'funky city cars'. Even out in the countryside this is a great alternative to wasteful, local journeys. The fact they can be charged overnight at a normal plug socket makes them even better.
I've got to buy one, I think it's super cool and embodies the very concept of the car more faithfully than many supposed 'car people ' realise. Yeah it's slow, but in a lot of ways I can imagine it's really truly great fun, it's just a raw machine with such simplicity and purpose. Definitely one for my dream garage.
It's coming to the UK in spring 2022 :D I've put down a deposit on one because it's all the car I need for my partner and I to slash our taxi bills. Plenty for that 6 mile commute, to get groceries, take a pet to the vet etc. I think we could even drive to the lake district with a couple of charging stops but that's as far away as I'd want to go without hiring something more capable.

It's a con. The €6000 (£5000) car in France miraculously becomes a £7500 (€9000) in the UK so the scaled up child's toy that misses all safety requirements by being classified a quadracycle is worth about £2500 but they add 50% on their €6000 price point (€3000 more) on to move it from France to the UK... Plus in the UK you must be 17 years old and licensed to drive it, just because France allows 14 year-olds without a license to drive it is irrelevant in the UK. I'm not even sure that rule applies across the 27 countries of the EU.

I remember it because we had one. An Ami Super. I was about 14 years old and clearly remember my mom asking me if i could find the radiator expansion tank because she wanted to check the water level. We both looked for five minutes. Couldn't find it so she popped over the road to speak to our neighbour to ask them to give their son a call and ask him to call in when he was next passing, which he did the following day. I can still remember him standing in our kitchen nearly wetting himself when mom asked him to show her where to top up the water for the radiator. For those who don't know, it's an air cooled engine... I also remember coming up the A40 from London one night and her giving a short shriek when she noticed we were doing 90mph! She'd never driven that fast before. Also going on holiday. Us three kids, her and a family friend driving down to South Wales, fully loaded and it still purred along at 70mph! I remember us all laughing like idiots at how the car would rock backwards and forwards on the suspension when you came to a hard stop. And when we first got it how the headlights were shining into bedroom windows on the bend near our house and not knowing you could adjust the aim from inside the car! Cracking old car with many memories!
@@koitorob It is a disgrace that this overpriced, unsafe, unregulated pedestrian killer was given the Ami name. The Ami 8 and Super Ami were truly great cars combining practicality and economy with surprising speed and safety actually built into the design by balancing suspension, steering and the drivetrain to prevent idiotic driving and skidding. My Ami Super estate got me to work without fail over many Norfolk winters including drift snow and floods. What's more the heating/demisting always worked. This new so-called Citroen is inherently dangerous and very badly made and is not really fit for public use as it stands.
Great for London and other bigger cities, but that's it. I'd be stuck in my town.. I wouldn't even be able to get to work because it's on a duel carriageway! If it could do 40-50 I think more people would be interested.

It’s not that young people don’t want to own cars, it’s that they don’t want to pay or can’t afford £3K to insure an old hatchback that costs a fraction of that price.
Exactly, just makes me think poverty is being marketed to people as being hip, enviromentally friendly, simple and fun. Reality is the governement are legislating/pricing people off the road.
People use to repeat this "research" a lot here in Brazil. Even after a real research done in a big city here returned that youngers really want to own a car, what lacks is money.
My dads mobility scooter with optional back box and no roof cost £4500. If this costs around £5 - 6000 it's a bargain and great for people with health problems who can't get a licence. I can also see these doing well on the Costas with the hourly rental businesses who have electric scooters etc. Hope they catch on.
£6000 turned into nearly £8000 to £9000 way over budget for a quadricycle. Fine if you live in a very slow zone and single and a driveway/garage. Otherwise get a secondhand hybrid or a leaf, it’s way, way cheaper and is a car.
Seems ultimately practical for urban use in all large cities. There is a channel called "me and mon ami" where there is one used as a daily driver in France.

We bought a Nui electric scooter for our teen. Would definitely have brought this if it was available, no license, and classed as a non-car but allowed on streets in the US. It would get plenty of use in our household.
In a car-sharing scenario I can see people inadvertently leaving their phone docked in the car and losing it. Amazing piece of industrial design, though.
You could have the car beep loudly if the drivers door is open and the seat is empty but the phone is plugged in. You don't even need any computers to implement that.
This would be perfect for London. I love the design and considering I do not like driving (especially in London) I would definitely look into renting or potentially buying one.
These only new concept is making these pieces of trash electric. These dangerous 45kmh car/scooters have existed for many years and the only people that actually drive these are very old people who are unfit to drive a regular car or mentally ill people who also are unfit to drive a regular car.

I like the idea of the front and rear bumpers being the same, this reduces the production costs quite a lot and making the car more affordable to buy.
Not to mention the simple fix if, no when, someone crashes it at slow speed. And the doors are all the same.

Have they started making small electric car lanes in London now also? You have cycle lanes and bikes have electric assist.... This car will just sit in a traffic jam in London with the electric taxis and buses.... You won't get to your destination any quicker.
@@user-qq2mo1ek2r Probably right (although if there's loads of them then you'll get more on a given length of road) BUT last night as I was sitting in non - moving traffic most with engines running, one of these would be much more efficient. Also a possibility to find a parking space at the destination. Also everyone not churning out fumes. Otherwise you have a point and if it's dry and light I'm better cycling (and getting fit).
@@ajpdaniels I agree most of those belching out fumes are diesels and we were led into them by the same powers that are pushing electric. I agree sitting in traffic in an electric car is better for your health as is cycling however, the green aspect being pushed by those in power is a phalacy. Don't beleive me, then look up where and how the metals required for the batteries come from and where the batteries are made and consider how they are shipped etc. Then at end of life where do the batteries go?
We need to get off the battery aspect because charging them isn't green either (for the most part). Hydrogen fuel cell is much more effective in the green stakes.

I love 99% of this vehicle, it does need a little bit more top speed to be safe dealing with urban 40mph areas. 35mph would be ok imo
It's not a vehicle, it's a moped, hence the moped maxed speeds.
That would defeat the whole purpose
So in some communities in the states you have golf cart roads, and up in the northern states in the winter you have snowmobile routes. Add to that more and more bike paths are being built with a greater emphasis on transportation instead of primarily recreation. That is what will be need to unlock this vehicle’s potential… after all it’s really “just” an electric golf cart with some added features. As such you would need to radically change society, AND change a few things about this vehicle to make it suitable to be used large scale as a transportation system.
The range needs to be expanded by making its power source modular. I remember when a cell phone company had a program where you could swap out your low battery for a freshly charged battery. Being able to do that will expand this vehicle’s potential.
1 it would make it easier for rental lots to quickly turn the vehicles around and get them back into the hands of those who want to rent them. It would also make them more flexible for the private consumer. Say you want to use this vehicle for your personal daily commute to and from work, but the range is just too small for you. Having the ability to quickly replace the batteries (and carry spares in the passenger compartment ) extends the range and flexibility of this vehicle

My 2009 Polo costs 4k and is much better than an AMI or Axiom car, but for many people they have no choice but to buy those terrible, terrible licence-less cars at 15k that smell bad, sounds bad, and feel absolutly slow (since they don't even have the nice torque of the EV AMI)

As someone that’s been in a accident in a classic and drive a BMW MIN as a daily and do plenty of road trip in it as it’s so great to drive I’m glad of the modern safety design that by law is needed today. I have fond memories of the tin can that was the classic original but the crumple zone was your knees in it, side impact wasn’t a problem as you’d not be around to worry about it. Do I miss the classic falling apart and rusting away yes a bit. Great this size can still be designed with current safety regs as it must have side impact protection etc.

@@SWR112 I think this citroen doesn't need to comply to those regs so probably doesn't have any of that kit or it would also be big, like the BMW mini (I had a F56 and also owned a classic a long time ago - loved them both). BUT it does only do 26mph... so there is the difference. The BMW mini is a kind of performance car especially when specced up with JCW (or in EV form) so I know which I'd rather drive at faster speeds. TBH 60mph in my old rusty City E felt VERY fast and scary though and was plenty for me to get the thrill. HAve to go faster to feel it in the modern cars...

It's not slow, actually: In France the speed limit in towns is 50km/h, which is one of the reason "sans permis" cars are limited at ~45km/h. This car allows you to effectively drive as fast as you're legally allowed to in towns.
American here, I drive a 2015 smart. I would love an electric, but where I live there is a lack of charging stations and the weather is quite cold, so battery life suffers. My car is the smallest it can get for around here, but I do like the Citroen Ami very much. Not all of us believe that bigger is better. Horsepower wars all over again. Can't use the horsepower in most of what is driving around. 600 horsepower sitting in traffic on the way to work behind a 70 horsepower smart car and they laugh at me.
Good for you the enjoyment you have holding up other drivers. In reality those cars are designed to drive in City centers.

The car is oddly satisfying, it somehow feels like the future. I found it interesting that the people I noticed rubber-necking at it were an older generation, and the younger people couldn’t care less. I think that hints at a bit of a perspective shift of how younger people feel about cars. Understandable in massively congested cities, where vehicles are everywhere. It’s interesting to me, I love the utilitarian design features of it, the built on phone holder, the rubber trays, etc... perfect little city or airport hire vehicle.

The same is true of all quadricycles I guess, but at the moment they're not really very popular. Once the roads are full of them then the number of them being crashed into buses (busses?) is bound to increase.

I've been saying for yrs that there needed to be a zero gadget car, no power steering, no central locking, nothing that's not needed, with modern emission tech even a petrol engine would be so efficient I'm sure it would have been popular, sadly too late now that internal combustion engines are doomed.....
Also, if manufacturers really want electric to be properly usable, they need to use the same battery packs across thier range, on quick release fixings and have battery stations, instead of fuel stations, where you can drive in with a low battery, and drive out 5 minutes later with the battery having been replaced by a charged one, for a fee similar to filling a fuel tank, long trips are totally impractical at the moment, who wants to wait hrs for a battery to charge.......
Fiat made a concept car once called the Ecobasic that was right about production ready that everyone loved but Fiat very unfortunately didn't produce, it would've been brilliant.

I don't think internal combustion is necessarily doomed. Hydrogen combustion engines are a thing, and I'm sure they'll become more available once more people start using Hydrogen fuel cell electric cars and the infrastructure is more there.
I don't think it's a technology that most cars will use, but I can see it being the preferred option for sports cars. I wouldn't be surprised if Mazda go this route in decades to come, it means you get to keep all the characteristics of a petrol engine, but you can run it on a renewable fuel with no CO2 output. It is well suited to rotary engines too, another Mazda favourite.
Lots of older drivers here in rural Portugal drive around in Aixam two stroke noisy, dirty, slow microcars. These are the perfect alternative and literally half the price. I'd have one just to be able to leave my petrol Hyundai at home for 90% of the under 50km journeys I make each month. Citroen need to stop thinking of these as just 'funky city cars'. Even out in the countryside this is a great alternative to wasteful, local journeys. The fact they can be charged overnight at a normal plug socket makes them even better.

I've got to buy one, I think it's super cool and embodies the very concept of the car more faithfully than many supposed 'car people ' realise. It's coming to the UK in spring 2022 :D I've put down a deposit on one because it's all the car I need for my partner and I to slash our taxi bills. Plenty for that 6 mile commute, to get groceries, take a pet to the vet etc. I think we could even drive to the lake district with a couple of charging stops but that's as far away as I'd want to go without hiring something more capable.

Whats inside: 4 x 1500W HUB MOTORS (each 200EUR) on 4x 13s7p battery packs (18650) (each 300 EUR) plus 4 28AH motor controller (each 30 EUR).
It is basically a pack of 4 electric bicycles under one suspension chassy. Perfect. At 20A these hubs run at 45kmh max, which is exactly the speed of the AMI.
Consider each HUB can support up to 100KG, the entire AMI car might weight 400KG to hit 45 kmh in under 10 seconds.
After video: weight 458KG, 5500 WATT battery. Its a pretty good small AliExpress Ecar you can build by yourself :)))

30 years using that ring road and there is only one rule: too slow=danger. The shared on/off ramps only work if everyone is doing 40, so I bet that was pretty scary! Great video and a great little car. Let's hope they launch a service in the city...but no ring road use please, it won't end well!

It's a con. The €6000 (£5000) car in France miraculously becomes a £7500 (€9000) in the UK so the scaled up child's toy that misses all safety requirements by being classified a quadracycle is worth about £2500 but they add 50% on their €6000 price point (€3000 more) on to move it from France to the UK...
Plus in the UK you must be 17 years old and licensed to drive it, just because France allows 14 year-olds without a license to drive it is irrelevant in the UK. I'm not even sure that rule applies across the 27 countries of the EU.

I remember it because we had one. An Ami Super. I was about 14 years old and clearly remember my mom asking me if i could find the radiator expansion tank because she wanted to check the water level. We both looked for five minutes. Couldn't find it so she popped over the road to speak to our neighbour to ask them to give their son a call and ask him to call in when he was next passing, which he did the following day. I can still remember him standing in our kitchen nearly wetting himself when mom asked him to show her where to top up the water for the radiator.
For those who don't know, it's an air cooled engine...
I also remember coming up the A40 from London one night and her giving a short shriek when she noticed we were doing 90mph!
She'd never driven that fast before.
Also going on holiday. Us three kids, her and a family friend driving down to South Wales, fully loaded and it still purred along at 70mph!
I remember us all laughing like idiots at how the car would rock backwards and forwards on the suspension when you came to a hard stop. And when we first got it how the headlights were shining into bedroom windows on the bend near our house and not knowing you could adjust the aim from inside the car!

The Ami 8 and Super Ami were truly great cars combining practicality and economy with surprising speed and safety actually built into the design by balancing suspension, steering and the drivetrain to prevent idiotic driving and skidding. My Ami Super estate got me to work without fail over many Norfolk winters including drift snow and floods. What's more the heating/demisting always worked.
This new so-called Citroen is inherently dangerous and very badly made and is not really fit for public use as it stands.
Great for London and other bigger cities, but that's it. I'd be stuck in my town.. I wouldn't even be able to get to work because it's on a duel carriageway! If it could do 40-50 I think more people would be interested.

Exactly, just makes me think poverty is being marketed to people as being hip, enviromentally friendly, simple and fun. Reality is the governement are legislating/pricing people off the road.

People use to repeat this "research" a lot here in Brazil. Even after a real research done in a big city here returned that youngers really want to own a car, what lacks is money.
My dads mobility scooter with optional back box and no roof cost £4500. If this costs around £5 - 6000 it's a bargain and great for people with health problems who can't get a licence. I can also see these doing well on the Costas with the hourly rental businesses who have electric scooters etc. Hope they catch on.
This is a fitting successor to the original Citroen Amis 👍 sadly we will never see these here in Australia

£6000 turned into nearly £8000 to £9000 way over budget for a quadricycle. Fine if you live in a very slow zone and single and a driveway/garage. Otherwise get a secondhand hybrid or a leaf, it’s way, way cheaper and is a car.

We bought a Nui electric scooter for our teen. Would definitely have brought this if it was available, no license, and classed as a non-car but allowed on streets in the US. It would get plenty of use in our household.

In a car-sharing scenario I can see people inadvertently leaving their phone docked in the car and losing it.
Amazing piece of industrial design, though.
You could have the car beep loudly if the drivers door is open and the seat is empty but the phone is plugged in. You don't even need any computers to implement that.
Relax, most of us have it glued to our body. If I left the car without the phone and a kidney, I would first notice the missing
phone.
This would be perfect for London. I love the design and considering I do not like driving (especially in London) I would definitely look into renting or potentially buying one.
