- 8 years ago today I uploaded my very first video to TH-cam with my Mini Roadster JCW. Many things have changed since then. A hobby has become a full time job and I have driven and featured many amazing cars, but the one constant on the channel in my Mini. I have done some great mods but I have gone too far and now I need to take a step back and soften her up a little. Ruby Roadster is going to the next level...

I think this is what happens when we get older ! A time comes, at least it did for me, when original factory spec is more appealing.😀
😂😂👍
Thanks for response ped👍 I have my own Ruby, I’ve followed you for last 7 years, knowing I wanted to mod my r59, I went the Lohen route, I had the 2 remap quaiffe dif and ttv clutch power flex bushes put in and stx springs and dampers put in and set for fast road and track, at 62 I still love the big pops and bangs!!! Thanks for showing me the way It’s a special little car👍👍👍
9:45 - The second I seen you driving with a big smile on your face I already knew you were going to say the car puts a smile on your face everytime. Me too, Im 41 and I feel like a P plater again! I have a 2012 R58 JCW (red with black stripes). Ive had it since 2016 and it never fails to make me smile like your listening to the best song ever!
The sway bar mounts and suspension bushings are a common issue with these Minis when they go bad and causing knocking noises.
I agree Peter, pops and bangs are great for the 1st week or so. and then it becomes intrusive. And it annoys your neighbors when you come home late a few nights in a row.
Yay! It's Ruby! This just reminded me that I was overtaken by a Mini that pooped and banged on the override sometime last year. I thought it was hilarious and was so glad the somebody else's car had and not mine! Oh and I purchased a classic Mini1000 about 20 years ago. It only had 5 months MOT and was rusty, but working. I used it to get to work and back during that time, and even though massive rust failed the next test, I reckon that it was £150 well spent. BUT, that was when I realised that Minis are pretty damned uncomfortable for 50 yr old peeps. 😂 So I let it go to a guy who drove up from Cornwall to Exeter with a trailer. I'd advertised it as MOT failed due to rust. But when they turned up and I heard that he was buying it for his lad's b'day to set it up as a MiniStox racer, I refused, I refused the £30 I was asking, and donated it to their cause!
As a 52 year old long term viewer, I couldn’t agree more. Look forward to seeing Ruby get back to being a fun road car.
👍
We laughed at the overrun in fact I nearly choked on my drink 😂. As a 2 MINI family (F56 JCW & R60 MCS ) and having heavily modded MINIs in the past we know what you’re going through with the decisions on Ruby.. the squeak is hilarious.. can’t wait to see what Ruby is like when finished 👍👍😎😎 Also I blame you after watching your Mods on Charlie MINIa few years ago for me spending loads on the CmanS. 😂😎😎👍👍👍
She’s going to look awesome. Tune in next Monday to find out what we are doing 👍
You ram-raided Halfords and now you've come out the other side. Many of us have over the years mate. At least there isn't anything that's irreversible. Looking forward to the video where it all gets sorted and Ruby becomes a good road car again and particularly where you get rid of those wretched pops and bangs.
I can’t wait either 👍
Great to see Ruby back, your reviews are THE reason I have Alice (Cooper) in the garage, can’t find anything to replace her so she’s my keeper. Many Thanks.
Love the name 👏👏👏
Good to see Ruby back. Would be nice to see other mini content too. Been following the R52 build, but seems to be going on a while. I have a 210 JCW R52 and GP1 myself and loved the mini content you've done over the years. Happy new year to you and Tracey.
Yeah. We’ve had a few set backs. More to come very soon though 👍
Thank you Sir Pete for the update. So glad your getting ruby back up to daily driving fun!!
Great video!! I still have my two boys!! My 2014 Mini Roadster and 2015 Coupe!! Love them and so happy to own them ❤
That is awesome!
Hi Ped
Goo to see Ruby Roadster back in the frame, thought she had fallen out of favour.🤭 Age & time are great levellers, and now await to see the move back to a useable road car, and thank god goodbye to the “pops & bangs) we have all been there, and come out the other side, a little wiser.😉
She’s always been my baby 🥰
Good to see Ruby back front and centre. Your reviews and mod videos are what finally convinced us to get a roadster a couple of years ago...
Great to hear!
Great to see Ruby back on the channel! Whilst I understand the need to evolve the channel, it's this kind of 'normal' content I really enjoy! 👍
Hope to bring more ‘normal’ content this year 👍
HaPpY 2024 thank fcuk you came to your senses with those ludicrous pops & bangs. Hated them when you first videoed Ruby with them.
I am pleased you realised how mad your mods were. Great to have her being loved and respected once more.
😂😂😂
So pleased you are addressing the two areas I didn't like on Ruby - I've never been keen on the "slammed" look, and I always thought the novelty of pops and bangs would grate after a while! Nice to see you still love her after 8 years and continue to lavish attention on her.
👍
Modifying any car is going to be a journey of discovery. It can take several attempts to get it right for you. The only advice I would give is on the suspension. Get a setup that is easily and widely adjustable. This will enable fine tuning to how ‘you’ want it. I had Bilstein shocks on my E34 M5 many years ago and they were superb! 👍🏼
Ruby and your videos were the reason for me to buy a R59 JCW. Still love the care and looking forward for the modifications. The past years were a great journey with you. Thank you!
Ah that’s amazing to hear 👍
I have had the pleasure of driving two icon 2 minis, the press black one with blue trim and the warbird . Both amazing to drive
Love Warbird 👌
When I got my 2020 countryman a year ago, you gave me the first human perspective.a fair shake and I thank you👍🏿😊🕺🏿
🙌
I’ve had my F56 Coop since split new factory ordered it will be ten years old in April. One of the first F56 on the U.K. roads 👍 Only in 34k miles but it’s done some fantastic road trips and holidays. I came for the MINI.
I love sport mode even in my Cooper, the wheel is so much nicer. It a mod’s regret situation, you ran with it like many do in the MINI. I knew a few who started out with beautiful MINI’s slowly and it’s taste thing but to me slowly destroyed them and took the shine off terrific standard Cars.
You should listen to James May ‘Keep it standard’😂😂. You will have probably spent a fortune modding and unmodding it. Hopefully the clicks have offset the cost, and some but the brake squeal and machine gun pops on the over run would also do my head in …. I’ve got another 10 years head start on you TBF 🤦♂️
I'm on my 4th car since you started the channel Pete 🤣
Really enjoyed watching your journey, and content, fantastic entertainment.
Never wanted a modern MINI though, each to their own, I have my achievable dream now, an OG M2.
There is a famous Malcolm in the Middle episode called "Hal Quits" where he creates a painting in his garage and can't stop adding layers to it until it finally drives him mad.
I kept thinking about this as I chuckled my way through the video. As you get older, you will find keeping to the factory spec seems a more attractive option!
8 years ago you had better sound quality - that's for sure XD I recommend doing something about it, seriously ;) Love!
I am struggling with a new mic set up. I’ll get there. Sorry 😢
Good to see Ruby back that's why I started following you all those years ago. Had KW coilovers on mine and they were perfect.
Awesome! Thank you!
Super stoked to see this series with Ruby. Your early videos with her is what got me excited about your channel. And hunting down my own Roadster, Nebula. Not a JCW but I love this car so so much. Thanks for the fun!
I enjoy your videos and podcasts. Thanks for doing them. This one is a great encouragement that the manufacturers tend to have a pretty good idea about how to set a car up for its intended purpose (and, from a biased perspective, especially BMW/Mini). Happy New Year!
So glad to see Ruby on the channel again. She’s been hiding in the background for way too long. I’m looking forward to seeing her transformation.
More to come!
Respect for admitting you got it wrong. Just bought an R53, most I looked at were heavily modified and not done well. Returning mine to stock. Its what made me fall in love with the car in the first place.
Congrats on the 8 year anniversary
Thanks 🙏🏻
I know exactly what you mean: I did the same thing with my Lotus Elise S1 111S after a rear Bilstein packed up.
I'd done some track with the car so replaced the Billies with Nitron wide body and 'uprated' Eibach springs....it's now too stiff for road use!
I'll probably get a set of Bilsteins as they are a sensibly engineered compromise which took a lot of fine tuning by Lotus to arrive at. It also has the ceramic/metal discs....lovely! No more brake dust...
Nice to see Ruby again. Finally I’m vindicated for saying that I hated the pops and bangs when you first showed us 😛 If I recall correctly Prescott didn’t appreciate pops and bangs either!
Love the channel and I miss Charlie Clubman. I actually recently bought a 2024 JCW Clubman that looks just like Charlie clubman. (silver white with red mirror caps and red strips, only difference is the multitone red to black roof). It came with blacked out trim and whatnot to look like the modified version you had. I will call her Charlie Clubman Jr (or the 2nd) with your blessing.
That would be amazing. Send me some pics 👍
Very interesting. Delighted you are going to address these issues. It's actually very interesting that we mere mortals believe we can build better road cars than the manufacturer who probably spent tens of thousands in researching these issues and deciding on the right compromise for fast road use. Can't wait to see how it goes. We'll done you 51 year old😂
Glad to see the Mini back on the channel, your reviews of the JCW helped when I actually went and bought a new one around 18 months ago.
Great to hear 👍
Great to hear 👍
What a great car, very jaleous! Looking forward to seing your progress
Thanks! Tune in at 6pm today for the next instalment 👍
Thanks for honest review of when over modding gets annoying, maybe also mention the cost effect on your insurance...
Happy Octo-versary! Time flies!! Lovely to see Ruby again.
Thank you! 😊
A happy new year Ped
It’s so good to have a new set of videos on Ruby. I’ve loved all the ones you’ve done to date and it’s great to have someone acknowledge sometimes you can go a little to far in making changes that actually change your driving relationship with the car
👍
Nice to see that the pothole has been repaired as you approach Lavant! Don't envy the person driving that truck through the narrow bit! 😁
The new mods are a good idea, there is such a thing as over doing it and you're doing the right thing!
Welcome back Ruby and Happy New Year!
I hope so!
It’s a excellent looking car Ped, been a car guy like yourself when people like us hold onto cars for this amount of years says a lot about this particular vehicle, so she must be really special car.
Glad to see Ruby. I've used quite a bit of the Ruby content as inspiration for my own R59. I can't wait to see the upgrades.
Red mudflaps you just about got away with, we smiled, pops and bangs, NEVER 😆
😂😂😂
I have the same car, and from the same year 🙏 Great job promoting this model, i really love your videos!
Great to see Ruby back on the channel. It was your videos that inspired me to buy my JCW. Just about to get it mapped. Think I might give the pops and bangs a miss after watching this.
Looking forwards to the next episode.
I would 👍
I bought an R56 mini cooper S a few months ago, so now I fully understand the mini love.. usable power with smiles a plenty.. I need some new brakes, so I won't be getting those 😅😅
Pleasantly surprised by a return to some MINI/Ruby content. 🤩 That content is what drew me in to your channel- and although Porsche is my first love when it comes to car makes, that wasn’t why I turned to your content. I have to admit, I hadn’t watched your channel in quite a while due to the migration away from MINI.
Don’t get me wrong- happy you are a successful FT content creator now - always wish you the best. Looking forward to seeing how Ruby turns out after the changes. 😊 Happy New Year!
Hahahahaha the pop and bang. A little yeah, but not a spitfire plane, Jesus 😅
Ruby’s back, enjoyed this Pete more on Ruby and Minis. My wife has a 2005 liquid yellow Cabrio with pops and bangs and she’s shy to drive out the village 😂
Nice 👌
Good to see Ruby again brings back fond memories of driving the R58/R59 JCW at the factory , see what you mean about the squealing and popping its gone a bit too far, having said that our F54 JCW is too quiet and wouldn't mind a bit of popping
👍
Yay Welcome Back Ruby!! Looking forward to this little series of upcoming videos!
Yay, thank you!
Happy New Year. Thanks for the Mini content. I started watching you because of it, and appreciate it. Like you, I have "over-modified" one of my Minis, and had to back off. There is a fine line between improving a daily driver, and ruining a daily driver trying to make something you don't need. I've settled on EBC brakes, the standard suspension, and slight MAP improvements. It makes for an improved daily driver. Looking forward to the results of your work.
Nice 👌
I knew from the very start that you were going to mention the pops and bangs from the exhaust! 😂😂
😂😂😂
Hi Pete! Glad you’re keeping her and smoothening her out.👌 Again, have a great year. I’m profiting from a weeks’s holiday to catch up on videos and Drivetorque podcast!
Have fun.
Cheers, Tom
Thanks Tom 👍
Pops and bangs are great XD
Good decesion....nice to see Ruby again...the Roadster is a beauty, love the R59 👍
👍
Hi Pete happy new year to you and mrs PP! I too have a R59 JCW in reef blue-owned since 2016-wouldn't part with it.Puts a smile on your face every time you drive it! kept for shows only has a mere 12k miles.I have done (hopefully ) tasteful mods and have just acquired a set of JCW Recaro CS,s to be fitted soon.I have been with you since that first video and respect what you have done with your "brand".All the best Dan
Poor Pete is getting old - welcome to the club m8 hahaha
Oh yes 😂
Thanks Pedro for this one and thanks for being so open and honest. I often wonder if mods can sometime do more harm than good. I guess one never knows until it's done and out on the road. I can see why Tracey won't drive it, so probably best to get it back to how it was. Take care, HNY to all.
Indeed 😂
Totally agree with your proposed mods, those squeaks and bangs would drive me mad 😅 lovely car, will be great to use more often when the changes are done 👍
You and me both!
Great to see an update on Ruby Roadster. Think I remember saying at the time the brakes were a bit overkill.
Good job going for bilstein, probably the best option out there
Thanks! 👍
We have all been there Pete.. it seemed a really great idea at the time! 😂
😂😂😂
It's really good to see Rubyback in your video , I watch a lot of the up grades you did , I'm glad it's back , can't wait to see the next video of Ruby 😂
Tune in next Monday 👍
I have the coupe version on this in the same colour because of you! I'm in Northern Ireland. I love mine! in 2 years I will own her and I want to upgrade her
Great to hear 👍
Excellent. Owned three minis and waiting on my fourth to be built later this month. Greatly enjoy your content (across the board).
Awesome, thank you!
Love the Mini videos most of all the others are interesting but it’s the Minis
That give the best watching. Anyhoo Happy New Year🎉
Best of luck with your channel in 2024 👍👍👍
Thank you 🙏🏻
I wondered if you have over done it. I would love to see her back. I think that is why you loved your previous mini.
About time!!!!
I personally don’t like the stance but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
She’s going up a bit 👍
Haven't been watching for a bit and glad to come back to a mini focused vid. This is a sobering piece as it reminds me to keep mods to aesthetics and tyres. Always tempted to push the envelope on performance but my cars serve too much general duty to make it a reasonable choice. HNY!
Welcome back!
Great choices. I was over the “pops & bangs” awhile ago. I thought they were kinda cool the first couple of times I heard them, but got over it quickly! I prefer to just hear the sound of the engine decelerating. Great video, I can’t wait to see more Mini content! Happy New Year to you and Mrs. P!
I totally agree!
Brilliant Ped, looking forward to seeing the change (return)! I loved my R58, awesome to drive, and plenty of power for the stiffer chassis! It's definitely worth fitting an AEM induction kit, nice 'hidden' addition, and a wee but extra power. I'm not sure I would put the chrome surrounds back on, I think the black surrounds blend better especially being black, the black and red go really well! Waiting with much excitement...😅
It’s definitely staying black 👍
It's good to see an honest review, but I'm glad I didn't listen to your earlier podcasts.
I've got one of the few R56 JCW's produced with the flappy paddle gearshift tucked away, I love the car as does my wife. I've often considered having it breathed on a little, but because it's a low mileage car and has always been serviced and MOT'd at the main dealer, I've always resisted the temptation and watching this podcast makes me glad I did.
The R56 JCW is a great little car, and even in standard form, a B road blast never fails to leave a smile on your face.
Having said that, I'm fortunate enough to have other cars that can provide me with a speed fix every now and then.
I must admit, I've always found the pops and crackles a bit juvenile and embarrassing, even on my bog standard JCW, especially when there are lots of people about. But then again, I'm knocking on a bit in years now.
Driving a load of brand new cars really shows how much NVH is on older cars with miles etc.
Oh yes 😳
Hi, I mu st say your videos have certainly encouraged me after I bought a 50k JCW convertible. Since then I’ve now become to love the JCW Clubman, I’m getting a new one in a couple weeks after having a 2020 clubman. It drives amazingly well for a stock car.. power, handling and comfort levels are excellent. Roy Leicester.
That is awesome!
Followed the ruby roadster journey since before covid. Never considered a JCW roadster until very recently. Should be picking up my 2015 example in the next couple of weeks and cannot wait!
I’ve got fed up with over the top modifications on my other cars. Never really been satisfied with the performance mods I end up doing. Definitely going to keep her as stock as possible, maybe a few simple visual mods like a de chrome, and some UJ lights.
Looking forward to seeing more roadster videos!
Wow you have done some.stellar work on ruby!
👍
Happy New Year Peter! That Porsche Motorsports Jacket is Mega! Thank you for making a new video on Ruby.
Same to you!
Firstly Happy New Year 🎉, bless you, I remember seeing how excited you was on your video where you demonstrated the pops and bangs 😂, and now your removing them. I think your right doing what you have planned, it’s ok having all these modifications, but you need to have a car that’s fun but also enjoyable to drive as a daily. Wishing you the best of luck with the de modifications.
Cheers Boys 👍
im gonna say it again
im in love with the carport you got lol
lovely old structure
happy new year dude
Getting converted into a proper enclosed garage this year 👍
Although you are cringing, I think this is exactly the journey you needed to take with Ruby. Ie, modifying her completely, then dialling it back to exactly where it should be - a no compromise car that still brings a smile to your face. Well done for doing the video - most would try and justify their steps and say ‘this is what I wanted’, so this is refreshing. The best bit - 13:10 !! Not sure of the demographic of your subscriber family, but I bet 99.99% will be raising a nice glass of Amarone to this, for the 0.01% that are choking on their WKD blue!
LOL 😂
This sums up car modifying for me, people think they want a track car on the road until they have to nip to Aldi for a few bits and start to hate it and eventually don't want to drive it. You can make a fast road car without the extremes of racing brakes and OTT suspension. Not to mention that daft map dear lord!
Agree with your changes back to a more standard spec.
👍
Oh my god, that pop and bang map must go first ... OEM+ nice and subtle mods. Have never been a fan of the slammed look it must be so unpractical on our pothole bumpy roads. Definitely would love to see a dedicated R56 track day car build. Happy New Year everyone 😀
Manic motorsport maps which is what lohen use well there version,Was notorious for pops and bangs, Ruby I’ve followed from day one Pete and safe to say you have transformed enjoyed but as said time comes to change things, I’m sure you can get her back to how you want, look forward to watching update I would love to own a set off Alcon brakes for my r56 JCW for track days and possibly going into Miniclubsport challenge this year.
Drop me an email and make me an offer. Hardly any wear 👍
ped.greaves@gmail.com
Happy New Year and thanks for this upload. I keep thinking I had made a huge mistake swapping my Mini JCW for the i-Pace until I watched this and heard those pops and bangs on over run. My car had the bluetooth controlled pro tuned exhaust and although it sounded good occasionally it did grate a little and you being 51 I have nearly 10 years on you so it did feel like time to change from a classy boy racer car and although I did buy the Civic as a 2nd car after your upload on it I swapped it for something more practical with a tow bar recently so I guess as my 60th looms ever closer I guess I have grown up.
😂😂😂
Nice looking car Pete its going to be veryvaluable in a few years
Love the honest video. Don’t see many admit that “modified” isn’t always the best. Well modified is best when you’re 19 but as you get older things change haha.
Changing the brakes, suspension and stupid fart map will make you fall back in love with it.
Defo getting older 😂
It’s a maturing thing Pete !!! Hanging on to your 20’s is so much fun though !!! Looking forward to the vids on Ruby, as she started this social media mega motor channel 👍🏻🍻❤️
Coming soon!
Glad to see Ruby back on the channel!!!
I was worried you were going to get rid of her but great idea what you’re going to be doing. Also get rid of the tiny dent under you passenger side headlamp!!!
Yeah. Should probably sort that 😬
Watching with interest with the planned changes. My son has just bought a Cooper Challenge 210 which has the JCW Pro Exhaust (the Bluetooth button operated one!). He is 20 so pops and bangs are great for him. He wants to mod it over the coming years so I will guide him with classy and quality mods guided by you!!!
The Challenge 210 is the best Mini they ever made if you ask me. That Pro exhaust is worth a fortune. Very sort after 👍
Looking forward to both minis being done by Darren. 👍
Great to see Ruby on the channel again! Would love a JCW Roadster but for now my ‘14 R55 Clubbie Cooper D will have to do! Looking forward to seeing what you do to the suspension - mine’s just gone over 76k miles and the suspension is knocking like a b#%€$*d!! Roll on a bit of Darren magic! 👍🏻
Happy to see you talking about Ruby again. It's because of you I now own a Clubman and was gutted when yours was written off! It's my 5th Mini and my absolute favourite and it's a real shame they have stopped making it. Would have loved to have seen a hybrid/electric version of it although I am not convinced that electric is the future.
Still miss my Clubby 😢
I always think to modify to your personal taste aesthetically is great as it can improve the look of your car massively ( I have a r56 cooper S that I’ve done this too) but generally, I feel if you want more power then it’s better to buy a stock car that comes with more power! Glad you’re doing some content on ‘real’ cars that a lot of us actually own & drive 👍🏻
Fitting a set of Bilstein B6 with a gentle spring drop will improve the ride, but still give you handling.
That’s the plan 👍
Happy New Year PP….. Never thought the pops and bangs were a good idea tbh and at least you’re not thinking about orange mudflaps 😂… Look forward to the vids as always. Geoff
You never know 🤔😜😂
