For some odd reason I had a weird dream about your boat last night, that dream you like Andy's boat better so you sold sv seeker and started to building another boat.. it must have been them mushrooms that I ate with my beefsteak,, you guys keep enjoying yourselves and keep having fun wish I could join you

Does anyone have suggestions on a watt meter that has more of the features that Doug wished his had?
Wy 220/120volt ?
Wy not 12/24 volt compressor cooling system .
You have fridge and friezer in 12/24 volt.
I use one from lg 12/24volt 5/2.5a its how you connect it.
I try to use direct from the battery than i use battery to converter to make 220volt (my case)
Is use Victron 2x 1200watts converter 220volts on 2x 150ah lipo4 battery 12volt connect on solar panels .
I can charge the lipo4 with the alternator thanks to a dc-dc charger what is lockt on 20a so the alternator do not blow up .
I use a 70a alternator on the boat .
This alternator do 70a if the engine run even on low speed .
10:49 keep the sides of the fridge clear, the evaporators are embedded in the walls, the harder it is for it to reject heat, the less efficient it will get
A really good advice, many people may wonder why there is no condenser in the back as you see it on some of those (or some fans) and afterwards wonder why the sides get hot, but still pack it tight into some corner, or even worse, as my grandma did (it was not actually a chest freezer) put a nice looking tablecloth over it...
Another thing why it may not use exactly the power you estimate, it will change all the time. on a cooler day it will use less. and immediately after you switch it on for the first time, it will draw more until it comes down to temperature. If you load it up with warm stuff, it will draw more. So best monitor those over a few days.
17:01 Cool how you put the kWh/day info on your old free freezer! Very Informative video.
Love the chest in the water. LOLnice work!
to check amps you can measure across the breaker once its turned off.
I told you in the last video he was in, he’s looking down thinking yea I shit and I’m gonna do it again to lol
It's always like meeting a cool friend here fun to talk and having a beer or none but having the feeling that it was nice to see.
FYI freezer is going to rust away before it wears out, but the information was wonderful
Nice to see that the videos have been getting more views without clickbait!
It's hard to know what people consider clickbait. It has to be a topless girl before I think it qualifies.
@@SVSeekerGenerally, it means that the title is undescriptive.
For example: YOU HAVE TO HAVE THESE 4 GADGETS RIGHT NOW, and it's just a bot that just narrates random Kickstarter pages, or HUGE EMERGENCY ON THE HOMESTEAD, and it's about preparedness.
So far, none of your titles have qualified as clickbait, in my opinion.
@@user2C47 Just wait until you see the topless thumbnails.
Thanks SV Seeker, on telling-us about Watt's on using old deep freezer's. That bird had to find a new home. what a mess to cleaned-up..
I'm just hoping for a lot more rain. : )
So many lines on a junk rig! You gotta have a crew!
Great use of the power meter. Was going to suggest a clamp meter but you showed one. For the bird issues you could glue some spikes to the tops of your upper structires, as long as they wouldn't interfere with your electronics or access. Anti-bird devices oftem come in strips, which you might be able to glue or cable-tie in place. They're often also made entirely of plastic. They don't harm, just prevent landing. Bird poo sure makes a mess!
Love to see your progress ,amazing ,just the little things .
Thanks for sharing
Thanks Doug! That was an interesting one, something everyone can think about.
Honestly Doug, this video made me rethink my parasitic electrical loss. I mean, how much money do I really want to waste every month on garbage parasitic loss for devices I might not even use everyday!!! That's just wasted money that can be spent on other things.
In AC, you also need to calculate pf.
Should make that snippet from @3:57 into a short - might help a lot of people understand that. Easy explanation.
Enjoyed this video with lots of good information. I especially liked with you rounded up to make the math easier. Thank You, Ric
Great video Doug, sorry if it was me who gave you your cold 😂😂😂.
Hope you’re feeling better
Best wishes from across the Pond 🇬🇧
Have followed you since the start of cutting medal sheets, God bless you and thanks for all the advice. doug
For a slightly more comfortable experience at the cost of more setup time, you can use smart home plug adapters to automate part of the process. For me I set it up so it comes on when I push the button, and then turns off after a minute where the current draw is below the "idle" threshold for the device. Takes some setup and faffing around on the computer to make it work, but for forgetful types like me it's also convenient to make sure I don't forget to unplug my soldering iron or rice cooker or anything, by having those ones also just automatically turn off after an hour even if still drawing current.
In Doug's case, all of those smart plugs will add to the parasitic draw.
Just make sure you get the plugs with current sensors. Not all plugs have them. Also, they add more idle load, and whatever you're using as a server uses power too.
@@occulus2615 I disagree. I have about 20 Shelly1 wifi relays in my house, their standby is about .6w and about 1w when engaged. So you go from saving 7w on the TV to saving 6.4w. I think thats worth it.
What I don't think is worth it is the added complexity to now having devices dependent on WiFi on a boat. Fine for a house, but I don't think this is a good idea in a vehicle.
Thanks Doug for all the information. But we can't afford to buy any new appliances. Hell gas just jumped .38 cents in Oklahoma. 🤔🤔
Coolest dude on TH-cam.
when i was on solar full time, i put my freezer on a timer so it ran only when the solar was charging so it did not drag down the batteries over night. it worked good. thank you for the great videos.
Tie wraps sticking up on that spreader bar might keep your feathered friend from roosting up there.
Doug, there is a dc conversion kit for the starlink dish hardware. They also make a flat mount conversion kit for the dishy. Less power conversion from AC to DC and less things to catch a rope on. Hope that helps.
Throw a nice heavy folded beach towel on top of that thing, it makes a difference.
Starlink for me averages around 50watts. I ran it on a kill-a-watt for a month or so in the beginning. I only have a 600w solar array running Starlink and a surveillance security camera system. Over all, I stay under 100w consumption. So now I'm looking to add more running on the deducated solar.
Iv enjoy your adventures very much ,and I like your out look mate.
Run a small string up 8” across the top of where he lands . It works with most birds….
😂😂😂
Whatever you tossed in the water, i laughed my ass off.
Made a gif of that clip, ill use it often.
Bubba must have been eating pretty well to generate that much splatter on the solar panels. Good to have him relocate regardless. Thank you Doug for the informational video.
Have you seen the Bubba boat modified beach catamaran with a small lanteen sail, a motor and a bimini? He is a go to guy for food storage and adventuring too.
they make a prickely tape to put on the perch to keep birds off your boat
For anyone confused by the humorous juxtaposition of unrelated video clips at the start of the video: no, the cooler was not actually thrown over the side. Though, even _you_ should be able to figure that out if you just watched to the end before leaving your angry comment.
With my Kill A Watt, I set the electricity price to 10 cents per kWh. Then when I look at cost per day or cost per year, just multiply by 10 to get kWh.
Good idea
Quick question. If the batteries are only charge to a bit over half, why would the charge controllers be in float? Shouldn't they be in bulk?
The difference in amps is minimal, but if I have kicked the engine on for any reason, it's chargers on the alternator will make the solar chargers flip to float.
@@SVSeeker understood. Thanks for the response. I use the same charge controller in my camper van... Just curious
Just replaced old classic European fridge with freezer by big side-by-side American style fridge and freezer. Old one was using around 2.5kWh a day, the new one goes from 1 to 1.2kWh a day ... and we can stuff much more things inside
I bought an outgoing model freezer from Costco, a Danby 7 cu.ft. convertible freezer/fridge. What's interesting is that it only draws 50 - 55 W when running as a freezer, and it runs about 50% - 60% duty cycle even when equilibrated and located in a cool basement. So not very high performance in terms of being able to cool down a lot of mass quickly. But it gets the job done for me. Similar total kWh/day to the one you have.
You just did what we as kids did shutting everything in the hous off, to try and stop the power meter outside from spinning 😂😂
Install a small solar fence charger up top with a few coils of wire for Bubba
i saved a ton on my deep freeze after i moved and it didn't survive the rip
Doug I knew you did not put the freezer, in the water. Was thinking what he used to get the spat in the water.
Two buckets full of water. : )
Getting better everyday.
I've had good luck with placing plastic owl decoys in areas where birds are not wanted. Have no clue if this will work with your 'guest'.
DC is only safe for below 36 volts and you don't want to get too high on the voltage or it can burn the skin. It used to be 48V, but sweat and small cuts on the skin of your hands lower the resistance of your skin enough that it lowers the resistance enough that the current can penetrate enough to cause burns. For AC, below 36 volts is safe. Anything above that you turn it off or risk stopping your heart and dying.
No wrong .
Ac electric you.
Dc burn you red cells in your body and you have blood posion.
I know i'm car electrische repair .
And i mean electrische cars to 400volt dc .
Time to put some spikes up there on the mast to deter those dam birds.
That cannon would take care of the bird.. Just sayin..
my thought as well. the do something like that on airports sometimes for bird control.
Regarding your mast-top visitor, have you tried a rubber snake? Rotating reflectors made from old hard drive disks also work.
tkzz. for sharing,..,.,.peace
Make sure you clean those solar panels. I discovered the hard way a few years back that a dirty solar panel, even if it’s just on a small percentage of the panel by area can reduce the output significantly
Put some large tie wraps pointing up on that bird perch.
For AC the calculation gets a bit more complicated, for some loads. Because the product of I and U can be negative for a part of the period. Meters can compensate for this effect, but with cheap meters you don't know.
my trick for saving power with freezers water bottles to fill the air space mass keeps the cold need to meter this trick maybe its just a myth?
If you are annoyed by the bird, you can get a small green laser and shine it in to the bird, they are afraid of the light and will fly away, a system like that been developed for commercial use. Could also use some small fireworks or horns mounted there. I think birds will annoy you for a while in general.
Or bird spikes to stop where it roosts
Got one! Buba has not been back but I've had fun playing with the laser anyway. : )
When do you plan on making a passage? Like several days.
Plan to learn to sail her, then make more plans
good vid
Did you add water bottles or something to freeze, when testing?
They need items to cool or freeze, for accuracy.
I tested it after moving everything from the old freezer and giving it 6 hours to settle in.
Isnt the critical part about running compressors off of inverters that you use a "pure sine wave" inverter, not a "modified sine wave" inverter?
Pretty much. The manufacturers say not to use an inverter because someone will try to feed it square waves from a cigarette lighter inverter, and neither refrigerator nor inverter will be happy.
Most of these new fridges/freezers are now inverter controlled compressors and so maybe they are known to have problems when running on a inverter ?
the first day will be less efficient, power-wise, the compressor will run longer than normal. After the fridge comes down to temp, leave a watt meter plugged in for a long while so that it takes average over lots of time. The compressor kicks on and off at different points throughout the day, so the longer you leave it on (days, etd), the better average you'll get.
A propane cannon would work well for the birds. They have cannons that automatically controlled.
my experience with the wat meters is if you leave it unplugged to long or even for no reason the battery or something goes dead in it and it gets tossed in the trash i had 2 would i recommend them yes to lurn what things use will i be buying one no thx maybe someday i should not half to !
Also if you leave it plugged in you notice it heats up so some power is heating it!I
I got one and then got a freezer like you hehe try the corncob bulbs they are grate savers 10 15 wat one is like a 100 wat bulb well almost but better light.
Find a switch with blue tooth. Press one button on your phone to put in on/off. Just saying...... :)
Hi doug, i have a power meter that has the function you are looking for with a built in timer. It is a voltcraft product model no. SEM4500 hope it helps. Greets from the Netherlands 👍 p.s. i just noticed its for 230v.. not sure if that one works in case you are running 110v but they are definately out there
Thanks, as little as I need it, $14 and a clock will work. : )
I bet you were so pleased to see all that bird crap on the roof, since that is your fresh water supply trap.
sail to Boca Chicka and watch for the next rocket launch, or head to NASA to watch the SpaceX rockets, they are launching seems like they are shooting them once every two or three days.
Might do that. I grew up there.
I once had a pigeon problem. I found the best way to deal with them is get a super soaker water gun. They hated it and eventually pissed off somewhere else. Not sure if that will work with Bubba though 😅
I looked into that. Didn't have the range I needed. So we have opted for a laser, but Buba has yet to return. : )
Holy, the average is $0.23/kwh? I am spoiled with my $0.027/kwh. Good info on this @SVSeeker love the analogy you used, always makes it easy for some to understand the electrical terms.
In a small town on the rural east coast, I pay $0.09 as a residential + electric heat customer with a 100 amp service.
Got one of those here, I keep ours out on the porch - they come filled with R-290. Which is basically propane. 💥 be careful.
Ha! I carry a lot more explosive stuff than that on board. : )
@@SVSeeker haha, I believe you.
23 cents! Holy Cripe! We pay less than 7 cents a kWh here in NE Ohio!
Yeah, I think that's the average due to California.
DIN rail power meters are pretty cheap, put a few in different panels, would make your tracking so much easier
Easy way just take circuit breaker off and measure across the circuit breaker
Even the lowly capt has to scrub the deck haha
Id wrap barbed wired around the place he stands or maybe something else would work better
If you're not willing to do all of the work, you're a lousy boss. : )
3:59 Yeah I know...volts and amps and watt not...
Heres another, convert the old one with an adjustable digital controller. Then you can use it as an incredibly efficient fridge,
Somebody might just use that old compressor to make themselfs air compressor tank topper that is silent.
Do you have A/C on the boat?
Ya. Watch the video. 🤷♂️
No. And you don't need it.
Only in the refrigerators.
I learn a lot of shit from these videos. I thought I knew a lot about electronics but damn you have me beat I guess that’s where the age comes in.
Empty Freezers float ones with a body in them well they sink!!!
Yea dont try to use a Freezer as a boat! what did you think I meant!
LOL
It would be nice to have a gas or electric powered pressure washer on the boat. I also wonder how well a pressure washer would clean bottom of boat while under water. I think it would work good as long as you did it before it gets built up to much. Just a suggestion
A pressure washer will work somewhat under water, but only on a very short distance. as water has a way higher viscosity as air, the jet of water will be slowed down considerably more. on a very short distance it will work. Another thing you have to consider, how to keep yourself in place, otherwise the power washer will turn into a jet propulsion system and push you away from whatever you point it at.
@@alexanderkupke920 My friend and I used to ride a power washer wand around our pond when we were kids.

@TOM If you hang around a bunch of old salts you will realize things are typically done a certain way for a reason. For some reason the younger generation thinks were superior because of our use of technology but it doesn't replace experience. Old sailors are possibly the most diverse and knowledgeable group I have ever met and thinking one is going to be more clever leads to an exercise in failure and stupidity.
@@saltysassy958 One more thing about doing things "the old way" if found, not only for such things, but also when it comes for example to hand tools vs. power tools. Power tools are fine if you have larger, or repeated tasks, where the time to set up, possibly make you a jig to get repeatable results etc. is no big deal. But for smaller one off jobs, for example cutting a single piece of a 2x4, having a sqare, a knife (or pencil if it has not to be that precise) and a handsaw gets the job done before you even got a power tool out of storage and set up for the correct size. Unless you may have a fully equipped shop with everything ready to be turned on and used at any moment.
Or for metall, why get out a grinder just to remove a burr, when two or three strokes with a file do the same? Plus the "old way" also works if you do not have power at your disposal. I have to admit though, with the development battery powered tools had over the last years, that might be less of a concern in many situations and in some cases it also considerably cuts down setup time. And for some jobs, I would for example not volunteer to switch a cordless drill for a brace unless I absolutely want to.
Hey if you got a smart plug I'll give you all that detail information.
Made you some bird spikes to keep that bird off.
I would think about the lifespan of that 6A relay on a B15 breaker. Not sure how much the "crane" pulls when in use, but you might weld the contact pretty quick. Your breaker might be too big for the circuit, then its fine..
Also, relays have different ratings for different loads. Say a contactor you can run a 9A motor on, you can probably run 30A if its a heating cable. This is called utilization categories.
Your relay is only rated for DC-1, resistive loads, and 6A, and not DC-3 or DC-13, and might be fine depending on your application. If you only pull 6a of resistive loads, its fine but if you have inductive loads, they will fail on you. And they always fail at the worst times ;)
Example from a similar style relay that is actually rated for inductive loads.
DC1 - 3A (heaters etc)
DC13 - 1A (coils, solenoid valves, contactors)
DC3 - DC motors not rated
AC1 - 5A (heaters)
AC15 - 1.5A (coils, valves)
AC3 - 0.5A (1ph motors)
The reason it is like this, is because its harder to put out the electrical arc when you have a coil of some kind in the system, this will keep energy and voltage on both sides of the relay contact. It is also harder to put out a DC arc, because AC goes to 0V 50-60 times a second, DC doesnt do that. I guess the same principle goes for welding! Sometimes people will put a diode in parallel with the relay contact "the wrong way", to help with the issue of inductive loads like coils. (i think this is a pretty cool solution)
Look at the datasheet of the relay and think if you have any solenoids or motors in the system, then choose the correct relay. Or get a few spares.. :)
I know the utilization categories are a part of the IEC standard, but the basic concept of putting out an arc with a switch applies all over the world. Im sure you americans have some sort of similar table in UL or NEMA. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilization_categories
Relax the crane pulls less than 2 amps. : )
Also, the inductive loads are being switched by the crane, while this relay stays on.

Pick up a fake owl thats sold in gardening depts and mount up on that pole. That might keep everything away and owls will eat an osprey among other birds.
Off the topic question: I think you said you almost built a plane instead of a boat. Can you do a short video of what the plane would have been?
