HUGE problems with the Portal’s new update (what were Sony thinking??)

  • There are HUGE problems with the new Playstation Portal 3.0.0 update. We finally got a way to connect to public WiFi networks with the Portal. But after two days of testing it across a number of different public WiFi spots, I was left bitter and angry. You see, what’s meant to happen is that you connect your Portal to the public network, then it will give you a QR code to scan on your phone. You enter the network credentials on your phone and then your Portal will connect to the public WiFi.
    However, the QR code will ONLY display on the Portal if you are connecting to a 2.4GHz network. Do you know how many public WiFi networks I found that only operated on the 2.4GHz network? That’s right. NONE! They all operate on dual band, which means the Portal gets to choose between 2.4 and 5GHz. The Portal, quite rightly, prefers to connect to the 5GHz option because it’s a faster network. You as a user have no control over that so when your Portal inevitably connects to the 5GHz frequency of the network, you don’t get the QR code which means the Portal can’t authenticate.
    I'm not usually cynical but honestly, Sony MUST have known how utterly pointless and useless this 'solution' is. And yet they announced it like it was going to be a game changer out of the home. At the time of this video’s publication, you’ll only find articles stating how this update will improve connectivity to public WiFi, because those media outlets are only echoing Sony’s press release. The reality though is that it’s made no real world difference at all. All it’s done is convince customers that were unsure about buying one because of the lack of connectivity at hotels etc to purchase one. They’ll be bitterly disappointed, because this update does not do what it says on the tin.
    Having said that, there are a couple of nice changes; the update to the touch screen to behave more like the dual sense controller is nice. And so too is the option to change the default battery symbol into an actual percentage. But I can’t get past the issues with public WiFi. Sony either did no testing at all outside of a controlled environment, or they just don’t care.

    Sorry to hear about your issues. But I’m 430 miles away from my home PS5 and my portal is working F’ing amazing. The new update has been incredible for me. To be fair, I do have excellent wifi in both places. So that could be a factor.

      Oh yes, don't get me wrong. The capability to play remotely is superb on the Portal with good, stable connections at both ends. I play quite a lot remotely with very few problems at all.
      But this update is all about public WiFi improvements. Improvements that don't really exist, at least in a real world setting.

      @@antonioawapara No, but I’m also playing at a house that has Wifi 6; and my home internet is 1000gb up and down wired with my PS5 hooked up by ethernet cable, so maybe that’s why?

      @TheGameFatherUK  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      The micro stutter is understood to be largely due to a mismatch between the refresh rate of the Portal's screen and the output of the PS5, which results in occasional skipped frames. Some people are more susceptible to seeing it than others and it's meant to be more noticeable in certain games than others too. I just can't seem to see it myself (which I'm thankful for to be honest).

    The most surprising thing is that they STILL haven’t added Bluetooth sound support for anything outside their proprietary buds. That HAS to come eventually, right?

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I really don't think that it will, for 2 reasons. The first is that it will really impact on the sale of their earbuds and headphones. But secondly because bluetooth is pretty awful if you don't have a receiving device that's compatible with low latency codecs.
      You can try it for yourself by adding a 3.5mm bluetooth audio transmitter. The lag is very noticeable unless your headphones are compatible with the APTx bluetooth codec, which not many are.

      Thank you! It's such a shame because this really would have been an excellent update if it wasn't for the issue with 5GHz. I'd do the same in your shoes. Although, if you have a modern Android phone like one of the Google Pixels, you can connect to a public WiFi connection on the phone and share the connection to the Portal. It's still not ideal, but it does work :)

      Absolutely, I wish I had made it clearer in the video that I absolutely love the Portal. It's been one of the best purchases I've made in ages. I used it more or less every day at home and away from home and you're spot on; as a parent, it's amazing. But I really am disappointed in Sony with the update to public WiFi. They must have known it would be terrible in a real world setting, but they marketed the update like it was suddenly going to fix all that when it doesn't.

      Exactly what I’m doing, it’s been a godsend for that. I put her to bed on my lap, and pop on the Portal while she settles, move her to her crib, and sit in the rocking chair playing until the next bottle. I have had some back and forth connection issues, but it stubbornly tries to connect to the AP downstairs instead of the one a room over, so it seems to have more to do with that.

    • @TheGameFatherUK

      I think that will depend on the network you're connecting to and how long that network remembers devices that have previously connected to it. Your home network only has to remember a small number of MAC ID's so that's why it always works.

      Hey there. Getting the Portal to work on known networks away from home like at a friends house or via mobile data can be a little tricky but not usually impossible (usually). You'll need to check that your home internet connection isn't using something called CGNAT which more and more ISP's are now adapting (for good reasons, they aren't just being bastards). You can check that with them directly.
      If your connection at home isn't using CGNAT, then it'll just be a matter of configuring your network to allow the connection to your PS5 from an external source. I actually made a guide on how to do this just before the Portal was released, it should help :)

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yep. But they won't because they're worried about it being hacked. Which it already has been, without the need for one. It's so stupid, because the Portal has almost no processing power, memory or storage. Even if it was hacked, it'd be so restrictive. We need a browser, 100%.
      @CandyChannel1966 - That's correct, but you're viewing the browser that's working on the PS5 console, rather than the Portal. So it won't work in the way you think it as the connection to the PS5 would already need to be established.

    If the portal prefers 5Ghz connections over 2.4Ghz ones (even though this will prevent it from working when a landing/login page is not offered), but will accept 2.4Ghz over 5Ghz if the latter has a weaker signal, than you could move further away from the router/access point since 5Ghz has faster speeds in a narrower operational range, whilst the 2.4Ghz connection is the opposite, and trick the portal to "prefer" 2.4Ghz that way.
    However, going to such lenghts is just insanity.

      It is insanity but I did actually try that at Sainsbury's. Even then, I couldn't get it to reliably stay connected for long enough for the QR code to work etc before either the signal bottomed out or it jumped back to 5GHz :/

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The Portal does need very stable WiFi in order to stream at 1080 without any lag. Network speed and stability are different things so it might seem as though the WiFi coverage is great in the other room but it might actually not be that stable. If you're interested, I do have a video guide just for home WiFi optimisation that might help:

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Portal needs good, stable WiFi in order to work well. But when it has that, it's pretty flawless (micro stutter aside). It'd almost certainly benefit from WiFi6 support but then again it's got very little in the way of processing power and memory. I can't imagine it's a background service taking away speed, but I would love to know why Sony restricted 5GHz from authenticating public WiFi connections.

    I have had my portal for a couple weeks now, it plays decently but I get some network stutter (not sure if that is what its called but its what im calling it) when the screen goes fuzzy and unplayable for a couple seconds, sometimes the low network icon shows in the upper right corner, but again its only for a couple seconds. I have also had issues where i am randomly disconected from my ps5 while in the middle of a game but quickly gets reconnected.

      Yeah that's definitely a network performance issue. I've experienced it multiple times when I've been in spots away from home or using mobile data. The Portal doesn't actually demand very much in terms of speed as it's only streaming at 1080p. BUT, it does require a lot in the way of stability, which is why you're getting those odd seconds of poor performance.
      There's a few things you can do to try and resolve that if it's bothering you. I made a home WiFi optimisation guide that might help. You can find it here: th-cam.com/video/atbJenpS3Mc/w-d-xo.html

      Have you set a static IP on your console?
      Have you enabled port forwarding on your router at home?
      Does your home internet service provider use something called CGNAT?
      If you're not sure on those things, I have a fairly in depth video covering the first 2. The CGNAT question you'll need to ask your internet provider as that is extremely difficult to get around. Link to the video: th-cam.com/video/hdS84_8r16w/w-d-xo.html

  • @warwombat_
    @warwombat_ 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I’ve been configuring public networks for the past 10+ years.
    The 5gHz issues because of channeling sounds like a bug or flaw in the code and not a channel in multiple countries issues. That bug or issue is likely a transmit frequency issue due to them trying to squeeze performance out of the WiFi connection.
    On a home network the portal typically using a password to 1 device so so transmit frequency isn’t an issue.
    On a public network or any network with a portal page it has more steps. 2.4gHz is obviously slower with slower transmit rates due to this. On the 5gHz side it’s operates much faster. So when the portal sends a request to join and by the time it receives a response it’s already sent another request dropping/ignoring that response original request. It then eventually gets ignored or denied by the controller causing it to fail to connect.

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The reason I don't believe it to be a bug is because they stipulated the restriction before the update was even released and referenced geographical reasons for it. It's definitely been done purposefully, but it leaves the Portal essentially crippled when it comes to public WiFi due to its lack of web browser.

    Tbh this was a useless update from Sony anyways… the portal was never really supposed to be used away from home in a public setting… if your visiting family or a friend that has stable internet connection that is one thing… but the portals main purpose is a very specific user base… people that don’t want to commit booting up the ps5 in a office or basement, for people wanting to lay in bed, sit on the couch while kids are watching tv, people that prefer a dedicated device vs using your phone to remote play games, people that prefer a dual sense controller while playing ps5 rather than a backbone

      I kind of agree with you, it is undoubtably better at home. But it is definitely meant to be used away from home and Sony have marketed it as such. It's built on fairly old tech that's been used that way for many years. But that tech, when used on a phone, PC, laptop, tablet or whatever, will work just fine connecting to a public network because they all have built in web browsers. This update is utterly pointless in that regard, just give us a browser or enable 5GHz networks for authenticating on a landing page 🙏

      I use mine pretty much daily and it's been mega. At home it's pretty much perfect and even away from home it's great as long as the network is stable. Bruh connect your portal to your hotspot and keep it moving.
    All tbis configuration stuff might be the reason why your PS portal is confused.
    Just leave your phone on 2.4ghz and ps5 on automatic and you should be fine.

      I think you may have missed the point of the video a bit there my friend. I was only testing the features of the update, which include 'improvements' to public WiFi. The portal continues to work just fine on mobile data, as it always has.

    Why are ppl trying their hardest making this a full blown portable??? You consumers are the problem. The portal is primarily made for your house. Yes you can connect outside your home but it's not specifically made for that. It's ultimately made where your ps5 is located. You people are ridiculously weird smh.

    • @TheGameFatherUK
      @TheGameFatherUK  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sorry, but I disagree. It's built on tech that's quite old now. Remote play has been working just fine on phones, laptops, PC's and tablets for many years both at home and away from home. The Portal is no different in that regard. It's just a device that uses networks to connect to your PS5, whether that's locally or via a WAN.
      The problem with this update is that it doesn't actually do what Sony claims and that's bullshit in my eyes. I love the Portal, best thing I've bought in years. However, many people (especially folk that travel a lot) decided against buying one at release because of the lack of public WiFi support due to having no web browser. So when Sony announce that now it'll work those people have gone out and bought one, only to be disappointed (understandably so) when they realise it still doesn't work at all.
