Yeah that was a classic, I couldn't help laughing. Honestly Tanya is the IDGAF protag, she didn't want to do half the shit she was forced to do. I believe she wanted to be in the back lines collecting a paycheck but God/Being X was trolling her and since she was something of a prodigy she couldn't really avoid battle no matter how much she tried to sabotage God's plans for her.

12:20 Tanya used a higher pitched voice than normal specifically to ensure that the enemies wouldn’t take her warning seriously. Because she didn’t want them escaping or fighting back. She wanted maximum casualties. But she’s bound by international law to warn them before launching the attack, so she purposely “sabotaged” the warning to ensure they would all die.
The warning wasn't sabotaged, it was a proper warning that was given the people working in a military facility to evacuate. The only structure that was attacked was the ammunitions factory, which meant that casualties were minimized to only those that were directly involved in military production.

She always tries to *maximize* casualties for the same reason she had no qualms with attacking civilians that were close to enemy mages. Because survivors present a potential future threat. She purposely made her warning as non-threatening as possible so she could ensure there were no survivors. This is someone who wrote an entire report about how to utilize loopholes in international wartime law to achieve total victory. If you think she wanted to minimize casualties in this scene then you have *seriously* misunderstood this character.

Tanya doesn't kill for killings sake or because she's immoral/evil, but because it will bring the Empire closest to victory in the most efficient manner. The amount casualties are not the main concern, but the effectiveness of getting those people killed are the primary goal of her actions. The laws of war are clear, and Tanya (unlike the other "good" characters in the series) never deviates from the written law to achieve victory for the Empire. Also, one important thing to note in the battle over Arene is that there were no civilians present in the city. A formal evacuation notice was given in order for all civilians to be released before the arrival of the 203rd and Artillery, anyone that remained are considered unlawful combatants. As for the situation in the Dakian capital, the only complex attacked was the ammunition factory. If what you said was true, she would have wiped out the entire capital because some of the Dakians may revolt against the empire in the future. The lesson that Tanya was trying to get to Grantz was not that he should "kill the civilians because they can one day become enemy soldiers" but to perform his duty because "the target that you're given ARE the enemy".
TLDR; Up till now Tanya has only ever killed or ordered to have killed enemy combatants, nothing more nothing less.

Her *one* and *only* goal is to survive, and she kills all threats to do so. She literally said this when she was ordered to kill the mages near the civilians. She was going to kill the civilians with the mages to eliminate a threat. She doesn’t care about the Empire, she only cares about surviving, and surviving just happens to require achieving victory for the Empire, and sometimes involves killing civilians. And I never said she killed any civilians in the capital, I merely said she was maximizing casualties. Meaning she was ensuring every last person *in that facility* dies. No survivors. That is why she *purposely* made her voice higher pitched than it normally is. Even her soldiers recognized this.

I think that in forming an argument it is important to be able to differentiate between a statement and a quote. It is precisely to ensure her survival, that she is doing her utmost to help the Empire that she is currently in employment of to win the war in the most effective and convincing manner. Not only have you missed crucial characteristics of the persona in question, but you are unable to grasp the simple train of thought presented in my previous statement. I was saying that if your statement/argument was true, she WOULD have attack the Dakian capital's civilians to maximize casualties of potential enemies of the empire. The fact that she didn't, proves that your statement is false and casualties are left at the minimum of only direct military contributors. Also note that she did not shoot any civilians that were protected by mages, she ordered to shooting of unlawful combatants that were close to enemy mages. That is an important distinction that I see many commenters get wrong.
Tanya is one of the most evilest and funniest villains there is.
A bit more info about the citizen bombardment, Since its a war crime to kill citizens, tanya instead made an announcement to surrender. Since the citizens denied and then said "We will fight to the last man" while killing off the only hostages they have (aka the imperial soldiers). They were now in the laws eyes known as a specific type of combatants giving the army the right to kill without any repercussion, and since they arent real soldiers they dont need to get some for prisoners either. The bombing was deliberately calculated that it starts a firestorm burning everything to a crisp pretty much. The other soldiers from the other country had to use magic to protect themselves and the people from the heat or else they would burn alive in seconds. (The manga and novel picture it in a better way than the anime, but I get why that is)

Technically those weren’t war crimes(if you watch the entire show). She exploited loopholes like crazy, but no crimes. Also the two guys she sent to their deaths were guilty of treason in combat that she personally witnessed. In a field court marshal she could have sentenced them to death legally. All of her killing was as a soldier against countries that attacked first. She was defending her country- in the most brutal efficient way possible.
I should add that I don’t approve of her killing. I just think it’s technically not criminal

The international laws prohibited the urban warfare with civilians involved, so Tanya created a completely acceptable excuse beforehand: how to circumvent the laws in order to kill everyone in the city without violating international laws. Then she presented it to the military, so they implemented it and sent her to do it. The trick is about to inform all the military in the city to evacuate the citizens, and if they fail to do it this would be their responsibility to wage war while the civilians are still in the city and formally Tanya can kill them all assuming everyone left is the military. And after killing their captured soldier they used it as a pretext to free their own soldiers while attacking the city.

It wasn’t actually Tanya shooting the shells during the training. It was the artillery unit. She arranged for them to have target practice shooting at her men.

The series is titled The Saga Of Tanya The Evil.
The only thing Tanya firmly believes in is order. You can't follow that order, you're fodder. The award Tanya received is an award that no one alive has received. Those two soldiers wanted to die heroes. Tanya ensured they died pathetically.
Tanya didn't want the battalion, but she knows to follow orders from the top brass. So she tries torturing her troops, trying to make them quit.
What CJ doesn't mention is that Tanya's enemy is God, whom she calls Being X. She was placed into this war-torn difficult world to make her a believer. To make her have faith in God. All it's done is made her a very bitter and angry person. Tanya has gone through so much. There are 12 light novels in total over here, and animated wise, we've only gotten one season and a movie. We were promised season 2, but that was over three years ago, so this series DEFINITELY got put on the backburner. =(

It's worth a watch.
God is the one entirely at fault for everything Tanya does. Isekai with magic powers for refusing to worship .magic powers ensure drafting. WW1 was about to start. God wanted anya to be desperate,and bend the knee,and threatened with permadeath of the soul should she die in a violent manner.
So since a draft into what she knew was shaping up to be WW1 was unavoidable,she volunteered. Got a head start of years. Did a good job,getting injured in a natural way in her first battle to get recognition. Hoping for an officer job in the back lines.
Something they don't mention in the anime is that they use magic to stimulate adrenaline and other hormones. That's the main reason she has the homicidal smile in battle. It's a 7-10 year old body pumped full of fight juice .
When training her squad,she was setting unrealistic standards and tough training on purpose. She wanted them to quit. If a decent number quit,she might get an extension on the month she has to train them,which means more time out of the front lines. The avalanche was caused by one of them screaming curses at her,VERY LOUD, in snowy mountains. That's the same guy she kicked the shit out of. She did it to get the snow out of his lungs.
But god is a cheater. He put paperwork in the right place for candidates. He had her file "happen" to be the one to come up when testing an unstable weapon. He gave a dream to a scientist to make it better. He rigged it to never work and only explode if doesnt Tanya pray. Any time she prays,he brainwashes her little by little.as far as we know,she wears a rosary against her will because of the brainwashing.since she's the only one to be able to use it,she's always on the front lines.

I just want to look at this as objectively as possible, okay? Also, Spoilers, duh.
Tanya in her previous life was an ardent athiest and was confronted by God, not wanting to admit God existed, she, or he? Whatever, they said you aren't god, instead, I'll call you being X, as any God that should exist should be as described within holy texts and you seem nothing like that. Anyway, he angers God and is reincarnated as Tanya after being told that his life in this new world will be filled with warfare and misery.
Tanya then joins the military at, if I remember correctly, 6. Might've been 8, I don't fully remember. After the first year, she became a drill sergeant. The scene referenced was after a trainee disobeyed her, and she was acting in accordance to wartime law, that is to say, those that disobey direct orders are to be executed (Also why the two that destroyed the artillery are almost executed on the spot).
Now, her first mission, the recon mission. She had been sent to watch the borders, it was supposed to be an uneventful mission, but then she spotted soldiers crossing the border, which is why she calls the artillery and subsequently watches them to call out coordinates and aim changes. She then deals with the aggressors as necessary. Also, when she laughs and smiles, it's because she's high as fuck on magic.
Now for that training. Most of the time, training would take at least six months, so she had to make it faster, especially since this was supposed to be an elite, fast acting unit, so she made it super fucking brutal. When she kicked that dude, it was to get snow out of his lungs, btw.
Now, the rebels... Before the ambush/invasion, they sent warnings saying that all individuals within city limits after the given timeframe would be considered combatants/soldiers, so they were all well aware of the consequences of their actions, the killing of an imperial soldier was just the icing on the cake for it not to be a warcrime. Furthermore, the evacuation is almost in a grayzone, but would likely be a warcrime.
Now, for the Sioux's. They were enemy soldiers and Tanya dealt with them accordingly. This includes Mary Sioux. Ultimately, it's war, and people die in war.
Anyway, looking at it objectively, there was one time where I would really say she was evil, and that was under pressure and direct orders from higher-ups. In the end, she's just a brutally effective soldier and strategist that was forced into positions where she had to be brutal and unbiased in how she did things, meaning she had to resort to domestic and international wartime law to ensure the best outcome.

TL;DR. Tanya isn't as evil as the vid makes her out to be, that said, she is incredibly brutal and does what she has to in order to ensure the survival of her and her troops.
