      To kind of spoil things and draw an analogy from chess, she's a pawn that worked her way into becoming a queen. Her only motivation is to get out of frontlines by advancing her position in the military. But she becomes so good at it fighting that she becomes an indispensable asset, which screws her over in the long run.
      The things she did are probably war crimes long after the fact. Also no one to considers it so because the Germany of the isekai world is surrounded on all fronts. They need every border covered asap, or else they get lynched.
      The guy that gets isekai'd into becoming Tanya is a full on rational thinker, morals be damned. A well oiled machine in the flesh, to the point she's a roaring locomotive with a face of a demented child driven insane by the knowledge of knowing god is tormenting her to turn to religion as a source of power.
      In the manga they introduce various patheons of gods that discuss ways of making humans pray to them again and use Tanya as an unwilling mouthpiece. Only when some enemy nations start paying attention to the things she says as she's casting spells do they get the inkling that to go against her requires a *miracle*. Yeah the 'power of god' parts of the exhibits aren't too far off. Tanya is introducing a power ceiling in that world that requires people to pray and dedicate themselves to reaching Tanya's level.

    Exhibit D (It happens in the middle of exhibit C): while stationed in the desert, the food given to Tanya's battalion was trash, just pasta that they can't even cook because you know, it's the DESERT so there is no water around to "waste". What was Tanya's solution? Attack enemy bases just for the ingredients and water to cook.
    Enemy soldier: "WHY? This base holds no strategic value whatsoever, why are we getting shelled?"
    Tanya: "Run your pockets n****, I know you got basil!"

    Bear in mind Chavez that CJ cut out A LOT of context and levity for the sake of entertainment. The Anime, manga and light Novels show that Tanya isn’t as evil as she’s portrayed here. She’s a savage but so are all those she’s engaged in battle with.
    *SPOILERS BELOW FOR THE PROLOGUE
    In the actually story, Tanya in her previous life encounters god moments before being killed by the train. God basically asks why dude don’t believe in God, which the guy flat out denies gods existence to his face and says he has no need for faith in the modern world blessed with technology and modern conveniences. So God says, “alright, If I reincarnate you in a world without technology, you’ll have faith?”
    So God reincarnates the dude into Tanya. The entire Anime is Tanya trying to get revenge on this God for doing this to her and throughout the entire story thus far, God or Being X keeps interfering with her life, putting her life in danger multiple times before reaching 12. Gods even manipulated events around Tanya to force a World War situation in order to put her in active danger.

    Some explanations. Tanya is a master of loopholes when it comes to not technically committing war crimes. Her motivation is to try and get a safe and cushy job, but life keeps getting in the way. Mary Sioux came back and the final battle between them took an entire movie.
    Another thing to mention about Tanya is that she isn't as outright cruel in the original source material as she is in the anime. The two soldiers weren't deliberately sent to their deaths for instance. The reason she was so savage to her battalion during training was because she was trying to discourage them into quitting, so that she wouldn't get sent to the front. Over time, the soldiers who follow her orders end up becoming "her men" and she grows to feel loyalty to them.

    • @TheCsel
      @TheCsel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +145

      Yeah, shes tries to sabotage herself but it backfires and she keeps getting promoted. And she tries to get her men to quit, but she ends up turning them into elite soldiers devoted to her.

    • @jongrho602
      @jongrho602 2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      @@emircanozad914 It wasn't Tanya who sent them to the pillbox. She just reassigned them to the back and it was the Empire's military admin that sent them there. However the whole point of this story is that in Tanya's previous life in Japan, (s)he was someone without any empathy which continued in her new life. And the real villain is god (who Tanya calls "Being X" as she does not believe in god) who doesn't like the fact that modern humans lack any faith in him, so he sends her/him to this different world which is at war and where women are treated as they were in our world 100 years ago. But he gives Tanya a massive amount of mana which will mean that Tanya will be made a soldier despite being a little girl. But for Tanya to utilize that massive mana in order to survive, she has to verbally praise him which will make the people around Tanya to become believers. In other words, "god" is using war, death, and suffering to make converts. Not exactly as how modern religions portray "god" but true to history.

    • @TheCsel
      @TheCsel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      @@emircanozad914 The idea was that soldiers that can't obey orders are going to get themselves or others killed in their wreckless stupidity. Tanya was going to send them off the frontlines as punishment but they basically said they'd rather die than go home. So she put them in a post where they'd probably die and not get anyone else killed. Ruthless and leaning towards psychotic, but overall she gave them the warning and couldnt have them doing stupid stuff in a war. The anime also has this in episode 1 and it is playing up the psycho nature of Tanya to hook viewers, before adding any complexity to her character.

    • @noneofyourbusiness3288
      @noneofyourbusiness3288 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yep. She is never cruel for no reason. She is cruel. But she has a reason. The best example is her training camp, she was so cruel to the recruits trying to get them to quit, so she could delay the deployment to the front. It backfired and they were all too scared to quit, but you know... that was her plan at least.

    You guys would really enjoy this anime. Tanya isn't a good person, but she actually doesn't want to be on the battlefield AT ALL. The leaders of her country just keep sending her there because she's literally the best strategist they have and is also the most skilled. Tanya's only goal is to remove herself from danger and not get killed at all so that she can be reincarnated again. She goes through a lot of loopholes that any other military goes through when it comes to war crimes, and the other side is shown as well. You also have to realize she has to obey orders or she'll be charged for going against orders. Her main enemy is legit God who gives her and Mary their crazy powers.

    The context is: if WW1 happened a couple decades late, and theres magic and magic-tech. So its not about WW2 race- NAZI stuff, more about the imperial struggles of WW1 and pointless grind of war with no end in sight. Tanya knows the conflict is spiraling into a global confict and is trying to stop it, but the Higher Ups and the "god" character is actively pushing the world to war. So she's stuck in constant war and becomes more and more unhinged because of it. So, I think it shows the WW1 historical aspects quite well. Its not my favorite anime, but is a lot more nuanced then this video made it out to be.

We can go in deep about the anime, the characters, motivations, and all of it but was that what CJ was talking about? I ask because it seems that Chavez, his wife, and everyone else got confused about what the video was about. Asking if we are supposed to be rooting for Tanya or not? If they meant, should we be rooting for her to join the table or not fine, but it sounded as if they were asking if we should root for her as a character doing what she does. Which is not what CJ is talking about. The Character is evil, CJ says it many times, but is she evil enough to part of the table, that is the question.

    Having read the manga I can tell you it's less about being an historical retelling as much as being a war/tactics fantasy manga when it comes to its main point it is not lazy. I think it's unfair to compare this and attack on titian since they are two completely different beast. Also there are very few mangas like this one and it is very good. I don't know about the anime.(from what I heard the anime is fun and give more context but still butchers the manga a Bit.)
    Tanya is a protagonist not a hero, but wouldn't call her the villain , her main thing is to win the war and she finds alot of loopholes to do so.
    I do get your point tho and i can see why someone like you wouldn't watch it. I also am a big history buff and with chavezz saying it I could see how it could be dangerous. personally I don't take manga/anime that seriously, but I can see how someone else might see it like that.

      Its the casual nonviewers and videos like this that are dangerous, they take the entire point of the show out of context. People call Tanya a Nazi-Loli, when its related to Imperial Germany and WW1 not NAZI Germany of WW2. The title also calls her Evil as clickbait, and makes her seem especially psycho in episode 1 to hook new viewers. When in fact the Japanese title has nothing to do with being evil, and shes actually the one trying to keep the war from escalating and turning into a global conflict.

      I read some of the novels and I have to say: it is nice when you clearly see that the author knows some stuff about military history. The stuff in Youyo Senki makes actually sense. Their technology, tactics, doctrine, and how it develops over the course of the war... checks out. Too often people write about stuff without having even a basic understanding of the historical, sociological, or scientific context of what they are writing about (which is how you get fantasy movies with paper-armor, dab colored peasants, idiotic tactics and weird mishmash of technology that does not make sense in context). Youjo Senki does it quite well. Another example of an author being quite good in this regard is "Cast under an Alien Sun" by Olan Thorensen (kind of a western isekai novel).

    She's not exactly as evil as the video portrayed her to be. Most people assume when a character is evil, that they are the *Chaotic Evil* archetype, one that revels in other's suffering and perpetuates evil for the sake of evil. She's not that type of evil. (the Joker is an example of chaotic evil)
    Her evil is more *Lawful Evil,* she acts very efficiently and does things that benefits her no matter the cost but she doesn't actively harms others just for the fun of it or just for doing it for no reason.
    If it benefits herself, her career and her image, she doesn't mind basically torturing her soldiers to make them into the supersoldiers that she wants them to be.
    Another thing is that she *technically didn't commit a single war crime yet,* she used *loopholes* in the rules of war of her current time period to finish her missions efficiently. What she did is by their rules of war not illegal, but definitely still morally wrong. And she knows that yet still does it because she benefits from doing it by allowing her to lessen the risks to her own soldiers, finish the conflict faster, and most importantly, to get another achievement that will help her military career.
    TLDR; She's evil but not for the sake of just being evil but for the sake of herself.
    She hasn't committed a war crime at all by their world's rules of war because she used loopholes on it.

      @@rioulethebeats9717 It isn't. Killing routing enemies been the bread&butter of military actions in history. Attacking an opposing force which is in retreat isn't always wise, though. Both for practical and political reasons. That being said shooting down bombers which moments ago were about to kill a lot of your own men is entirely justified. Unless they surrender, land in an enemy airfield and allow themselves to be in custody they remain legit military targets. What do you think would happen if said bombers get to return? They will attack your own forces again, of course! Chasing an enemy that tries to escape is the bare minimum that should be done in most situations.
      What is the difference between surrender and retreat? Everything. Retreating means you remove the unit from the combat zone. It doesn't mean said units cease to be a threat. They just won't fight in that particular moment. Surrender means you submit to the other force and become a prisoner of war. When in the process of surrender it is indeed a war crime to continue the aggression. That being said if the surrendering soldiers try to fight back or escape then the soldiers are authorized to use force, even deadly. And of course the side which tries to "feign surrender" would be committing a war crime in this situation. So as you notice the very concept of retreat is opposed to surrender. 13:40 so Tanya is like another level of loopholes for war crimes to the point where she was known for it. I think the title of the anime is literally Tanya the Terrible. This is actually a good example, when she attacked this capital she specifically wanted to be the one to announce the attack beforehand because she has the voice of a child thus everyone thought it was some kid having fun on the intercoms. Afterwards they attacked and when questioned she could just say “Hey I tried to warn them beforehand.”

Which is why Tanya wasn't taking chances and said "clap them start up revenge machines before they get the chance" absolutely brutal thought process and actions but can't fault that logic after looking at said inspiration's final act being The Ultimate Revenge.

  • @jBaO493
    @jBaO493 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    The thing is that CJ made her look like an actual psycho in his vid when in reality she's more of a sociopath;
    She doesn't actually enjoy killing or making others suffer, she just does her job in the most efficient way possible and, when she can, she will go above and beyond to make sure that her country wins the war so that the war ends. All she does is in order to end the war as she sees war as a mindless and unproductive flaw of humanity and an obstacle to her true objective: to work behind a desk just like she did before getting isekaied.
    But since she's a sociopath, she doesn't mind all the murdering and "war crimes" she comits (she doesn't actually comit any war crimes since she always finds a loophole or new way to bend the rules so that it justifies her actions as legal in times of war), this makes her an invaluable asset to her superiors, who always enthrust her with difficult missions, usually beyond the front lines as a type of special hit squad (that's why she could go into that one country's capital and blow tf out of it [well not actually the capital, but more of a guns factory if i remember correctly])
    So yeah, she's evil.
    As lawful evil as you can get.

In her new life she does bend the rules more ONLY because she wants the war to end as quick as possible without becoming a world war and live a quiet life. But I definitely don't agree with some of the stuff she do no matter what/why. The main villain in this anime is Being X(a.k.a God). Who only reincarnated him/her to force him to believe in God. It's not World War II, as CJ mentioned trenches.
    Trenches were an extremely dated tactic by the start of WWII because warfare at this point changed so much that modern warfare tactics was built upon WWII.
    WWI is fundamentally known for trench warfare - a _defensive_ tactic used to provide cover from enemy fire and hindered troops from advancing (which is in part why WWI dragged on for as long as it did).
    Edit: Trench warfare is most definitely one of the most identifying differences between WWI and WWII from a regular person's perspective aside from the names of the opposing sides (WWI has the Central Powers versus Allied Powers, WWII has the Axis Powers and the Allies).

    The Saga of Tanya the Evil is much more a character study and a "villain vs villain" story than a typical "good vs evil" story. The characters are all framed behind a morally gray background (or in Tanya's case a "morally dark gray background"), because every character in this story is the victim of manipulationm by something greater, while also knowingly making choices that are definetley not morally good. Its not like some all knowing evil puppet master is behind everything (although at points that is also somewhat present), but rather many moving parts pulling all the strings into all directions at once... for example, the propaganda of a fascist leadership, the divine influence of a self-proclaimed god, the boiling emotions of war and its trauma, or the orders of a superior officer, just to name a few of these forces.
    The Saga of the Tanya the Evil is a well accomplished narrative if you ask me, but definetley not a story that everyone can enjoy, as the main character is Tanya who unlike the title of the show or this video may suggest, is not as directly "evil" as it may seem, but she still does her fair share of very reprehensible shit (which is like, totally fair if you dont wanna watch that). The show definetley never frames Tanya as "good" though, her morality and her intentions are constantly questioned by all the people around her, but like said...she is more of a "moral dark gray" character, which kinda makes her perfect for the role of main character for the type of story that this show is actually about. Although like said, definetley not for everyone... and if you just wanna see some villain get absolutley destroyed then this show will definetley not be for you, since it just is not about that at all.

    it should also be said that their chances of surviving if they dug a deep foxhole would be increased to 80%, 90% if they dug an "L" channel that hides the entrance from where the soldier is cooped up in, but in their case that 80% is more than enough since they also have magical shields that can tank 1 or 2 of those artillery shells every so often, given enough time to regenerate their shields can keep them safe from artillery for all 36 hours. that wont get rid of shell shock though, the only cure for that is to grow a pair.
    it should also be said that tanya did absolutely *no warcrimes,* she skirted across the very legal edge of the rules of war as far as 1914 is concerned (before the geneva convention), for example she is required to announce an attack against a city or country as an act of war before making that attack, undeclared acts of war is considered a warcrime, which is why she announced her bombardment of the capital city before attacking, but she did so in a very cute childish voice to make sure she didn't convince anyone that she was serious so she can inflict maximum casualties, its easy to replace a factory but hard to replace skilled labor after all (oh yeah forgot to mention, she bombarded a military target - an ammunition factory, perfectly legal). shes also well within her right to nuke that log cabin which was harboring a hidden enemy command center in sovereign territory, considered as high treason.
    she was also well within her right to retaliate against insurgents that shot at her troops, before demanding them to surrender for being clearly outmatched (also a legal requirement), she then used video evidence of the resistance movement killing an unarmed allied soldier as an excuse to reclassify them from a resistance movement into a terrorist movement, granting her the legal ability to order an indiscriminate artillery barrage across the whole town. since they were classified as terrorists, killing actual civilians also became legal since they could be treated as traitors for aiding the enemy. the entire town was legally deemed as an enemy of the state.
    it should also be said that during this time period if you were branded as a traitor and enemy of the state, by royal decree all of your relatives across 3 generations and their 1st born children are to be executed as co-conspirators to a traitor. this anime happened in ww1 when germany still had a king known as the "Kaiser", so this very specific royal decree could be used to eliminate all of the civilians in that entire town with absolutely no legal repercussions.
    nuking that red city (you know which one, i cant say it because yt censorship) later on is kind of in the grey zone, as far as 1914 rules of war are concerned its perfectly legal, but as far as the geneva convention is concerned its not. but believe it or not planting your flag in someone elses country and singing your national anthem back then was perfectly legal, if not horribly unethical and extremely disrespectful.
    i should also add this at the end, in this timeline the allied powers are the bad guys, the axis powers are the good guys believe it or not. roles reversed in this isekai world.
    also personally speaking, i would disagree with you in thinking that an anime where the MC is the antagonist is boring, because it absolutely isn't, i've watched thousands and mean fudging thousands of anime in my life and im sick and tired of watching anime about the boring shallow arse no personality protagonist of literally every shounen anime on earth winning because of plot armor or some other bs, ive dealt with 20+ years of that bull****** in my life and its so boring that it made me wanna quit being an otaku several times, then some amazing anime like Overlord, Tokyo Ghoul, Deathnote, Guilty Crown, Rising of the Shield Hero, Redo of a Healer, Vinland Saga, Hellsing Ultimate, Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan), Youjo Senki (Tanya the Evil) came out that turned the table completely around, allowing us to see the antagonists side of the story and see them winning for a change, it was such a huge breath of fresh air for someone like me who's watched far more anime than anyone else i know including you. there is a reason *Overlord* is having its *4TH SEASON* right now, its because protagonist anime suck.

    Tanya is by far the most anti of anti-heroes in all isekai series'! xD I mean, this particular example has warped a moderate amount of context but still hit like 80% of that nail on the head! Probably the best part about anti-hero isekai is how they generally just do not give a f*ck and STILL end up saving the world however the hell they so choose to do it. It's like they start off with half points spent in Renegade, and only gradually towards the end of the season start spending TPs in Paragon (that's right, I used a Mass Effect reference here xD) only AFTER maxing out that entire red bar.

    i think the fact that she has a unique talent for magic is important, but still, very good characterization.

    for the record, it may look like tanya effortlessly did all those things because of how cj said it but trust me it isn't a power fantasy, the first book in the light novel series put a warning at the end that basically said "if you like stories where the main character always wins and stories filled with hope, I advise you stop reading this series"
    she doesn't just deal with physical struggles in terms of fights but also corrupt milatary practices and, oh yeah forgot to mention, god is actively sabatoging her, yes THE god the one from the literal bible (according to him)
    and regardless of what it might seem there is always at least some justification in what tanya does like with the artilery strike on that city, the reason that happened was because the opposing military was trying to basically hide behind their civillians to guilt trip the enemy so that they could just easily wipe them out and it wasn't tanya's decision to do the artilery strike it was what the higher ups intended to happen before the battle even happened

      For some context she didn't "use her kid voice" that's she just used her normal voice. They even make a point of having her soldiers laugh about it saying what you did and she gets pissed remarking that's just how she sounds

    From what I remember, the title the saga of Tanya the evil is a mistranslation from the original japanese title Joyo senki, the militairy chronicles of a little girl. And she really is just that in that world. A little girl, stuck facing opression, having to pray to a god she doesn't believe in just to attempt to survive.
    Every move she makes is to grow up safely and die of old age. So because her country is at war and she has the mean to make herself not part of a subjugated country, she will help out. The military people also get a better pension and better benefits. So for a war orphan that's about the only way to get anything to her name.
    She uses magic to drug herself up during combat, mostly because she's terrified of the things she sees and gets into. So any ruthless decissions are just her going. I need to snuff out this fire to avoid getting backstabbed. Honestly Tanya often is portrayed as either really calm and cold or the opposite pretty deranged. But most of that stems from her trying to keep her anxiety in check based on what she knows of her previous life and the fact she's never seen war before.
    Add in that she also has to deal with the harassment of being X, who is practically always gloating and controlling everything around her to the point that he even tells her. She can only access her greater abilities by praying to him, but for each prayer she will lose a piece of her old identity. Eventually she'll be forced to believe in him. And that's another aspect that I can see being terrifying as well. Nobody wants to lose their sense of self after all.
    And while she tries to avoid getting into situations where she has to use those bigger spells, if she avoids the situation, being X will make a situation where she has to use it. Hence Mary.

    Shoulda seen her in the spin off, Isekai quartet with her, Ainz ool Gown (overlord), Subaru (re zero), and Kazuma (Kono suba) all getting reisekai'd into another world and forced to go to school together.
