You hit the nail right on the head with the comparison to Springsteen! True story: I was in the U.S. Navy back in the mid-80's and we spent 10 days or so in Perth Western Australia. My buddy and I rented a car and cutting to the chase - we wound up in a record store. Our 'accents' (lol) gave us away as 'Yanks' and were soon chatting it up with lots of folks that were there at the time. We asked what band or artist album(s) we should get that are well known in Australia / an Australian talent. The store manager literally said what you did - "... so you guys know of your Bruce Springsteen yes?" We were like - "Yeah... " "You should check out this guy then, Jimmy Barnes and perhaps some of his older stuff from his previous band Cold Chisel - he's kind of like our version of Springsteen." We each purchased a couple of albums - I grabbed a Barnsey and a Chisel album. Been a fan ever since.

Mate, between this and Stone Cold you’re getting a good taste of classic Jimmy Barnes across his many decades. But as I said before, you now got to check out his band Cold Chisel. Suggest Bow River - live version from the Ringside tour. You’ll see another vocalist there too- as well as Jimmy as the band had two male vocalists- Jimmy and Ian Moss. Jimmy was lead in most songs, Bow River you’ll see them both. For pure wild Jimmy in his prime see Wild Thing by Cold Chisel.

The song was actually written by Canadian Jonathan Cain, a member of the early80s band Journey,. Both him and fellow Journey member Neil Schon played in Jimmys band in the late 80s-early 90s. If you have head of country singer Reba Macentire, she does a lame basic carbon copy of the song after Jimmys version was largely ignored in the US. Its an Aussie anthem...play it anywhere in the world and somewhere an Aussie will scream out the words..

Jimmy and his original band "Cold Chisel" are perhaps the kings of Aussie "pub rock" anthems. (Interesting you make the Springsteen connection as I feel Cold Chisel's "Khe Sahn" is the Aussie equivalent to "Born in the USA") The thing with these "anthems" is you don't sit down to learn them they are learnt by "osmosis". They are the background music at pubs and parties and still get just enough radio airplay to burrow in to the brain. My kids, 17 and 21, weren't even born when these songs came out and yet, somehow, know every word.
Comedian Adam Hills has a very funny video where he sings our national anthem to the tune of "Working Class Man" and it lifts it immeasurably.

Used for the movie Working Class Man. Try when he was with the group Cold Chisel especially the song Khe Sanh. Bee Gees used to perform in Aussie pubs and clubs when they were kids. Fights would break out and then they'd applaud the kids. Barry and Mo said Aussies are the only people they've seen fight sitting down...moving the beer to the side before throwing a punch, of course.

I was tapping away on my steering wheel whilst surrounded by the big rigs on the highway...the working class men pounding the tar to get their loads to wherever. Near home seeing farmers ploughing fields. Then a huge smile enveloped me as I watched a wife jump up and give her farmer/ husband a kiss up on his tractor in the mist of the early morning. Cows going in for milking and shops opening their doors. All this with the working class man in my thoughts and Jimmy pumping my eardrums in my car. Life as we know it here in Oz. @@Texas_Love you'll really like Cold Chisel too. Suggest doing 'Wild Thing' from the Last Stand (early 80s) or Bow River (2003) - both are live versions and be prepared to be absolutely blown away. I think Bow River is the Ringside tour. Others will confirm. 😊

My favourite song sung by Jimmy is Star Hotel by Cold Chisel. Such a great feel.

I'll accept the Springsteen comparison, or a better Mellencamp would also be accepted for Jimmy Barnes. You should definitely try Run to Paradise by The Choirboys. Now there's an 80s Australian rock anthem.

This song was released in 1985. The CD I had when I got my licence two years later was played everyday. I use to drive my Dad to work with Jimmy's music playing so so loud ...poor Dad. Still laugh about it now...

Cheers mate for your service even if in states
Most of us respect our vets we have a special day for them
It's called Anzac day so you might be interested in looking that up
We have the day off to celebrate what they sacrifice for the country most get up at dawn and go to memorials or rsl clubs
To pay respect as a military guy you may be interested

You got that right, in the late 80's I'd pick up my 2 best friends in the car (I was the only one with a provisional licence), we'd grab a pizza and 2L bottle of coke, put Cold Chisel in the cassette deck and just drive around our area, laughing... trivia about this video as well.... that is sugar cane being burned off... and apparently whilst they were filming.. all the snakes were coming out of the fields lmao...... they had to be careful x
