Thanks for your comment, sorry for the delay in replying: You just show your travel card at the ticket checkpoints. If you buy a longer card for a week, you will need to input your name. Make sure you also have ID which shows your name too! As a full ticket inspector will ask to see both...but at the metro gates you just show the card quickly.
I have read that it is necessary for a foreign tourist to produce his passport for inspection as well as the ticket itself when travelling on a BKK 7-day travelcard. Is this correct?

A passport isn't necessary - name only is ok... However... Make sure you also have ID which shows your name too! They do show all the usual symbols; MasterCard and Visa - MasterCard is most popular over there, so it seems, so I would guess cards which carry that should work ok. They take both contactless and pin :)
Do you need to validate that weekly ticket aswell somehow or you just show it to the ticket-controlants if they show up?

Any trouble getting these machines to work with an American-style dumb credit card?

Good thinking, but no information included if you are paying by CASH !!!
Most terminals also take cash... just pop notes/coins in the relevant slots. They also give change.
