I really like fresh shiitake mushroom bacon. The fresh ones, not dried and rehydrated, have an amazing texture. Use your standard marinade, but make sure you use extra oil in it. Then bake it in oven but dust it with nutritional yeast before the oven. Wins over meat eaters every time I make it.

Here is an idea. Layer your diakon with a strip of dry rice paper. Being rice it might absorb the moisture. Then marinate them both with your bacon sauce and cook together.

Yes. When I first started seeing rice paper bacon pop up on TH-cam about a year or so ago, there was a woman who suggested using 2-3 strips of rice paper together after cutting then putting in water to stick together then marinade then cook. It made for a heartier piece of "bacon."

I too have been on a quest to find a good fake bacon. Am looking forward to trying daicon! A note- when I make rice paper bacon, I take a bit of the marinade and mix in a bit of a dark balsamic vinegar, more smoked paprika and black pepper. It will be much darker. Then I paint on marbling using this mixture. It gives the color variation we all find appealing!

I don't eat anything with soy so the rice paper and daikon versions are great. I've also made carrot "bacon" before. Came out really good from the marinade I used then baked. You should try that and eggplant "bacon." Also, I originally spotted being making rice paper "bacon" on TH-cam about a year or so ago. One of the people who did it used 2-3 strips of paper that meld together by placing the 2-3 strips together before putting in water then marinade. It produced heartier, thicker pieces.

Yeah I know that was true at the time I wrote that remark, but like I said, I’ve only been vegetarian for 30 years, not vegan. I haven’t watched this video in a long time (my comment is over 2 years old), but from the title of it, it didn’t specify that he was comparing strictly vegan bacon substitutes.
Anyways, if you’re a vegan, I have good news for you: MorningStar Farms should be fully vegan by now, so you can now eat their products! ☺️ I knew they announced awhile ago that they were going vegan, so I just looked it up to see if it has happened by now, and it should be so because the year is 2022.
Some bits from a 2019 article:
_Like every other trendy diet follower, Morningstar Farms can’t wait to tell you that it’s vegan now. The Kellogg-owned company behind Chik Patties and fake bacon strips and Spicy Black Bean Burgers announced plans to makes all of its products 100% plant-based (vegan) by 2021._
_Roughly 50% of its portfolio of products have already made the switch to full vegan, and that should increase to about 65% by the end of 2019 and come 2021 all Morningstar Farms foods will be completely plant-based._
_It’s also good news for chickens and the environment, since switching to fully plant-based offerings will reduce the use of over 300 million eggs whites annually, according to Morningstar._
_“This will help us further our commitment to a greener world by helping to reduce the water waste, land usage, and carbon emissions associated with egg production,” said Mel Cash, Kellogg’s head of global marketing for plant-based protein, in a statement._
_To celebrate the good news, Morningstar is also unveiling a new vegan product: The Cheezeburger, which adds plant-based cheddar “cheeze” to the fake Meat Lover’s quarter-pound patty, giving swole vegans a whopping 23 grams of plant-based protein._

I haven't tried it, but Gaz Oakley (aka Avantgardevegan) uses coconut flakes to make "bacon" pieces for his Caesar Salad (basically the same recipe as the rice paper or daikon).

Anyone have any tips on where to find the All Vegetarian Inc. Vegan Bacon Strips? When I look online all I find are multi-packs. Thanks!

Try cooking them in cast iron skillet or griddle. it really adds something you can’t achieve from a regular pan.

I absolutely agree about Sweet Earth. I was thoroughly disappointed with that bacon for pretty much all the reasons you stated. Plus how messy it is. I’d give it negative stars if I could. I want to try the daikon bacon.

I really want to make a vegan "beef" pot roast, because my mom used to make it every week and it's very nostalgic. I was thinking something that shreds like jackfruit.. except not jackfruit because I don't really like jackfruit. Would love to see what you could come up with! Maybe seitan but processed in some insane way! 😍

I love the consept of bacon (extremely greasy and salty, warm stuff you can enjoy with many different foods) but I just cant stand the taste or smell of bacon. Same goes with chicken wings & drumsticks: love the consept of unhealthy food mixed with unhealthy sauce, can't stand the taste nor the idea of eating chicken skin. These vegan alternatives are awesome!

Do you think the daikon would work baked like the rice paper?

For your bacon made out of rice paper...I just tried this and it makes for a better texture, don't cut the rice paper.role it on to itself trapping some flavor in it. Fry it in a pan with a neutral oil as if real bacon, it will bubble more but simply pop them flat, let it crisp on both sides and voila. Better texture rice paper bacon.

I marinate the store bought bacon in a marinade of maple syrup, soy sauce and liquid smoke before I fry it.

If you'd like to mimic "the curl factor", throw some chopsticks across the board you let the bacon dry off on.. Might not be quite the same but helps add a bit of shape, i can imagine

You can make really good faux pork rinds with yuba skins.
