  • The ninth lecture on women of the Gilded Age in Southampton will be all about Ruth Wales DuPont who was born into a wealthy family and married into an even wealthier clan. Her grandfather, Salem H. Wales, was an imposing personage in New York and on the shores of Lake Agawam. Her uncle would be the future Secretary of State and Nobel winner Elihu Root, also prominent among Southampton summer colonists. All are amazed when Ruth married the socially awkward Henry Francis du Pont, but today he is remembered fondly in Southampton while the others are nearly forgotten.

I never knew , other than the historical societies that helped Mrs. Kennedy , that Mr.Dupont was so involved in the Whitehouse being refurbished. It was quite an undertaking as original pieces were taken upon many Presidents leaving office. Jackie was a breath of class and manners . She brought such style to the position of First Lady . She came from the Duponts social strata so their teaming up was natural I'm sure. Lovely presentation, thank you !

This was so fascinating and a part of my childhood. In the 1960's my father, through his uncle in law did construction and masonry work. My father talked about him all the time because he actually worked with Henry Francis through my uncle construction company with stone work. I know at least once he traveled to take apart a house that Henry Francis wanted to use. This was so exciting to listen hear!!!

I love hearing about the Gilded Age and this presenter was very knowledgeable in fully explaining Wales DuPont’s life. Now I have to watch her other videos on the subject. Thank you!

Thank you for this in-depth, fascinating history! So sorry to learn that the Chesterton House is gone, though sadly - not surprised.

Have any of the Royal submitted their DNA to Ancestry? If not, they should as I find from my own DNA, I have DNA connections to almost every part of Europe. English, Irish, Scottish, Sweden, etc etc

@@cindydufala7646 DuPont is a part of the 13 Families, they don't sound like very happy people.

It's called 6 degrees of separation. We are all related. Who cares

My grandfather’s ancestry came from Wales. His surname was Price. I wonder if we might be related to some of the royals. Lol

Thanks for noticing. It was a substitute image for one we couldn't find.
