There are many negative comments here about the robber barons and working people like slaves. You people know nothing about this family. They developed the nearby town and created jobs for the poor. They paid NYC wages in the hills of North Carolina. Most employees stayed because they were treated well, and next generations were employed here, too. They started a dairy and made ice cream. It was home to many!
Very good to have this comment, because I believe that those must have been among the most coveted jobs in NC.

I remember on a behind the scenes tour they were restoring a bedroom that was originally a nursery. They had records of the original wallpaper and a sample. They contacted the company in France to enquire about getting it reproduced. The company remembered the order, still had the print wheels, and was happy to make more for Biltmore.

When I was a guide at The Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island (built by the brother of Biltmore’s George Vanderbilt) one of Biltmore’s lovely guides came on my tour and then sent me a book about Biltmore. I still have it!

I have visited Biltmore 3 times. My favorite was Christmas and all the decorations. I would love to go again. I love this house. I would love to work there. Everytime I go they have opened more rooms for viewing. It's great.

I just returned from the Biltmore house today. This was the second time I visited the estate. I love the place and all the attendents are so helpful and informative. I highly recommend a visit the the Biltmore estate. It is worth the ticket price.
I was blessed to get a tour of Biltmore. Also, to attend a wedding on the grounds. It was stunning. It is an American treasure.

From my perspective, working at a historic home or museum would be my dream job. Love to hear these women acknowledge the privilege.

Privilege? It's more like a dream job after working hard to become an archivist.
I just came from there. The biggest mind-blow for me was that a home designed in the late 1800's was wired for electric even though the light bulb was not commercially successful until about that same time, and the electric utility industry was not even quite in its infancy at that time. It would be equivalent to a home built in 1990 being wired for the internet.
It also had functional plumbing. The water pressure and piping is better than what he use in homes today.
They had lights inside there indoor pool in 1890 and most people don't have lights in there pool now in 2022 lol.
Electricity was mostly used in public institutions and outdoor areas like streets, it wasn't that uncommon.
In the late 70's, the day after Christmas we stopped there and we were the only people. It was great. We just took our time. Loved it.
Imagine having a family history that other people want to preserve!
It is a beautiful place. The thing I found most interesting were the servant quarters, kitchens, laundry and the indoor pool.
Wow. Seeing the Biltmore is now on my bucket list.
The rich history of one of the men the helped develop our railway infrastructure is very interesting.
My Grandfather worked there in the early 1900s. There is a generations old family cemetary on the property. The gun club house was from my family as well. Jones.
This would be my dream job. To take care of that wonderful estate.

I used to go there as a child and really enjoyed the property and it’s fantastic history. Last time I went it felt like going to Disneyland. The crowds, Buses, etc detracts from the historic atmosphere. I am sure they need it to continue the operations but it’s not the same.
No matter how opulent you live, you can't take it with you.

We toured the home in late 2020, the home was decorated for Xmas, it was magnificent, we even road the elevator, anyone who hasn't toured the home needs to put it on their life time to do list.
I had a patient years ago who grew up at Biltmore. Her daddy was Sheriff of the little town and her momma was the dietitian at the estate.
My Grandparents lived a couple miles from Biltmore and my wife and I would visit just about every trip.

Cornelius Vanderbilt among other visionaries built New York City. The Vanderbilt's were known for building enormous mansions, with Biltmore being one as well as one on Park Ave, NYC belonging to the late Gloria Vanderbilt whom passed away over a year ago at the age of 93. Her son CNN anchor Anderson Cooper always told her he didn't believe in receiving an inheritance, he preferred to earn his own money but she left her many millions to him just the same. Now he has a son and the legacy lives on.

I think some of the descendants still live in the house. I've been there many times. Its beautiful.
No, no one currently lives in the house. We’ve been family friends of descendants of the family for 20 years and they live in a house on the same grounds as the estate (near it). But no one currently lives in it.
They don't live there. But they have renovated the upper levels with modern convinces and do visit during the summer months. Those sections of the house are cut off to the public. If they want to use the original pool or billiards room or something like that they can simply inform the staff to cut it from the tour. They may be antiques but it still belongs to them and they can do as they please with it.
No one lives in the actual house but there are descendants that live on the estate/property

I literally live less then an hour to this home, it is breathtaking
Many many years ago...went to my friends house at Christmas time...all her cards were hung everywhere... Biltmore was the family name. I asked her and was shocked that she is a Biltmore. She was so down to earth. Worked and had a regular life. My other friend said she was worth 22 million at that time in late 80s. She later told ne many stories playing at the Estate as a child. Class act all the way. Beautiful woman inside and out.
the people that lived in there were called vanderbilt
George and Edith Vanderbilt had only 1 child, Cornelia. Cornelia had 2 children,both boys, George and William Cecil. William Cecil Jr had 2 children William and Dina, who now own the estate.
So your story holds no water with the last name of Biltmore.
The Vanderbilts made up the name.

Rents and utilities takes most of our income. I lived P2P, but I was happy to have the incomes.
I was able to travel, buy what I wanted, and I do have a budget to this 79th year. I help non beggars help themselves, and I still saved.

Bluemoon, the servants lived in the lower quarters and there is a pool and an exercise gym, bowling alley. No secret passages. Lots of bathrooms. 64 , I believe. They entertained.

Biltmore Estates is a treasure to behold, if you have not visited, I highly recommend you do. When my parents were first married, my mom had a thin gold band, on their 45th anniversary my father purposed to my mom this time with a Hugh diamond. Needless to say she said yes. This was her favorite place to visit and did so on many occasion. I have been once and look forward to my next trip. Maybe I’ll get a high diamond, you never know!!

The “V” on the uniform coat button was likely the “V” in the United West Endies Company (V used to represent U as in LVKE or Luke). It was probably not for Van Der Bilt...
Also ties back into the Dutch East/West India company. Along with countless coat of arms that date back to Royals from Europe. Especially the headless knight/horseman being the hidden hand.

Even though the ladies in this program are very nice presentable are doing their presenting of information well. Personally I would have rather just viewed the pictures in greater depth. Anything about the history of life back then living in such a home.

2:58. Crease lines? Is that a photo of a photo? Because there is no way that big ass picture you are holding was folded up into a pocket of someone’s pants? carried for a time. Unfolded then refolded multiple times used for its purpose and still in that great of condition.
That was a blown up print of the photo , the photo would have been much smaller to fit into wallet.

I will be going on Friday. Haven’t been since so was 7. Walking down one of the staircases that was filled with people as a kid I imagined it was just me and I felt like a princess. I’m returning now at 25 and I know I will feel that same way. I’m so excited. This *palace* is absolutely beautiful.

This is Biltmore House, in Asheville, NC, one of the homes of George Washington Vanderbilt, son of William Henry Vanderbilt and grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt (The Commodore) - Opened officially Christmas Eve of 1895. It is the largest privately owned home in the United States, with over 4 acres of floor space. It sits on roughly 8000 acres, although the original estate sat on 125,000 acres. The enterprise is now managed by Vanderbilt's great grandson along with support from his brother and sister.
Mr. Vanderbilt wanted to create an property that was completely self-sustaining, hence the Dairy, which was the largest in the region, as well as one of Asheville's largest employers for a very long time, the farming, as well as the livestock raised on the estate, etc. Mr. Vanderbilt also conducted the first experiments in American Forestry on the estate.
It is most interesting, that by all accounts, Vanderbilt and his wife were known to be unusually kind and considerate to their staff, considering the service customs and mannerisms of the time. It is the number one tourist attraction in the region and, outside of healthcare and government, it is the largest employer in Buncombe County. It is so incredibly well preserved.. that walking onto the property is like walking through a time portal. It is an incredible glimpse into life and art in this historical time period and a Definite Must-See.
Biltmore always amazes me
It's been decades since I've been to Biltmore House but I've always wanted to go back as a friend of mine went on a long weekend and went on several of the tours including one where you were allowed to go out on the roof and she stayed at one of the hotels on the estate.
One of my favorite things on the basic tour I took was the painting of George Vanderbilt by John Singer Sargent, a favorite artist of mine.

Not all, but a lot of these stories are fake, this Biltmore Estate was from our old world and served a different purpose! The Vanderbilt's repurposed this place like most of our ancient buildings and called it their home, our entire history is fake!
These elite bloodlines don’t get to marry for love! They’re told who their spouse will be because they want to keep the money in the family! But it’s a nice fairy tale though! That said, the men are fairies and the women are men!! Where then do these children come from? Petri dishes?? 😂
