I'm African American however I love, love authentic Mexican food. I am over 50 years old and have become aware of this. My daughter has introduced me to so many delectable dishes. Tamales is one of those. Your video is so straight forward. Maybe I can convince my daughter to make Tamales with me. Thank you for making this video. Those Tamales look so delicious!
Mexican food crosses all racial boundaries. This seems like a really good way to make them. One of my favorite foods is tamales, and they're tricky to perfect. Definitely gonna try this soon.
I'm not Mexican, but when I was 21 I worked as a dishwasher in a Mexican restaurant. The ladies there taught me how to make many things from scratch. But, I never learned how to make tamales. After watching your video, I can't wait to give it a try. Your video was very well done, the process well explained. 😊 ❤
2 years ago in December I made 7 dozen tamales by myself. I had researched and researched on the internet on various recipes as this was the first time I had ever made them. I used my Instant Pot and I cooked the chiles in with the beef which kills two birds with one stone and infuses the meat w/ the chiles while cooking as well. I used unprepared masa and I learned a trick, I used Crisco, since we don't eat pork, and learned to use my blender and whip up the shortening to make it light and fluffy then mix it in the masa along with the beef/chile broth. I learned to drop a little bit of the masa in a glass of water and if it sinks it needs more shortening but if the drop of masa floats in the water then it's ready to use. I got one of those tamale spreaders and it's a HUGE helper! After I got all the tamales made, I also include a slice of potato and green olives in them, I posted it on FB, it was really late at night, and one of my Mexican friends commented she was "coming over" and she really did! She raved about my tamales. I also gave some to my niece who is 1/2 Mexican and she loved them so I must have done something right. They were so delicious, better than any Mexican restaurant here in town and I live 10 miles from the border!
"Let them sit for 20 to 30 minutes" Are you crazy??? I can't walk away cause my family will finish them in less than 10!!! They look delicious!!

Possibly the easiest recipe for tamales that I've seen. Thank you! I appreciate the easy explanation, the clear step by step, and the good camera work. This will be the recipe I try for my first time ever!
Looks so easy but really takes a some skill and experience. Just keep trying. I miss living in Arizona where there were many people who made these at home to sell.
I've tried a few recipes from other sites. My tamales never came out all that flavorful. I tried your recipe for the first time maybe 6 months ago. And you're spot on the ingredients , you show it the most simplest way. I've made tamales over 10 times so far and it comes out the same everytime. Thank you for a great recipe.
Mama, I’m a single dad that loves to cook! I just wanted you to know that I L O V E. Your teach method. The way that you are VERY detailed in the little details of your cooking. Blessings to you and your family and I am PROUDLY subscribing to your channel!
You’re awesome for being a father who’s also a MAN! And I know that sounds funny, these days there’s a huge difference. Your kids are so lucky to have you!
You make your tamales just like my momma. My momma is now in her 80's and we make them every holiday. But I now record her so that I can hear her talk of her life . Thank you for sharing your recipe and your story of your Abuela.
ear7day you will treasure those videos, I am doing the same with my mom, in her 80’s too, she’s Slovak and cooks foods from the old days, I never want to forget or be without that. Or her, actually.
ear7day Same here! I so wish I had some to watch or listen to! When my grandma was alive I tried to record her and she made me turn it off. She said “I don’t want to be in no moving pictures” ..hahahahaha!!! 😂 It was surely a different day before everything went digital ✌️✌️
Ok, made them and they were amazing. Never thought I could do it on my own. Great video on instruction. My husband fell in love again after 20 yrs, lol. Love all yr recipes. Thank u.💜
Where I live corn husk are really hard to find. So when I find them I freeze them in my deep freezer and when I get ready to use them I just boil them in water on the stove and they turn out perfect. I just wanted to share that little tip.
Another tip and yes it sounds crazy but if you have no corn husks at all, like some areas they don't have any. You can use Aluminum foil YES lol in place of the corn husk. Spread in the middle of the foil and fold long sides first and fold ends like a little package to seal tight. I found myself dying to make tamales one time and of course I had no husks, so I tried the foil method and for the few I made the foil was fine and I was able to stand up and stack them (the foil kept the tamale together) they cooked at the same time as with husk and did NOT taste like foil. It really worked for the few tamales I was craving so bad for!
My wife and I made a batch last night, long slow process for a first timer. Hardest part was getting the masa on the husks but with patience we got it done. End result was so delicious! Thank you for sharing with us! So delicious we are in the process of a second batch for tonight. I like spicy so we are adding Chile de arbol for a kick this time, fyi to any heat lovers like me. Blessings!
They really look good, Angelica! You can see that alot of effort and love go into your cooking! It's also wonderful that you have so many treasured memories of your grandmother that you share with us all! Thanks!! 🙏🇨🇦❤
I'm Hispanic and didn't get any recipes from my Grandma before she passed. This is similar to the flavor that reminds me of her. Thank you for the steps in your description as well. The taste is good and the portions are perfect for my family of 4.
@@blackfacehardon5163 Damn why you angry! You must be hungry. It's ok, I get mad and say stupid shit when I'm hungry too. No worries. I hope you eat soon 😗
I just made these and they are DELICIOUS!!! I used the beef tallow as well because we don't eat pork and I can't wait to make more for Christmas. Thank you for sharing!!
growing up in the 60's we used to hang at the neighbors house all of the time. Jaunita is her name. We all jumped in on the cooking and prep work. we made tamale's torts, flower and corn and everything in between. She would cook all day for the whole neighborhood. If you were ever hungry you knew where you could go for a good meal. and it was FREE! I'm 67 and my wife and I still make a bunch of the ole stuff Jaunita taught me to make. A lot of it is very time consuming but always well worth it. Thank you for sharing your recipie.
I love cooking and trying new recipes. My husband and I love Tamales. He was searching the Internet and was thinking of buying some, but holy cow, they were so expensive, and what if we didn't like them? So I told him I would find a recipe and give it a try. I'm 67 years old, so you can say I'm a seasoned cook. I made these and they were fantastic. I had to order the peppers from Amazon since the local stores didn't carry any dried peppers. I braised my roast which only 3 hours, and the rest went as planned. Hubby tied the husks and the rest was history. ;) I had a bit of puree left, so I added a few seasonings, a smidge of tomato puree and cider vinegar and made a flavorful hot sauce. It all was so delicious. Thanks you. I will make these again and again.
Absolutely beautiful! I love the pride that the Mexican culture has especially when it comes to food. I would love to master this and pass it onto my kids. God bless you
Thank you so much for this recipe. I have been married for 38 years to a wonderful Mexican man. I met him 40 years ago and met his family shortly after. My introduction to his family was then making tamales. I was so intimidated my the whole process. I tried this recipe 3 years ago and have been tamales ever since. Our 6 children absolutely love them. I make them for Christmas. Thank you so much breaking this down. Much love.
I live in the border also, and they sell pretty decent tamales not too far from my house!!! I love them for breakfast, I like to reheat them on a pan the next day!!! Wonderful in the morning!!!
Thank you!!! All the other recipes were for really wet masa, which I can't stand, and the masa you made is just the right consistency. I like to make dough balls, so I'll use a little less water etc, but you hit the nail on the head with this. You should also, (just because) do a video for the whole bag of maseca tamal. (4.4 lb bag) That way we don't have to double, or triple up, on the ingredients. There's no real descriptions anywhere else that I've found for masa, as good as yours. 💯 Thanks again, y mucho gracias, ~a Guero Tamalero, in New Mexico ❤️🫔
When I order Mexican food I will always get a tamale on the side. I didn't realize there was so much work in making these. My father inlaw was Mexican and would make and cook all day then freeze in portions for later. RIP Phil. I will follow so that I will learn how to make my favorite foods. God Bless.
I literally just made these only I used chicken. SOOOOOOO GOOOOD!!! I LITERALLY WANT TO EAT LIKE 5 but I'll stop at 2..... MAKE THESE, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH

This video was done very well. I had been working up to make tamales all week and was kinda nervous until I came across this video!! I made mine today and they turned out perfect!! Thank you and thank you for sharing your story! ❤️☺️
2nd time making these. Of course it's 3 in the morning here 😉 when I get cravings, I get cravings 😋 just gotta finish the mass, combine n steam. Thank you so so much for sharing.
My neighbor makes these and I never had one before. He gave me a few and I took them home. I heated them up in the microwave and I was eating them and was like these suck there so tuff. I called him and he told me im not sapose to eat the tusks. I ate 2 corn husks. I felt like an idiot
@@carolynbroussard8198 now why would any one make something like that up. I totally believe it especially if you really haven’t experienced eating tamales. And he seems genuinely embarrassed that he did eat them like that. One thing he can say is he got his fiber. 😂
I grew up in church attended primarily by Mexicans. Every Sunday after mass we would go to La Cosina to eat breakfast or lunch as a community. Your tamales take me back 40 years to this small church where every Sunday I would watch Mexican wives and grandmothers cooking authentic and traditional meals. Thank you for taking me back Mama!
I am the eldest daughter of many kids. I have very fond memories of all of us in the kitchen assembly making pork tamales for the holidays. We made 12 dozen every year to share with relatives and neighbors. Some tamales had olives and raisins believe it or not. We had all the kitchen burners ❤and outdoor patio kitchen burners going. Egg nog and cookies were our reward. I wished I had known those were the best times of my life before you get older and life happens. Gracias por la receta ❤️
I’m making these tomorrow! The meat is cooking now and chiles are gutted ready for tomorrow 🤤 I’m from Wisconsin and my paternal grandma, who passed away in 2009, lived in the tail end of Texas, every time we’d visit she’d send us home with a cooler full of tamales 🫔❤️ the majority of my memories of her are of her prepping tamales in the garage where her set up was. I never learned her recipe, but my dad and I are excited to try this one:) last time we attempted making tamales ourselves was like 8 years ago 🤭
Same here! Meat and chili done tonight. Will do the masa and complete tomorrow. Excited and nervous! I really hope they come out just as good as her recipe!
Oh my Goodness.....watching you make these Tamales was like watching my Mother-In-Law make hers. I am keeping your fabulous video to make sure I do the right steps and measurements. Thank you so much for sharing - I might be inspired to make some by myself - just like you did!!
I’ve never tried tamales. My dad said his mom would spend all day in the kitchen making them. He lives out of state and my parents are flying in this weekend so I am going to make this recipe. I never knew my grandparents on my dad’s side as he lost them in a tragic accident when he was 8 years old. I can tell my dad has fond memories of his parents. He says his mom was an excellent cook and his dad handmade everyone of his toys. He said he had gotten his first BB gun that year and brought it to school for show and tell. Times have changed so much. I’m looking forward to bringing some good memories back and I can tell by watching this video that your tamales are made with love! Thank you !!!
I would like to thank you for sharing this! I absolutely hit it outta the park! This was my first time making Tamales by myself and by the help of my kitchenaid mixer! Thank you once again!

I'm going to make tamales again. I found that this is my favorite video you made on making tamales. Short, complete and to the point. 11:49 must be a record for making a complete tamale recipe. Way to go.
Thank you! My maternal grandmother passed away when I was about 6. My aunt on my mother's side used to make the tamales every Christmas Eve for Christmas Day. We kids would spread the masa onto the corn leaves as she prepared the filling. I never knew the recipe. My mom wasn't taught to make them and she tried it twice. The first time, it came out delicious. However, she made them the 2nd time and (God bless her) they were terrible so she never made them again. My younger sister was always a good cook and she has tried your recipe and she said it came out good! Can't wait to try them AND make them myself! God bless for sharing!
I have a friend and her mom teach me how to make tamales over a year ago. It was a loooong process. I appreciate every single tamale I eat. My friend's mom boiled her pork instead of slow cook it and before putting the tamales into a steamer, we tied the husks with the filling inside with a string of part of a corn husk so nothing would fall out. Best tamales ever.
I have been watching lots of how to make tamales videos, and I think yours look the most delicious! I copy and pasted your recipe, and when I make tamales I will use your recipe. Thank you so much for showing us how to make your moist, and delicious looking tamales!
You are the best! Thank you for sharing the sweet story about your grandma. I lost my grandmother at age 12, but I too always have the memory of her cooking.
I love tamales. I learned long ago about food and culture. I am just an American girl raised in Florida. Southern cuisine, I got. Lol but I worked at a VA hospital in my 20s. I worked with people from all over the world. It was wonderful. I learned about food and culture, from everywhere! Amazing! I love studying culture through foods. I can cook all kinds of cultural foods like a native because of all the wonderful people I learned from. Now I wish to learn from you. Thank you for the video.
I've had the pleasure to learn to cook from many friend's family members. I love food and have been cooking and baking since I was 7. I'm Korean. Grew up in the USA. I had a Mexican friend in gradeschool who had the sweetest abuela. She let me cook with her in the kitchen. She spoke little english and I knew zero Spanish. I watched and copied. It was a family recipe so I never was given a copy which was understandable. I don't recall the recipe or all the steps. I've been searching for her recipe for years. I've had decent tamales, but they were never quite right. I made this along with your pork tamles... tastes so much like my childhood. Thank you
When the time is right, look into getting a Vitamix. I bought a “reconditioned” model for hundreds less and it still has a 5 year warrantee. Anything that can liquify an avocado pit is awesome!

Would you share where you can purchase a reconditioned one? I have never been able to justify the expense of a new one, but have always wanted to have one. Thanks 😊
I love tamales! I guess I should just make my own since every restaurant here, I have found, in Florida drowns them in some sort of mole, I grew up eating tamales with no sauce needed!
Hi Angelica, You did an absolutely wonderful job explaining your process for tamale preparation. My mom did her recipe deliciously for so many years. However her recipe was so complicated yet the finished product was so so good. With your preparation it seemed so simple. There was no mess or tedious process to follow. I have a huge family and everyone is asking for tamales. Since your recipe was so easy Im definitely going to do it your way. Thank you so much for making this video. It's truly appreciated. Keep up the good work. Bless you🌻
first off, i want to thank you for sharing this DIY tamales video. i was raised in Mississippi from 10 yrs old until end of high school. often time i would order three dozen of home made beef hot tamales when i'm too busy to cook weekly. there was a black family home made tamales near our grocery store. he grew mustard green for us to sell and we buy the hot tamales from him. i always wanted to do home made hot tamales, finally came upon this video after 65 years gone by. Again thank you for your well thought out instruction and easy step to make this possible. Bob
Fantastic recipe, I walk past all of the ingredients, the pot and everything in HEB everyday, never knew they were so easy to make,... at least you make it look easy. I don't have a Crock Pot but so do have an Instant Pot, which I'm sure will work just as good.

I tried this recipe in Christmas Eve 2019. But thanks to a little grinch that stole my Christmas named Damon. I didn’t get to finish the recipe because my water broke once I started to put the masa on the first corn husk. Lol, everything went to waste. I was so sad but happy of course but I was so ready to eat some tamales and that didn’t happened . Lol
My grandma used to make tamales every New Year’s Eve with her companion. When he passed away she started making them with me and my nieces. How did they turn out? I'll be using this for new years 💘
Looks so easy but really takes a some skill and experience. Just keep trying. I miss living in Arizona where there were many people who made these at home to sell.
THANK YOU WAS SO EASY.......
@@xx_death_wish_xx8780 did you end up using this recipe?
Just made them and my husband on Christmas Eve and he was blown away. Thank you again for posting this.
Yep!!! Iam going 2 try her Recipe also this Thanksgiving!!!!!
Your story about your grandmother touched my heart. My paternal great grandmother was a Mexican lady who made the best tamales. I miss her!🥰❤️
🥰🙏🏼
Hey sis! My grandmother was Mexican too! ❤
Thank you so much. 🙏
You’re awesome for being a father who’s also a MAN! And I know that sounds funny, these days there’s a huge difference. Your kids are so lucky to have you!
Simply Mamá Cooks ...I second that! ❤️ Love from AL
May God Bless you and your Family. Curtis like she said your kid or kids is Lucky
It was surely a different day before everything went digital ✌️✌️
Ok, made them and they were amazing. Never thought I could do it on my own. Great video on instruction. My husband fell in love again after 20 yrs, lol. Love all yr recipes. Thank u.💜
I guess that's what I have to do then is make tamales
@@sarahs7751 Oh yeah! Try lingua tamales. Just don't tell him what lingua is until after dinner.
Lucky you
The fell in love part was only that day, lol
Damn Mamá really saved someone's marriage with tamales eh?
@@doloresleyva8810 I’m wondering instead of foil can parchment paper be used?
My wife and I made a batch last night, long slow process for a first timer. Hardest part was getting the masa on the husks but with patience we got it done. End result was so delicious! Thank you for sharing with us! So delicious we are in the process of a second batch for tonight. I like spicy so we are adding Chile de arbol for a kick this time, fyi to any heat lovers like me. Blessings!
My husband likes to add jalapeno slice surprises in ours 😅
They really look good, Angelica! You can see that alot of effort and love go into your cooking! It's also wonderful that you have so many treasured memories of your grandmother that you share with us all! Thanks!! 🙏🇨🇦❤
Thank you so much Susan! 😊🙏
I'm Hispanic and didn't get any recipes from my Grandma before she passed. This is similar to the flavor that reminds me of her. Thank you for the steps in your description as well. The taste is good and the portions are perfect for my family of 4.

growing up in the 60's we used to hang at the neighbors house all of the time.
I have been listening to this on repeat to get the steps into my subconscious and be ready for the real thing! And today is the day!
Absolutely beautiful! I love the pride that the Mexican culture has especially when it comes to food. I would love to master this and pass it onto my kids. God bless you
I love that you're passing it down to your babies
Btw it’s an indigenous dish not Mexican!! The tribes in the U.S. and most countries down south also has it in their cusine. It’s not a Mexican dish
I love how she used the beef Tallow instead of lard… I love her recipes ! Very step buy step
This was my best teacher...hands down...ppl like her teaching others the magnitude of her culture/ tradition/ customs with food!!..amen...blessed
Much love.
Your tamales are almost the same as my family taught me they are from Juarez Mexico and El Paso Texas. Good work💪
I live in the border also, and they sell pretty decent tamales not too far from my house!!!
Thanks again, y mucho gracias,
~a Guero Tamalero, in New Mexico ❤️🫔
When I order Mexican food I will always get a tamale on the side. I didn't realize there was so much work in making these. My father inlaw was Mexican and would make and cook all day then freeze in portions for later. RIP Phil. I will follow so that I will learn how to make my favorite foods. God Bless.
I literally just made these only I used chicken. SOOOOOOO GOOOOD!!! I LITERALLY WANT TO EAT LIKE 5 but I'll stop at 2..... MAKE THESE, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH
Holy Guacamole, Best video on cooking tamales on TH-cam! Her voice? Fantastic, every detail just perfect...what are the chances I still screw this up...ehhh..60/40? But I'll keep trying, they look, delicious!
This video was done very well. I had been working up to make tamales all week and was kinda nervous until I came across this video!! I made mine today and they turned out perfect!! Thank you and thank you for sharing your story! ❤️☺️
This was super helpful. I've been watching and reading tamale recipes all day and this is the only one that made me feel like I could do it.
Omg this reminds me of my Grandma too!!! When you said that, I immediately started to cry. Thank you for your video💞💞
Definitely, I will make these tamales. It's time i do my own and avoid buying the tamales. Thanks for the recipe. Alice

There is a short list of "perfect foods". This is definitely one of them, and I thank you for helping me make it for my family!
The meat is cooking now and chiles are gutted ready for tomorrow 🤤
I’m from Wisconsin and my paternal grandma, who passed away in 2009, lived in the tail end of Texas, every time we’d visit she’d send us home with a cooler full of tamales 🫔❤️ the majority of my memories of her are of her prepping tamales in the garage where her set up was. I never learned her recipe, but my dad and I are excited to try this one:) last time we attempted making tamales ourselves was like 8 years ago 🤭
I’m going to try these this year as well. Good luck!! & Merry Christmas 😊
Same here! Meat and chili done tonight. Will do the masa and complete tomorrow. Excited and nervous! I really hope they come out just as good as her recipe!
We are too!
Lol
Oh my Goodness.....watching you make these Tamales was like watching my Mother-In-Law make hers. I am keeping your fabulous video to make sure I do the right steps and measurements. Thank you so much for sharing - I might be inspired to make some by myself - just like you did!!
I hear you there I miss my grand parents and mom,and dad alot :(
I love that you do not waste time. Just the facts. You are a great teacher! Thank You. I'm glad I found you!
The way you honor your grandmother is a testament to you. I’m a new subscriber and I appreciate your style of cooking! ( I’m also Irish )☘️
Thank you so much. 😊🙏
You’re welcome!
You seem like a great guy james, you should also try pozole, crane con chile, and a mexican elote, which is very easy.just google them and you will see how to make them.thanks for checking out my culture
I never thought of adding the Chile to the Masa! I’m going to try that on my next batch! Thanks for the idea! Excellent video!
Just in time for the holidays! Will be trying this recipe out
You are the best! Thank you for sharing the sweet story about your grandma. I lost my grandmother at age 12, but I too always have the memory of her cooking.
You are a great teacher! Thanks for the excellent demonstration. 😊 🌶🧄
You can't go wrong with this tamale recipe. I tried it and it is so good! The sauce in the masa is a nice touch.
Yes! My mother used to always do this so we could tell the difference easier between red beef and green chile tamales!
I've made tamales all my life but so different from these.i'm going to try your recipe because it looks so good and very easy.
My husband and I will definitely be trying out this recipe very soon! Appreciate the clear soft spoken explanation.
Thank you
I tried this as my first try in making tamales. It was really good and my family loved it as well. Thank you so much
Yummy! Who's craving for some tamales now? :)

I am 70 years old, and made your tamale recipe for the first time!
It was easy and delicious 😋
Thank you!
Same here I lost both my grandparents at 10 i will always remember them 😢
When the time is right, look into getting a Vitamix. I bought a “reconditioned” model for hundreds less and it still has a 5 year warrantee. Anything that can liquify an avocado pit is awesome!
I have one, but I didnt want to stain it with chile puree. 😁
That sounds expensive
Would you share where you can purchase a reconditioned one? I have never been able to justify the expense of a new one, but have always wanted to have one. Thanks 😊

Awesome. Did you use recipe amounts to 2lbs of beef or the 4lbs she got?
funny the time we spend with those we have loved and lost is exactly what we needed to here. ty
It's nice to see young people keep traditions that were passed down alive for future generations.
I love tamales! I guess I should just make my own since every restaurant here, I have found, in Florida drowns them in some sort of mole, I grew up eating tamales with no sauce needed!
Where can I get the recipe?

Looks delicious. I love your additions to the masa. Too many times I’ve eaten dry masa tamales with no flavor. I’ll be trying these for sure!
I'll be headed to Heb aswell, always been scared to make Tamales, but atleast now I'll Attempt to make them. Loved this Video. 👍😁

Lol
I was so ready to fight Damon until I finished reading 😂 congratulations ❤
I'm literally just going to do this recipe lol
