I have only just found you. Thank you for all of the information and help. (I am 70 and live in Australia, just by the way) Thanks especially for the full orchestral score. I can read both vocal and orchestral scores, as it happens, so have found it very helpful. I agree that this recording is much better than some others that I have heard. There is no strain in the voices. Thank you again.
I would like to say thank you all for your support over this whole copyright incident. My channel was briefly deleted, but now we are all back as we were before! To celebrate, here is a video of my favourite recording of one of my favourite pieces ever! Hope you all enjoy :)
Correct! and the last song, “Abschied” is not only the greatest art song ever written, IMHO, it’s the single most profoundly beautiful piece of music ever written

Thank you so much for this version! Ich was looking so long for a score version of this piece, but with a alt and not baritone fpr the 2nd, 4th and 6th part!
i just heard this at the houston symphony and wow…. that was amazing… she had to bid farewell to their friend and wanted to join him in the afterlife… that is powerful…. i can’t put how i feel about this into words… i haven’t dealt with losing a loved one at the time of my life that i would REALLY feel it (i lost my great grandmother in 2014 when i was 6 or 7) so i don’t exactly know how that feels. i can’t stop thinking about this piece

I have only seen this piece live once. One of the great and tragically underrated conductors of the 1990s Stuart Challender conducted it with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He was HIV positive and had been "outed" as such by the press (such an incredibly awful situation) and we all knew he might not live long even though he was not old. This was his favorite piece of music and his last performances I saw were of this work. I could not stop crying because I loved his conducting and loved how much he promoted 20th century music (he gave the Australian concert premieres of countless 20th century works like Lulu and works by Ligeti and Xenakis). He made the SSO into a magically intense orchestra and they never sounded like that afterwards either. Stuart was an Incredible musician and his favorite alto voice sang in the Das Lied: Elizabeth Campbell who was I think very close to Stuart. It wasn't the greatest musical performance of the piece but as an emotional one it was unbearable. I never want to see this work live again. It's too much for me.
Keith, thank you so much for sharing this tragic but beautiful story. I had never heard of Stuart Challender, but he sounds like a truly great conductor, I will take a listen to some of his recordings. I think if I were ever to hear Das Lied performed live I would be in tears Der Abschied, it really is such a powerful work.
excuse me good man. a question from one of the subscribers; Are you planning to do the remaining parts of Puccini's "il Trittico"? Grateful for their work
I origanlly only planned to do Gianni Schicchi, however I may do the rest at some point! I do have many other planned videos to get through though, so it may be a while before you see them.
The singers are among the best , but this recording is so freaking soft edge and faceless . Please listen to Klemperer if you want a similar approach, but livelier . Other great Das lied available are also : Reiner , Eiji Oue , Bernstein with Vienna Phil + James King + Dieskau , finally Kubelik with Bavarian Radio + Baker .
Agree on all counts except Reiner ...............Klemperer has stature Bernstein emotion Oue great recording quality.......and I just ordered the Kubelik on Audite
It's honestly kind of funny that I see you on every Mahler video 😂. I wish I had the tenacity with every Mahler video. The man is the greatest of all composers, and if he wasn't the best, he is the greatest of the romantics.

Great find
The 1812 overture had been written years before Das Lied.
