This is his best symphony. There is a passion in this. Oh, and special thanks to those who put in a time when a favorite part occurs--I do go back and listen to those sections.
The Chorus Mysticus is so powerful. It has a depth of beauty that I have yet to find in a piece of music. If anyone knows of anything that can touch the heart and spirit the way this piece can please suggest it to me. That's the way we find new musical treasures to share with one another.
@@thesalishsea2958 I think that there is only the ending of his second symphony which can be compared to this ending. Mahler stands above all the endings.
At 1:15:10 when the chorus mysticus enters with the final words of Goethe’s Faust, you can tell from the rhythm and, to a lesser extent, even the notes that Mahler took inspiration from Liszt’s own Faust Symphony.
1:21:10 I feel SO bad for the first trumpet player. He was absolutely amazing in every place he was and then he messes up the LITERAL LAST NOTE!!!!!!!!!!
A lot of the second part sounds like glorified Wagner, you can almost imagine Wagner tubas playing in some of the sections. I wonder why he didn't actually use them? The tenor solo part is worthy of Siegmund or Siegfried, as well!
This performance is better with the score than having to watch Bernstein's choreographed self-indulgent histrionics for the Humphrey Burton camera. Every shot is calculated to the second, including the opening podium shot of LB receiving the blessing from the muses! LOL!

Last remark basically unintelligible; and no, it's not "his best symphony"--the 'passion' breaks down into lyric redundance.

I agree, this is my favorite of Mahler's symphonies.

I noticed that too
Anybody else hear a hint of Schindler's List at 5:27 in the clarinets and violas?
absolutely - Williams constantly "borrows" ideas from other composers
56:01 Celesta, harmonium, harp, and piano playing simultaneously.
Gorgeous
11:50 the Accende Lumen Sensibus is one of my favorite spots.
Chorus Mysticus at 1:15:05
most ambitious crossover ever

54:50 the gate of heaven
This is one of my favorite parts as well! You can hear the harmonium in the background.
@@ethansmusic The instrumentation is beyond this world.

Nothing tops Goethe

This is basically if the finales Beethoven's 9th, and Mahler's 2nd did a fusion dance, and took countless steroids.
Can we get more terrible quality plz?

This part is a head banger!
