SUPER useful!!! I am now a follower... I just got a DV4 for free because the screen was supposedly damaged. I watched the video and disassembled the laptop only to find that the screen connector wasn't securely seated.(Which solved my issue.) However, I followed the entire video through and cleaned the fan and re-applied processor paste and now it runs like it was brand new out of the box. Once again, your video saved me sooo much time and frustration trying to take this jigsaw puzzle apart...
The airflow is completely blocked in mine, and two years ago when this happened I got so frustrated I broke the plastic backing covering the fan to clean it and replaced the fan and the back of the laptop. Now I see the actual way to clean it, thank you!! I'm not buying another laptop unless it has a door to access the fan!
Just finished cleaning my DV4, it works GREAT!!! The fan was DISGUSTING and dust was covering the grill so air could not get out. Extremely quite and runs like a dream! Thanks for the video, very helpful!!!!!! :D
omg your a life saver! i opened my laptop for the first time by just watching this video and it went great! i ended up having two dust strips like the one in the video clogging up my fan. i used silver arctic 5 for the heat sink and now my portable cooler is louder than my laptop :D
Great Video even on fast motion. I lost my dashboard light afterward, But the laptop is so much quiet now. And its been 20 min since cleaning, TEMP is holding nicely. Thank you.
Is it this hard to access the fan on all newer laptops now, or just the HPs? This is insane; the fan should be the first thing we see when we screw the nails on the exterior.
thanks for this video, it took me about two hours for the tear down and build up. i am having trouble with a guys dc plug, this kept it from being a whole weekend project.
TYVM for this. I don't think I woulda had the nuts to do this without it! I completed the process (about 2 hours in total) and when it didn't boot I was very discouraged, but I reseated the ram chips and voila, good as new (for an HP lol). This saved me from a costly repair or from buying a new lappy. I have only 3 screws left over (2 are the silver sort so if anyone has an idea where they go lmk). I also found the schematic plans useful (google for dv4 schematics and click to hp site).

i had a problem with my fan being seriously loud all the time and almost always on, i tried to take it apart but found it way too difficult and didnt want to damage anything (i have little experience with dissambling computers) so i put it all back. I then found the problem getting worse so i took the handheld end of a vacuum cleaner (the small suction part) and just put that over the fan hole in the bottom of the laptop....worked perfectly, and now the fan makes very little noise at all!
thank you, was very useful for me too, my display quit working.. looks like it is getting power but now visuals; the data cable might be damaged or partially unplugged.. going to open her up and see what is going on..
Not being a computer savy guy. After seeing your video. I attempted and was successful. With some patience this can be done by a novice. replaced the fan works great.
I totally dig the music! Who is the guitar player (pardon my ignorance)? Great video also, may just save me some money knowing where the problem lies. If not I'll just box it up with a $100 bill and send it to you! LOL
All of these issues however generally require motherboard and CPU replacements. If are unsure if the unit is POSTing, after powering on the unit, wait a few seconds and attempt to toggle the CAPSLOCK. If it responds and lights up when you press the key, the unit actually POSTing, you however have no video output. This can be confirmed by plugging up an external monitor to the VGA port. A very common issue for this model is for the LCD cable to become unplugged from the motherboard.

My fan is still giving me trouble and is now making a loud noise so we are going to replace it with a new one. But after I put my laptop back together the wifi wasn't working anymore. It keeps saying something about the Local Area Connection 6" Adapter, so I think I may have damaged something while I was in it without even realizing it. The wifi light will not come on either, it'll connect to the internet with an Ethernet cable but not wirelessly now. Can you please help me to figure out what the problem is asap?
You can fix this issue by taking out the following screws: The 4 screws under the battery, use the CD-ROM ejector tab and take out the 2 screws under, the 2 rear hinge screws on the left and right of the bay, 3 keyboard screws, one under the BIOS bay door. Now flip over the unit, removed the keyboard, and take out the 2 screws (black and silver that are on the keyboard cover/function switch cover bezel and unplug the cable. You should now see the LCD cable after removing that last bezel.
Great video and great description. I have a huge home fan pointed to my laptop and it's running almost at room temperature, but it's so noisy I can't hear my own thinking. I'll take notes of this video and try cleaning it myself, if I don't come back and comment, means I f*cked it up.
I have a blackscreen and blinking LEDs (caps and scroll lock)once every 2 seconds. The fan is on quietly, and the media LEDs are on as well as the Power and AC Plug lights. Yet all I see is a blank screen.
I don't know if you still care or not but I had this problem and I figured out that is was the angle of my laptop. If I started it up with the screen 90 < 0 degree angle then it turned turned on.
On my computer all the lights on the keyboard turn on, and you can hear the fan quietly running. There are 4 Blinks on the Caps Lock and Number Lock buttons but nothing shows up on the screen. what is wrong, and who can we send it to, to get it fixed, please help SOOON.
Hi, in 01:40 you are unscrewing a screw that is partially worn out on my laptop. Can't unscrew it without risking more ware and I'm running out of ideas. What can i do? The noise my fan's making is driving me up the wall.
have they upgraded anything to the dv4? I'm looking at the dv4-5162 with all the cool sense technology and stuff...but will it colape the vents and fan just like this one? Will the laptop die in 3 years if I don't clean those things?
@SlaginnMetal247 pretty much if you anti static yourself, there is nothing to worry about electronics are more resistant to damage than most people think. just do it
I have an HP Pavilion DV-4 (Model No. DV4T-1600). The screen is dark. It boots and can be seen on a different screen using a VGA cable. Should I replace the entire screen or the video inverter? Thanks for your help.
um i am having truble removing the motherboard from the case its is very lose but i tried using a litle forse to pull it out bot it wont, i removed the two screws from the side an one last screw from the top are ther any other? pleas help i need to replace the fan
Now can someone tell me how hard is it for HP to make cleaning lids for CPU and GPU, which could make this cumbersome task turn into 2 minute solution!?????
I'v seen that lint problem in many laptops... But in one laptop the owner kept using it without taking it to me or another professional. And b/c of that it damanged the GPU. So if you are noticeing high heat and turn off's like that then either do a full cleaning like this video or take it to someone. You can damager parts on the board that will make you need to buy a new board to replace the entire motherboard. I use arctic silver 5 simply b/c its a better paste. But 5 stars on this video :)..
There is someone in my area selling one of these laptops for ONLY 170$! In the post he says it get's really hot, and it has something to do with vga. I do realize I am taking a risk here, cause it may be something much worse. I'm going to buy it and open it up and put some artic silver 5 thermal paste on the heatsinks, and clean the shit out of the vents.
Another much easier alternative for this particular model is to use compressed air and a shop vac. I bought a used hp dv4 laptop on the mercari app as is for $15 because it had an overheating issue. Fixed it in literally 5 minutes. Yeah probably not the best method, but for a cheap 10 year old laptop, I didn't have much to lose.
I've just got this laptop and i've noticed that where the gpu is at the thermal pad and the aluminum that is to the cpu isn't very helpfull for heat dissipation. aluminum isn't ver good for heat, if it was then you would see it on the cpu to. I removed the thermal pad on the gpu and also the thermal paste on the cpu, put a copper shimmy on the gpu to help the aluminum and termal paste on both sides of the copper shimy and the cpu.. I used artic silver 5 and haven't had heat issues.
Please help! I am using HP Pavilion DV4 1220us laptop. My quick launch buttons werent working properly so i tried to fix it myself. I opened the keyboard cover and tried to clean the inside of it and by mistake some wire came out. Now I am not sure which wire goes whr. Please help me put back the wire in the right socket. thanks!
i need your help:(..i have this part thats hanging that i have no idea where it goes..ive got these same laptop on this video....& also when i turn it on it turns right back off & its plugged ...please help...thank you..
the fan on my dv4 is blowing out cold air when it used to blow out hot air. is that a problem and something to worry about? if so what can i do to fix it? thanks for your help.
I did the same procedure except the thermal paste.. Now my laptop starts and shows the HP logo and shuts down. Can you tell me any thing that could solve my problem. Any clues ?
can someone please help me? i have an HP notebook and i need to clean the fan/air vents out. I can see very bad chunks of lint and dust gathered inside, keeping my laptop from performing correctly. I want to remove the lint/dust, but i do not really know how. I am comfortable with taking some of my computer apart, but i do not want to remove any hardware other than things like the battery. Please help me.
If you've done this and it is still overheating, check your fan (listen) to see if its even starting up. I opened mine up just enough to see the fan and verify that it wasnt starting up even when the temp reached 75 degrees. Now, Im just waiting to get a new fan in the mail to replace it. Hopefully its just the fan that is broken and not something iwith the motherboard that is causing the fan not to start up.
Can you help me with a problem on my dv4 ? I have a black screen with the cap lock button and number lock button that just blinks. I already tried the hard reset still nothing. Thank you for your time.
If you get the no boot, no video with a flashing num lock and Cap Lock take out the Wifi Cards and try booting... if it comes up swap the locations and then see if if boots with that arrangement... I did that once... ;-)
Hello! I dismantled my hp dv5 and now it doesn´t work. When i connect it to the electric plug, the light that says it is on charge turns on, so i think it's not the problem. is there anything that i need to do after the assemble?how can i find what is wrong?
i cleaned my hp dv4 myself because the cooling fan cause annoying sounds and the heats. and now i can't use my usb port.. is there any way to fix or replace the usb port?
@thegamegorilla First thing, you are going to have to make a diagnosis of the issue during the unit's attempt to POST. Wait after powering on the unit to see if the board will generate a POST error code. This can be read by watching the CAPSLOCK and NUMLOCK LEDs: The LED's will flash in a cycle, these are the meanings of those blinks (this is the same for all HP laptops) One Blink is No CPU detected Two is a corrupted BIOS Three is Faulty RAM Four is No GPU detected Five is General Board Fail
@FastVideoTech Yes, the keyboard works well, but now when I press some keys, the keyboard moves down XD. I think the notebook's top doesn't well. But it works very well. Thank you for yor video @FastVideoTech
Hello. i got myself a u3 cooler which has 3 fans that can be placed in the heat points of the computer. could you tell me which are them in the pavilion dv4?
i have this computer, and when i start it up the screen is black, like its having hard time to boot up. i tried to reset the ram doesnt work and i also took out the battery put i the charger and hold the power key for 30s doesnt work. and i dnt have warranty so if i call hp it will cost me but idk how much any ideas on what i can do thanks!
Hey man, I followed all the steps, but now the fan doesn't work, it doesn't even start!! It was properly working before I took apart the laptop. All the connections are OK. I really need your help, I have all the pieces in a table waiting for me to fix the fan!
I cant get my computer to recognize the hard drive. HARD DRIVE DOES NOT EXIST Its the exact same computer you are working on. Ive cleaned it and see no signs of burning on the board or anything. Should I partition it a certain way on my desktop?Do I have to put Drive Protection and HP Recovery on the new hard drive for it to recognize or something? I just formatted NWFT or whatever. What else could it be? Is the controller in the HD or on the board? Thanks
Well that's way more complicated than I thought it would be. Probably not the best idea for my first attempt at opening up my laptop. My fan stopped working a while back and now if I run my computer on anything besides power saver and try to play videos or run a lot of programs it shuts down. Any other options besides this or bringing it in for an expensive repair?
Hey man, I just did this yesterday but when I turned it back on and the screen doesn't come on and the caps lock and number lock flash. Can you help me out?
@FastVideoTech true true, thats what I was thinking but I am not sure, you said you know how to play it?! That is awesome do you know what key it is in?

hey what kind of cmos battery this computer has?
i had a problem with my fan being seriously loud all the time and almost always on, i tried to take it apart but found it way too difficult and didnt want to damage anything (i have little experience with dissambling computers) so i put it all back. Thanks! Now my laptop is running smooth again...
My Gateway has a panel that covers the fan, memory components, and processor, and it is very easy to get to!
I liked this video, it helps me too much.
Only a thing, the keybord was not well now.

You can fix this issue by taking out the following screws:

Excelent video. You saved me money. I did the job myself. Thanks
Hi after doing the whole process i am not getting any display is there any solution ? And the two Lights in the keyboard keeps blinking

i cleaned my hp dv4 myself because the cooling fan cause annoying sounds and the heats. and now i can't use my usb port.. is there any way to fix or replace the usb port?
@thegamegorilla
First thing, you are going to have to make a diagnosis of the issue during the unit's attempt to POST. Wait after powering on the unit to see if the board will generate a POST error code. This can be read by watching the CAPSLOCK and NUMLOCK LEDs:
The LED's will flash in a cycle, these are the meanings of those blinks (this is the same for all HP laptops)
One Blink is No CPU detected
Two is a corrupted BIOS
Three is Faulty RAM
Four is No GPU detected
Five is General Board Fail

Hey man, I followed all the steps, but now the fan doesn't work, it doesn't even start!! It was properly working before I took apart the laptop. All the connections are OK. I really need your help, I have all the pieces in a table waiting for me to fix the fan!
I cant get my computer to recognize the hard drive. HARD DRIVE DOES NOT EXIST
Its the exact same computer you are working on.
