Does anyone remember the final 4 in those days being played in the afternoon.The first game being played at 1 pm and the second game at about 3:30 pm ?
@@johncooper2265 When CBS took the contract over in 1982 the schedule had the semi finals at 3:30 and 6:00 ET. In 1981 when NBC did the last year of coverage games were at (IIRC) 12:45 and 3:15 PM ET. 1988 is when CBS moved the second semi final to prime time and the first game at around 6 PM ET

The only instance I can find of both games going to an area was in 1969 when most of Iowa and a small part of Southern Minnesota which is part of a TV market that includes Iowa got both games. Reason for this was that Iowa was considered an east market BUT Drake University from Des Moines played in a regional that was a West regional. So as a result those areas got the regular game they would have gotten and the Drake game as a game of local interest
Yes. That was with NBC who at the time had all broadcast rights. In 1982 CBS took over and the games started the same time. It wasn’t until the late 80s , the final four games got moved to the mid afternoon, early evening schedule. Funny, CBS has had the final four ever year since 1982.

Burleson was actually 7’2” but the coaches at NC State lied about it so he could be listed as the tallest player in the country. A few years later NC State had a role player named Chuck Nevitt who was a legitimate 7’5”.

Voted #13 as the greatest college basketball game. A lot due to the loss for UCLA. Bill Walton said it was his worse loss. The Wolfpack were dominated by UCLA earlier in the year losing by 18 in St. Louis. The country hated UCLA's dominance so much. UCLA won another title the following year beating Kentucky on the last game John Wooden coached.

Yes those 3 teams were very strong. And the bad thing about it was Maryland was left out of the national tournament because they lost to NC State in the ACC tournament finals and the NCAA only allowed 25 teams in the nationals.

UCLA had a guy on their bench named Pete Trgovich he played high school basketball with NC State Tim Stoddard and they won the state title for East Chicago Washington. And a 3rd member of their state championship team was former NBA player Junior Bridgeman
Stoddard played with NC State who beat Ucla in 74 semis, pitch for Baltimore and White sox. Jr. Played at Louisville and for Bucks with great teams of late 70s early 80S.
2nd high school team in history to place 3 players on Final Four teams. Darnell Adell and rRueben Bailey from that EC Washington team also played D1 ball.
Yes , that East Chicago Washington team won the Indiana state championship in 1971 & undefeated probably the greatest high school basketball team not just in Indiana but the entire nation. Oh by the way East Chicago Roosevelt undefeated won the Indiana state title in 1970.
I remember Thompson taking a horrific fall in the Regional final, and there was some doubt whether he'd be available for the Final Four. Thankfully, he was.
I was 13 years old and that was a strange season for the bruins.They lost a total 4 games and in all of the loses they had substantial leads going down to the end and apparent victories in their grasp but as in all those loses they would beat themselves at the end and thats what happened in this game very uncharacteristic of a Wooden coached team.
RIP Bill Walton. I didn't watch him play much in his NBA career, but I did see this game in 1974, when I was a little kid but I was rooting against him in this game because my fav was David Thompson of North Carolina State. I still remember this game, I watched it at the local YMCA/YWCA. My mother was a director there so we had free passes. It was a great facility for kids. At the time of this game UCLA had won like 88 games straight and many NCAA Championships. They were seen as invincible, but David Thompson had something to say about it. Back then there was a rule against college players dunking the ball, so David Thompson created what was called the alley hoop, I think it was pronounced! It was a game for the ages!
The following year, UCLA returned to the Finals and defeated Kentucky for Coach John Wooden’s 10th and final National Championship in San Diego before retiring.

UCLA was the best team in 74. They had better overall talent than NC State and Notre Dame. They simply gave those games away. After two straight undefeated seasons they basically stopped listening to Wooden. They thought they were invincible. As far as NC State goes I do not think they were even the best team in the ACC. I thought Maryland was the best team. They had 3 future NBA players on that team. John Lucas, Len Elmore, and Tom McMillan.

Dec.1st in a ballyhooed game on NBC that began at 11:30 p.m. in the east, the Terps nearly pulled off the upset, losing 65-64 to UCLA in Pauley Pavilion. Both teams had preseason rankings in the top four, with the Terps the #4 ranked team when that season opened, making for a veritable final four-like pregame hype. Even the N.Y. Times had its reporter Sam Goldaper there, his story couldn't get in the paper until Monday morning.
While Burleson was out in the first half, UCLA outscored NC State 9-5. It probably should have been more lopsided, but the Bruins were cold for the first part of his spell, and Walton played more in a high-post set against Stoddard.
Tim Stoddard....one of only two athletes to play in both a Final Four and a World Series (Kenny Lofton the other). Woody Durham was the Coliseum PA announcer for those games (UNC-CH was official host of the Final Four).
Utterly exhausting game, for the players, spectators and we easy chair viewers. It seemed like it wouldn't end. Finally, a dynasty was forced to pause.
The dynasty was coming to an end anyway. UCLA was no longer getting all of the best players (i.e. David Thompson, etc). But they had Wooden and Sam Gilbert. :)
Such a strange ending too. A totally bogus charging foul that Towe drew in the backcourt that gave the ball back to NC State when UCLA should've gone to the line. Then a phantom 5th foul call on Keith Wilkes. Add to it some sloppy turnovers by UCLA and an appearance that they just didn't care at the end, it's almost as IF they saw that they were fighting 5 on 7 & then just decided to throw the game.
I was 15... and hyped! We knew the " get back " for St. Louis being in Greensboro would be trouble for them, but...what a war. Thought it would be easier.

Thompson was maybe the 4th best college players I ever say. Jabbar, Walton, and Bird were all better but Thompson was up there. Nothing Thompson did as a pro hinted that he would have been better then Jordan or LeBron.

No it is not. When Jordan and Lebron ere at the age Thompson was before his problems they were already much better basketball players then he ever was. I am a Thompson fan and think he was great but to think he ever showed anything that would conclude he would be a top 7 player ever ( which both Lebron and Jordan are ) is just wrong. They both did everything better then Thompson.
I've been a #UCLA fan since 1979. I love #bigred, but he can go with that bs about Tommy Curtis costing them this game. NC State was bigger, more athletic, and better, period.
Kinda disappointing. Jamaal Wilks was one of the best at moving without the Ball around the basket and Bill Walton was one of the best at finding the open cutter. But it just doesn't happen here. Perhaps Wooden mispositioned Walton and should've placed Walton at the top of the key to distribute the ball to guys cutting to the basket like Magic did for Jamaal and Walton did for Larry Legend.
I live in the UK and listened to this game on AFRTS radio broadcast out of AFN in Germany. I still have an audio recording of the 2nd overtime. Just found this on TH-cam today. Great memories....

NC State wanted publicity for having the tallest college basketball player of the time and lied about his true height. Burleson even made the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. The cover read "Year of the New Giants" and falsely said that Tommy was 7 ft 4 instead of his true height of 7 ft 2. Look it up
Whatever his real height, Burleson was fired up because Robert Elmore was made 1st team All ACC center. Burleson came out in each introduction in the ACC tourney, and the NCAA tourney that way to make the point he felt he was the best center in the conference.

Remember this day vividly. I was eight years old and had my front teeth broken from a hockey stick earlier in the day. Watched this game while convalescing in discomfort.
I always thought that this UCLA team was every bit as good as the '73 team. But they stumbled against Notre Dame , Oregon and Oregon St. and that took a little of the shine off them. NC State was a little better. The played and beat all the opposition in a tough conference. They deserved the national championship.
John Wooden had many virtues as a coach, but he was not a gracious loser or even a realistic loser. He went to his grave claiming that UCLA should have won, but NC State beat them fair and square. They had an amazing team.
I didn't know he was a sore loser. He is probably right UCLA should had won the game, they blew a 7 point lead in overtime and an 11 point lead during the game. Also you'd think with all of John Wooden's philosphies on life and basketball he would had handled losing better.

It’s a shame about the Terps,although I think UCLA was the best,they could have very easily won the whole thing…..people say wait a min UCLA the best? I like how David Meyer‘s hit that shot at the end of the half. Your average three-pointer in the NBA today and Kurt Gowdy goes nuts! Times they were a changing.
UCLA outscored N.C. State 8-6 while Thompson was out at the end of the first half. Again, the Bruins did not take full advantage of the mismatch. Pre-shot clock, Sloan helped the Pack’s by ordering the four-corners offense for most of the last 1:15.
Consolation games were played through 1981. And the last 3rd place game was played while President Reagan was in surgery after being shot earlier that day
I don't think I watched this game at age 14, but just finished watching it. Boy, did they call traveling tight, and I'm really glad they eventually put in a shot clock. I'm a Bill Walton fan, so it hurt to see Tom Burleson hold his own against him. Burleson went on a run in the second half that gave NC State a chance later on. The next year, Burleson was in Seattle and Walton was in Portland, so the rivalry continued. Walton didn't play much his rookie year, had long hair and supposedly hang out with Patty Hearst. He seemed like a train wreck. I remember my uncle, a Sonic fan, saying that he wouldn't trade Burleson for Walton straight across. Luckily for Portland, Walton put it together for a season, I don't remember what happened to Tom. State had a great team, but I really think it was UCLA's game, but they could never put the Wolfpack away, too many bad passes.

Ford throwing the ceremonial pitch, hit #714 to tie Babe Ruth on Thurs, Apr. 4 then a controversy took over if I remember it right the commissioner said Aaron shouldn't be kept out of the two weekend road games, anyway Atlanta returned for its Monday night home opener on NBC, they would usually start their Summer Monday Night Baseball series in June, but NBC made a special exception for that night because of its potential record breaking significance.
I went to the semifinals in 1971, and then the championship game,I think that was the last year that they played the semis on a Thursday night,then the championship on sat afternoon
That was the Howard Porter ( Villanova ) Jim McDaniels ( WkU ) matchup. That was a 2 OT game and up till then the greatest game in NCAA history ( IMO )

I love the commercials included in this video. Do you realize this game was played at the old Greensboro Coliseum ? A final four in that classic old barn - Amazing. Then UCLA has to turn around and play a 3d place game the next day, which they lost - can you blame them ?

@Freddie Last See Wooden's interview with Charlie Rose. Wooden believed the reason UCLA lost to NC State is because he could at times be stuborn using timeout's. I believe it was Meyers himself who believed he should have been guarding Thompson. In the 1970 championship Sydney Wicks insisted that Wooden let him gaurd Artis Gilmore, and Wooden consented. UCLA won.
I remember seeing this game and thinking how it could have happened? In viewing it again, it looks like UCLA couldn't get a break from either of the two refs. There is no question that Burleson committed 4 clear fouls AFTER he had picked up his fourth. NC State was also well-versed in "flopping", especially Stoddard and Towe. I was no fan of the UCLA "dynasty", however, they deserved better officiating in this game.

In fact, I had sort of jumped on the Wolfpack bandwagon by the time this game was played after witnessing the unbelievable exploits of David Thompson throughout the tournament. I just hate to see a game of this magnitude being influenced by bad officiating.
What if they had to play by these rules today, ? No shot clock . No stopping the clock after a basket . No 3 pt. basket. Best of all, no slam dunk. That got to be so uncivilized. NC State was undefeated the year before and so was UCLA. NC State was ineligible because of a recruiting violation to get David Thompson. It paid off in 1974. I am being turned off by all sports today. It's all about the money.
Thank God the NCAA came to their senses and came up with a shot clock and allowed dunking. Dean Smith had the Godforsaken "Four Corners" offense, which was a BS way to play but it provided plenty of wins. It ultimately led to a shot clock. Note - I am a 1976 UNC graduate. :)

This was also only the second year that what we now know as the Final Four took place Saturday and Monday. Before that it was Thursday and Saturday.

David Thompson was listed as 6'4, but he admittedly is 6'2 1/2.
Marques Johnson only gets 9 minutes in this game. UCLA would have won if he played more. They won the next year with him as the hero.

This is 2020. I am 66 now and I remember watching that game at my friend's (Ken Tosi) house. I had always hated UCLA and Austin Carr made my day!

And how's this for unlikely?!?! Both Stoddard and Lofton went to the same high school, EC Washington, in East Chicago, Indiana.
And they both played in a high school basketball final four as well. Stoddard won all 3 and Lofton lost all 3

Utterly exhausting game, for the players, spectators and we easy chair viewers. It seemed like it wouldn't end. Finally, a dynasty was forced to pause.
The dynasty was coming to an end anyway. UCLA was no longer getting all of the best players (i.e. David Thompson, etc). But they had Wooden and Sam Gilbert. :)
Such a strange ending too. A totally bogus charging foul that Towe drew in the backcourt that gave the ball back to NC State when UCLA should've gone to the line. Then a phantom 5th foul call on Keith Wilkes. Add to it some sloppy turnovers by UCLA and an appearance that they just didn't care at the end, it's almost as IF they saw that they were fighting 5 on 7 & then just decided to throw the game.

Thompson was maybe the 4th best college players I ever say. Jabbar, Walton, and Bird were all better but Thompson was up there.
Nothing Thompson did as a pro hinted that he would have been better then Jordan or LeBron.

No it is not. When Jordan and Lebron ere at the age Thompson was before his problems they were already much better basketball players then he ever was.
I am a Thompson fan and think he was great but to think he ever showed anything that would conclude he would be a top 7 player ever ( which both Lebron and Jordan are ) is just wrong. They both did everything better then Thompson.

I've been a #UCLA fan since 1979. I love #bigred, but he can go with that bs about Tommy Curtis costing them this game. NC State was bigger, more athletic, and better, period.
Kinda disappointing. Jamaal Wilks was one of the best at moving without the Ball around the basket and Bill Walton was one of the best at finding the open cutter. But it just doesn't happen here. Perhaps Wooden mispositioned Walton and should've placed Walton at the top of the key to distribute the ball to guys cutting to the basket like Magic did for Jamaal and Walton did for Larry Legend.

NC State wanted publicity for having the tallest college basketball player of the time and lied about his true height. Burleson even made the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. The cover read "Year of the New Giants" and falsely said that Tommy was 7 ft 4 instead of his true height of 7 ft 2. Look it up
Whatever his real height, Burleson was fired up because Robert Elmore was made 1st team All ACC center. Burleson came out in each introduction in the ACC tourney, and the NCAA tourney that way to make the point he felt he was the best center in the conference.

Remember this day vividly. I was eight years old and had my front teeth broken from a hockey stick earlier in the day. Watched this game while convalescing in discomfort.
I always thought that this UCLA team was every bit as good as the '73 team. But they stumbled against Notre Dame , Oregon and Oregon St. and that took a little of the shine off them. NC State was a little better. The played and beat all the opposition in a tough conference. They deserved the national championship.
John Wooden had many virtues as a coach, but he was not a gracious loser or even a realistic loser. He went to his grave claiming that UCLA should have won, but NC State beat them fair and square. They had an amazing team.
I didn't know he was a sore loser. He is probably right UCLA should had won the game, they blew a 7 point lead in overtime and an 11 point lead during the game. Also you'd think with all of John Wooden's philosphies on life and basketball he would had handled losing better.

You don't spend the last 36 years of your life complaining about it. Especially when you've got ten national championship banners. His obsession with losing that game is unflattering and disturbing.

It’s a shame about the Terps,although I think UCLA was the best,they could have very easily won the whole thing…..people say wait a min UCLA the best? Anybody with a little honesty could tell they were better than nc state,they beat themselves,by the way isn’t it funny Wooden never got up or gets up during the game,now coaches runnin around acting nuts,yes it’s different and I for one think not for the better….. When DT returned (v. Pitt; Regionals in Raleigh) with a bandaged head, REYNOLDS COLISEUM went nuts. Even TB (7’ 4”) did an around the back layup.

I like how David Meyer‘s hit that shot at the end of the half. Your average three-pointer in the NBA today and Kurt Gowdy goes nuts! Times they were a changing.

I don't think I watched this game at age 14, but just finished watching it. Boy, did they call traveling tight, and I'm really glad they eventually put in a shot clock. I'm a Bill Walton fan, so it hurt to see Tom Burleson hold his own against him. Burleson went on a run in the second half that gave NC State a chance later on. The next year, Burleson was in Seattle and Walton was in Portland, so the rivalry continued. Walton didn't play much his rookie year, had long hair and supposedly hang out with Patty Hearst. He seemed like a train wreck. I remember my uncle, a Sonic fan, saying that he wouldn't trade Burleson for Walton straight across. Luckily for Portland, Walton put it together for a season, I don't remember what happened to Tom. State had a great team, but I really think it was UCLA's game, but they could never put the Wolfpack away, too many bad passes.
Burleson started out really well ,averaged 15 a game his second year but an injury in year 3 derailed his career.

Ford throwing the ceremonial pitch, hit #714 to tie Babe Ruth on Thurs, Apr. 4 then a controversy took over if I remember it right the commissioner said Aaron shouldn't be kept out of the two weekend road games, anyway Atlanta returned for its Monday night home opener on NBC, they would usually start their Summer Monday Night Baseball series in June, but NBC made a special exception for that night because of its potential record breaking significance.

That was the Howard Porter ( Villanova ) Jim McDaniels ( WkU ) matchup. That was a 2 OT game and up till then the greatest game in NCAA history ( IMO )
1972 was the last year of Thursday night semis and Saturday afternoon championship game.

My vote for Greatest College Basketball Game of All-Time, I remember watching this on TV and then going down the street in my neighborhood with a buddy to play on an 8' goal. I love the commercials included in this video. Do you realize this game was played at the old Greensboro Coliseum ? A final four in that classic old barn - Amazing. Then UCLA has to turn around and play a 3d place game the next day, which they lost - can you blame them ?

State played in the greatest ever game played in the NCAA only two weeks earlier in the Sat. night, March 9th ACC tournament championship game over Maryland in overtime 103-100.
Coach Wooden took responsibility for the loss. He believed that he made a coaching error, but he would never say what it was.
Wooden later said that he should've had David Meyers guarding Thompson.
@Freddie Last See Wooden's interview with Charlie Rose. Wooden believed the reason UCLA lost to NC State is because he could at times be stuborn using timeout's. I believe it was Meyers himself who believed he should have been guarding Thompson. In the 1970 championship Sydney Wicks insisted that Wooden let him gaurd Artis Gilmore, and Wooden consented. UCLA won.
Dave Myers would have been in way over his head. No way could he have guarded DT.
I remember seeing this game and thinking how it could have happened? In viewing it again, it looks like UCLA couldn't get a break from either of the two refs. There is no question that Burleson committed 4 clear fouls AFTER he had picked up his fourth. NC State was also well-versed in "flopping", especially Stoddard and Towe. I was no fan of the UCLA "dynasty", however, they deserved better officiating in this game.

In fact, I had sort of jumped on the Wolfpack bandwagon by the time this game was played after witnessing the unbelievable exploits of David Thompson throughout the tournament. I just hate to see a game of this magnitude being influenced by bad officiating.

What if they had to play by these rules today, ? No shot clock . No stopping the clock after a basket . No 3 pt. basket. Best of all, no slam dunk. That got to be so uncivilized.
NC State was undefeated the year before and so was UCLA. NC State was ineligible because of a recruiting violation to get David Thompson. It paid off in 1974.
I am being turned off by all sports today. It's all about the money.

Thank God the NCAA came to their senses and came up with a shot clock and allowed dunking. Dean Smith had the Godforsaken "Four Corners" offense, which was a BS way to play but it provided plenty of wins. It ultimately led to a shot clock. Note - I am a 1976 UNC graduate. :)
@@GGE47 State got on probation because he played in a pickup game with a State asst. coach and a unc (I believe it was a FB player) was playing and told Smith and he turned them in.
