Scott, this was super helpful! I love the idea of saved tab groups. I've also been using the Astirna New Tab extension for a while, and it really helps keep my browsing organized.
@@Simpletivityit's actually given me recognition of how many unnecessary tabs I was keeping open 'just in case'. I set up a an additional group called 'Occasional' which separates out from the everyday essentials groups and keeps both my browser and my mind clearer.
Group tabs will NEVER replace bookmarks for many reasons. So, use groups tabs for most used sites you like, not youtube cause autoplay, but don't delete your bookmarks at all like this man said in this video.
thanks a bunch for this one Scott! I'd seen the feature, saved a group, but when relaunched Chrome it was gone. I didn't realize it went to the Toolbar ... 🙄 ...
Thanks so much Scott for teaching me about Chrome Tab groups! Now I have different groups for different tasks, and open up different groups in different browser windows, which really helps me focus and avoid distractions while I'm working on the task at hand.
Great video!!! I do have one question maybe you can help with. In my work environment I have tons of bookmarks. I have organized them into 9 Tab groups but only 4 are showing in the Bookmarks Bar. I have to click the right arrows to see the rest. Obviously this isn't terrible but my OCD would love to see all of my Tab Groups across the Bookmarks Bar. I was hoping you might know of a way to stretch the "Tab group real estate space" further to the right. I moved all of my bookmarks from the Bookmark Bar to "Other bookmarks" in hopes that would solve it but it didn't. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond..
Love your videos - so well explained - quick and concise. I was very excited about this. I set up three tab groups - fantastic. HOWEVER, if you're in a tab and you start to surf, then Chrome saves the last place you surfed to in your tab group. Later, when I open up my "Productivity" tab for example, it has a random book website I went to via a surfing session instead of my Trello workflow. The worst part is that, after setting up my tab groups and feeling ridiculously excited, I deleted the sites in those new tab groups from my bookmarks bar. Now it's a mission to find them. Have I gone about this the wrong way? What have I missed? Please help!
It's true that these groups are dynamic and can change based on where you browse to if within a tab. Therefore, I recommend only using these tabs for specific sites and use other tabs for surfing. In addition, you may want to keep some of your bookmarks just for reference.
Thanks. Will definitely be saving my bookmarks again. The tabs tool is neat though. Thanks letting us all know these things. Really interesting as well as helpful.
Great but when you reopen chrome the tab groups are always all open and you have no more space ! is that possible that they are closed when you reopen chrome ? Many thanks in advance !!!
Hey Scott, helpful video. Suggestion: Add a caveat that if you click on the tab "X" to close the tab, you're actually removing the tab from the group. If you do that for al of the group tabs, the group disappears forever. I learned this the hard way! 😖😖
Don't make the mistake and put youtube in a tab group with a current video open and running. It will stay in this tab group for ever and ever. And the video will start playing instantly as soon as you open the tab group. If you are multi device user with Chrome sync on it will definitely play automatically on every single device you have, where Chrome is installed. Gosh, I liked the idea to put TH-cam in a social tab group, but I had to remove it and leave it as a single tab. Edit: And if you are used to links that you are going to open within a tab group - this may be a catastrophy as well. Opening a link from a tab group may cause opening the link on all your devices. And even if you quickly close the new tab, it may reappear.
I seem to have hit the limit of tab groups. I use them to organize several deployment activities and have so many that the list of them scrolls off screen. Is there a magic way to organize tab groups that allows me to have more than the 40-ish I already have? Only 4 of my groups are displayed on my bookmarks bar, the rest are on a hidden menu that appears when I hover over the ">>" icon to the right of those 4, and that menu is now as tall as my screen :(
Hi Scott. Thanks for this. I just starting using the tab groups because I've really enjoyed using them in Safari. How do you stop the autoplay feature when using these groups? When I open Chrome after restarting the computer. All of the tab groups start playing audio and continue to play even if I "collapse" them. Thanks.
There isn't a setting specifically to stop autoplay in Chrome tab groups. However, you can try the following workarounds: Disable Autoplay: Go to chrome://settings/content/sound. Under "Sound," select "Don't allow sites to automatically play sound." Use a Browser Extension: There are extensions like "Turn Off the Lights" that can help manage autoplay behavior. Additional Tips: Close Tabs: Closing tabs that are actively playing audio will stop the sound. Mute Tabs: Right-click on a tab and select "Mute site" to temporarily silence it.
@@Simpletivity Thanks. I did the steps to turn off allow sites to play sound but did not "use a browser extension" because I didn't understand that. It permanently muted my music videos in a saved tab group. If I close the tabs in a tab group, what is the point of having the group? This has not been an issue in Safari.
Thanks for this Scott. At your recommendation video about One-Tab, I used that but tabs are literally taking up to 5 minutes to open, I’m not talking about the full open, I’m saying that when I click ‘restore’ it takes 5 minutes to even have the tabs start popping up. Have you had this issue or do you just group them using this method now? Thanks brother
Thanks for your feedback, Scott. It does seem that since their last update in June, OneTab has been a lot slower. On top of that, they do not support this new Tab Group feature yet. You may want to check out TabXpert as an alternative.
@@Simpletivity Will check into it, you haven’t steered me wrong yet! 😀, also I am now paying for Get Magical after seeing your vid a few years ago, absolutely love that too, but it is slow to open also, switched to Text Expander. Thanks for reply
When clicking links from grouped tabs, newly opened tabs are automatically added to the group. Is there a way to stop it (i.e. newly opened tabs will be at a new window, or the same window but at a different group)?
Out of sight, out of mind. This is a horrible feature for ADHD. Do you want me to open my email 5 different times because I forget it's already open in a group? Cause that's exactly what is going to happen. :D VIVA LA TABS AND BOOKMARKS FOR LIFE! Also do not delete your bookmarks. Then you can't export them in the future when you realize you want to change browsers or share them with someone (like new hires who need to spin up quick with all the sites we use daily for work).

Thank you for the tip; I'd seen that "save group" toggle, but I didn't know what it does (probably because I always hide my bookmark bar)

Yes, for sure

Hi Scott, thx for you video. Is it possible to open Google and the see the Tab groups at a glance. So you don't have to open up a new tab to see them?
Other than having them listed in your Bookmarks Bar, I'm not aware of another way to view the inside of a Tab Group without expanding it.

That's a very good thing to point out. Thanks for sharing!
It distroys the whole purpose of grouping. Bookmarks never go away if I accidently close the tab.
Thank you! I have saved many groups, however I would like to sort them alphabetically like I did the standalone bookmarks. Is that possible?
You can always drag and drop them into any order you like. I hope that helps!
Thank you! 😊
