      For the most part, you're right. I've come across a few sellers that have good mystery boxes.

      That is true to a degree. The difference is in who you buy them from. The KEY is to buy them from collectors and shops who are over stocked with comics they haven't even had time to go through yet. Where it's not that they can't sell them, it's that they simply took on too many collections and need to reduce their inventory. This is when your mystery box will be full of great valuable books.
      Also, if you buy mystery boxes off ebay or whatnot, talk to the seller before you buy. Let them know that you'll be interested in buying from them IF they can includes X, Y ,Z titles or characters in your box. Most will help you out, some won't. But asking never hurts, and I have yet to do business with anyone who refused.

    As a seller on the app I do my best to convince the higher ups to take this more seriously and crack down on scams like this. It hurts everyone when they let them run rampant like they do.
    For reference I mostly do singles. very rarely I will do “mystery” boxes which are put together on stream while bidding is live so people can see what they bid on and the buyers know it will mostly be fillers. Typically they go for about $.20-$.50 a book with discounted shipping.

    I deal with a few good sellers that tend to have good quality books but the rest are nothing but lazy sellers. They put up signs to look at the BIN and there is no action on screen. There is also the huckster/carnival barkers that yell all the time or blast loud music while we have to look at there faces as they talk forever. Not sure what WHATNOT is turning into other than an online version of a flea market.

    I used to enjoy doing like 4 or 5 mystery pulls on whatnot a month, between like $3, $5, to $10 bucks, did it for months. Everytime I got normal book or even a real shit book, I paid and it showed up. there's been about 3 times now where I won an over $100 book, and every single time, the book never shows up, I open the app and the charge is like secretly missing or disappears or like wasn't processed... like I'm done with it. One was a 1st taskmaster slab, 1 was like a X-men at the Texas state fair which is book I've wanted for a long time.... There's too many sellers on what not for me to ever report or do anything about it because I can't remember the vendors or name of the show. And it's not like a CC problem because again it works fine the next week. Not sure if it makes a difference, but I've about 3 times bought magic cards, hit some pretty decent and that card did show up.

    • @williamhammock4821
      @williamhammock4821 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also to note, I've hit like 2 grails books from Instagram seller mystery boxes, so I'm not like totally anti mystery box... but I see like what happening with sport cards, where they ensuring the best cards go to influencers who do live openings (more rigged than the McDonalds Monopoly game) and if that ever comes to comic books, that will be a very sad day indeed.

    It’s like they do with EBay, sellers get their buddy’s on their shows to bring up the prices. You’ll end up paying way more for something you could have gotten for 4.99

  • @bobtrottier8178

    Brutha ya ALWAYS gotta ask the entire set of rules with these mystery box things as there's ALWAYS FINE PRINT somewhere. I tend to avoid that stuff unless I know the seller very well. Mystery boxes are well known fluff dumps with crazy odds to hit a big book. Sucks it went down like that,but at least you got a refund and apology.

    From what I can tell by watching other youtube channels most of the people who buy a mystery box are not satisfied with the content of the box. Often one don´t even gets the value of what was paid for such a mystery box or the content of such a box is totally not interesting to collect. One good example is the Comic Tom Mystery Box.

    Stay away from the mystery bags. Junk ninja funk books. I payed $150 for a IronMan 282 near mint with no spine ticks just a really clean book from some guys selling books from their comic shop, when I got the book it had like 8 spine ticks the back cover had a rip along the spine and there was fixing on the back and on pages. They refused to let me return it and whatnot never responded . Deleted whatnot after that so be careful

  • @AnthonyOldhandGarcia
    @AnthonyOldhandGarcia ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You did well on calling the seller out on it and happy the seller gave you a refund. It seems as though the seller didn't know what he was doing as far as lack of knowledge of two different comicbook publishers or tries to scam buyers to get his way or maybe had done this before to other buyers, either way he was on the wrong for doing that.
    Your best bet is to take your business elsewhere and glad you didn't take the seller's offer on free items to make up the "mistake" he pulled to try to keep you happy as a customer in order for you to go back on his Whatnot channel to continue in support of him, maybe this time he won't pull this again on anyone if that's the case.

    I never do the mystery boxes, I would rather pay FMV for a book then risk it with that stuff. This is a prime example of a guy that was a scam, not even mislead IMO, they know the book isn't worth $190, it even raises the question if they planned on really giving out a marvel key.

  • @kegman83
    @kegman83 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In general I'm not even remotely sure of the legality of what occurred to you. There's a ton of weird federal and state laws when it comes to raffles and tickets, and way more laws when it comes to bait and switches. I've noticed from my experience, these attempts at pumping up the bids (with what essentially is gambling) always end up badly for the bidder. You'll end up buying some book you didnt want for 10-20% more.
    And never ever believe a Whatnot streamer what his opinion on value is. If someone says this book is $190 in value, and you know for a fact a CGC copy sells for something way different, thats FRAUD. Its one thing to do that with raw books, but CGC comics have hard, traceable and public values. If you have a recording of the stream, you can walk down to small claims today. But no one records whatnot streams, so this scam keeps happening.
    Stop spending money on mystery bundles. Some of the higher population rooms almost are guaranteed to have straw bidders that pump on the price, and these sorts of raffles really should be illegal. Stick to small population rooms and sellers you trust. Never buy from this guy again.
