Been a Metallica fan for 38 years now a Miley fan for a week... Wow!!! I think it's the imperfections of this live performance that add emotion and rawness. The first part of this with James explaining how he was nervous bring this vulnerable song to his badass group, and Miley related how when she did this for the first time at Glastonbury, her marriage was done and divorce was planned, her house was burned to the ground in the California fires while she was filming in Africa so nothing was saved... the only thing she had left in her life was her music, that performance to prove herself, and this song to do it with. Nothing else mattered.

Even though they've gone digital now like most touring bands seem to be, James was notorious for using a Roland JC-120 for their clean tones for years. So that chorus-y sound is all over everything they do clean. Such a textbook Metallica sound. Also, James played this solo on the record and has always played it live as far as I'm aware. Great reaction video Michael. It should be mentioned that Stern had Elton John join the broadcast right before they played this. Apparently Elton played the intro on piano on a new recording he made of it with Metallica. Elton opined that this song was one of the most beautiful songs of all time, on par with Greensleeves. Needless to say, that floored James. See the segment here: th-cam.com/video/wofWGD5TUxo/w-d-xo.html

I love how your eyes shine and sparkle when listening to music! :o) And I agree, Miley is phenomenal (and a pleasure without any guilt). Could be a fantastic rockstar if she only wanted to and felt the need to go this path.

System of a Down has a lot of great stuff that you were talking about.. the metal and then straight into the clean tone. Love your videos man!

SOAD are masters when it comes to that. They switch so extreme and seamlessly from metal to clean without the songs falling apart.

I understood him as meaning the Lars plays clean tones with full force.
Like this song is mostly all clean. but hes still banging on the drums, open hi hat and all.
John Dolmayan (SOAD) definitely adjusts his parts to the song

When the song started, I was not sure about this version. I felt like it didn't start very well and I wasn't into Miley's voice in the beginning. However, by the end I left wanting to hear more Miley singing Metallica. Her "scream" voice actually fits metal songs really well. I'd even like to hear her work with some other classic metal bands.

This was exactly my reaction, I listened to the first couple lines and went "nah mate, that's bland as hell" and turned it off. My friend insisted I listen through to the end and wouldn't be disappointed... she was hella right.

I thought it looked like a new (to him) axe, but I didn't know it's Peter Green's Les Paul. Should have recognized that sound, it's rather distinctive because of the out of phase wiring.

"I realize I'm in the single-coil thing... and the tone isn't there...." Your tone is perfect if you're doing the country version of the song. "Deal with it!" Sounds great, Chet!

I thank you for saying Hetfield is hands down the best rock/metal guitarist of all time! He really is and was my inspiration to pick up a guitar 32 years ago when I was 12!!!! 1988’s heaviest album they ever put out. The sound of it!!!!!!!!! And Justice for All!!!!!
