The occasional bleakness is not at all relieved by the inability to pour tea! Drenching of sloppings of milk followed by hardly a thimble of tea! This is, otherwise, quite a gem! Thank you very much!
No divorce and no jobs for women. The workforce was for men. When you let one person dictate the Bible for you, and I'm sure that there were men who disagreed with him, but the family was sacred, and no one wanted to interfere. I read where a famous doctor, at that time, ended his research book on illegitimate children by advising women to develop their skills so they could take care of themselves and their children rather than just live for love. Those were women who ended up on the streets. All kinds of answers to life, including Marxism, and still we have problems.
Possibly an exaggerated view of religious dictatorship, except that it is all too true. Money, religion, mind control. But hope lurks at the core of personal character. a lot to say for independent thinking.
I’ve known families headed by even more tyrannical, controlling people - male AND female, none of whom were religious in the slightest. Horrible people will leverage whatever lies at hand.
Religious or not, they' re first a human being a person with flaws just like us. To be a true Follower of Christ religious band laypeople like any others who r not religious, we must follow instructions and the will of God first and above all. But a human got weaknesses sometimes the one great weaknesses is thinking holier than thou kind of attitude and ITV's so painful to bear to be with. We need the courage and strength to be brave not to be nauseated by it all.
At around 21.00, Mr Tate is wasting his time trying to appeal to his prospective father-in-law's better nature, for none exists. What Mr Tate ought to do is to whisk his girl away from that place & never look back. Other suitors should do the same with the sisters. The mother could split her time between each new household. Thus, the old bigot would be left to dwell on mistakes he alone has made. Naturally, so-called Victorian respectability prevented such action. It's just a pity they couldn't see a bit further & that, in a few years, they'd all be dead; much the sooner putting up with patriarchal rot. From this gentleman's standpoint, I find the whole process absolutely abhorrent. No one is 100% equal, but fairness should be in place for all; before it's too late. A good adaptation, for which many thanks for the upload 👍.
Yes well, they are professional actors. Just as they represent folk of another age, of different politics and other religious conviction, they need not actually be the age of the roles they portray! We are capable of understanding what they represent.
@@TheRobynbrown Yes. Nothing like having a pointless young actress just to comply with the characters age. The lady was not Palpatine in the role of a young lady...

This actress has a resemblance to Susan Hayward...
Why didn't one of them put bromie in his tea to shut up the crazy father 😮
How can it be allowed that one person terrorize everyone else in the family? A patriarchal nightmare.

Religion, not faith . Very different things

The function of religion is oppression. Religion is a man made construct to control other people. There is no God, there are only charlatans.
Never miss an opportunity to bash religion. Check 😅
3:09 I’ve never seen a baby carried that low!
One of the ridiculous things they always do in films.
Perhaps she has extremely short legs

All I can think about is that there is no guard under the curb chain on the horse‘s bit. Primitive.
Are the birds in the house?! The noise is ridicules.the windows seem to be closed but you still hear those birds!!
They are sheep
The English country side is rather noisy, and I love it. Sheep, birds 🐦 🐦⬛, crickets, bees 🐝.

Can you leave the automated subtitles on. It really makes a difference
You can turn on closed captions by tapping screen, and in right-hand top corner, tap on box that says CC.

She is 15 years too old to play this role. Too bad.
Yes. She was really only 28 years old when her mother died.
Yes i thought she didnt look in the right age range for that time period in her life

Making a religion of soothing one's parents' fears has destroyed more lives than all other calamities combined.
Sorry but she looked way too old for the lad. In fact she looks more like his mum.
I'm loving this but some of the unwed daughter's look a little long in the tooth, and the terrible overdone make-up doesn't help!
Isnt that a funny saying. Long in the tooth 😅

What an odd choice, to refer to real women, in 2024, using the language of farmers selling and buying livestock at market! Goodness me.
