    I agree, it's an excellent knife. I didn't like the sheath design, however -- the plastic insert was really easy to miss when sheathing the knife, and getting outside it means cutting the sheath. I found an excellent replacement sheath from JRE Industries. Their size N sheath fits the Nord perfectly. I can come right- or left-handed, with or without a fire steel loop, and with or without a dangler. JRE makes amazing sheaths, they make the sheaths for LT Wright knives as well. Nice review, thank you!

    Thank you for reviewing the Nord. I've been researching and certainly think Helle knives are some of the most beautiful, especially the Nord. Now I know how good it is in the field, I will be buying one asap. I'll also use your advice and give it a full scandi grind for improved feathering. Thank you.

    thanks for sharing your content. love helle's style and quality finish on both their steel and their wood. though they don't make it easy to choose a knife. utvaer seems a bit small for my hand, nord seems perfect, but then you lose the unique pommel from the utvaer. and i don't think they ship left handed sheaths to america. i'll have to choose one eventually, hope you are all still enjoying the outdoors!

      You are welcome! I really like the Nord. It is a great design and good handle. Also for some light chopping work. Try to get in contact with them to find out if they can ship you a left handed sheet. Good luck and thanks for watching! Cheers!😁👍

    The sheath should have the plastic lining more completely covering the inside. A friend of mine cut the sheath inserting it but is going to pay half the cost for getting a new one. I have a great tactical sheath to put it in. A Remington made in Italy

    Hi Guys, where does the Nord sit in your list of best knives?

    • @westcoastbushcrafters
      @westcoastbushcrafters  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Nice question 👍 I guess when we put our best 20 knives in a line the Nord will be at place 8 or 9 to be honest. This is based on that those others are easier to feather stick with. Nord is often with me on a trip when making a fire and do some outdoor cooking. The big blade and stainless steel makes it very suitable for making fire and light chopping. Great spine. Besides, I think it looks very cool and beautiful. Nice design.

      @westcoastbushcrafters  ปีที่แล้ว

      @gsrossco The Nord is a very nice knife. I bought it at the same day it got released and had nothing to remark on the final touches but we heard some people had some problems. Maybe the production had to increase and influenced the quality?
      Good idea about making a top 10. Our knife collection expands every year and the top 10 changes most likely with that as well. A top 10 in 2024 will be fun to make😁. I think the LT Wright Illuminous 5 is on top of our list at the moment. Thanks a lot! We wish you also all the best for 2024! Take care😁👍

    I have two Helle knives. Alden(my favourite Helle) and the Eggen. Helle dont use the latest greatest steels but they do great work with the steel they use.
    I have A LOT of knives. BRKT, Fallkniven etc. One thing that strikes me with Helle is that they have the most comfy handles of almost any high end fixed blades out there. Really comfortable big wooden handles that fill your hand really nice.
    A Helle Alden or maybe also the Gaupe in 3V would be my dream fixed blade..

    Having the newer Sandvik stainless steel (14C28N) is huge upgrade compared to other Helle knifes and an ordinary stainless steel knife. Wish thy also made one with a 95 mm long blade and same handle size (any of skookum or woodlore or bushlore style of blade geometry). The spine seems great! Handle and blade seem great!

    I own the helle utvaer, I think the nord is a bit too big for me because I also carry an axe.
    In my opinion the utvaer is better because it does not have a 90° spine which is nice if you want to carve or use your thumb on the spine. It has a scraper on the back of the knife which I really like and works very well with a fire steel.
    If you do not carry an axe than the nord would probably be better.

    • @westcoastbushcrafters
      @westcoastbushcrafters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah those are different knives with different qualities in their own field. We always use gloves when carving. Helps when the spine is sharp. I think it has very cool dimensions for a big knife 😁👍 cheers!

    Helle's website in FAQ says :Question. "Can I use my Helle knife for batoning?"
    Answer. "We prefer that you do not. Especially if the knife has a stick tang construction. Done right batoning can be done with most of our blades, but even with small mistakes it is easy to chip the edge, crack the handle or even break the blade. Either way it is important to know the limits of your knife and the fact that we don’t replace knives broken by batoning through our lifetime warranty." DId you know this?

    • @westcoastbushcrafters
      @westcoastbushcrafters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Didn’t know it but not surprised either. Helle has to earn money as a company and batoning is quite rough for knives. Can imagine they would not want to include that under warranty. Nord is full tang. Can withstand a nice amount of force what we have seen. Chipping luckily no experience with on this knife. Only damaged once one knife really bad during batoning. Learned from it. If you are worried, use an axe😁👍

      I bought a Nord as soon as they came out, and took it camping right away. I have batoned plenty of dead branches for starting fires, and it did really well with that. I haven't split any proper logs with it, because I carry an axe for that. I am sure that it would split some decent sized logs in a survival situation if I didn't have my axe with me, but in a normal hiking/camping/fieldcraft situation, I do have the axe in my pack. The Nord has a full tang, and is very, very sharp. The steel probably isn't as strong as 1095 or A2, so I don't think that it is meant for heavy batoning, but it is much harder than those steels, and holds a wickedly sharp edge for a long time, so it seems to slice through wood more than wedge it apart.

    • @-o-The-Duke-o-
      @-o-The-Duke-o- ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was exactly what every knife mfr ought to have on their site. Batoning with your knife is a last ditch effort to survive. If you have no other choice then have at it. Who goes out into the woods without an a few axes? Your kit needs an ax. Do not put your family's life at risk because you wanted to show off.

    No doubt, Helle knives are superior quality. On the other hand, they're way overpriced. For the same price you get a Lionsteel knife, for the 2/3 of the price you buy a Joker Nomad. 14C28 is not a supersteel, so what are we paying for with over 200 EUR, they're asking for it?
