I love my chickens kim and the fresh eggs are amazing..free range is something I do but have wire fencing around all beds and a fence around one garden area because...my bok boks tear up and eat all greens..most all yard areas..Chickens love dirt baths they dig up an area then wallow in it. This can be challenging. Compost must be protected as well. Sooo worth it for the eggs. They take up very little space coopwise. little known fact about the eggs, they have a natural coating on them which allows for them to be outside for days without going bad, no refridgeration needed. They put themsels to bed at dusk, I just shut the gate.
Love everything you do. You are such an inspiration

I'm in central Texas. I'm cleaning out my veg gardens and will be planting this week (3rd week March) just the things I like to eat. Maybe get the vineyard, about 300 ft, started AGAIN! No wine, just vine fruits. Insects-grasshoppers killed it off last time. Replant a few fruit trees in the orchard area as I can afford. No flowers for now, may look at that later, but certainly could use some color all around. I'm limited to rain and water catchment. Challenging at times, but, I'm looking forward to a good year with the garden and other projects. Take care...

What a beautiful place! I definitely wouldn't mind the outdoor porch with the beds and bath. Looks like something out of a magazine or game. Beautiful big oak tree, especially when lit at nights with those lights! The watering system is cool but I feel like it would be too complex for me to run, would take some time to learn for sure. I would absolutely love a big wooden/stone house like that with all that beautiful scenery with lots of woods around it with a river. I bet you two had a blast there!

Kim, I hear you on your love for woods, as I have heard this from so many of the former Californians that have found a new home in Nashville.
We live out in the suburbs and have 12 acres of woods at the top of our backyard. There is a semi-secret nature trail that meanders for 2/3 of a mile in a somewhat circuitous route. These woods are full of wildlife, including deer, raccoons, possum, squirrels, birds, chipmunks, a wayward bobcat, nomadic coyotes, a couple of beautiful barred owls (one of whom has decided he/she likes human companionship and has taken up residence in our yard), possibly one armadillo, but most importantly--snakes. That is the trouble with Southern woods. We have timber rattlesnakes and copperheads in addition to numerous nonvenomous snakes, including a rat snake that looked more like a python it was so big.
Overall, the worst problems about living in the wooded South are chiggers and ticks. If you walk on the trail unadorned in preventive measures, you will exit the woods covered in ticks and itching from chiggers.
Lemon eucalyptus and other organic essential oils are effective but not 100% effective, so there are numerous liabilities to having woods like the one's you saw on your trip to Arkansas.
I guess it is a case of the grass is always greener, but I would love to live in a western US desert with red rocks, cactus, and yucca that spreads out for miles and miles, and having almost no allergy issues, plus a growing season that is close to 365 days a year.

do you know of any fruits/vegetables that would come back year after year that would be good to eat?

Chad Lutrell My lettuces re seed themselves, also strawberries and asparagus are perennial. You can over winter peppers if you live in a warm climate. I'd google your hardiness zone + perennial vegetables/fruits to see what grows in your area year after year. Also, fruit trees and berry bushes(blackberrries, blueberries, etc.) are yearly harvests.

Hello Ronzell, yes, they are edible, but I love to wait for the fruit! Do you grow strawberries? Edible flowers, like nasturtiums, are a fabulous addition to the garden. Thanks for watching!
