I was lucky enough to have wonderful school dinners in Lancashire in the 1970s and Manchester Tart was one of the highlights….thankyou for posting it! I can still hear the head dinnerlady Mrs Isherwood saying “we’ll have five minutes sai-lence, and WOE betide the furst wan to talk” 😀
I used to watch the Food Channel and everything that was made was just perfection. I love watching you as you make mistakes or there are holes in the pastry and you always manage to patch things up and carry on. Everything you make looks wholesome and mouthwatering. It's a pleasure to watch someone in an ordinary kitchen making everyday normal meals. I watch both your channels and really enjoy watching both of you. Great job!
Oh wow this brought up memories tonight, I remember growing up in the late 60 early 70 and my mum baking us all this every Sunday. She was born and raised in Leigh so she & her brothers & sisters grew up on this and they all raised us exactly the same.. Thank you for sharing a long forgotten recipe since I lost my mum 20 years ago but not any longer as I'm going to teach my granddaughters as I know she would have. Sending warm hugs from a thankful follower 🫶
I love Manchester tart and had this at school with bananas in it. I can eat it with or without, I’m not fussy, it’s lovely either way. I also like banofee pie.
Happy days I enjoyed this pudding at my school in Altrincham cheshire not far from Manchester. Manchester tart was one of my favorites. Loved school dinners. Slimming world healthy plan for diet and nutrition maintaining target weight for over a year. No harm in a treat pudding it is all about a good balanced diet everything in moderation. Life is for living. Enjoy.
I loved Manchester Tart as a kid in the 70's. Back in the days when School Dinners were made from scratch not just reheated from bought in frozen stuff.
WOW. Thanks Mandy. Looks great. Like to see the old puds coming back especially now we're in Autumn. I have a desperate request for Queen of Puddings. Looks cheap to make. Never done but always wanted to. Would you show us? Thanks. Lisa x
I have not seen Manchester Tart since the 1960's at school dinners. Yours had double the volume of custard - how delicious is that. Thanks for the tip of egg white egg wash. I will give one a try. Thank You.
As a Manchester lad I can tell you your tart was absolutely authentic and proper. It looked really delicious and I'm gutted that I couldn't try a slice. Not to worry I'm going to make one at weekend following your recipe and method exactly. Thanks very much for doing this. I can't believe I only requested this t'other day. Any chance of doing Eccles cakes?
One of my asks...love love love Man' Tart,my step mum was a cook at our local primary school and used to bring a tray of this home every Friday. Yummmmmm (nothing on the custard..i loved the skin on) Ty for cooking and sharing Mrs D L 🎉
As we are most unlikely to meet at the supermarket (i live in the Netherlands) i hereby say that i now bake at least one of your recipes every weekend. The family loves it! Thank you dinner lady. ❤
Cheers, guys, from Southern Alabama, USA. I love ❤️ your recipes, your accents and of course your measurements which are so different from ours for the oven, etc. A lot of our ancestors came from England so I do enjoy watching you and yours. I had my ancestors researched and my blood is half Scottish 😮! I’d love to visit but at 71, I’ll never have the money. Haha!
Takes me back 60yrs to school lunches. Really like this one. I also liked a pastry tart that had a slightly crunchy filling with currants but have no idea what it was called. I was one of the dinner monitors so after clearing the tables, if there were leftovers the dinner ladies used to give us slices of these kind of deserts. Yummy! Shared to Pinterest.
Not eaten Manchester Tart for over 50 years when at school. Must now make it. Yours looked absolutely delicious. Thank you for these videos. I do have a query though. Although I can't eat food with spices especially garlic I'm hooked, like and subscribed on you and husband 's TH-cam. Why is this? Actually I can answer myself. You both come over on camera as two really nice genuine people and are so relaxing and enjoyable to watch. Also recipes can be adapted to suit our families taste. So thank you very much.
Yes yes yessss yessss..no I'm not doing when Harry met Sally,I'm made up to see that tart,no not mandy, that Manchester one (lol sorry mandy I'm.only joking)..that looks delicious thankyou so much for making it 😊
I haven't had that in years, thanks for the recipe, I'm going to make it for me and and my Wife. From a fellow Makem, now living in Glasgow for many years.
We used have this for school dinners here in York, I last had it when I worked for Asda in Manchester for lunch in our Staff canteen... Yours looks delicious though, might make one one now! I remember we also had bananas and custard at school but not as a tart though... 😊 I make my sweet pastry with just flour, icing sugar and full fat milk... You do get a different texture with milk 😊
Made this Friday 15/11/24..Nearly gone between me and my husband! Absolutely beautiful!! Only query is that I had loads of custard left..used 9" removable bottom tart tin, mebb your was deeper? Also, it was a little too thick...might use little less cornflour and 1 less egg next time, will that work? Thanxxx again Kath!! ❤❤❤
Yummo!! I love Manchester Tart and I think I’ll make one this week sometime. I haven’t made one for a long time. My mouth is drooling. Enjoy, both of you.
Can I ask I noticed you are not using your air fryer lately, is it broke? as this would be a perfect recipe to use in it, instead of expensive oven. I toast the coconut for more flavour. I baked my Christmas cake in my Bridge Pro 30L air fryer a week before you did yours and it is moist and lovely.
One of my favourites along with Chorley cakes and Eccles cakes 😊 I am so tempted to make my knees right now but I have to wait till another week or two when I get sorted keep up the good work and hard work looking forward to the next one
Now that looks lovely, what my husband would refer to as 'proper food'. I've never had this before but I'm making it tonight. I would think that most of us must have these basic ingredients in our kitchens so it's great to find such a lovely little recipe like this.
@@thedinnerlady9180 We did! It seems such a simple recipe and yet it's so tasty. I can't believe I have ever made this before. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Ur the 1st person iv seen make Manchester tart wit out using birds custard, love it thank u xx will definitely making this favourite dessert xx thank you xx
I’ve never really been a fan of custard at the best of times but my dad loved it. Sometimes he would put a slice of Manchester Tart under a hot grill briefly to lightly toast the layer of coconut giving it a crispy crust to bite into.
There was a lush pudding when I was in school I always thought it was butterscotch tart but in the recipes I’ve seen it’s super sweet the one I remember was the colour of butterscotch angel delight even a similar taste pastry bottom and the butterscotch was very creamy slightly lighter tester to egg custard and had a swirl of cream on the top just wish I could find the recipe well that’s how it was in wales, I think you had different school dinners up here in the north east love your channel what’s Ian’s channel?
I am currently doing this as I write to you, my grand daughter Ruby and I are now waiting for the custard to cool right down so that we can put it into the pastry, I did cheat by using a sweet pastry pie base ready made from Tesco, as you know I am rubbish with pastry. The grand kids dont like coconut so Ruby has decided we are going to put grated chocolate on she is currently grating a large galaxy bar then we will add this to the top and leave for as long as I can get her to leave it in the fridge until she wants to eat it. I will let her take the rest home for her two sisters thanks again for another wonderful dessert ( goes right back to school dinners for me too) love to you both Maggie
This takes me back to my school days in early 80s, absolutely loved it....loved all my school puddings 😊
Me too, specially Manchester tart 😋

That brought back some childhood memories. My Mum often used to make that.
I have not seen Manchester Tart since the 1960's at school dinners. Yours had double the volume of custard - how delicious is that. Thanks for the tip of egg white egg wash. I will give one a try. Thank You.
Me too... only ever ate it at school dinner times and I'm a Manchester lass. I don't think it can be bought in shops, never seen it.
A stall on Radcliffe market sell them. Open Wednesday and Saturday

ABSOLUTELY never heard of this tart. Will make it for dessert next Sunday.
I make one with lemon curd and put lemon juice in the custard to make it different and zesty topping
Looks amazing Thank you x
It was a toss-up between this, chocolate sponge with peppermint custard, and ginger cake and custard. Oh the choices we had in the early 70s.
As we are most unlikely to meet at the supermarket (i live in the Netherlands) i hereby say that i now bake at least one of your recipes every weekend. The family loves it! Thank you dinner lady. ❤

Love the videos, the way baking should be. Your opinion please. For a Swiss roll should I use plain or self raising flour? Seen recipies using both.
