  • Tips on how to spool a baitcast reel with line. Next in the series of videos from my garage. I use some backing all the time on my reels. This shows how to do this as well as keeping your line from slipping on the spool. Really simple trick to help with this!

    One of my guilty pleasures is watching the pro’s pulling out backlash.

    Alright man. You have just caused a mind explosion. 👀👀. First you didn’t tie the braid on the spool and then just an over hand knot joining the two lines together!!!! That defies everything I have been taught! Hahahah. But this is good!!!! You know how much time this will save me!!! Thanks man!!!!

    I’ve been doing this for a while. And… being a nut for efficiency, I tried to measure the line. Literally got a field measurer and the listed reel capacity to try and get just the right amount. I did not account however for the circumference increasing as the spool fills up. In short, be like Ott and trust your eyes and instinct haha.

    Awesome tip with the tape Ott I have had several people say their drag would not tighten but it was the braid slipping on the the spool and not the drag defective

    I need to start using backing. I find myself getting lazy and not replacing the line often enough. Fishing with only half a spool or less. Thanks for helping me to be better.

    I use Cabela's Ripcord for backing. Besides being cheap, I'm sure to notice if I'm getting low on mainline because of the color.

    I figured he’d let everybody know weather reeling the line from the top or bottom of the new spool is best for baitcaster but, since he didn’t folks. You ALWAYS want nee line coming off the top with a baitcaster from the bottom with a spinning reel. This prevents line twist

    Ott you should know if you buy that new bait caster at bass pro we will spool it for you. It amazes me how many people don’t know how or care to spool their own reels.

    Ott 2 things yep old video but line changing is monthly
    1. I noticed when I use braid for backing I get about 15' to 20' longer cast
    Old school..... on number 2 ?
    2. bait caster over on line spool- open face under on line spool YOUR THOUGHTS ON BOTH QUESTIONS PLEASE?? ????

    • @OttDeFoeFishing
      @OttDeFoeFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it does. It should be the same way the bail is spinning when reeling

    Ott how do you do this with heavier braid for thick mats or heavy grass areas specifically frog fishing?

  • @raymaylone8563

    Evening Ott when you finish putting your backing on I’ve done the same thing for years but instead of a night I put another small piece of tape on the back and then put my floral carbon under the same piece of tape so that is a smooth transition without that knot. Could you possibly do the next step on how to put braid on a bait caster. I’ve been trying for a while but I don’t know what I’m doing wrong because when I set the hook the line digs into the rest of the spool. Thx

    • @OttDeFoeFishing
      @OttDeFoeFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea! Some braids do this worse than others. Just part of using braid!

    • @mrc1893
      @mrc1893 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @raymaylone try using a braid bigger than 30lb. The thinner the braid the more likey it is to do this. I have found 40lb to be a sweet spot for baitcasters although I do use 30lb but again will occasionally have this problem time to time.

  • @michaelpaul1716

    Does the flouro end up backlashing deeper into the braid vs if it backlashed into more flouro?

    Isn’t braid a tad expensive to use just for backing? I use mono then fill up with braid. Braid lasts me, just a monthly angler, it lasts me about 10 years. Now today’s rods I am a stranger to. I bought a new rod 3 years ago, but it seems like it would break if I tried to lift anything more than a 1 1/2 lb bass with it. It may not. I have some older bass pro crankin sticks that I love. They have cork handles also which I love. Not sure on the new Crankin sticks.

    Do you do this on your deep fishing setups? I ask because after u hang up a few times you’re almost down to the knot, now gotta trash all that line and re-spool. Just wondering if you’ve run into this issue and how u handle it.

    • @benbrownlow5007
      @benbrownlow5007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wondering the same but if it got that far you could cut behind the knot and tie on new line still saving the backing line and money

      I don’t know what he does, but I keep a bait caster and spinning reel in my boat. Spinning with 15lb braid and bait caster with 14lb fluro. I can put the reel on a rod in a pinch.

    • @OttDeFoeFishing
      @OttDeFoeFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that it weighs less than mono or fluoro and that this helps in some way. Just my thought process.

    What would you say your ratio was in terms of yards for each?
    Would you say 80 yards is about average for long casts?

    • @OttDeFoeFishing
      @OttDeFoeFishing  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think I put about 100 yards max on them. A long cast is 120-130’. This is about the max. Anyone who tells you they can cast 75 yards is not truthful! 😂

    ????? Ott real quick I get a ton of different answers for this ???
    Ok here it is. If I put braid mono fora on a reel. Used it or not used it how long do I keep that line on before it's ready to change again. And no sir no nick or bad spots just on reel. Fishing or just setting on reel "how long please for all?????

    • @markclaerhout8844
      @markclaerhout8844 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know I’m not Ott but my experience has taught me this...
      Braid- change or reverse it when it starts to fray or get fuzzy.
      Monofilament- change at least once a year. But it’s less expensive and if you use it more change it more.
      Fluorocarbon- depending on quality(higher quality tends to have less memory) I’ve used it for 2 years.

    • @OttDeFoeFishing
      @OttDeFoeFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Braid is good until you get low on the spool. I only change it when the level is low. Mono is cheaper and the strength fades fast it seems. Maybe 6 months tops on a reel. Fluoro can last longer if kept in dark areas and cool temps. It will want to take a set of shape on a reel once it’s been on there a month so it’s a good idea to pull out a long cast and kind of straighten it out before going fishing.

    • @captaintenille1569
      @captaintenille1569 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So me changing it every other month is good for mono and fora now ott what I do and have u ever heard of this before.. I take my reel and rod tie it to my gate of truck and walk up to 50 yards and stretch it until almost breaking line and hold it for about 15 mins seems to work great to get out the memory but only last for a trip or two.. what u think about that ??? And yes I walk with 3 rod & reels

    What pound test backing line do you use?

  • @captaintenille1569
    @captaintenille1569 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also ott for info ken that's xoing the boat thing " don't buy new boat until u watch this"" he is doing 10 boats testing.. but to say that this is what he been also doing talking with biologist at Texas wildlife folks. What I realized and him also I got 2 ponds one is 2ac other is 5plus if I catch bass and Releases them back I can only catch maybe 3 to 5 in little pond big pond I can do around 8 to 10. They always stop bitting. Now here is the WOW FACTOR IF I KEEP THEM I CAN KEEP CATCHING THEM CRAZY RIGHT. DO YOU THINK THEY PUT OFF A WARNING TO OTHERS IN A GEOGRAPHICAL AREA. A BUDDY OF MINE HAS A 120 plus AC pond same thing but it takes longer and his population is 4lb to 14lb bass they only fish that pond for crappie and let's me and 3 others fish for bass 3 months out of the year cause they use it for Turkey wildlife federation. Dont ask why only 3 months but its lights out for 3 months but u keep them they stop after about 4 bass unless u go to other end but then it still only 3 or 4 before it stops now u keep in live well it's big bass time biggest came out that 120ac is 14.7 lb. But 5 to 8 all day long and maybe 12 once a week or so but 5 to 8 all day long
