I really like your joining method. I've figured out a method for joining at the ends of rows, but with yours I can do scrap yarn projects and not have to worry about the ends so much.
Wow! I love the way you change colors. Kind of like the Russian join, but without needing to run a sewing needle through the yarn.
Yes, the same idea as in Russian join but I never have the patience for it!

I've never seen that method of changing yarns before, but I really like it. It looks like it will make a secure join without knots (something I haven't been able to avoid before now), and without "sewing" the ends together, as I've seen for another join method. Many thanks for teaching me something new!

I use all kind of joins, depending on the fiber and project, but this join (which I have ignored in the past) is perfect for this scrappy project!!! And dont have to worry about join coming apart (not with those slippery yarns)

Downloaded the handy stitch calculation guide. I almost never swatch for gauge (and rarely ever make projects where gauge is an issue), but I can see where knowing one's personal gauge with a given hook size and yarn weight would make it much easier to make something like an afghan with any pattern stitch of one's choice, rather than being limited to whatever project size a fully written-out pattern calls for.
Yes, it is often handy. Normally I always make a swatch. True, you have so much choice when you just select what kind of stitches you want and then calculate how many stitches you need.

I am a new knitter so as you can imagine I have loads of odd ends, lots of failed projects and a heap of strands. So I’m going to use them in a blanket which will remind me of my mistakes, un uniformed and messy way that will remind of my mid life crisis.

I like the scrappy look because it’s called a scrap blanket.
Other videos on scrap blanket show very very even and neat rows each row bring entirely one color. They don’t look like scrap blankets using up bits and pieces.

Yes, it is just the same in knitting. I use it a lot in multicolour knitting projects.

I got into hand crochet years ago as a kid and haven't looked back. It's helped me past time watching movies, shows, and waiting on loads when I was trucking. But a much fun as I had making them, I just didn't know what to do with it afterwards. I ended up with a ball of hand crocheted yarn all the time. Could you help me make the red, white and blue into a pattern? I have one in mind but not sure how to put them together.
What kind of a pattern do you have in mind? What would it need to look like?
The comment had gone to trash folder because there was a link! So you already have done the different parts according to that logo? Then you can just either sew them together or crochet them together along the edges using single crochets (in American crochet terms).

There is so much you can make using scraps! Yes, it is better that the different yarns are approximately the same weight, otherwise the project bulges out where there is thicker yarn. Or you can use lightweight yarn double if most of your scrap yarn is heavier weight.
Can you use leftover yarn to make a baby blanket for a boy crochet with blue and white and lite baby green yarn yarn
Yes, you could use that same idea with any yarn or any colours!

Can you use mix match with different weight and thickness of yarn for this project
It would be better not to have a lot of variation in yarn thickness. If you do, it is likely to bulge out in places where you have thicker yarn. But if you go for that, it would be important to spread the different weights evenly across your work, not all thick yarn on one side and all thinner yarn together.

I can't think of anything else than you just make enough chains for the width you want and then crochet until it is big enough.
What is this stitch called please?
It depends if you use English or American crochet terms. In English terms, it is trebles, in US terms doublecrochets. Then just always chaining 1 in between. But I don't know if this very basic stitch combination has a name.
What size hook?
The hook size depends on the weight of your yarn. On the video my hook is 4 mm.

The edges are not straight. I see how she puts the last stitch in the "next to the last" stitch from the row before, then turns. There is a way to prevent this but she didn't do it. Sorry but everything else might be great, but that was the first thing I noticed.
