      @@wendajones9040 I made mine about 130 chains and it is very wide. I would suggest starting with 100 chains and then adjusting it to your preference from there. Probably somewhere between 110 and 120 for a regular blanket, but it will also depend on your yarn, hook, and tension.

    I was making a crop top but it was my first crochet project so the whole thing came out horribly. Now I'm adding more yarn to turn it into a desk blanket (not long enough for the bed but perfect length and width for sitting at my desk to work). I can treasure it as my first project, see all the mistakes (and improvements) while having it keep me cozy. I'm going to add more colours just for fun. Hi Robin, can I use yarn of different weights when making something like your stashbuster blanket or is it best to stick to the same type?

    • @HookedbyRobin
      @HookedbyRobin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can yes! If you aren't precious about the edges (or are happy to fix any wobbliness with a border) then you can go wild! If you prefer to have consistency, then you can mix the weights as long as you keep them the same throughout (if that makes sense!)

    WONDERFUL IDEA! Could you please tell me the number of CHAINS in your STARTING chain for such a 'massive huge blanket'? :) and did you use ALL category 4 / worsted weight yarns, or did you mix any other weights? also a MIX of assorted fibers OK? or stick to all acrylics?? TYIA

    • @HookedbyRobin
      @HookedbyRobin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I actually used foundation half doubles for the start of this blanket - I've done a quick count and started with 89 FHDC on the 9mm hook :-)
      th-cam.com/video/MHo70BNBIzw/w-d-xo.html
      As for the yarn weights, for this I've used all the same yarn weight (purely as I have the most of it that needs using up!) BUT you can absolutely mix yarn weights and fibres together! No right or wrong way to do it 😀 I've got mainly acrylic with a few different yarns like sequin / sparkly lurex type yarns thrown in for good measure haha!

    • @CharlesDeBarrosPh
      @CharlesDeBarrosPh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @HookedbyRobin
      @HookedbyRobin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do! If you want to maintain straight edges then I'd recommend keeping the same combination of weights evenly throughout the blanket (so having a 3, 4 & 5 as your 3 strands consistently for the entire blanket) HOWEVER, the beauty of scrap blankets is that it doesn't really matter if they are wonky and crazy! If you aren't bothered by perfection and just want a huge blanket that will keep you warm then you are totally free to do whatever you want and mix up the weights however you want 😀 The edges probably won't be straight and depending on how extreme the thickness are it may wobble in and out like a curvy lady but it'll keep you snug and warm 🥰

    How many stitches did you start with? When I make blankets, I never know how many chains to begin with.

    • @HookedbyRobin
      @HookedbyRobin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I generally eyeball the width I want by lying the chains across my lap 😂
      For this blanket I actually used Foundation Half Double Crochet stitches rather than a chains to start th-cam.com/video/MHo70BNBIzw/w-d-xo.html I did 89 of them on my 9mm hook :-)

    Do we have to use two strands ? Can't we work with just one and add on ??

    I have always loved scrap blankets because they are all unique and its the not knowing how it will look once finished,often much nicer than if a pattern had been used!

    I’m working with two #4 yarns, and an N hook... The main yarn is Lion Brand Ombré...colorwaybHAPPY, and various colors of LB Ice Cream, Cotton blend, plus some solid colored yarn.. . I’m usurping n HDC stitch. I love it.

    Hi, I really like the idea of using 3 strands of yarn, but mine is coming out stiff, like a rug, should I change hook size, using an 8 mm, or change the stitch, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

    • @HookedbyRobin
      @HookedbyRobin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like hook size - definitely try a larger hook! What weight of yarn are you using triple stranded? I use a 10 or 12mm for 3 strands :-) x

      @@HookedbyRobin Thank you for replying :) I'm using 4 medium yarn, I'll ry a bigger hook, I just bought the 8mm clover one too and it works up nice. Good excuse to buy another one :)

    Robin, do you mix worsted weight yarn with fine 🍼 baby sport? Will it make a difference? This is one of my favorite projects; I give them as gifts. The color play is magnificent!

    I have seen a lot of stash buster or scrap yarn blankets, but I have never seen anyone else do exactly this... I have made 2 blankets so far exactly like this hook and all, except I use double crochet. I'm currently got 4 going for my kids to each have one. I call them fun funky crazy blankets. I ball all my yarn im not gonna use into small balls and randomly pick a ball when 1 rolls out so they are super funky.

    I’ve become hooked on crocheting double stranded baby blankets… I #3 yarn… Two strands makes a very soft, squishy blanket.. You can mix colors, or use one color as a constant… There are lots of options.

    Hi I have Moya Celebration balls, it's a south african yarn, it's basically a ball with different weight yarns in one ball, do you think I could make a blanket like this with it?

    Can I use different gauges of yarn? I have a lot of worsted weight but also have a lot of chunky yarn, weight 5 and 6.

    My first scrap yarn blanket fits over a xl twin size bed and then some. I did 2 strands...always one light color like a white, aran...off white and a color. A million kinds of yarns and the whole thing in a double crochet with an H hook. Took about 6 hours. Was just watching TV and stitching along on a rainy weekend. These are my favorite also!!
