Not entirely the Traveler's fault since the Darkness is always chasing it. The ones truly responsible for all that war are those that serve the Witness.
@@TheKitsuneDuke but the traveller willingly goes to those places knowing the darkness will follow it. It's a moral dilemma: Is it worth the short term enjoyment granted by the traveller if our descendents will live a life of suffering when the darkness attacks?
@@r.a1301 the darkness would come anyway. With or without the traveler. The traveler is at least giving worlds and people a chance to grow and thrive. The darkness corrupts and destroys because it can. The light believes in cooperation and complexity. The dark believes in survival of the fittest and simplicity. War was always inevitable. Now there is some criticism for the traveler outright leaving worlds to die and some argument that it landing on worlds only make the darkness coming faster. But the darkness was always coming no matter what and it’s the darkness that does all the damage and death. The traveler is trying to help others and is another victim to the darkness’s cruelty and pettiness for changing the rules of the game.
@@TheKitsuneDuke The book of sorrows and the vex creation story points to the fact that the light and darkness are both tweo sides of the same coin. At the end of season of arrivals, the Difter also mentions that the difference between the light and the dark doesnt matter. Both cannot exist without the other, both played a game where one aimed to prove the other wrong. As it stands and based on the names of the nect two D2 expansions, it seems that the light is failing to do that. It's become more evident that the reason why the traveller decided to make Savathun a light barer was an attempt to try and show the darkness that the Hive would excell more with the sky and not the deep. In a way we shoud'nt have killed Savathun because we helped prove the traveller wrong.
@@WaveForceful Or could be that it wanted to be sealed, I believe that the Witness was speaking to the traveler in the cutscene, it said ‘your pale heart holds the key’ maybe the traveler has something deep in its shell that the witness wants, or that the traveler actually stole the light and holds it inside of itself. What key does the Witness speak of I wonder.
I like the design. The Darkness isn't necessarily evil. It's motives are beyond our understanding, as are the traveler's. The Witness just being completely otherworldly, having after images, it's head ploomimg into smoke with faces, is beyond what we'd think a living being would look like.
it's 100% not evil. the traveler literally fractured the universe and created all kinds of anomalies and unnecessary suffering by trying to experiment and mess with life, and the darkness is just trying to clean up its mess and restore order to the universe. The light is the bad guy technically. it wanted to play God and go against the natural way of the universe, and in doing so created all kinds of issues and imbalances. This is all based on the example of the game they played in the garden.
@@carsonkouts the traveler wants the universe to be ever changing, like the real-world. The Darkness wants the universe to be a single entity and force, nothing unique about it from itself, no individuality. Don't try to spin the traveler as evil when the darkness is much easier to spin lol. The Traveler has been playing the game fair and square the whole time, the Darkness is the one that designed things to specifically cheat the system and the garden, rather than actually play the game itself.
@@NoJenk Well let's see, we already know of at least one race the traveler visited then abandoned, so its not hard to see the traveler as a bad guy. it travels around playing God, blessing civilizations and then the moment the darkness shows up it leaves them to die and moves on to another race. It's literally just a mad scientist discarding failed experiments my guy. Seems pretty screwed up to me. It brings death and horror to everything it touches, and it knows it. but it doesn't care. the darkness just wants things to be normal and not chaotic. there's an old saying about people thinking they want freedom but in reality they just want to be ruled and told what to do and how to live.
@@carsonkouts That's not what it's doing at all did you not play Beyond Light? It's been searching for a trump against the darkness for eternity trying to find a way to beat basically those cheats I was talking about. The fallen weren't war mongering though, they weren't savage and battle hardened like Humanity. They were extremely peaceful and when they advanced they didn't go right into conquering the stars or creating weapons of war like humanity did. They prospered and became even more peaceful. Not exactly a good force to destroy an eldritch entity that has been cheating to destroy all of existence. And if you've seen the witch queen campaign completely the Darkness knows the traveler is trying to build up a force to defend itself. An individual force of separate wills and intentions trying to go against a force that may as well just be one entity. But the traveler tried to reach the hive. An extremely savage and battle hardened race, that was TRICKED by the darkness to sacrifice their freedom and wills for its power, because imagine the hive we have now, the lore of it, but they were a force of the light. The Darkness couldn't have stood against that force, the unending armies of hive with thousands, if not millions, blessed with light. And hold on IT brings the death and horror? It's the one being CHASED by all of that. The traveler doesn't want the races it stumbles upon to die, it's been trying to create a defense force for itself, or make a race equally as powerful as the Darkness', but every time it gets somewhere the darkness swoops in. The traveler didn't cause the collapse, it made humanity prosper more than any race it had found before. The fallen, hive, cabal, vex, and black fleet caused the collapse. But the Black Fleet and Witness spin it like its the traveler's fault. If the traveler never found humanity but the black fleet or hive, or cabal, did where would humanity be? Yeah, they wouldn't exist anymore. People do want to be free, that's some cringey shit saying people say when they wanna subjugate free people who haven't done anything wrong. (Also just cause it's a saying doesn't mean it's right lmao). But regardless of that statement, the darkness wouldn't rule them. The universe, galaxies, planets, and even the individual soul would cease to exist if the darkness won. There would be no freedom, no death sure, but that's because there be nothing technically living anymore. That's not a universe normal folk who are... yknow... ALIVE want to see. Because to make a universe like that you have to cause the foundations of the one that allows for life and death to cease to exist, meaning everything within it as well.
@@NoJenk I spent 8 years active duty and went to a lot of different countries. it's 100% true. Its human nature to fall in line and follow one individual. it's that way with 99% of life on earth. It's why we elect individuals to make decisions for us, so that we don't have to. we have the illusion of being in control, but we aren't. only ignorant and sheltered people think otherwise. And to put the entire light vs dark in context, it's no different than life and death in our universe. if things didn't die, the earth and the universe at some point would stop being able to sustain it and we would all die anyway, except with the added measure of causing lasting damage that further screws up any possible future generations. THAT is what the darkness serves to prevent. As Long as life and death go on the way it was intended, and originally did for however long, things continue on. Once the traveler decided to leave, that's when the destruction and true horror began. it's how life works.
you all remember the enemy race concepts, I'm more surprised that the witness looks soo much like the original concept for enemy race 5 the black body and white face, the flowing smoke-like effect
Even in the build to its appearance in the campaign just give me chills. Like the fact that it made a race as powerful and expansive as the hive seem like mere pawns, it’s just scary
From d1 to right now. Bungie keep stories make us belive "The Hives most dangeorus enemies and there is none more powerfull from them" When we see the withness and we learn the hive was kinda pawn but trying to realese shackles from witness..... our guardians say "OOOKEEEYYY ı'm death!!!End of story" :D
At first, I was disappointed. The appealing fear we've always had of the Darkness came from how unknowable it was. Inevitable. Even with the Pyramids, the Darkness was formless. Faceless. And so, giving it a name "The Witness" takes that fear away. It gives it a face. And yet... OH MY GOD they made its design so beautifully terrifying!
might just be an envoy or a messenger of the darkness, i have a feeling if the darkness was to take on a body it would probably just be the veiled lady we see so much in the pyramid ships, i mean it makes sense, that it’s a statue that looks like it’s worshiped, so that’s probably what it might look like to any who sees it, including our guardians
I think the witness is a member of the fourth enemy race and the complete direct subordinates of the darkness. Even though guardians use the light we are more comparable to the hive in that we just use the darkness and light and are not direct subordinates of the travellers will. The traveler still hasn’t found or decided to make a race like the one in the cutscene.
I absolutely love the design, my only issue is the big puppy eyes. If the Witness had something like completely pale eyes it would have been much more ominous and lifeless which is kinda the purpose
I respectfully disagree. The large eyes give off an uncanny vibe and look absolutely unsettling. It does look a little goofy at first but the unblinking and emotionless eyes really sell it for me.
Notice how the smoke coming from his head doesn’t emit faces until he opens his gateway; almost like it’s signifying him communicating w/ the other pyramid ships in the cutscene.
@@cardrabitt1159 ah yes, the man who’s strategy was putting up a bubble in the courtyard while dying multiple times despite the traveler’s light being taken. that is the most combat we’ve seen him do other than gun. dude’s kinda pathetic but I await the day he loses his cool.
Nearly 10 years of anticipation. I just wanna see all the different concept art and the process that lead to this result. Such a huge challenge and they pulled it off.
I don't think it would have the same impact. We have spent longer with some of theae characters than our friends and family. The timing was perfect. It reminded me of ASoIaF
I think we will lose in during light fall, but will have to recover ourselves and we start teaming up with our past enemies and like Savathûn, Eramis, And Calus. This probably the point we begin to learn how to wield other dark powers.
Witch queen has answered allot of my questions. But I still have one more. What is the traveler. If that figure really is the witness than the questions leads to if the traveler is one of the same. Is the traveler a omnipotent sphere or a ship carrying someone else like the pyramids. We never saw a face ever in the pyramids and yet (spoilers) There are cities and factories inside them as if someone can live there. Whats inside the white ball, only time will tell and hopefully light fall will answer that
You're right. The ghosts are highly advanced pieces of technology capable of bringing someone back from the dead like it's nothing and they even have their own personalities. Something inside the traveler is making these things. There may be someone inside making Ghosts instead of them just popping out. If I had to take a stab at it. I'd say the Traveler is actually the last Light Vessel that partook in the war against the Darkness. There used to be a lot of them just like how there's dozens of pyramids. But all but one got wiped out. This war between the Light and Dark could go back further than we could ever imagine. I'm talking before creation of the universe itself
@@furionmax7824 it really does go back further than the creation of the universe. In fact, our universe was created because the Gardener and the Winnower decided to make a bet.
And the line "Your pale heart holds the key." Is another hint to the Traveler I believe. The Traveler contains something the witness wants, whatever it might be.
This is featured in a lore book. There was one guardian named fencherch everis who decided to fly his ship into the traveler he said it smelled of vanilla and that he saw what looked like a huge female fetus. He thought that she was a god and that the thing she was in was a god incubator. Oh and there are multiple travelers of different shapes and sizes this was not described in this lore book but I believe has been said in others. But yes the traveler is basically a female goddess baby. It may sound weird but if u wanna see what was described just look up what is the traveler from destiny on TH-cam. U should see one that says in the thumbnail "Went inside Traveler?Fencherch Everis.
@@Zed-gj8vq I would wager that the Witness needs the Traveller and the Darkness for its plan to end everything. It has the Darkness if that's what's inside the pyramids...
I personally really like the design. It's foreign, but also grounded enough in familiarity. As far as the eyes go, they make sense. If you're part of the darkness you'd need large eyes to take in as much light as possible.
0:50 This entire background mirrors the scene in the Traveler's Dream cutscene from D2 with the pyramids dropping into the water above the crying statues. I wonder if that was originally symbolic of the collapse and if there's a connection here with the color choice
@@kennonfleisher Personally im fine with it because of the expectations they were setting over time. Saying he was once mortal, blessed by the light like us, a chid of the darkness itself and what not made it imply he would have an appearance a bit more mundande than some loveraftian entity because he isnt the entity itself, that would be the winnower. The witness is more akin to something like the speaker is to the traveler. The over arching big bad is the winnower which if it doesnt have en eldritvh style to it or a design that shows what soemthing that is a rule of the universe itself would be percieved as i will be mad. And i think guardians being acasual or paracasaul which means they are cut off from rational cause and effect and the rules and laws of the universe as we know it so perfect to kill somethinh that is a law of the universe.
@@kennonfleisher Isn't the black fleet supposed to represent temptation? I wouldn't expect the witness to be scary, I would expect it to look much like the veiled statue in the pyramid. Tempting.
Neither the gardener or winnower take form. This dude is simply the big bad user of the darkness the same way "the guardian" is the big bad user of the light.
actually it's the goddess sophia and her son demiurge. gardening being a term for wreaking chaos. ya know how like when you destroy your sons wrongful creation and they just start to fuck up your shit and ground you they call you a tyrant
We're so close everyone, so close to fighting an agent of the actual darkness itself (I say agent because there is no confirmation that the witness is the darkness itself, the witness could merely be an agent of the darkness) Lightfall, the DLC where our guardian may actually meet their end, the hints we gained from the vex timelines and our grave stone, all of that now points to this very moment. Our guardian is an anomaly, mainly because their accomplishments by killing atheon, crota, oryx, taniks, the splicers, ghaul, etc, etc isn't something of a normal guardian (I know each of them, well most of them required 6 guardians but even then it still counts in some way) We even managed to defeat savathun in battle, and while she could be resurrected by her ghost, it shows that despite the light she was granted, even she could not withstand our capabilities. The question now comes, can we actually defeat the witness, can we change our fate... or is lightfall where we make our very sacrifice that saint-14 had said when we traversed the timelines? Also if we are holding the bastion in it, I'm gonna dismantle that fucking exotic, rather die with something more effective than a trash fusion rifle.
@Joaquin the gardener and winnower are two separate entities, the traveler i don’t think is the gardener, nor is the witness the winnower, i’d like to believe both the witness and traveler or whoever controls the machine is just envoys of they’re respective entities, we still have no clue what the gardener looks like, as for the winnower i willing to bet it’s the veiled lady we see in almost every pyramid ship we’ve been, it’s literally a statue, which seems to be worshiped as evident when our guardian communes with it, so yea my guess that is the winnower in it’s physical form
I for one think it looks terrifyingly creepy as it is. My only tiny complaint is the nose, I feel like they could’ve done something else with it, it looks s bit too bulbous for me. Anyone else? Still love the design overall
Thats exactly what I was thinking as well. The eyes are fine imo, and I actually quite like how ‘human’ it looks, but the nose being bulbous + the large eyes just takes it a little too far. In what direction, even I can exactly figure out, but I feel like it would look much cleaner with a sharper nose
I think it looks cool. I don't understand the negativity, I guess the community needed something to pick on since it wasn't just a hive or scorn reskin for them to batter.
@@leaf2180 I think its a general clash in art design that does it. It's really cool design, but if you showed this to me out of context, I wouldn't be able to guess it was destiny.
@@doofers5003 my guy, thats The Witness. like HEAVY follower and controller of the darkness, the one that controlled and fooled the hive sisters. My guess is main enemy in lightfall or the overall ending enemy for Final Shape, to end the entire Light and Dark Saga.
@@Pixel-istic The Witness isn’t the darkness though. Savathun said it wears the darkness like a cloak. Wouldn’t the Winnower be a more fitting bad guy for the Final Shape?
I like how they made the Witness without a set gender. Its voice is a mixture of both male and female. Its face and body are both masculine and feminine. It really hits home the fact that they are a formless being, like claus and oryx described it.
It's clearly more male since crows voice is more dominant than the female voice or nay other voices, if with each word another voice took dominance then it would feel genderless and even really formless because we can't know if the body we see is its actual body.
Any cutscenes like this of the Witness slowed, muted with Radioheads 'Everything In Its Right Place' just ends up perfect, like way too perfect, not just the music itself but the lyrics of the song do a better job of explaining what's going on than Bungie does.
I have a recurring dream where I’m playing Destiny, fighting the Veil. That they are all blue mannequins with all their limbs attached to the wrong holes, a boss is a corridor of torsos, and they twist across the ground like music box ballerinas, fighting without animation. This is close enough.
I could go on for a while about the Veil enemy types i’ve dreamt of, because they are all consistently present, but this recurring dream always gets kind of weird and sexual towards the end so the veil always make me uncomfortable
I see some people saying " I'm glad they didn't make the witness entirely menacing" and such things, but I also see one or two people saying the eyes don't really fit. I am not going to say your wrong, as its a matter of opinion, but I am going to give my own opinion. in my mind, the eyes change the vibe of it completley; as such, I think if it had the completley pale eyes one person suggessted, or normal sized eyes, it would look to me more like a warlord, or a leader of an army. one could say that is what it is, but first and foremost, it would be a scientist. it does not fight, it observes, and it learns. this fits with its "name;" the witness. what is more, I feel the pale or normal sized eyes would be too obvious; bungie spent a long time building up to this, and then very clearly made an effort to subvert expectations.
@@kennonfleisher yeah, but just because it went wrong once, doesn't mean its bad every time. you could probably come up with more examples, but to that I would say subverting expectations has not gone wrong every time.
I mean being unusual and unique is one thing and letting something slide that's not good design is another thing, you can make something looks otherworldy, uncanny, and unusual while still fitting in with an art style. It's like putting a cyberpunk 3d model in a 2d cartoon mobile game, it just doesn't work out
Okay, possible crack theory here, take it all with a lake of salt. For most of the cutscene (up until 0:54), The Witness was addressing the Traveler, what with the mention of the game and such. Then It turns to face US, not the camera, The Player. The reason why I believe this is due to two things: One, The Whole 999 Light Shattered Throne fiasco where Savathun taunted us at the end, and the Lore for the armor Piece 'Skull of Dire Ahamkara', specifically the last part, going like this. "I came to find you, only you, because you're special. You're from somewhere real. And together we can burn our way back there. Can't we, o player mine?" That last sentence, O Player Mine, this means that Ahamkara had the ability to know of the player controlling the guardian, and being Ahamkara try to control us. In the WQ Campaign, we fight the illusion of an Ahamkara within Savathun's throne world, and as established earlier, she can make a presence within our world via Bungie's Blogs, using it to taunt us. Wouldn't it be not too far of a stretch to assume the Witness can sense us too? It's what I think, anyways, once again, take it with a lake a salt.
I've had a strong feeling, led only by hunch, that the raid will involve some kind of heavy fourth wall break. It seems like it would fit in the nature of "the queen of deception and lies" only to follow with an entity beyond space and time as we can comprehend
Not bad. Reminds me of Marvel's What If..? Where Ultron sensed the Watcher, a being not even present within the universe, but viewing from the other side, much like us
I was blown away. Its always super creepy when you can't tell if it's male or female. Just alien, empty and makes you feel uncomfortable. This was epic.
Exactly! I don't understand people who say that the witness looks the most alien out of every destiny race. I bet that race has visited earth long time ago and that's why we have so many pop culture reference to the big eyed grey aliens.
I see a lot of mixed feelings about the witness from a design point, I personally felt a lot of different emotions when I first seen this cut scene. This gave a sense of realism that I haven’t experienced in destiny. Which I applaud the visual art designer for this, as it was breath taking. All the detail.
The game is evolving the story the gameplay the DLCS everything to the expansions names to the characters this is the perfect game and let hope it would be for the w
I like that the character doesn't seem overly complex or overly simple, but also nothing like what we've seen before in destiny. And honestly the only thing that comes off as inherently evil about the witness is its hand gestures.

“You promised them life yet you only deliver death” The witness actually has a point. Where ever there is the Traveler there is war.
Not entirely the Traveler's fault since the Darkness is always chasing it. The ones truly responsible for all that war are those that serve the Witness.
@@TheKitsuneDuke but the traveller willingly goes to those places knowing the darkness will follow it. It's a moral dilemma:
Is it worth the short term enjoyment granted by the traveller if our descendents will live a life of suffering when the darkness attacks?
The way that they actually put the Lightfall raid in that exact room too
I like the design.

I’ve never been more excited for a dlc this is destiny’s infinity war
Even in the build to its appearance in the campaign just give me chills. Like the fact that it made a race as powerful and expansive as the hive seem like mere pawns, it’s just scary
From d1 to right now.

our guardians say "OOOKEEEYYY ı'm death!!!End of story" :D
It didn't though.
One of its pawns made all hive look like his own pawns.
Darkness is still faceless. Witness is not the creator of darkness. As savathun said, "It is not darkness, but something that wears it like a cloak".
might just be an envoy or a messenger of the darkness, i have a feeling if the darkness was to take on a body it would probably just be the veiled lady we see so much in the pyramid ships, i mean it makes sense, that it’s a statue that looks like it’s worshiped, so that’s probably what it might look like to any who sees it, including our guardians
The Witness is not the Darkness itself
@Tut Mut not really
I absolutely love the design, my only issue is the big puppy eyes. If the Witness had something like completely pale eyes it would have been much more ominous and lifeless which is kinda the purpose

Witch queen has answered allot of my questions. But I still have one more. What is the traveler.
If that figure really is the witness than the questions leads to if the traveler is one of the same.
Is the traveler a omnipotent sphere or a ship carrying someone else like the pyramids. We never saw a face ever in the pyramids and yet (spoilers)
There are cities and factories inside them as if someone can live there.
U should see one that says in the thumbnail "Went inside Traveler?Fencherch Everis.

Also he’s called the Witness so it makes sense he has big eyes to see things with
0:50 This entire background mirrors the scene in the Traveler's Dream cutscene from D2 with the pyramids dropping into the water above the crying statues. I wonder if that was originally symbolic of the collapse and if there's a connection here with the color choice

We're so close everyone, so close to fighting an agent of the actual darkness itself (I say agent because there is no confirmation that the witness is the darkness itself, the witness could merely be an agent of the darkness)
Lightfall, the DLC where our guardian may actually meet their end, the hints we gained from the vex timelines and our grave stone, all of that now points to this very moment.
Our guardian is an anomaly, mainly because their accomplishments by killing atheon, crota, oryx, taniks, the splicers, ghaul, etc, etc isn't something of a normal guardian (I know each of them, well most of them required 6 guardians but even then it still counts in some way)
We even managed to defeat savathun in battle, and while she could be resurrected by her ghost, it shows that despite the light she was granted, even she could not withstand our capabilities.

Its most likely that we will avoid our death that happend in the vex timeline
@Joaquin the gardener and winnower are two separate entities, the traveler i don’t think is the gardener, nor is the witness the winnower, i’d like to believe both the witness and traveler or whoever controls the machine is just envoys of they’re respective entities, we still have no clue what the gardener looks like, as for the winnower i willing to bet it’s the veiled lady we see in almost every pyramid ship we’ve been, it’s literally a statue, which seems to be worshiped as evident when our guardian communes with it, so yea my guess that is the winnower in it’s physical form

Has anyone seen Prometheus? The engineers were a species that created humanity in that film. The Witness has a similar appearance.
I like how they made the Witness without a set gender. Its voice is a mixture of both male and female. Its face and body are both masculine and feminine. It really hits home the fact that they are a formless being, like claus and oryx described it.
and even after you hear the main voices you can whispers of what it said follow up. so fucking good
It's clearly more male since crows voice is more dominant than the female voice or nay other voices, if with each word another voice took dominance then it would feel genderless and even really formless because we can't know if the body we see is its actual body.
