The "secret club" of runners smiling at each other is the only reason I keep going sometimes when I'm struggling. Currently working up to a 1h 10k. I'm so grateful for all the members in our club helping me get there
Thank you for normalising walking breaks, especially up hills!! We have similar reasons for running and it's so important to take time to soak up your surroundings 🥰 good luck with UTMB!
When I do a long run I have to admit I think of very little other than concentrating on my constantly changing surroundings. I only discovered running last year and find running empties the mind faster than anything else. Its just me and the pavement. I begin my run in the middle of a big busy city and after a while find myself in the countryside....then think to myself....I'm getting good at this!....and its wonderful. Loved your video Flora.
I find taking out the earbuds on a long run so refreshing! It just gives you a breather and allows you to think about all kinds of things and better appreciate your surroundings :) Some amazing tips in this vid, love it Flora!
There are so many things I can relate to here! That feeling of being overwhelmed just before halfway, before you turn around (after which morale goes up!); the sore toes phenomenon, I totally get sore toes on a really long run; the nutrition strategies are excellent, and just your whole outlook is an inspiration! Thank you.
What a great run, you'll smash your race!! I wish I lived in such a gorgeous place! I'm NO expert, but I've been learning in my own ultra training... I need to eat, every 30-45 minutes, from the beginning, PERIOD. No matter if I'm hungry or not, just ate or not, feel amazing or not. If I don't, I lose energy, slow down, get grumpy, my legs feel heavy, etc... then I eat something and a few minutes later I'm doing much better. I also do even my long runs late in the day, because I hate mornings, and because I'm so slow I know I'll be out all day long on race day, so I might as well get used to it. 😆 I'm so excited about your race, and loving your training videos!
Great video last week I did my 1st half mostly on canal paths in 149:39 I woz buzzing not sure how good the time is but for me it's about the distance your videos make me want either eat or run 🤣
Sitting down foam rolling for the past half an hour while watching your video. It has made the boring foam rolling enjoyable, thanks. Great tips as well. Long runs and podcasts are my fave. You ever thought about taking a water filter with you on long runs? I take my katdyn filter and screw it onto my inov8 bottle. Just in case I need to i can dip my bottle into a stream.
Thanks for watching, glad it made the foam rolling more bearable! I wouldn't drink the water in bristol even if filtered, but I'd definitely consider it for a longer run or race somewhere more pristine! In Chamonix people were filling up with glacier water and it looked great :)
Love running around paradise bottom! I'd recommend exploring around abbot's pool some nice trails there too. If you're out that way and out of water there's another café at the top of Ashton Court, where the bike hire/golf course is. Happy trails.
I'll look up your post on training in the heat.... but noticed you carry a lot of snacks.... as I run Ultras too I only carry Tailwind (its a powder you mix with your water) and you don't need gels with Tailwind..... try it... I started with HM's at first and found it was out of this world for slow released energy..... you only need to carry the powder if its an ultra to cover running out of water at stations
I also watch Sarah Place and Ben Parkes, the former is where I first heard of those gel blocks. 21k for me this past Sunday, nice and early. I ran in some shade recently and it was better than any electric fan.
i do love the secret club of runners..might be dying inside but seeing some other runner does help. Also as someone who is british, why do u use kilometers instead of miles?
That guava treat you had made me scream with joy 🤩 We call it Bocadillo and are an iconic Colombian treat but we often mix it with Arequipe (also known as dulce de leche) and now that I’m in the second leg of my marathon training plan, I might need to ask my parents to send me some bocadillos so that I can have some on my long runs! Where did you get yours? Feeling incredibly patriotic thanks to that bit of Colombia you had on this awesome video 🥰
Amazing how you find those incredible spots to run, who needs an art gallery/museum?! The bar run went well, teamed up with a team of 6 with a total combined of 183 km's so we received a personal keg haha.
Wow, I loved the scenery. It looks like you have a pretty good trail system out there. You held up pretty well and your pace was also pretty solid. I like your approach to enjoying / getting in the long run. I have a bike trail here (all paved) that is fairly flat and I can tons of miles in either direction but my route tends to be an out and back, unless I want to deal with car traffic / stop lights. There are some other spots that are popular with runners here but since the Jordan River Bike Trail (Salt Lake City) is practically in my back yard, I do that. I like to get a nod / wave / or hello from other runners. Most people are fairly sociable on the bike trail. There are some who are definitely heads down or don't want social interaction. I get it, but it's always nice to get a word of encouragement from one another. Enjoyed the video and thank you for taking us on your journey.
Good luck on your long back-to-back runs! It sounds insane, but I promise you will feel fantastic going into your race! I did back-to-back longs when I trained for a 50 Miler, and it felt slow/ouchie/ugh during most of training, but it made all the difference on race day!
Great to hear, thank you! It's the first time I've actually trained for something like this, so it's a whole new experience for me haha. Excited though!
Hey Flora, sorry I’m a bit late this time. One of my favourite parts of exercising is saying hi to other runners :). I love your tip about taking the time to sort something that’s uncomfortable before it becomes something a lot bigger. I always just think I can get through it and then regret it later 😬. I’m so happy it sounds like your training is going well :) and congrats on doing this run in that heat!!
I take a cooling towel on my runs in the hot weather. You just have to wet it a few times along the way. I wear it around my neck and let it drip down the torso. I gotta tell you it's a game changer!
On those super long days this summer, not once have I not thought I should have gotten out an hour earlier. xD Temps have been about the same here in the central US, with the addition of monstrous humidity. Nice job!
Sadly not! It was a hot day and as it was a little stall they didn't have a tap except hot water for tea! I was fine though, well hydrated up to that point and could have detoured to water if need be :)
Did 18 miles on Saturday half way we stopped at a shop and picked up some ice lollies. That was very much a first for me. Definitely not easy running in this heat far to humid.
Another great video! I love your honesty! Plus it’s handy that your runs recently have been fairly local to me (Weston super mare) do you have the route for this last run looked great! Sadly I’m not on strava, are you on garmin? It would be great to catch up for a long run sometime! 😀
Took this vlog out on my long run today! Thank you Flora for talking me through it. Made the run very enjoyable. It’s like running with a friend except u do all the hard work by talking and we just listen 😀. Running and talking is tiring. Thank you for doing it for ur community “secret runners club”
Thank you!! You'll get there, just keep training consistently! :) I think I've got some more specific educational vlogs further back - just keep looking through and You'll find some! Good luck :)
The longest ive run, in any training for a marathon, is 24.4miles. I have a marathon pb of 2hrs 48min, but the very long training runs, left my body so fatigued, that training at a high level, was difficult later in life. Once you past the 20-21mile distance, your body is fatiguing fast, and going near or beyond marathon distance, i find , tires me out too much, even if done at a slow leisurely pace. You can get away with such training when your young, say in your late twenties early thirties, but once you age, or turn fifty, similar training, will leave you too tired to train effectively.
Oh wow. Amazing to be doing the MCC at UTMB. Was this a ballot or invite? So excited for you. Would love to one day get to Charmonix just even to visit as it looks absolutely stunning!
Nice run ! How do you manage to go for a run in such "lonely" places ? Do you carry defensive items of some sorts or are you just confident enough to go without question ?
They're not lonely at all, they're just outside one of the biggest cities in the UK so there are plenty of people along the way :) and my boyfriend knows where I am at all times. If you're worried I've done a vlog on running in the dark which covers a lot of the same topics.
Hey! Yes I have had the first but didn't have any side effects. I ran the morning of the vaccine so I could take 2 days off afterwards (or more) if I needed to :)
Beautiful running footage & nice content, dear Flora! I am happy to find other running channels like mine, to share our passions, to receive ideas from each other, to learn from each other and so on. Fully watched, liked and subscribed dear friend!

@@FloraBeverley thanks for the reply. Just to say that I stumbled unannounced into your kitchen over a year or so ago and watched with great interest your vlog on what got you into running and your ITB. The encouragement your physio gave to use physical activity as part of the treatment of your ITB encouraged me to do the same and it seems to be working out.
