What do you think of this part of Scotland? I absolutely love Loch Muick and it looks spectacular at this time of year! For those of you using subtitles for the videos, I am still working on them and they will be available on this video within the next 12 hours, sorry for the delay! 🙏
23:18 -- Ruth! No -- you are not the "Average Joe" (or "Average Jane") -- you've been blessed with a curiosity to explore and learn more about your home country (and other places), and the talents to record it all and share it with us!!! Not "Average" at all!!!! Thank you so much for showing a place that *I* would love to have as a retreat from the business of life and duties every so often! And despite the grey skies, the leaves and trees and moors all nailed the Autumn colors....
Some years ago we were supporting students from our local college who were doing their D.of.E expeditions. We camped at Ballater, and had a picnic at the Linn of Dee. Truly lovely places. both.
A kirk is always a church, but not all churches in Scotland are referred to as kirks. The term "kirk" tends to emphasise a connection to Scotland's Presbyterian heritage and cultural tradition, while "church" is more universal. The origin of the word "kirk" comes from the Old Norse word kirkja and the Scots language. The origin of the word "church" comes from the Old English cirice, influenced by Greek kyriakon (meaning "the Lord's house").
What a great video. Scotland is my idea of what Heaven will be like. I love history too and appreciate all the history in your videos. The scenery is breathtaking! Thank you. Those highland cows are such precious looking creatures!
That was great Ruth. It's such a scenic area to visit. We stayed at Ballater a couple of years ago in January and we loved it, especially when it started snowing as the whole area looks magical. What wasn't magical was our drive home (well, to our next destination Edinburgh) as we had to drive down the 'Snow Road' from Glenshee in a blizzard just before they closed the snow gates. Safe to say I was bricking it! 😅 - and a quick edit to say well done in reaching 130k subs. Great stuff!
Linn of Dee is one of my favourites places in Scotland, just 6 miles outside Braemar and only visited by those in the know and serious walkers. I was there in June, drove over the hills from Grantown-on-Spey. A trip I have been doing since the late seventies/ early eighties. Done a few short walks from the car park over the years and in 1980 my brother did the walk through to Coylumbridge near Aviemore. I really love the Cairngorms.
Thank you Ruth, so lovely a trip for us all to see!! I was in this part of Scotland on my first trip as a young woman to meet my husbands family- I have loved Scotland ever since🏴 So good you can walk and explore the estate, so beautiful!! Take good care of yourself on your journeys 🥰
Loved watching this adventure as I spent a great deal of time visiting this area as I had family that lived in Braemar. Wish I had known about loch Muick it looks absolutely breathtaking. Thanks again Ruth, continued safe travels. Just a footnote highland cows are one of my favourite animals and they come in a variety of colours, I love their personalities.
I would so enjoy touring this area it's gorgeous with the towering Munro's and waterways , history . the trail is awesome , I am surprised they don't offer a Pitt toilet though for tourist to use at the hunt camp . they are simply made. ( but then again maybe it is due to being close to the water. ). The architecture is amazing ( I love history and old buildings ). spectacular estate and I thank you for taking us . fantastic walk about around the estate . Spectacular beauty of Scotland , proud that my family is from there.
I thought you have run out of places to film, but this one is incredible. I visited Pitlochry and Aviemore before but this area you covered looks even better. This would be next on my list if I were to travel up again. Thanks again for this insightful video :) Keep warm this winter :)
Good evening Ruth it’s only me - I absolutely love my Sunday evenings because I know your Vlog/video is on and I love your content - I hope you’ve managed to stay warm this week as the weather is absolutely freezing - but today is really quite warm but very very windy ~ my physical health is causing problems at the moment and I’m on two lots of antibiotics ~ I hope you have a great week - sending loads of love and hugs ~ Xxx Xxx
It has been SO cold! It was snowing a little bit up here in Scotland and was a bit icy for driving one morning. Hope you are keeping nice and warm too Louise!
Highland coos were originally black but the Victorians interbred to make the ginger/brown highlands coos that are so well known now. I prefer them black! We have some around us black and ginger ones. I really enjoyed this video, it’s an area I am keen to explore too. So was super interesting watching this video, as are all your videos. X
To start off with. How dare the "Highlanders Bakehouse" be closed. Ruth this is an amazing video. I will be watching it again. Your skill with filming some of the best Autumn images and landscapes I have ever seen. You are truly something else. Your timing with filming this location was perfect. Opening up all the information and history is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Loved the video Ruth and the area, I have a friend who lives in Ballater and he used to protect the royal family as a policeman, he is English and now settled in Ballater with his Scottish wife. I will definitely be visiting the area in 2025.🏴
Hey Ruth I stayed in Ballater for a week years ago it's a lovely little Scottish village and Balmoral and all round there I love it all round there 😀 thanks for sharing memories 😀 your definitely getting around a lot in Scotland 😊😊
Oh wow, amazing video Ruth, those views were spectacular Makes me want to get back to Scotland again!!!! Did you not get a bottle for sampling purposes???
Visited Balmoral, excellent, heard stories about tourists encountering the queen when she was out walking. Supposedly some didn't recognize her as she was dressed down, and they asked her for directions.
What a wonderful video Ruth! I loved seeing Balmoral and learning the Royal history. Your ability to show and teach us is wonderful. I also envy your ability to take the hikes and I live vicariously through you….although I’m still traveling quite a bit. Thank you!🇺🇸
New to your amazing channel Ruth. Been binging on some of your island trips and just love the solitude you find. Absolutely amazing. Wildness and whisky. What a girl.
We visited the area a couple of years ago in the spring. Nice to see some of the places we visited. The rooms you can see are mainly a photo/picture gallery so you didn't miss much. There is lots of weather to experience in Scotland as well as the views.
Hey Ruth, thanks for sharing Royal Deeside with all your followers, a truly lovely part of Scotland in my opinion, but being a local i guess I'm a little biased !!... safe travels my friend.Neil.😊x.
Hello Ruth, you're living my dream of seeing Scotland. My ancestors hail from Dumfries. I always wanted to go to Scotland but I am too sick now. So thanks for seeing it for me.
So many memories once again - Ballater station .... how to pronounce Muick .... I walked along that loch on the way back from climbing Lochnagar. A burglar alarm was going off at that hunting lodge. No burglars to be seen.
Firstly I'd like to say how much I appreciate these videos. I'm from southern England but I spent 3 years working in Scotland in the my 20s. i had the good fortune to be working on the Clyde, just on the edge of the Highlands, then up in the far north by Thurso. I spent a bit of time exploring, but looking back, I wish I'd spent more. In particular I wish I'd stayed for a bit longer in Caithness after being made redundant and hopped on a ferry to the Orkneys. Now it would take me a couple of days just to get to the far north, never mind the extra journey to Scara Brae. The best I've done in recent years to re-explore the west coast. I saw the video title 'royal areas' and of course I thought - it must include Royal Deeside. But I'm not sure there is another 'royal' area in Scotland! OK, there's the Royal mile, but not really an area. As to the royal family being 'controversial', OK I'm sure they are to some, but not quite as controversial as Scottish independence. I seem to remember there was a group of anti-monarchists at the coronation, but who else cares? Would anyone really want our own Macron? Never mind Trump! Ruth mentioned her electrical gadgets - I like her response to anyone questioning using hair straighteners while in a campervan :) I hate to objectify a female TH-camr, but Ruth always looks fantastic in her videos. I suppose most people would assume someone who spends her time outdoors wouldn't be concerned about her appearance. But for my part it is certainly appreciated :)
A very enjoyable video!👍👍 I have often visited that area and I hope to do so again sometime. In the 1980's I travelled from Glen Muick to Glen Doll, I did have my bike with me, but there were only a few parts which could be cycled, so I walked most of it.

Been loving your videos, Ruth! You've really been fuelling my wanderlust and made me want to do more adventures on my own. Thankfully I'm not too far from Scotland in the north of England, just need to pass my driving and then I can do some adventures up there of my own 😊 I've found myself looking at ferries to the Orkney islands or the outer Hebrides fairly often because of you haha 😅 I really love history and the great outdoors so your channel is just wonderful, and I really appreciate how much research and work you put into your videos. I hope you are well. Take care ☺️

Another excellent video Ruth any chance you could take a trip to Drum castle in Aberdeenshire I've seen it on the Internet apparently it's one of the oldest in Scotland Keep up the good work x
Ruth I have been to crathie church and been inside and I also have been round Balmoral castle. I was staying in Bramar in the Invercald Arms hotel . I use to go there every year in October but since certain circumstances I have not been allowed to travel.
That was interesting. I was hatched in Fort Gary, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1952. I got a Green Card to live and work in US. Hello from rocky coast of Maine, US. November 24, 2024,
We had a lovely visit to Ballater. We went on a Land Rover Safari, which was a highlight being totally different from Land Rover Safaris in South Africa, where we lived at the time of our visit. Ruth your diesel heater gave us food for thought! we researched and found - Are they diesel or electric? They are both, using an electrical charge to spark the initial diesel combustion and power a fan to spread the heated air. Enjoy your travels, stay warm.
That Land Rover trip sounds brilliant. Did you see any deer? The heater has been pretty good. I linked the original heater install in the video description which shares more info!
Hi Ruth! I love going on your adventures! I visited Balmoral in May of 2023 and it was absolutely breathtaking. The Autumn colors are gorgeous. A quick question that seems to be somewhat argumentative…do you put clotted cream on your scone before the jam or vice versa? Lol. Keep all of us traveling and be safe.
Did you manage to go inside? Haha good question, I probably would put it on first but generally tend to have butter instead of cream. What is your preference?
@@ruthaisling I was able to tour the Castle Ballroom which was full of family memories and stunning art. I loved it and would most definitely recommend the visit. I believe the way to go for my scone would be with the cream or butter☺️ first. Lol. Thanks for sharing. Stay warm!!

Thanks for the etymology lesson. I did wonder about that.
Presumably both words have the same origin if you go back far enough.
Interesting, I see connections with the Dutch word "kerk" and the German "Kirche"
There are so many amazing photos of Jimmy Saville at Balmoral with his great friend Charles. Hunting, shooting and fishing.
Ruth, I loved this video. You have turned into a real pro with editing, camera work, etc. etc.
