Many argue that after season 5 the Thomas episodes started to go downhill. Maybe I pick off after season 12. But the magic and charm or Rusty & The Boulder is never seen in todays twisted Thomas empire, Sodor drift has sadly seen Thomas lose his story telling focus.
Yeah, especially since a lot of episodes and specials are unrealistic now. I mean, Thomas jumping off a bridge? That would be impossible in real life! And don't get me started on Big World Big Adventures...
Charlie Young Big World Big Adventures is the end of Thomas and Friends as we know it. Henry and Edward are out. There will no longer be a narrator. The engines and freight cars can now tilt unrealistically- like tilt from one side off the track. Thanks Mattel for ruining it.
Yes. I'm rewatching the whole series. I'm at the Nitrogen era and i'm not impressed with seasons 13 and 14, so i'm not making any hopes that season 15 will be better.
@@ThomasWoodenRailway the scene where Rusty, Rheneas and Skarloey were chased by a giant boulder is a reference to the movie Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Maybe if Oliver was kept as a character in this set, the road pieces could have been switched with track so that Oliver can ride along and Rusty could go through the other larger loop of track.
Another set of my childhood. The Boulder Mountain set, and most of the pieces I think I still have in storage. The set was a gift for my 9th birthday, and it soon became part of my greater wooden railway collection.
Nice review and I do agree with you that Butch should've replaced Oliver in the set, however I would go a few steps further to really make the set look more like the actual episode. For starters I would put in a shocked Skarloey and a shocked Rheneas because those two characters appeared in the episode, and they are the same gage as Rusty. Second of all, after boulder mountain and before the crossing, there should be a siding so Rusty can avoid Boulder. Third of all, another siding should be added off of the main line, with some bumpy track similar to the James and the trouble with trees track, but instead of a falling tree and a falling sign, it's a collapsing water tower. The fourth thing to do would be to replace the arched stone bridge with an actual viaduct. The fifth thing I would do is put in a three way switch on the third corner. The left line would be a siding that ends in a ramp so Rheneas can crash of the line and avoid Boulder, the middle line would lead to a collapsing shed, and the right track would go back to the quarry. The sixth thing to do would be to give Rusty a nervous face, because being around Boulder makes him nervous. The seventh thing I would do is for the road section, a road switch that goes past Rusty's siding and ends at the quarry with a road to surface ramp. The final things I would add are 2 white cargo cars with troublesome truck faces to represent slate cars, 3 rock pieces, 2 of Lorry's flatbeds with cargo pieces, Lorry 2, 2 crew members, 4 quarry workers, and Boulder's new hill so the wind could carry his sighs to the place where he once stood, proud and silent.
I was watching and thinking, why not include Butch instead of Oliver in this set, but then you stated that and I was like, great minds think alike. LOL. Thanks for sharing. Love your episodes and reviews. Cheers from the Meridian & Southern RR
Maybe oliver is in this set because his theme sounds a lot like the indiana Jones theme and rusty and the boulder is very similar to raiders of the lost ark (because of the boulder) Maybe Oliver's inclusion is a little nod to indiana Jones so really they should keep oliver in and see how many people notice
I do not know why they added Oliver in this set. He was never seen in that episode. The engines that were featured in that episode were rusty, Thomas, skarloey, rhieneas, and Percy.
As usual, fantastic review! I agree completely with you, while there are several flaws, such as Oliver's rather strange inclusion as well as the pretty useless road tracks and it's very small size, it's nonetheless a great set, something that you can have fun with for hours. Your improvements are perfect, the inclusion of Butch as well as another character that appeared such as Percy, Skarloey, or Rheneas could improve this a lot. That being said, it's still a really great set, and I personally really want this set, and I'm getting it as soon as I find a cheap offer for it. Anyways, another fantastic review, and Merry Christmas!
I do think this set is pretty good and a lot of people have a fond spot in their heart for it as it was sold for many years. I just think it could use a few improvements to become a truly great set. :)
0:250:290:500:54 Love the Boulder mountain destination after the deluxe roundhouse (and turntable), special engine shed, works engine repair shed, useful engine shed and before the Sodor scrub and shine, Sodor bay bridge, super cruiser and rolling gantry crane.
The set's box included an advertisement about the video "Spills & Chills & Other Thomas Thrills" on DVD and video. In addition, I used to have this set when I was little, and I don't know what happened to the 3 Character Cards that were included: Rusty with the Construction Cars, Oliver, and Thumper.
You should make an episode where Thomas becomes a Thomas Wood item and infects the other engines. Then have the remaining engines try to stop the plague
I always loved this set. Unfortunately, my "breakaway building" lost it's track male end connector, as did many of my pieces with that tip from the era like my "water tower" and "stop and go house". I did and do love this set though and I do remember thinking Thumper was useless on the roadway due to his treads. Another good piece I liked to pair the boulder mountain piece with is the later released "Runaway Boulder Expansion Pack", I think it's called that, as the builder travels farther and it was fun to have two boulders. I enjoy this set though nonetheless. -Thomas Blue
I think Percy would be a nice addition because unlike Oliver, he actually appeared in the episode. He is very recognizable among children and a main character in the show.
Fun fact: the episode that this set is based off was inspired by the opening scene at the beginning of the Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford movie Raiders Of the Lost Ark.
I wonder if there can be an episode about Boulder mountain, Boulder, Rusty Thomas, Oliver, The Narrow Gauge engines, James, Rosie, Percy, S.C.Ruffy and a few other character's in it plus two songs?
I loved this set when I was a kid but taking another look at it, like you said it is a little bland. It did get me some characters that I didn’t have but I think another road vehicle was definitely needed! Excited to see your next discussion. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
There was a set that came put arojnf the same time called the mountain overpass set. It has butch in it. Interestingly it also featured a mountain and the level crossing piece as well. It was kinda random as the only charecters it had were butch and percy. Maybe it was supposed to be a part two to this set.
I know exactly what set you're talking about. That's an interesting theory - based on what characters and destinations are included, maybe it was intended that you combine the two sets?
ThomasWoodenRailway I could definetly see it. The only difference was the mountain in the Mountain overpass set was one of the first 'sights n sounds'/ deluxe wooden railway items. Both sets were really simplistic in ways and combining them would have been amazing. I remeber both being around $100 though so thatd probably be too pricey for most families. Also if my memeory serves me correctly, they stopped making the original oliver in 2005ish (except for a few sets and packs along with a limitied rerelease in 2007) so your theory on the surplus olivers definetly makes sense
It's possible, although I don't think it's likely. The episode came out in 1998 and this set was introduced in 2003 so they had plenty of time to incorporate the right characters.
I always tried to get the Boulder Mountain set when I was you, but now that I look at it, I think the only best thing to get from the set is the mountain, Thumper and Boulder. (I've already got Rusty and Oliver)
My thought about what to change with the set is that instead of Oliver, use Percy or Edward with a flatcar and breakdown crane as he is seen in the episode, bringing Thumper to the Quarry. I also agree with adding Butch as although he is a cameo character, his presence in the layout is needed to clean up the mess. I also think that instead of adding a roadway, replace it with another loop of railroad track for the standard gauge engines. With these ideas, anyone can recreate the episode as well as many of their favorite scenes.
This set needs more characters: Skarloey, Rheneas, Thomas, Percy and Edward. And the fat controller himself. And the viaduct bridge, and the engine sheds and the water tower.
Another great review! I have the mountain (not the set), and though it's really cool, I have a lot of trouble getting it to fit in to my layouts. (Although the Sawmill and Dumping Depot is a lot tougher! xD )

Well I don't usually collect stuff like this because it's actually not my thing I like the character's just like y and I'm focused on the characters too, U just said that it's not much and y just said it's big enough to be convincing in your opinion and that's fine At least Thumper, Rusty, Oliver & Butch are still good.
1 this set is my bucket list because of how cool it looked rusty and the boulder was one of my favorite episodes and the episode was based off Indiana Jones 1 and it’s one of my favorite movies 🍿 even though it’s not really much I really want that set
In My Opinion It's a Great Set However they should've made it larger Instead of a Circle Track They should've added a Shed For Thomas and Percy And a Viaduct Bridge Rheneas is on When the boulder chases him And a Turn Rusty takes And the set should've had more characters I agree they should've had Butch They also should've had more characters So kids could re-enact the episode They would need A Thomas A Percy A Skarloey A Rheneas We also can't forget Edward And Thumper could be on the flatbed

Maybe if Oliver was kept as a character in this set, the road pieces could have been switched with track so that Oliver can ride along and Rusty could go through the other larger loop of track.
Instead of Oliver, I'd have chosen Percy, as a shed he's nearby gets crushed.
Not only that but they could also give him a custom scared face.
I thought the same thing.
I think they got Oliver confused with Percy because they are both green...
Percy Is Here your not dead.

They were in that episode
I personally like this set
I do too! But some elements included just make you scratch your head.
Yea, honestly instead of oliver, they could’ve used Percy or Skarloey, they also could’ve included butch
I just watch Shed 17.......
I will never look at this channel ever again unless I go through allot of mental and physical therapy
I have that set. I think the reason they put Oliver in that set because he was later redesigned and released as a LTM Train

I frickin luv Rusty & The Boulder
i also want to say terance was in that episode aswell just for a few seconds in a sceen but im to lazy to tell wich scene it was in

If they have a bunch of Oliver’s, why not put him in a set of his own? Like a runaway set from Busy going forward or the scarp yard scene in escape.
I don’t have the set, but I have Boulder mtn.
Can You Do The Happy Birthday Mr Percival Set
I don't have all of the pieces to that set right now but if I ever acquire them, I'll be sure to do a review on it!

I think Edward would be a great match where is brings thumper but he has his own set with Spencer in later years....
My mom promise that I'll get the set on my birthday but I never got the set 😢
Awesome Rev
Thanks!
Merry christmas twr!
Merry Christmas to you as well!
can u do thomas and the magic railroad 100 piece set I want to 2onder why Burnett or junior wasn't in the set.
I'd like to do a review on that set but I don't have all of the necessary pieces right now.
do a review of the gold mountain mine sets

I don't have that set right now but if I ever get it, I'll be sure to do a review on it! Thanks for your suggestion!
How did you put all of them together?
Great job:)
Oliver was not selling so they where going to add Oliver instead of percy

Probably, if there was no other way to get the old versions.
I always wanted this set
I have this set!
I would thought they would but Edward in the set or Thomas Percy Rheneas or Skarloey
I always thought the boulder was knock of Indiana Jones because the boulder can roll just the boulder in the Indiana Jones movies.
I remember when I was little they sell the set at Marshall’s

I was thinking of the same idea of including butch rater than oliver
please do magic railroad 100 piece set.
The set should've included Butch, Edward, Thomas, Skarloey, Rheneas, and Percy
Ben Bruns and they definitely needed colapsable shed and make it a little bigger
Awsome reviw
Im getting this for my birthday and its in a few days
1 this set is my bucket list because of how cool it looked rusty and the boulder was one of my favorite episodes and the episode was based off Indiana Jones 1 and it’s one of my favorite movies 🍿 even though it’s not really much I really want that set
I would have included Percy bc he actually appeared in the episode.
No. 1 Thomas
YOUR THE BEST!
Thanks! :)
I Just made a new channel, TheWoodenWilbert. Could I have some tips on this type of thing?
Story wise I feel like we deserve a prequel n sequel to boulders story
i think Edward with a flat car should have been included instead of Oliver
But he was not in the episode as well
Ok he was sorry this was 4 months ago
Actually, Edward did appear in the episode, but only for a brief time.
Yeah, Butch would have been more appropriate.
In My Opinion
It's a Great Set
However they should've made it larger
Instead of a Circle Track
They should've added a Shed
For Thomas and Percy
And a Viaduct Bridge
Rheneas is on
When the boulder chases him
And a Turn
Rusty takes
And the set should've had more characters
I agree they should've had Butch
They also should've had more characters
So kids could re-enact the episode
They would need
A Thomas
A Percy
A Skarloey
A Rheneas
We also can't forget Edward
And Thumper could be on the flatbed
