If the movie was successful enough, both critically and financially, this set would have been a lot more popular along with any other merchandise that are related to the movie. Well, one can dream.
I think the critical panning the movie got says worse about the critics themselves than it does about the movie, frankly. I think that honestly the biggest real flaws with the movie were lack of accessibility for people not familiar with Shining Time Station, and reliance on some of Allcroft's personal interpretations of the Thomas universe without making _those_ accessible to people not on the same wavelength. All of that being said, I think the set wouldn't have lasted that much longer than it already did (2000-2001 in most places, 2000-2003 in Australia and Japan) regardless. The hype it cashed in on would have run out of steam in a couple years even if the movie had been a box office hit, plus it's on the plain side as large/large piece sets in the range go. It's worth noting that the two main new engine characters from the movie, Lady and Diesel 10, were massively popular and successful in the merchandise, despite the box office disappointment. In the Wooden Railway range alone, Lady lasted 2000-2010 (with a 2014 reintroduction) and Diesel 10 became a permanent fixture.
The film was well-received by young children on both sides of the Atlantic, while the critics disliked the film. It did became successful with merchandising, receiving two nominations, and achieved a cult following in recent years.
I remember wanting this set when it was released to my local Target. As for updates to the layout, I like your idea to add a siding with a buffer to show the magic buffers,, but I also think that, if the Muffle Mountain was given a tunnel portal, place a golden buffer on the "human side" of the set and on the "sodor side", have bushes next to the track to hide the entrance to the railroad and a normal straight piece followed by the switch, representing the scene where Lady comes to sodor. I also agree about adding a barge that catches Diesel 10, but as for the curved viaduct, if wooden Railway could've possibly try to create something similar to the collapsing suspension bride from Calling all engines, (which of course was created afterwards) but this bridge has the middle section break apart, then this set would be perfect for everyone who would want able to recreate the chase scene. Adding Mr.Stone is also a good idea as well.
A note about Muffle Mountain: being a modification of the Mountain Tunnel means it can be used to recreate the scene of Thomas rolling down the mountain. As far as improvements to the set, here are my thoughts: * A siding with a bumper to represent the Magic Buffers would have been a bit flowbreaking in my opinion. I think a better way to represent them here might have been a new piece with a swinging "buffers" gate (possibly a modified version of the Highway Crossing, or maybe something new that could be set under a piece of track so as to save space). * Agreed about including Burnett Stone, although Zany Brainy might have called dibs on including character figures. Those might even have been ZB's idea to start * A garbage barge modified from the Sodor Bay cargo ship is also an interesting thought, would have been neat. * More plants would have been cool. * There is one piece of rolling stock that this could have used: Either a Gray Troublesome Truck, or redecorated Coal Car, in order to represent the coal truck. * Possibly two extra straights, and a redecoration of the Single Stone Tunnel with shrubbery lithographs to represent the overgrowth on the Magic Railroad.
Giving it some more thought, too many more inclusions would likely have driven the price up past the starting $100. But they could definitely have stood to include a coal truck. I also think the track plan could have used some tweaks, namely a T-switch on the non-viaduct side of the layout (with a 3½" switch on the other end of the mountain to keep the switch curvatures symmetrical so things lined up neatly, and any other pieces needed to make it fit). That would let engines get on the mountain from either side, or go from the mountain to either side. Two t-switches would be ideal since it would allow such regardless of direction... but that would stretch the Sodor side because of the ascending track, and probably lead to a higher price. Of course, nothing says a 2nd T-switch and the stuff to make it fit couldn't have been part of an expansion pack.
My favorite Thomas movie, to this very day, despite the controversy. I would've loved this set, and the only other things that I would've included were things such as additional trees, and the human characters from the 100 piece set, along with the barge and siding that you mentioned.
I got this set as soon as it was available, and I still have most of the pieces including the iconic characters other than a Burnett stone figure. Burnetts house has one of the stickers torn off after years of storage and use, yet if I pulled out all those pieces I had, I could reassemble it. Thank you so much Thomas wooden railway for reviewing these sets. It brings back fond memories of childhood.
ThomasWoodenRailway you’re welcome. I still have a lot of my own Thomas wooden railway items stashed away, and I even took a picture of a lot of the pieces laid out when my parents were relocating.
The fact that Shining Time Station doesn’t have any sort of label on it, and even has a map of Sodor on it, could easily make it pass for a station on Sodor, dontcha find? *wink wink nudge nudge*
Greetings from England, I really adore the Muffle Mountain Set and I also love watching Thomas & the Magic Railroad. I remember first seeing the movie in July 2000 about 17 years ago, when I was only 6 years old, they were great times, I still watch Thomas & the Magic Railroad to this day on my DVD. I may not have the train set, but I still have the Wooden Thomas, Lady & Diesel 10. That was a fantastic review, Thomas Wooden Railway, keep up the good work. Kind regards Jordan Shingler 😉
It’s a good set for children, but in my opinion it could be inside of the muffle mountain pice an interior of brunette stone’s workshop and inside o the workshop like a tunnel where at the end it could be a little like the action canyon set where the train can go out rushing in the wooden rails. The other part it could be the magic buffers: it could be like the same golden track but this time it could be like a tunnel, a plastic green transparent tunnel where you can see the trains going to the buffers and go directly to the other side of the track, the pice of the buffers could be like a wall pice stick on the plastic tunnel that when a train can go inside the buffer pice will be pushed up when the train tries to go inside and it could be the same thing in the other side ;)
To be honest, I can't hate Thomas & the Magic Railroad. The reason why I'm defending it is because of the Director's Cut itself, which would've made the movie better than it already was. Besides, I've seen worse. *cough* Calling All Engines and Misty Island Rescue *cough* !
As much as I respect your opinion, this is my least favourite special, not even the director's cut (which I will agree was miles better than the final film), I still dislike it. Misty Island and Calling All Engines were better IMO!
@@TrevortheTrainFan Fair enough. Personally I read the original script and honestly it wasn't doing much for me. It just doesn't feel like Thomas. Mainly in terms of one thing. The fact that Sodor is reestablished as an alternate dimension that is connected to the real world via magic warp zone buffers that are powered by gold meth, just doesn't feel right. The Island of Sodor was a fictional world sure, but it still felt like a real place that young kids could imagine as a real place somewhere in Northern England, so for this movie to suddenly reestablish Sodor as another universe, is a bit disrespectful to the original source material. Its especially sad because the film was directed by Brit Alcroft herself. Sure we could blame the American test audiences all we want, but even if this film were tested in the UK (Thomas's primary audience) the UK audience would probably object to everything about this movie's plot. Heck I actually came up with my own version of what could've been the film. 1) Instead of all this magic buffer bullshit, maybe have Muffle Mountain be an unknown mountain area located on the mainland? And Thomas and Percy are asked by El Fatso De Hatto to deliver special cargo to the mainland? 2) Lady already have a face and communicates with Burnett Stone? 3) Thomas's motivation throughout the entire movie be that he's sick of being pushed around by Gordon and James and just wants a bit of respect from the bigger engines. That way "Little Engines Can Do Big Things" can be more then just a Sharron Miller style catchphrase? 4) Percy's motivation being that he looks up to Thomas and how Thomas was always sorta like a big brother to him? And Thomas tries to be brave to give Percy a bit of confidence, and has Percy asks Thomas "Why are you so brave?" And Thomas could be all like "Somebody has to be.". Building their friendship. 5) Instead of being a 13 year old Mara Wilson, Lilly is instead played by a 29 year old Alice Evans who in this rewrite is Thomas's driver. And her motivation is to find Lady as a way to help Burnett restore and bring them both back to Sodor? 6) Instead of being Mr Conductor's idiot cousin, Junior, Michael E. Rodgers plays the role of Patch who is both Percy's driver, as well as Lilly's husband, but he does keep the same personality as Junior from the finished movie as in he's this movies comic relief. 7) Diesel 10 could be an old enemy of Thomas who used to bully Thomas when Thomas used to live on the mainland? Not only that but PT Boomer is not only an enemy of Burnett, but is also an enemy of Lilly as when Lilly was young, PT Boomer crashed Lady and caused Burnett to move away from the Island of Sodor to Muffle Mountain as Lilly and Burnett used to have a close relationship and now he had to move away from the Sodor to Muffle Mountain to keep Lady safe, so now PT Boomer is back for revenge, so now its a race to Muffle Mountain to help Burnett save Lady before PT Boomer and Diesel 10 can destroy her. 8) Both Thomas and Lilly have their own motivation for why they want to help Lady. 9) After Diesel 10 is sent away in disgrace and PT Boomer hauled off to jail, Burnett and Lady are offered to help work on Thomas's branchline where they can now work the rails in peace and harmony? 10) Like I said, instead of Sodor being established as an alternate dimension connected by a magic railway portal, Muffle Mountain is an unknown mountain located somewhere on the mainland? That way it keeps the realism aspect of Sodor in tact. 11) Finally, tell me if you like this cast. John Bellis as Thomas Ben Crompton as Percy Alice Evans as Lilly Micheal E. Just a thought, you could paint some ordinary wooden tracks gold if you're going to have the Magic Railway appear in your future series like it has in the past. I think that would make it easier to tell when another engine visits it.
Did you also forget that there's a special button on the viaduct that when pressed after Thomas and Lady go over it, it makes it seem like Diesel 10 is falling off the bridge like in the movie, because after watching, Oliver Duck's review, that part was mentioned.
My piece of the viaduct didn't have a button on it because it originally came from the Curved Viaduct destination, not this set. I just included that piece so I would have the entire set and be able to do a review on it.

Just a thought ...Itd be even better if the buffers were gold and the gold piece was connected to the buffers. One more small addition thatd be great would be the windmill where mr conductor ends up at and a mr conductor
they also could have put the shining time billboard on the station too so children would know it's shining time and also what would have been great if they did a wooden version of the rainbow sun aka strasburg #475 from thomas and the magic railroad to put in too
The block the station sits on. would you be able to post the measurments of it please? lost my original one from this set and was thinking on making another
I think that this big set looks awesome, but I think it could be better with a few additions. First of all, on Muffle mountain, instead of having a picture of the workshop, what I would do is have an opening in the hill big enough to hold lady. Next, there need to be a few more engines, figures, destinations, and pieces of rolling stock. I would give most of the engines a flip-face function, excluding Diesel 10. Since he is meant to be extremely aggressive, I think his angry face could do the job well enough on its own. Engines and other viechles: Thomas(flip-face: happy to shocked), Lady(flip-face: happy to shocked), Diesel 10(angry), Splatter(flip-face: happy to angry), Dodge(flip-face: happy to confused), James(flip-face: happy to angry), Toby(flip-face: happy to worried), Percy(flip-face: happy to angry), George, Bertie, Cranky, Harold, a rail fairy, a cargo ship, a barge, and and Terry the tugboat. Rolling stock: Annie, Clarabel, Henrietta, 7 scrap cars, 3 fuel tankers, 4 troublesome coal trucks, 2 mail cars, 2 black cargo cars with sneezing powder crates, 2 troublesome break vans(salt van design), S.C.RUFFY, a barrel cars with 2 sugar barrels, 2 gold dust cars, and 5 sodor line cabooses. Destinations: Kelleby station, Diesel 10's mountain, the scrapyard, Tidmouth sheds(4 berths and with a scaffolding and hole details), the docks, the windmill, the well, the magic Railroad(gold tracks), some gate like buffers, Shinning Time station, a jail building, 4 houses, a coal hopper, 2 water towers, and 2 curved viaducts. Figures: Mr. Conductor, Junior, Lily, Burnett stone, 7 passengers, 4 workers, Patch, Mutt, a welcome to Shinning Time sign, and 12 trees.

There's actually wooden figures of the movie characters.
Yes, but they were included in a different set.
Oh I love the magic railroad
I wish I had this set
Just a thought ...Itd be even better if the buffers were gold and the gold piece was connected to the buffers. One more small addition thatd be great would be the windmill where mr conductor ends up at and a mr conductor
Luv it!
Thanks for watching!
Great video
I have the Thomas and the magic railroad on DVD +VHS TAPE
I miss having this set
Also did you have splatter and dpge cuz they rolled up with diesel 10
Review the bremdom bay shipping co. Set
4:32 hey that wooden railway figure doesn't even look like Burnett stone
Nice set
You could add a tunnel or shed to this set to recreate the scenes of lady being stored at the beginning of the movie.
they also could have put the shining time billboard on the station too so children would know it's shining time and also what would have been great if they did a wooden version of the rainbow sun aka strasburg #475 from thomas and the magic railroad to put in too
Did you know that that the original Thomas and friends tv show episodes were part of shining time station, or at least they were in North America.
I always wanted this set and the one with mike and the other hill with the 3 bridges never got either though mostly for the hills
I know Thomas and the Magic Railroad is far from realistic or what the series is about, but I really liked it as a kid still
I Think We Can All Agree That TATMR isn't The Best TTTE Movie In Existence, But It is Definitely Somewhat Good, Entertaining And Nostalgic.
Thomas and the Magic Railroad, celebrating 20 years! (2000-2020) 🎊🎉🎂🚂🎬🎥🎞️🎟️🍿
Nice review. I love the set. How do you get the set?
Thanks! I've gradually picked up the individual pieces to this set over the years on eBay.
ThomasWoodenRailway wow. Are you going to use Shining Time Station in your series?
You could use a tunnel to recreate the hidden magic rail road scene but would be tricky to use a camera in there.
I went to my grandma's house and I watched the movie a lot good job
The block the station sits on. would you be able to post the measurments of it please? lost my original one from this set and was thinking on making another
I like that set its my favorite thomas set.
I'm Getting This Set For Chrismas
Awsome reviw
Thanks!
Cheryl b24 love ❤
The Reason TATMR Was Bad Is Because The Workers Were Not Doing What She Wanted So She Quit The Franchise Entirely
JesiahProductions nope, it's because Soccer Moms saw P.T. Boomer as " too scary" for little kids. They forced Britt to change the script.
Thomas Wooden Railway when are you
going to start your new series
Love it and is this rare?
Yes, the entire set in completed form is rare.

"Thomas, Lady, and Diesel 10. Arguably the most important characters in the movie.".
ME: LMAO Dude did you even see the movie?! Thomas barely had any significance in in the plot! XD (Great review though. Keep up the good work.)
If you cut out the Shining Time and human character parts, Thomas is an important character.
Top 10 important characters ranked
1st lady
2nd diesel 10
3rd burnett stone
4th Mr conductor
5th lily
6th junior
7th patch
8th thomas
9th percy
10th james
The actual sodor engines make up most of the bottom
I had no idea this even existed!
Great review starting a series soon can I get tips
Just keep at it and have fun! :)
Thx I am starting a collection of my own
The main villain in the movie was Toby he caused confusion and delay and tried to murder splatter, dodge, and diesel 10
I would like to own the lady and diesel ten tomy chase set thing that comes with unmotorized splodge
Where You found this súper old, rare and imposible to found?
