  • In this tutorial, you will learn how to effectively use Channel Masking to create selections that are significantly better and more detailed, even on the smallest objects such as hair.
    Additionally:
    Utilizing this method allows us to create selections which even allow a new light source and background to pass through fabric naturally, convincing the viewer that our composites are "real."
    If you have any questions, please leave a comment!! There is a lot of information in this one, and I am excited to help you learn!!
    **This tutorial is intended for those with basic photoshop knowledge on layers, masking, and general tools.

    Hi Chris. That was a really great in-depth tutorial! That being said for those looking at an easy way to get a good hair mask do this: as a seasoned retoucher, I find that the select and mask and refine tools in the latest versions of Photoshop work fantastically. To do hair simply make a selection slightly inside the hairline of the persons head and face, then choose select and mask. Then choose refine hair and then just use the refining brush and output as a channel or selection. This takes only a matter of seconds usually.

      Appreciate the compliment!! I agree that photoshop is definitely improving and this isn't in any way required or the "only" way to do it. Select and mask with refine tools can be more than reasonable for many jobs and I use it for composite pieces that aren't my main subject! :)

    Absolutely brilliant!! Two questions, why don’t you recommend shooting on white backgrounds, and why don’t you recommend using soft round brushes?

    • @AnEtherealFire
      @AnEtherealFire  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Great questions!!! I'll cover why I don't recommend white in part 2, but the gist of it is that the white seeps into the translucent fabrics and hair strands and gives them a halo-ing effect that you have to correct for, while also providing a secondary source of reflected light that isn't natural.
      As for soft round brushes: NOTHING in life is perfectly soft or round. Everything in reality has texture to it, so when you use a soft round brush while compositing, the viewers' eye can detect that something is unnatural. If you've ever looked at an image and immediately thought "That looks photoshopped, but I dont know why", often times it is because your eye can detect the perfect nature of the soft round brush and knows something is wrong. Instead, I recommend using a textured paint brush OR a fog/smoke brush since the patterns aren't perfect, making it hard for the viewers' eye to detect!!
