Agreed 💯, plus the narrator's perception of Ellison not being athletic enough is inaccurate . Quickness, solid agility, and leaping assets he possessed , his pronounced athletic vice was big man traditional strength and conventional bulk . Poor schemes that didn't align him properly, making him primarily a post up close to the rim player ,when he should have been implemented in a mid to high range post dynamic.,only going down low ,exploiting smaller defenders on defensive switches ,or cumbersome unathletic bigs coming in the game off the bench occasionally.Injury's obviously was his obvious second career vice which hampered his development . Pervis Ellison isn't by any stretch of the imagination the worst NBA number one pick .

How on Earth is Anthony Bennett not the ABSOLUTE consensus worst number 1 pick? I mean, some of the other guys just either got hurt early or at least went on to be average role players. Bennett has done neither. He just totally sucked from day one and never improved at all and was out of the league in no time. I mean he didn't even look as good as an undrafted late season addition to a last place team plagued with injuries who were in there 3rd season of tanking for picks. Like the worst player on a team that would finish 2 and 80. He would probably finish out his contract working in the concession stand

Definitely not the worst number one pick of all time and by a longshot not the worst. Injuries robbed a lot of his abilities to maximize his skills. I know you mention he was short for a center, but he did have long arms that helped make up for a lot. If he did not get hurt so much, I think he would have made a few All-Star teams, I don't know if he would have been Hall Of Fame great. He was a not a big of a bust as many make him out to be, he was nowhere near regarded as good as other big men drafted number one (Ewing, Olajuwon, Sampson, O'Neal) during that era.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. So, I know a LOT about "bad #1 and #2 picks." Portland has the WORST: LaRue Martin. Bob McAdoo, Julius Erving, and Paul Westphal were available. Portland traded LaRue Martin to Seattle, for "future considerations." Seattle waived him before he even played a game for them! It was very considerate of Seattle, to take him off of Portland's hands. Then there is Greg Oden. Now, this is different: "Considering who was AVAILABLE after him, I also give some mention to Portland taking Mychal Thompson #1. Because, #6 that same draft? Larry Bird. Portland is SO stupit when it comes to the #1 or #2 pick. I SWEAR, if Portland had the #1 pick in 1992, they would have drafted Adam Keefe or Alphonso Ellis or Gus Witherspoon.

Woah Woah Woah there now, Rice - "one dimensional?!" Rice back then was anything but one-dimensional. He was great at driving t the the hoop and finishing at the rim both at college, and when at Miami and Charlotte. He's nothing like a Reggie Miller, or other "one-dimensional" shooters. Not to mention back then prior to his knee surgeries and him joining the Lakers, he was also a pretty solid defender at the SF as well.

Not even close. I personally don’t like calling players busts when injuries were the primary cause of their lack of production. But he has an MIP award and lasted 11 years, without having to go overseas or to the CBA (G league of the time).

He played in the wrong era as well. Today he would have went through a Blake Griffin/Joel Embiid career route. He would have sat his rookie year to get healthy, then came back on a minutes restriction. who knows what could had happened if he was drafted now a days.

Anthony Bennett by far!!. Pervis was dominant in national championship over Duke as a sophmore, when soph's never were that good. Bennett was an unknown unless u followed mountain west conf. Thetes no way ay the time, you wouldn't think he was 'the pick'

He is Pervis Out Rebounded Again Ellison. He became familiar to me when he joined the Boston Celtics in the 90s and sported a long haired Afro hairstyle. He was retained in Cs when Pitino entered the scene.

If HoFers were selected in a draft, that draft is automatically disqualified from being labeled the worst one ever. May I offer the 2000 draft instead

Saw alot of him when he played in Boston. He didn't have that drive you need in the NBA. To be great or even average.

I remember in 1991 (important to note, this book was published in 1991), they did a "Re-do of the 1989 NBA Draft." The #1 pick would have been Vlottde Divac. Of course, Tim Hardaway, Sean Elliott, Glen Rice, BJ Armstrong, Dino Raha, Clifford Robinson, Shawn Kemp, and even Mookie Blaylock had some nice years. I know that I'm the King of Hindsight 20/20, though.

I think injuries while he was @ The UofL contributed to him being a disappointment. I recall reading a blurb that stated "He went from Never Nervous to Out Of Service", OUCH!! He was decent when he was healthy but I guess the keyword here is "when".
