TOP 5 SERIES: 3 Reasons GARY PAYTON Had To Ring Chase! Stunted Growth

  • The 90s was one of the golden eras for basketball, that I’m sure holds a special place in the hearts of all fans of the game that witnessed what that era had to offer. It was hard nosed, competitive in everyday, balanced, so much so you could have a team from Utah competing for a championship, Detroit, San Antonio and the Seattle Supersonics. Not much like today, where those championship caliber, small market franchises are the league’s bottom of the barrel, and eaten up by superstars taking the easy way as I see it to glory, knowing the short term memory of fans won’t remember the context of how they won. One small market team in particular isn’t even around any longer. Of course the Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp led Supersonics, that featured at point guard one of the greatest 2 way players to ever play the game. A trash talking, edge seeking competitor, that if not for the following 3 reasons, wouldn’t have had to chase rings at the end of his career on large market teams he tried to bury every night. Today’s story will help you understand how great Payton was, the expectations for him, and why he couldn’t win a championship in his prime when he was the best defensive, mixed with offensive point guard ever. 9x all defensive first team, defensive player of the year, 9x Allstar, and of course we have to call him champion for the bench riding shot in the dark win with Miami in 2006. He’s one of the top 50 greatest players of the 90s and well respected historically, but was held from the ultimate goal in the 90s, winning a championship. I know. Stupid ass Rockets fans think Mad Max was even top 15 or 20 SG foes vs M.J.
      Dumars, Starks, GP , R all way better foes vs M.J. than Mad Max. Nd we only mention these guards is because they were on the defensive vs Mike. They were never meant to or never could outscore M.J. so they had to work non stop on D vs him. Nd thus why they even have a category to fall under as, "Jordan checkers." They were never "Stoppers."
      Guards like Reggie Miller, Allan Houston, Sidney Moncrief, Drexler, Richmond could actually make Jordan work on both ends.
      So by the time Mad Max is even worth mentioning, there are so many SGs that were on Mike's radar b4 little pathetic Mad Maxine.

      @@stuntedgrowth I could imagine it now if Seattle came back with a NBA squad it would definitely be a hot destination , not the best weather but just how "quirky" the city is and just the feel of the city it would most definitely get a couple stars in a off-season and how the Seattle metro has boomed in the last twenty years it's bound to get another team they just need to take the steps as a city and build a state of the art arena downtown and they'll attract some one more than likely it'll be the Memphis Grizzlies 👀

    JC this summed up Gary Payton's career perfectly. Payton was right tho about him guarding Jordan in that finals. George Karl is a stubborn, asshole, overrated coach. That decided to defend Jordan with Hershey Hawkins the first 3 games, who was pretty good but far from Gary Payton. They series would have went better. I remember saying that when it was happening in real time in 96.

  • @lamontwatson6975
    @lamontwatson6975 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only thing that I didn't like about this one was the fact that any blame is on Shawn Kemp ,no it was the organizations fault on why Shawn had issues with them and it was not about money for Shawn the organization didn't want to spend any money on good players !!!!!! Shawn was never a problem or a distraction from getting a ring actually SHAWN KEMP should be in the HOF without a question he was one of the only players who literally carried the NBA and made it what it is known for today and that's showmanship and excitement , if course there were a few guys that had that as well buy Shawn was straight out of high school and was the too three best players easy from 90 season to 1997 do the history that boy got robbed out the HOF and he did all of this in that era with all those Hall of famers he shined above all of them he was in every All-Star game and he shine defense and offense so underrated !!!
