- One of the subconscious negatives of competition is realizing that someone has to lose. Someone has to wear that loss until the next time they win. The thing about sports and age is, you may never win and as you age, those chances fade even more. Well, unless you golf.. Patrick Ewing was one of the best players to ever play the game of basketball. A generational big man, that won a championship in college and drafted as the #1 pick to change the Knick’s future and win in an era traditional big men were still having success. He’s a 2 time olympic gold medalist and named one of the 50 greatest players ever in 1996.. But every year, as more great players emerge and more of them accomplish the one thing Patrick couldn’t, his name slips down the list. Here are 3 reasons Patrick Ewing’s basketball career didn’t live up to some of the other great big men of the game. I think whenever speaking about a former Knick player, you always have to first look at the franchise in itself before accessing whether they played a hand in the players growth stunt. Ewing was too good for them to tank. They should have made better tanking efforts when Ewing was hurt. Look at the Spurs. They only ever tanked once in my lifetime and they got 5 rings in a tiny market. Those in charge should be fired ;)

He never played with another hofer during the period of the Knicks contending years , the only one he did play with who was Bernard King , tenure with Patrick Ewing wasn't when the Knicks were apex contenders ,and was only for 1 season .That's Ewing's stunted growth ,he simply didn't have the adequate help needed to fulfill winning a championship . Another potential Hofer who Patrick Ewing played alongside Mark Jackson wasn't considered worthy enough to be compensated financially amongst the top tier point guards when his contract ran out which certainly had a hand in the missing titles on Ewing's resume as well as Jackson's .

You take Ewing over Clyde Frazier? Respectfully disagree, Frazier was one of the best clutch players of all time, one of the greatest Finals Game 7s all time. He always gets forgotten because he won his titles in that weird early 70s era.

the Knicks have a big responsibility in Ewing's lack of rings. They never built an adequate team around him. However, I feel many people overestimate the importance of rings won in evaluating a player. Championships are won by teams, not by single players. Several different factors involved. Winning is important but it's not the only thing that should be considered

Growing up in NYC and a die- hard Knicks fan, I respected Patrick's heart and effort that he displayed on the court but having to keep trying to fight through Jordan's Bulls teams in an already tough Eastern Conference took its toll. One of the reasons Patrick didn't win a ring outside of Michael Jordan was Pat Riley ego for keeping John starks in game 7 instead of putting in Hubert Davis or Rolando Blackman .

I loved starks but everyone knew how streaky he was. Brilliant game 6 horrid game 7. I'm shocked more people don't blame starks like they blame Charles Smith. Starks game was all time worse in history of the finals & it was a game 7. They just need that game they win it all Ewing gets his ring. Smith got stuffed excruciatingly like 8 times in a row & is hard to watch. I know it was a huge game to not lose home court & to beat mj they worked so hard all year for hoke court. Which is so easily taken away in one playoff game. Anyway the Knicks everyone knew were done in 93 as they just could not beat the bulls in Chicago & usually got destroyed. Which they did. I remember after the Smith game nobody in my family wanted to watch anymore. Lol. I'm not kidding the Knicks were still alive but beating mj in Chicago was a sad formality of not gonna happen.

He’s in my Top 10 Centers all time, Ewing was a beast and never cheated the game. The injuries, bad press, lack of talented teammates, whatever, it didn’t matter. You knew that if you saw that box fade, knee pads, and #33 you were getting your money’s worth.
He’s always thrown in with the Malones, Stockton’s, Barkley’s etc., but to me Ewing had a legitimate excuse. He’s the HOFer that played with the least amount of talent all time. Who was his 2nd best teammate? Oakley? Starks? And Pat was taking them to the Finals. Idc what nobody says, you can’t think of 90s basketball without Ewing.

The only thing you did was name the only other superstar who has done it in modern times (post-ABA merger):Hakeem (for his first ring) and Bill Walton. Malone was playing next to another HOFer in Stockton, Chuck asked for help and got KJ (who was an all star), and I’m a bigger fan of Barkley but I’m being completely honest about legacy ranking. The 2 best players Patrick Ewing played with was John Starks and Oakley. While other legends played with Top 50 players in their prime, like The Dream (w/ Clyde) and Mailman (w/Stockton), Pat was with players who’d probably wouldn’t crack the Top 300 and he still made it up there to the Finals twice, which is more than Barkley, Iverson, and Reggie Miller, and equal to Malone and Stockton’s Finals appearances. I’d say Pat Ewing is the middle bridge that separates the Malones and Barkleys, from the Robinsons and the Hakeems.
I’ll even take it a step further on the only player on your list who I’m gonna take a shot at: David Robinson. David Robinson got his two rings, not in his prime, but only after he got Tim Duncan. If you take out the rings pre-Duncan, David Robinson’s resume won’t come close to Pat Ewing, it wouldn’t even be better than Reggie Miller, if we’re being straight up.

Ewing was expecting a bump on that miss layup Antonio or Dale stayed back. He put a little extra for the contact that never came then there goes the back iron. You’re not gonna stop MJ but I think Xavier McDaniel helped neutralize Pippen (took the Bulls to game 7 in 92). I also feel Riley should take some blame. If Starks is on fire in game 6 only Mason or Oakley set picks (no need for a P&R option since Olajuwon is good at covering ground on a switch). Game 7 I blame Riley and Starks because most people know you get out of a slump by attacking the basket and free throws. Because of injury Ewing’s prime was when he first got in the league up to about 90-91.

Great job as always. 1 thing us Knicks fans remember. 96-97. Ewing was still healthy enough to be a threat. Houston was improving. Oak was still a beast and LJ was a mismatch. Knicks up 3-1 on the Heat until David Stern f's things up by suspending half the Knicks squad allowing the Heat to go get steamrolled by the Bulls. Knicks were a THREAT that year!! Jordan said it himself.

This one is simple. HE PLAYED IN THE JORDAN ERA!!! Had his shot against Houston came up short. End of story. As a side note: he came into the league when the East was ruled by Boston and Detroit. Great career, NO STUNTED GROWTH. He had to deal with better players and better teams.

2. Late to the Bad Boy Piston Imitation Game / Late to the NBA changes in the 90s
3. Inconsistent PG Play.
4. Lack of outside shooting
Also: lack of an offensive game plan. It was almost always "Ewing or bust" they had no movement and took forever to get into their offensive sets. You would think the former coach of the showtime Lakers would be able to implement a somewhat decent offensive scheme.

I think Patrick Ewing is one of the most underrated players of all time honestly. It's weird how a top 50 all time guy can be a top 50 underrated at the same time too. A few of those 90's centers are really underrated imo. Alonzo Mounring and especially David Robinson are also underrated. I really loved all those great 90's centers. My fav era tbh.
Those of us in the NYC area knew how much Ewing meant...unfortunately in the 90s he was the 4th center behind Hakeem, Shaq, and David Robinson

David Robinson was probably better too but not by much, an argument can really be made there. Robinson always had a much better supporting cast than Patrick.

If he had a player as good as Pippen he’d have at least two rings. In 94, Hakeem was just better. But the Knicks still took them to 7. I’m glad I was young in 94 because Idk how you can get over a game 7 finals loss.

This video details Patrick Ewing's Hall of Fame career respectfully. Of course he fell short against the likes of the great Michael Jordan and the amazing Hakeem Olajuwon if you look at his career. But one thing was for certain, Patrick indeed displayed his tremendous heart night in and night out. And as a Knicks fan, I will always respect that. The 1999 1st round playoff series against the Miami Heat displayed that heart. Hobbling up and down the court. Patrick had no business being on that floor throughout that 5 game series. Knicks don't beat the Heat without him. He still outplayed his fellow Hoya Destroyers in Mourning and Mutombo during those 1999 playoffs on one leg.
He's still the best jump shooting center of all time. Only David Robinson is even close.

Growing up a fan of the terrible New Jersey Nets I always hated the Knicks. When I say hate, I mean hate with a passion too.
But even with a Knicks hater, Patrick Ewing has the total respect of any NBA fan watching the game in his era.
This guy was a legend and did everything right. It's a shame he doesn't have a few rings, he certainly deserved a couple of them. Poor guy was always surrounded by overhyped barely average players.

The 1997 New York Knicks ruined everything. That Brawl in the 1997 playoffs vs the Miami Heat. That was when the Knicks started to decline. That was Ewing's last healthy season too!

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. A stiff, who didn't have cable TV until I was 18, so my NBA viewing was unfortunately limited to national games, and Sonics road games.
Bernard king was the damn man. People forget about him but he was one of the best ever.
I have a SONICS 33 EWING jersey! I was SO excited when we traded for Pat Ewing. I knew that he wasn't the 25ppg guy anymore, but I thought that he could have been 15 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks for us.
Ewing WAS NOT A LOSER. He had good teammates. He had good to great coaches. They just lost to teams that was better/or had momentum on thier side. You mention EWING in NY or in any NBA circles it demands RESPECT. That man played his heart out!

Now that you have that image, give him a mid-range jumper, better hands, better awareness, better footwork, more toughness and a better off-hand...that's PAtrick Ewing. It Pat Ewing came into the league in the mid-2000s like Dwight, Pat would be looked at like the next Shaq.
Always got love for Ewing. Wish he had better luck. Imagine if he somehow was a Spur with TD, PArker, Bowen, Manu, etc...instead of David Robinson.

LeBron's best type of sidekick is low-key an athletic big who set great screens, catches every pass, rolls smartly and finishes on both sides with either hand, but can also hit pick and pop jumpers. Look in 2003, LeBron and Boozer, two young dudes, ran Pick and Roll like veterans. It was fun to watch. Then, LeBrons best sidekick in three straight playoffs was ANDERSON VAREJAO who he always hit on pick and rolls. I wish he could have played with a more dynamic big, earlier... like if Boozer stayed, if Amare went to CLE, if Bosh was more of a threat to dunk anytime on anyone, instead of mainly being a 18 foot threat in MIA.
I think LeBron's best fit out of all the historic teams to this date, in my opinion, would have been to take Steve Nash's place at PG of the Suns with Amare, Shawn, Joe Johnson, etc...if he has all those shooters and a roll man like Amare....nobody would have ever seen anything like that.

I don't know about the not enough around him stuff during his prime stuff, that really is a Jordan thing. The Knicks mid 90s were loaded and good enough to get to the Finals. Starks was no scrub and could catch fire at any moment. Derek Harper was solid, Greg Anthony. Their front court was crazy strong. Always loved Anthony Mason. Ewing will always be considered a winner even with no chip.
