Based on this video I can say she actually does self tan regularly. I self tan all the time and every single tip she gave is completely accurate and I do my routine the same way she does. Flawless tan guaranteed so people going for it the first time - take notes. This is the only video you need.
All these videos say exactly the same thing but then it never works for me. My tan will go patchy after 2 days and then I'm stuck looking patchy for 7 days trying to scrub it and nothing will take it off. I don't get how to get a routine going where you have to scrub it all the way off to start over because it just does not budge until it wants to. I really wish could figure it out. People treat me better when I am tan.
Thanks for the tips ! I’m a bondi sands ride or die, I cannot stand loving tan! I’m super pale and it comes up really red on me and isn’t that dark at all. Just something for pale people like me to keep in mind
This was wonderful. I am new to self tanning and watching a lot of these videos but yours carries the most weight with me, as a dermatologist who uses these products long term has the data to trust! Thank you. 🙂
Thank you for a great video! I have had good luck with half Sisley and half Claris milky lotion. I have very dry skin (and yes, I moisturize) and this mixture works for me. The Clarins will start tanning reasonably quickly and the Sisley gets better on the next day.
For a more affordable option, I love bondi sands!! They often have deals like buy one get one free and there are coupon codes you can find online! (I use Carli Bybels code) and it looks great! That and loving tan are my two faves but loving tan is more expensive for not as much product. Bondi sands even has one mousse that you don’t need to rinse off (called liquid gold), so it makes me even darker which I love. It’s for more experienced people though since it doesn’t have that color guard that you need to rinse off! ❤️
How do you approach using a prescription retinol + face tan? Is that allowed/does it ruin the retinol effects or tan effects? Thank you in advance if you see this! 🥰🥰💚
@@DrSamEllis I came to this video hoping you’d address this as well. So I can do isle of paradise face drops added to my face cream (cerave) and leave on 6-hours, then wash my face and use differin? I thought differin somewhat “stripped” off the self tan.

Yea I think this is a side effect of self tanner, some moles like those sun spots or wart like moles get the pigment in them and make them more concentrated... it's such a bummer. I really liked the idea of self tanner until I understood this! Do you know if it happens with tan drops in moisturizer too?
Hi it looks great and there are some good tips in the video. Self tans are a bit of a no not for me thing. I'm the palest of the pale Scottish skin (fitzpatrick one) and they don't really work on me tbh. i've had it done in a salon (in a spray booth) and the next morning when the guide colour washed off I was back to white again. I've tried a few gradual tanning products - very little colour payoff also even after days of applying. I've just embraced being pale tbh - i'm the person who comes back from holiday and people ask "did you go?" or whilst there after almost a week people will ask "did you just get here?". It's a long term joke amongst my friends to stand next to me after a holiday - so they feel extra bronzed. i'm fine with being pale - wearing spf, hats, long sleeves etc and sitting in shade. I think other people look great though with a bit of colour and self tan is obviously much much safer. Best wishes.
Even with sunscreen my skin tans… I cover up and use shade but I have activities that require my arms to be in the sun. Now I have tan arms and ankles lol so I’m turning to self tanning to fix the difference.
Dr Ellis, thank you for this informative video. I had a sample of Tan Luxe "The Water Hydrating Self Tan Water" that I really liked for a quick application that did not require prepping and waiting. I have not used it long-term however. I believe it comes in light medium and medium dark. I am quite fair and used the lighter shade and was pleased with the result. It just gave a nice, light glow. I am wondering if anyone else tried it.
this is a way late comment but what if you lotioned them gently with a small makeup brush or q tip before you self tan? like the dry spots, it wouldn't absorb the product as much. it might be tedious but possibly worth a shot
Try baking soda twice a week. Flouride does not whiten teeth but baking soda can, make a paste with water. Will not damage teeth but do not do more than 2-3:times per week.
Thanks for the amazing video! My skin is feeling itchy after applying self tan, also, my skin feels warm. What would you recommend in this case? I tried several companies and the reaction is the same.
As a derm, I am wondering how to keep my tan on my face/neck with my skincare routine? I tan regularly and don’t want to keep stopping it. I use vitamin C (thd) in a moisturizer, a serum for pigmentation, and tretinoin (SPF and once in a while exfoliate with a glycolic acid mask). The retinol.. even the vitamin C moisturizer which I love seems to hate my tan! So I was thinking tan drops? Maybe every other night retinol and on off nights mixing the isle of paradise tan drops with a nice basic moisturizer? 😂 if you can answer this then thank you!!!! ❤

@@zoharshnaider1083 If you`re allergic to DHA, you may also be allergic to Erythrulose (similar component, but more expensive). Carrot oil would be an option, however, you will not get a dark tan like you get with DHA. If it's for your legs only, you can try mineral foundation in a darker shade and mix it with a moisturizer. It will not last as long as self tan but will suffice for a night out. I recently watched a video from a woman who used just black tea for tanning her legs. Not sure how well this works.
When we were young we used to self tan by taking a small bottle of baby oil, mix 2 tea bags in a half glass of boiling water let steep and cool, mix the black tea with the baby oil and rub it into your skin . Dr Ellis, Besides the financial difference between the two different applications, do you think there is a difference between self tanning at home or professional spray tanning? Does one last longer? Is professional spray tanning equally as “safe“? Ty🤗
Both should be safe. Doing it professionally usually ensures the most even application and they can help you tailor your tan to the exact depth of color that you’re trying to achieve.
But a tint small shade of tan/yellowness does signal health and attractiveness to people. But being darker doesn't really increase the benefits of attractiveness.

Certainly in theory, but the extent is unknown and thought to be minimal (given the oxidation reaction occurs in the superficial dead skin cell layer) especially when compared to a UV-induced tan. For those concerned about avoiding every possible aging exposure, they can skip this, but I would consider it a much safer and less damaging alternative.
I've bought those tanning drops that you mix into your moisturizer and it works well, but it's not very strong. I'm still too scared to try the stronger foams/mousse but one day I need to😆
I'm not sure if this would help you but there's two hacks I know for this (that don't require you buying a tool). 1- put the mit on a hairbrush for extra reach to get your back. 2- can't fully recommend this but, if you take an old shirt/towel . You'll need to be able to hold a corner in both hands and then use it to rub your back in a back and forth way (I don't think that makes sense lol)
I recently ordered the Bondi Sands tanner mousse. I haven't used it yet because I accidentally threw the applicator mitt away. I'm waiting for another mitt in the mail. Please, if anyone reading this has used this product, let me know what you think.
Loved it at first. The very first time I ever used self tanner. After that, it faded splotchy. Bad splotchy. I looked like a leper after 3-4 days. I like b.tan. For my face, I tried St. Tropez mist, not impressed. I use Tanologist drops and mix it with moisturizer and love it. I just ordered the spray tan machine from Minetan and am excited about using it. It's on sale for $99 and new members get 20% off. And you get tanner with it enough for 4 tans. But I love b.tan for foam and their products are endless. They have violet, caramel and olive based ones. But Bondi Sands is a huge no for me. And getting it off was a nightmare. I bought the tan eraser, smothered my body in baby oil, even used lemon juice. It just didn't want to come off. I would have to exfoliate my body so hard that itactually hurt. You are going to have to experiment. Loving Tan is ridiculously priced and the bottle is small. I did try Tanologist, but only the water spray. People have had good luck with their mousse. I believe b.tan and minetan are owned by the same company. The DHA dries out your skin. That is why you have to keep applying moisturizer. My skin still feels tight and dry and itchy when I use self tanner no matter how much lotion.

I do shave my skin every two weeks and I cannot use any actives (except for growth factors and peptides) for the next three to four days after shaving but I wanted to know if anything can help the healing process of my skin. Thank you as always
Buy a dark colored flat sheet and for the night you self tan lay that flat sheet on your side of the bed. In the morning pull it off and toss into laundry. This is what I do, no changing sheet, no stained sheets!
I just rub it on (cheaper brands) and leave it on... enough to take off the white glow 😄 Glad to hear that it's safe. I'm even trying to keep the sun off my arms these days.
I still believe some sun is healthy for you. No matter how many times I hear a dermatologist say it’s not. If plants need it I would say we all need it.
Yeah! I'm stunned that this lady didn't mention the scientific evidence of the damage that DHA does!! We live in a weird world! Everyone wants to eat healthy, buy supplements, go vegan, buy non dairy foods etc etc etc....but when it comes to self tanning, nobody bothers to do any research into the nasties that are contained within! It wouldn't be so bad if it were used on a small part of your body, but people tanning their entire bodies!! 😬
I started tanning in beds and my skin looks amazing. I fell into the trap of believing sunlight was bad. I kept inside during the day for year's. It became a phobia until 1 day I told myself "We all die" at the age of 27 I started going out during the day and not wearing sunscreen and my skin looks so good. It's evened out and past acne marks have disappeared. The sun gave us life, we need it to survive, avoiding it and it's ray's is what companies what to tell everyone so they can continue to sell their sunscreens. Never again!

Maybe hours before if you have any oil or lotion it creates a bond that blocks the tan from absorbing full strength.
No, you can use oil to help remove the tan when it's patchy but it works against the tanner rather than with it
I do the day before
Thank you Beginner here 🙋♀️ much appreciated!
It makes age spots stand out WAY TOO MUCH
Tanologist--truly does not have color transfer :)
This is true.
Hi Dr Ellis :) Would you please make a video on post-procedure or skin barrier reparing care? I do shave my skin every two weeks and I cannot use any actives (except for growth factors and peptides) for the next three to four days after shaving but I wanted to know if anything can help the healing process of my skin.
Thank you as always
Ironically my back always comes out the best and most even despite all the contorting
Buy a dark colored flat sheet and for the night you self tan lay that flat sheet on your side of the bed. In the morning pull it off and toss into laundry. This is what I do, no changing sheet, no stained sheets!
Try phenomenal tan
And I thought I was applying self tanner right....not! Thank you Dr Sam :)
I just rub it on (cheaper brands) and leave it on... enough to take off the white glow 😄 Glad to hear that it's safe. I'm even trying to keep the sun off my arms these days.
Do you must store the self tanners in the fridge?
Here for the self tanning tips but stayed for your beautiful teeth😍😂
😁😁
It looks so messy can’t believe anyone gets this foam on smooth
Do you shave your legs??
You’re so gorgeous
😍😍
AAAAHHH… “you can use an exfoliate with micro beads “ no! Please respect the environment! And don’t use projects that use non-dissolvable exfoliants.
Nothing better than a cheap, thin washcloth & a little elbow grease.
Guys, how you prevent your nails and cuticles from turning yellow after self tanning? This always happen to me, no matter how good I clean my hands.
Order a tanning mitt. It helps
I wear medical gloves under my tanning mit. I got sick of yellow nails
Great tips but the fingers though…
I still believe some sun is healthy for you. No matter how many times I hear a dermatologist say it’s not. If plants need it I would say we all need it.
So you can do photosynthesis as well. Wow 🤣
Totally, We need Vitamin D. You can have both sun protection and Vitamin D, without skin damage or nutritional deficiency.
@@pernambuko27 idk what is more embarrassing, your response or your ignorance.
I totally agree with you
Agree 1 million percent
I feel that Skin Dr.s fear of the sun is absolutely ridiculous!
DHA isn’t really safe tho…
Aw ok bb enjoy skin cancer (honestly tho pls wear sunscreen I don’t want u to get sick)
I’m glad that you’re so happy, but why take the chance? 😊
Certain wavelengths will break down collagen over time, and you really can't replenish it once the damage is done
Coconut oil has a natural 15 or 20% amount of sunscreen protection
Trump gets carried away with tanning
I don’t like this at all, itchy!!!!
