Vintage Star Wars R2-D2 remote control Wabi-Sabi restoration - Toy Polloi

  • Sometimes a toy can't be fixed fully, but it cab be made to look good enough to display. And that was the case with this vintage Kenner Remote control R2-D2. He had really seen some serious action and was missing all the chrome, battery cover and the insides were a complete mess.
I knew I couldn't get him working again, but that I could get Artoo looking nice enough to display. So time to try out some new chrome paint for the dome, and scratch building the missing battery cover.

I watch a lot of other repair channels and spend most of my time thinking 'I don't have that tool' or 'I can't afford that tool'. With Toy Polloi I want everyone to feel they can have a go. Using everyday items, or simple techniques you can still get great results.

@@toypolloi That's a fair enough point but if you're using 35quid paint I'd make the investment. If you used an airbrush and explained that a brush could also be used to similar effect I don't think be put out by that.

one of the things that was so new and fresh about Star Wars in 1977 was that the sets, props, droids, etc. were not pristine but very wabi-sab (unlike most sci-fi up to that point)i; so this type of restoration is appropriate imo

Despite what you say about the whole airbrush thing, I’ve seen someone use the Molotow in an airbrush, and then a clear coat on top of it, which resulted in probably the best chrome I think I’ve ever seen, also durable because of the clear coat which it wasn’t affected by at all. Certainly worth it.

Airbrush setups are quite affordable nowadays - you can get all-in-one setups with a portable compressor for under 60 Australian Dollars (just under the price of one bottle of Culture Hustle Mirror paint!!) - though I get where you're coming from, seeing as I'm a hand painter too. I wonder if you could fit RC tank parts (motors & lights) into this; it would be a challenge to fit in, but modern controls would be a huge step up over what originally came in this toy (if it was working). Might not be worth it unless you happened to have an old broken RC tank lying around!
