There's so much trial and error to these kinds of projects, and I really appreciate all of you out there doing the legwork and sharing w/us. Definitely looking forward to the de-yellowing, as that's the challenge I've faced over the years re: finally getting an R2-D2 for my vintage collection. Those re-pro stickers look so glaringly out of place stuck onto a yellowed body.
It's great to hear you mentioning some of my other favourite channels. This droid is a bigger crossover event than Avengers Endgame.

If ever you want to mess with Chrome or durable metallics again look around an online store called MicroMark. They sell a lot of wonderful hobby tools. One of the things they sell are some do it yourself electroplating kits. You lay down a base layer of a conducting paint, masking where you don’t want metal. Then run current to the paint, and paint the surface using a conductive brush that completes the circuit. Buffing between layers. It works surprisingly well, but is messy and time consuming (do not do indoors! Well ventilated area). There are different metal finishes available. I’ve seen some gorgeous Phasma helmets done with it.
Also, quick tip if you are trying to detail paint on chrome, and getting that glare problem. Put on a pair of polarizing glasses. Sunglasses or range glasses. The Polaroid on the glasses will eliminate most of the light scattering so you can see what you are doing.
Your process sounds like the way to go.
rxz4140 This is a decent video showing how it works. It’s called brush plating. The one thing the gun doesn’t quite explain is he puts down copper first to give a better base to then plate over. And get better results.

Glad to see this video! Hate to say it but the chrome metalized people looks to have done a half assed job. I won’t have let the dome leave the shop looking like that. Good thing you’re creative!! Looks great so far!

I love those silver and gold metallic pens, I use them for my gundam model kits for fine details. Patience truly is the key here!
I opened my Molotow brush up and sprayed mine and it looks awesome.

I'm really glad that you're taking your time. I think your patients is paying off, based on the photos you've shown. I completely agree that the VAC-Metalized finish was far too textured and the Molotow pen was a great call.

That's good to know about the chrome pen. I'll probably never be able to get a Super Powers Cyborg but I did get the new funko 3 3/4 Teen Titans Cyborg and painted it with the chrome pen. It looks awesome.

Exhale as you apply the paint, I paint figures that are based on pennies and that helps with brush control

Still have my original R2 from 78. My mom put my initials on the bottom of R2's foot. Still there to this day. :)
Never wash it off, keep that memory alive.

Super job so far and seems like the dome would be the hardest part due to the chrome. The idea to add a layer on top seems to have worked. It looked a bit smoother to me and, as you stated, it should actually protect the other chrome finish underneath. I paint 28mm D&D minis and I am no Rembrandt but the more you paint, the faster and better you get. Frustrating at times but overall relaxing and enjoyable when you get a batch of something painted. Can't wait to see what's next for R2! Makes me think of when Threepio said, "Thank the maker. This oil bath is going to feel..." Well, you know! ;-)
Next you can work on 'holy grail' Death Star Droid and Threepio who have become badly tarnished. I'm sure that would be a nightmare, lol!
It has been a while, but I think it's starting to look awesome! O for one am looking forward to seeing the completed figure. My childhood original is in way worse condition. R2D2 has a special place in my heart as my childhood R2D2 was my first Star Wars figure ever.

Odd that you were told that blue colour was applied by electroplating, there are not any blue metals. Chrome has a blue hue to it but it has a basic silver colour overall. The closest I can think that actual colours get applied by something similar to electroplating, is anodising, but I don't imagine Kenner masked and anodised just those little spaces in the dome more likely that it is paint or print of some sort like the eyes on the vac metalised Death Star droid. Vac metallisation is actually aluminium, and as a metal, aluminium does get anodised with colours, but not really in cases like this, my money is mostly put on paint. Try some tested paint removing tricks on a worn artoo to see if you can paint strip the blue

Have you tried airbrushing alclad ii polished aluminum? You have to put a decent amount of gloss coat down, preferably a dark color so it gets that mirror look. You can then clear-coat it with Omni automotive clear coat. I have done this with several of my slot and retained the chromed look.

You can use 2K clear coat over Alclad Chrome which allows it to be handled regularly with no loss of shine/reflection .

I eagerly awaited this video, and I'd almost given up on you doing it. Thanks for delivering on this! I used citadel ardcoat (a brush-on clearcoat) recently on some GI JOE color repainting, and it gave it that original shiny look. It would probably give you an original shiny finish on the blue panel parts of the head. Just make sure that the paint is dry before using the ardcoat. It does work very well. If you have any reservations, just find an old R2, paint a single blue panel on the head, let it dry, then try the ardcoat on it to see if you like the results. Either way, looking forward to the next part of your restoration, Michael!

I saw the remote-control R2D2 on the table. I have one minus the controller, from when I was a kid. Trying to figure out a way to retro fit to working order.
I don't know if it got through before, but one time in Virginia, I took a silver ring to a lapidary and they plated it gold in a machine. If you found a place like that, maybe they could plate it silver. But it looks like you found a solution already.
I have a silver hawk quicksilver that I re chromed it looks good, but it took months to dry and still I need to work on touch ups.
Those chrome pens are great. I’ve used them on transformers and matchbox cars with great effect. Good luck :-)

I tried that Molotov with the Captn. Phasma figure - what I didn't know was that it had to cure for so long. So I gave up on that. Now it's back in the line to try again :)

I wish I still had my R2 and I the only one that had a marble stuck in the bottom hole? I don't know why we did that.
I wonder if using a red light like in a darkroom when you try to paint the blue would make it easier to see? ...and a blacklight for redish colors. I never tried it but from years of being in darkroom the lights do really effect some colors.

makes me wonder if you could have buffed out the imperfections in the vacmetalization with a mild compound and super soft dremel pads like the ones baremetalhw uses..... im guessing you thought of that though
